Chapter 6: Teddy Bear’s Game World (5)
Number 049 turned his back, no longer looking at Xie Yun.
Facing the pitch-black and quiet corridor, he suddenly craved a smoke, wanting to use nicotine to numb his restless, unprompted, and actively stirring nerves.
By this time, Xie Yun had also recovered his wits. He looked at the man’s departing back, suppressing those surging emotions in the depths of his heart. Thinking calmly, even if the man in front of him wasn’t Yu Wenshui, he was absolutely an anomaly.
According to the rules, players had to evade the serial killers, otherwise they would be hunted until they died. This rule was also validated by the scene at the western elevator just now. Those corpses were probably the fate of players who failed to evade a serial killer.
Yet this serial killer in front of him had not only spared his life but had even saved him.
Even when he had lost control just now and touched him, the man hadn’t flared up in anger to kill him.
In other words, he was an existence that stood outside the rules.
A conjecture surfaced in Xie Yun’s heart. Summoning his courage, he spoke up again: “Are… you a player?”
Number 049 froze for a moment, and immediately after, a light sneer escaped him: “If I were a player, what do you plan to do?”
His tone was packed with detachment and mockery, enough to make anyone who heard it feel pricks on their back. Yet Xie Yun, who had always been sensitive to such things, acted as if he hadn’t picked up on it at all, saying in a lighthearted tone: “If you are a player, would you consider teaming up with me?”
When he was originally asked “Are you a player,” Number 049 had wanted to ask Xie Yun: Are you out of your mind?
He had clearly just witnessed the conversation between himself and another serial killer, yet he still came to ask this kind of question. His IQ was probably compromised.
If that wasn’t enough, this player before his eyes actually invited him to team up. Having been an NPC for a long time, this was the very first time Number 049 had encountered this kind of situation, and it truly opened his eyes.
He turned around, his eyes sweeping up and down across Xie Yun’s body. The player’s personal profile quickly displayed itself before his eyes. Number 049’s gaze paused for a moment on the statistic “Games Cleared: 0.”
In other words, this person was a newcomer entering the game for the first time?
Was this person crazy or deluded? Entering the game for the first time, yet having the utter lack of survival instinct to invite a serial killer NPC to team up? Was he so severely mentally disabled that he couldn’t comprehend the rules? Had he still not figured it out after seeing that scene just now? In this world, one careless mistake would truly result in death!
Number 049 considered himself cold enough to be a qualified survival game NPC, and the evaluations from those around him were exceptionally high.
Even though he merely slacked off in every game and had never killed a single person, rumors about the tens of millions of lost souls under his blade still emerged in an endless stream, and believers were numerous.
He already possessed this kind of image, yet this person could have the giant heart to propose teaming up with him. If he were to let him go out like this, what difference would it make from sending him out to die?
Or was it simply because he strongly resembled that person named Yu Wenshui, allowing him to be entrusted with such profound trust?
The more Number 049 thought, the more irritable he became. This irritability came out of nowhere, and inexplicably, an anonymous fire set him ablaze.
He had absolutely no self-awareness that he had just disregarded his identity, broken the rules, and saved the other party. He only kept thinking that Xie Yun’s sense of wariness was simply too poor. How could he go on like this?
No, absolutely not.
Consequently, the mockery and refusal that had slid to the tip of his tongue were swallowed back down. Number 049 seemed to forget that his mission was to kill the young man in front of him. Carrying his cleaver, his expression was aloof and his tone was equally cold: “Don’t drag me down.”
The meaning was that he agreed to travel together.
Xie Yun’s eyes lit up, and he hastily nodded his head, saying: “Okay!”
The other players who were screaming and running for their lives inside this teaching building could never have dreamed in their wildest dreams that one of them had actually found a serial killer to escort and protect him.
After the two of them performed a simple self-introduction, they left the storage room together.
Just now inside the storage locker, Xie Yun had not been idling either. Instead, he had run through the map of the entire teaching building once more in his mind.
After coming out, he proposed going up to the office area on the fifth floor to take a look. As an NPC, Number 049 naturally had no objections, only proposing to take the elevator up with Xie Yun.
Having a teammate gave Xie Yun confidence. He did not question the reason behind it closely, nodding his head without a shred of hesitation.
This completely unhesitating manner caused Number 049 a wave of displeasure again. What if he had a wicked heart and brought him along to sell him out? How could he have not a single bit of wariness?
However, he endured it again and again, still saying nothing.
Because of the corpse piece performance from the western elevator serial killer, Xie Yun was more or less repulsed by that elevator. Number 049, on the other hand, loathed that elevator for being too dirty, so the two of them took the eastern elevator together.
Inside the brightly lit elevator car, Xie Yun secretly used the peripheral vision of his eyes to glance at the man beside him.
The greater half of the man’s facial features were hidden beneath the hood, only revealing a sharply lined jaw and thin lips. However, Xie Yun was slightly shorter than him. From this angle, he could catch a faint glimpse of the man’s straight nose bridge.
Without a doubt, he was an incredibly handsome guy.
Just by looking at the outline, Number 049 already looked exceptionally similar to Yu Wenshui. It was only a pity that he couldn’t see the full appearance, otherwise, he could thoroughly confirm the conjecture in his heart.
In reality, Xie Yun knew very well in his heart that Number 049 could absolutely not be a player. But back in the storage room, he had still asked that foolish question, and had even extended the request to team up.
As long as it was related to Yu Wenshui, even if there was only a tiny bit of possibility, he was unwilling to let go.
And…
Recalling how Number 049’s lips had pursed just now due to his inner conflict, and his final helpless sigh of compromise, Xie Yun bit his lower lip. Unable to hold back, the corners of his lips curved slightly.
Even without seeing the full face, he already possessed an eighty to ninety percent certainty that the person before his eyes was Yu Wenshui.
The “ding-dong” chime rang out as they arrived at their target floor, and the elevator doors slowly opened.
Outside the doors lay the unknown. Xie Yun’s heart tightened.
Right at this moment, Number 049 made an imperceptible step forward, happening to block right in front of him, adopting a subtle protective posture.
“Let’s go.”
Xie Yun was dazed for a moment, and subsequently, a massive smile blossomed on his face: “Mhm!”
