The atmosphere was as silent as death.
Lu Zhao looked at Ji Zhaoxi’s current appearance, her mouth hanging slightly open.
Ji Zhaoxi slowly put back on the clothes she had originally taken off. At this moment, no one spoke; for a while, it felt as if they were performing in a silent film.
After dressing, Ji Zhaoxi rubbed her brow. Her voice was faint, tinged with a hint of fatigue.
“How much longer are you going to stand at the door?” She paused there, and finally, as if she couldn’t bear to look, she turned a slightly disgusted gaze toward Lu Zhao.
“There’s nothing left for you to see now. You can close your mouth.”
After the scare just now, Ji Zhaoxi had sobered up quite a bit. Seeing Lu Zhao’s pathetic state, her heart felt a bit complicated.
“Wooo, wu shi wo…”
However, Lu Zhao’s eyes were wide and her mouth stayed open as she began to gesticulate excitedly. Finally, seeing Ji Zhaoxi’s brow furrow tighter and tighter, she stomped her foot in panic and quickly took out her phone to start typing.
“My jaw is dislocated!”
Seeing this sentence, Ji Zhaoxi’s face darkened. She gave Lu Zhao an indescribable look, quickly came out of the bathroom, carefully checked Lu Zhao’s condition, and went to make a phone call.
After hanging up, Ji Zhaoxi led Lu Zhao to change her shoes.
“In this condition, you need to go to the hospital. I’ve called someone to drive; let’s go down now.”
Since she had been drinking, she naturally couldn’t drive.
Lu Zhao felt like crying but had no tears. She didn’t know how a moment of shock had caused her jaw to dislocate. She was still young! Even if she had osteoporosis, it shouldn’t be this brittle, right?
After changing shoes and following Ji Zhaoxi to the underground parking lot, a tall, burly man was already standing by the car. Seeing them appear, he immediately opened the rear door.
Lu Zhao recognized him—he was Ji Zhaoxi’s bodyguard.
Damn it, this is too embarrassing tonight!
After getting in the car, Lu Zhao said unclearly through her open mouth, “Ni ni you mie you ke zhao!” (Do you have a mask?)
Lu Zhao was anxious; if her current appearance was photographed, she would truly be disgraced all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
Ji Zhaoxi: “…”
She looked at Lu Zhao with a complicated expression. Just as Lu Zhao thought she hadn’t understood and was about to type on her phone again, Ji Zhaoxi suddenly leaned forward, reached into the glove compartment, and pulled out two masks.
“Bear with it.” Ji Zhaoxi tore open the packaging and carefully helped Lu Zhao put the mask on.
Only after the mask was on did Lu Zhao finally feel a lot more at ease.
“Does it hurt?” Ji Zhaoxi suddenly asked her.
Lu Zhao blinked, shook her head, then nodded, and held up her thumb and index finger to gesture “a little bit.”
Ji Zhaoxi sighed and didn’t speak again for the rest of the trip.
When they arrived at the hospital, the bodyguard went to register them. Fortunately, there weren’t many patients late at night, and they were seen quickly.
Ji Zhaoxi led her inside. As soon as they entered, they saw a doctor around thirty years old with thick black hair sitting there. The first thing he said upon seeing them was, “Who is the patient?”
Ji Zhaoxi silently helped Lu Zhao remove her mask and pushed her toward the doctor.
“Her.”
Lu Zhao: “…” What to do? I feel so embarrassed.
Seeing Lu Zhao’s face, a look of confusion appeared on the doctor’s face. “Why do you look familiar? Have I seen you somewhere before?”
Lu Zhao: “…” Even more embarrassed!
Fortunately, Ji Zhaoxi spoke up to break the tension. “Doctor, please check her jaw first. It’s dislocated.”
Hearing Ji Zhaoxi’s words, the doctor stopped obsessing over whether she looked familiar. He glanced at Lu Zhao and said very flatly, “Simple. Just pop it back in.”
???!
Lu Zhao’s eyes instantly widened. In a panic, she pulled Ji Zhaoxi and hid behind her, making whimpering sounds.
Ji Zhaoxi heard clearly: “…”
She translated for the doctor with a complicated expression: “You… your hair is quite thick. Is there a doctor with less hair?”
After saying this, even Ji Zhaoxi couldn’t bear it. A faint blush appeared on her fair face, looking somewhat embarrassed.
Behind Ji Zhaoxi, Lu Zhao nodded repeatedly, gesturing at her jaw to indicate that for something like snapping a joint back in, it was better to have an older doctor!
The doctor glanced at them calmly. Then, he lowered his head and used his hand to flip his hair upward. His original bangs turned into a slicked-back style, revealing a shiny forehead caused by a receding hairline.
“Are you reassured now?” the doctor asked calmly.
Lu Zhao: “…”
Now, not only was Lu Zhao silent, but even Ji Zhaoxi was rendered speechless by the doctor’s action.
After two seconds of silence, she silently moved two steps to the side, exposing Lu Zhao behind her, and made a “please” gesture to the doctor.
Lu Zhao also quieted down. When the doctor walked over to her, she even felt a bit bad and helped him pull his hair back down to restore his original look with bangs.
Doctor: “…”
Seeing this movement, Ji Zhaoxi remained quiet, but her expression under her mask grew three shades colder.
A dislocated jaw is relatively easy to handle. After a brief examination, the doctor fixed the back of her head with one hand and held her jaw with the other. Before Lu Zhao could even react—crack—the sharp pain made her cry out.
After the pain came a sensation of relief. Lu Zhao moved her jaw. It was fixed!
Lu Zhao’s eyes instantly lit up, and she looked at Ji Zhaoxi happily. “My jaw is back in!”
Looking at her bright, joyful eyes, Ji Zhaoxi gave a faint “mm.” She then looked at the doctor and said, “Is there a vacant bed? If so, please arrange for her to be hospitalized. We’ll do a full checkup tomorrow, and see if there’s any issue with her mandible—why it dislocates so easily.”
Rarely did Ji Zhaoxi say so much to a stranger at once.
However, upon hearing this, Lu Zhao: “…”
“That works. At such a young age, you don’t want to develop habitual dislocation,” the doctor said bluntly. After speaking, he looked at Lu Zhao’s face again, and a look of realization finally dawned on him.
“I know why you look familiar. Aren’t you that ‘simp’ (licking dog) from the internet?” As he spoke, he looked at Ji Zhaoxi and said hesitantly, “Then you must be that President Ji or whatever.”
Lu Zhao: “…” Where are your manners?
Ji Zhaoxi’s expression remained unchanged.
The doctor gave them both a strange look. Their interaction didn’t seem like the “one-sided simp” dynamic described online.
Without thinking further, he sent them to handle the hospitalization procedures and continued to see the next patient.
After everything was arranged, Lu Zhao settled into the hospital room, but she had one major concern.
“President Ji, do you think… can this hospitalization fee be reimbursed?” Lu Zhao looked cautiously at the cold-faced Ji Zhaoxi.
Ji Zhaoxi: “…”
She could already see the visible “heartache” on Lu Zhao’s face, as if Lu Zhao might actually faint from grief if she said it wasn’t reimbursable.
“…It’s covered.”
Lu Zhao instantly beamed, all traces of heartache vanishing.
Ji Zhaoxi: “…”
She even began to suspect if Lu Zhao had been acting just now.
“President Ji, you should go back. I’ll be fine here by myself.” Lu Zhao lay on the bed. She didn’t have any major issues; tonight was essentially just like staying in a hotel.
“Mm, I’m heading back,” Ji Zhaoxi said.
“Okay, bye-bye!” Lu Zhao waved at her with a smile, her face showing no change.
Ji Zhaoxi watched her for a long time before finally turning to leave the room.
Once Ji Zhaoxi left, the smile on Lu Zhao’s face gradually faded. It made sense; it was already good enough that she had brought her to the hospital. How could she expect her to stay and keep her company?
While handling the paperwork, Ji Zhaoxi had someone deliver some changes of clothes. Lu Zhao went to the bathroom to shower, then lay quietly on the bed.
It was late at night, and the hospital was very quiet. Occasionally, the sounds of insects and birds could be heard from outside, which felt quite peaceful.
Gradually, drowsiness took over. In her daze, she felt as if the door to her room had been opened, followed by the faint, fresh scent of oranges.
It smelled a bit like the scent on Ji Zhaoxi.
Having worked non-stop all day, Lu Zhao was truly exhausted. She wanted to open her eyes to see, but she couldn’t manage it, and her consciousness eventually went completely dark.
“Doctor, doctor, how is my dad? When can he be discharged?” … “The patient’s diet must be carefully monitored now. We will observe the situation later.” …
Sleeping fitfully, Lu Zhao heard various voices from outside. She slowly opened her eyes, gave a comfortable stretch, and let out a satisfied sigh.
She turned her head and met a pair of calm eyes.
Lu Zhao: “…!”
Her eyes instantly widened as she looked incredulously at Ji Zhaoxi, who was sitting by the window holding a book.
She had changed into a different outfit: a simple casual shirt paired with black casual pants and white sneakers. She didn’t seem quite so unapproachable.
But even if she wasn’t unapproachable, she shouldn’t be here!
This made her look very un-simp-like! Shouldn’t she be the one chasing after her?
“You… why are you here? When did you arrive?” Lu Zhao had slept so well she felt like she had forgotten something.
Ji Zhaoxi stood up and closed her book. “While you were still sleeping,” she said faintly. “Since you’re awake, go wash up. Since you haven’t had breakfast yet, go finish the tests that require fasting first.”
Lu Zhao was speechless. Of course I was sleeping when you arrived.
However, looking at Ji Zhaoxi’s expression, she silently got up, washed up as quickly as possible, and followed Ji Zhaoxi out.
Ji Zhaoxi was a woman of few words; if you didn’t initiate a conversation, she basically wouldn’t speak to you. Walking beside her and looking at her calm demeanor, Lu Zhao still couldn’t figure out why she would come to accompany her for a checkup.
Glancing sideways inadvertently, her footsteps stopped dead. Seeing her stop, Ji Zhaoxi looked at her with confusion, then followed her gaze into a nearby hospital room.
“…”
Lu Zhao’s eyes widened. She rushed forward and knocked on the door. Looking at Xu Miaomiao lying on the bed with one leg in a cast suspended in the air, she fell silent.
“Huh?”
However, Xu Miaomiao was very excited to see her and waved frantically.
“Come in, come in quickly!”
Lu Zhao turned to look at Ji Zhaoxi.
“Go in. I’ll wander around downstairs. Call me when you’re done chatting.”
Lu Zhao nodded vigorously.
When Lu Zhao went in, she closed the door. Since Xu Miaomiao was the only one in the room, Lu Zhao was confused.
“Where’s your manager? How did you get hurt?”
“Don’t worry about the manager.” Xu Miaomiao waved her hand dismissively, reaching out to pull Lu Zhao closer as if for a heart-to-heart talk.
“Yesterday, didn’t you tell me to find out what her concerns were and then solve them?”
“I thought about it carefully later. I decided it must be because of my parents! She must be worried that my parents won’t accept it. So, I went home yesterday and confessed to them that I like her!”
Lu Zhao’s eyes widened instantly. She looked at Xu Miaomiao incredulously, then at her suspended leg, her voice strained.
“So… your leg was broken by them?”
