Listening to Ji Zhaoxi’s words, Lu Zhao fell silent.
What does following me or not have to do with the “Three Hundred Tang Poems”! It’s not like those poems are my ID number—knowing them shouldn’t be the magic key to making you feel safe enough to come with me!
Moreover, that tone of disdain made Lu Zhao start to reflect: Was not being able to recite the “Three Hundred Tang Poems” actually a deeply embarrassing thing?
“I really can’t recite the ‘Three Hundred Tang Poems’ right now,” Lu Zhao said with total sincerity.
Ji Zhaoxi fell silent, seemingly contemplating what she should do since the other person couldn’t recite them, and whether she could still follow her.
“Then… then do you have candy? I want a lollipop,” Ji Zhaoxi said.
Lu Zhao: “…?”
Her eyes widened slightly as she looked at Ji Zhaoxi’s calm face. How could she ask for something so completely out of character—candy—with such a straight face?
And she specifically requested a lollipop…
“…I can get one. Wait for me.”
Lu Zhao went out and asked a waiter if the hotel had any lollipops. Fortunately, the answer was yes; they kept some at the front desk to pacify noisy children brought in by guests.
After thanking them, Lu Zhao bought a lollipop. When she returned to the private room, Ji Zhaoxi was still in the same position, quietly watching her.
Lu Zhao held the candy out to her. “Here, a lollipop.”
Ji Zhaoxi looked down at the lollipop silently, not moving a muscle.
Lu Zhao: “…You don’t want it?”
“I want orange flavor,” Ji Zhaoxi’s voice was low and soft. If Lu Zhao hadn’t been paying close attention, she might not have heard her.
Lu Zhao glanced at her, then turned around and left again.
Seeing her leave without a word, Ji Zhaoxi froze. A flicker of confusion and uncertainty appeared in her eyes, followed by a faint, hidden hint of abandonment and grievance.
On the other side, Lu Zhao had gone out to exchange the candy for an orange-flavored one. When she re-entered the room, she saw Ji Zhaoxi’s bewildered expression.
Lu Zhao’s heart suddenly softened. She had never seen this side of Ji Zhaoxi before. She looked a bit like a kitten, staring with wide, watery, innocent eyes.
Lu Zhao cleared her throat and whispered to herself: Don’t pet her, don’t pet her. She’s not a real cat. Even if she were, she’s the “Sugar Mommy” cat, definitely off-limits.
“Here, orange flavor.” Lu Zhao held the lollipop in front of her.
Ji Zhaoxi looked up blankly at Lu Zhao and said nothing. It was impossible to tell what she was thinking.
A giant question mark popped up in Lu Zhao’s mind. Seeing that Ji Zhaoxi still wasn’t moving, Lu Zhao paused for a second. Could this person want me to unwrap it and feed it to her?
Lu Zhao: “…”
How much did she actually drink tonight? Why was she never this high-maintenance when she got drunk before?
Helpless, Lu Zhao resigned herself to her fate. She peeled off the wrapper, pressed the lollipop against Ji Zhaoxi’s lips, and said, “Come on, open up.”
Ji Zhaoxi’s lips moved, and Lu Zhao watched as she parted them to take the lollipop in. Then, she sat there obediently, sucking on the candy.
Lu Zhao’s heart skipped a beat again. What should I do? She looks even more like a kitten now!
Suppressing the urge to reach out and pet her, Lu Zhao extended a hand, palm up. “Now that you’ve eaten my lollipop, can you come with me?”
Ji Zhaoxi’s eyes shifted, looking at Lu Zhao and then at the outstretched hand. After a moment of thought, she finally placed her hand in Lu Zhao’s palm.
Ji Zhaoxi’s hand was slightly cool, while Lu Zhao’s body temperature was higher. The contrast was vivid the moment they touched.
Lu Zhao peeked at Ji Zhaoxi; there was no reaction.
However, in her current state, Ji Zhaoxi didn’t look like “President Ji” at all. With a lollipop in her mouth, her right cheek bulged out, making her look soft and white, like a glutinous xuemeiniang (mochi dessert).
Lu Zhao felt it must be because she hadn’t had sweets in a long time—seeing someone who looked like a dessert made her want to take a bite.
“Cough, let’s go. Let’s go home,” Lu Zhao coughed to cover her tracks, then led Ji Zhaoxi out by the hand.
The drunk Ji Zhaoxi was very obedient and didn’t make a fuss. Judging by the way she walked, no one would guess she was intoxicated—she was too steady!
However, just before leaving the building, Lu Zhao hesitated. She turned to look at Ji Zhaoxi, who was still calmly eating the lollipop. This look wasn’t exactly suitable for public eyes!
Both of them were currently trending on the hot search list. There were likely paparazzi waiting outside. If Ji Zhaoxi were photographed like this, the internet would explode again!
Lu Zhao thought for a moment, then flashed a friendly smile and said coaxingly, “President Ji, let’s spit the lollipop out first. I’ll give you a new one once we’re in the car, okay?”
But Ji Zhaoxi just gave her a cool glance and ignored her.
For some reason, even in this state, Lu Zhao seemed to see a hint of “scorn” in her eyes toward the suggestion.
Lu Zhao: “…”
She’s not that easy to fool…
“If you don’t agree, don’t blame me for what happens next!” Lu Zhao said with a hint of a threat.
The lollipop in Ji Zhaoxi’s right cheek shifted to the left.
Lu Zhao: “…”
Fine.
Lu Zhao nodded. She looked at the suit jacket Ji Zhaoxi was wearing, pulled it off, and draped it over her head, holding her shoulders to keep her from struggling.
“Follow me. Don’t pull the jacket down, or don’t blame me if you end up on the hot search again.” As she spoke, she pulled her own hat lower over her eyes.
Ji Zhaoxi, suddenly plunged into darkness: “…”
Lu Zhao half-guided and half-carried Ji Zhaoxi out. Other staff members didn’t know what was happening and were stunned by the sight.
“Go get the car for me.” Lu Zhao didn’t waste words; she handed Ji Zhaoxi’s car keys to a waiter and led her to wait for the elevator.
The waiter took the keys, dazed for a moment before snapping out of it and rushing to make the arrangements.
Fortunately, it was late, and the peak dinner rush had passed. There were only two people in the elevator; seeing the situation, they tacitly stayed quiet and retreated to the corner, far away from them.
Lu Zhao also felt awkward. As soon as the elevator stopped on the first floor and the doors opened, she led Ji Zhaoxi out quickly. At the entrance, the valet had already brought the car around. Lu Zhao didn’t ask for help; she carefully helped Ji Zhaoxi into the seat before finally removing the jacket from her head.
The moment the jacket came off, Lu Zhao couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile.
The usually cold and refined Ji Zhaoxi, due to the previous commotion—especially having a jacket draped over her head—now had messy hair, losing her usual polished look. Her eyes behind her glasses were closed.
Even though she was still eating the candy, Lu Zhao felt like she was sulking and didn’t want to talk to anyone.
Lu Zhao pressed her hands together in a mock prayer toward her, holding back a laugh. “My apologies, my apologies. You wouldn’t want a photo of you eating a lollipop to be laughed at all over the internet, would you?”
After saying that, she carefully helped tidy her hair. Their distance was so close that Lu Zhao could smell the faint scent of orange on her.
It was quite sweet.
After fixing Ji Zhaoxi’s hair and bucking her seatbelt, Lu Zhao closed the door, walked around the front of the car, and got into the driver’s seat.
Lu Zhao drove toward Ji Zhaoxi’s home. Having been her “suitor” for three years, she naturally knew where she lived.
Bauhinia Gardens was about a ten-minute drive from the Ji Corporation building, located right in the heart of the CBD. The housing prices were so high that Lu Zhao felt she could die of shock just looking at them.
Once inside the residential complex, Lu Zhao finally felt a bit relieved. The residents here were all top-tier professionals from the CBD, so the security was top-notch. She didn’t have to worry about paparazzi sneaking in.
After parking and turning off the engine, Lu Zhao turned back to look at Ji Zhaoxi. The lollipop stick was no longer in her mouth; looking down, she saw it clutched in her hand, looking a bit awkward as if she wanted to throw it away but didn’t know where.
Lu Zhao stifled a laugh, got out to open the back door, and helped Ji Zhaoxi out. Though she knew she was steady, she still supported her just in case.
While waiting for the elevator, Lu Zhao saw Ji Zhaoxi toss the stick into a nearby trash can, then look at the elevator floor numbers as if nothing had happened.
She was so calm that sometimes Lu Zhao wasn’t even sure if this person was actually drunk.
Finally back in the apartment, Lu Zhao turned on the light and let out a heavy sigh of relief. Although Ji Zhaoxi was quite well-behaved, the whole ordeal was still exhausting.
Lu Zhao settled Ji Zhaoxi onto the sofa, then flopped down herself, letting out a long stretch.
Looking at the apartment, Lu Zhao mused: When will I ever be able to afford a flat in the CBD? The view from here is truly something else.
Lu Zhao turned to look at Ji Zhaoxi. “You can wash up by yourself, right? Go clean up and then go to bed.”
Ji Zhaoxi stood up and walked toward the bathroom.
Lu Zhao: “…”
Right, just like that. She understands human speech and reacts correctly. Who would believe this is a drunk person?
Not long after Ji Zhaoxi went in, Lu Zhao suddenly realized something. she dashed toward the bathroom, her voice inadvertently rising.
“Wait! Don’t take off your clothes yet! You haven’t taken your change of clothes!”
With a soft thud, just as Lu Zhao’s knuckles touched the bathroom door, it swung open…
Lu Zhao stood there slack-jawed, her jaw hitting the floor at the scene inside.
Who could have known that Ji Zhaoxi hadn’t closed the door properly!
