- Chapter 1 - Welcome to the "Human-Making Game": Let the Carnival Begin!
“Please ask the proctors to distribute the test papers and answer sheets. Candidates must not…”
The exam reminder was replaced by a shrill, chaotic noise. Before a group of students taking the exam could even react, they instantly plunged into a deep sleep.
Lin Chubai slowly opened his eyes, almost blinded by the harsh sunlight. Subconsciously, he raised a hand to touch the amulet hanging around his neck, squinting as he scanned his surroundings.
They had now arrived at a playground. All around them were people they had previously seen in the examination hall, and everyone now wore a look of utter bewilderment.
Before they could collect their wits, a sudden mechanical voice rang out as if coming from everywhere at once: “Welcome to the Human-Making Game! Let’s enjoy the carnival to the fullest!”
Hearing these words, the crowd at the scene fell as silent as if someone had hit the mute button, a quiet that was utterly terrifying.
Ignoring their reaction, the mechanical voice casually began to recite a bedtime story: “Once upon a time, there was a Mother Goat. One day, she went out to find food and instructed her seven little goats to watch the house. But one little goat was disobedient and sneaked out quietly. As a result, it ran into the Big Bad Wolf. It ran and ran, and ran and ran…”
Gradually, the mechanical voice was drowned out by heavy footsteps, and the ground seemed to tremble faintly.
The sluggish atmosphere was instantly shattered. Those examinees who had been frozen in place by fear were successively trampled into molecular dust by giant sheep and giant wolves that had inexplicably appeared. Splatters of blood rained down onto the faces of people running wildly in all directions.
Lin Chubai followed the crowd and sprinted toward the gymnasium at the edge of the playground, but suddenly, a force from beside him grabbed him tightly and hauled him back.
“Damn it! Don’t fucking block my way!” cursed the chubby kid running behind him viciously.
Lin Chubai wanted to turn around and shove the guy away, but before he could, the giant sheep, which had still been some distance away, suddenly flashed right behind them and stomped a foot down toward their spot.
The shadow of the sheep’s hoof enveloped him. He lunged forward with all his might, narrowly escaping the fate of being turned into molecular dust.
As a result, the giant wolf behind them didn’t want to fall behind and launched a finishing move: propping both hands on the ground, it used force and rolled sideways!
Unfortunately, the Big Bad Wolf’s foot happened to be a bit too big, and half of Lin Chubai’s body was still trapped underneath it.
Crap! I am going to die!
Suddenly, a surge of strength pulled Lin Chubai out from under that massive foot. Raising his head, he saw it was a boy wearing a No. 6 Middle School uniform. But before he could take a closer look, the little sheep turned its head and rushed toward them again, as if it had a GPS tracker installed on Lin Chubai.
In their desperation, the two of them lunged sideways, crashing hard enough to knock over the ice cream freezer outside the playground kiosk. They thought this would help them dodge the sudden attack, but for some reason, the little sheep abruptly changed direction and charged straight at them once more.
They were still sprawled on the ground, and there was simply no time to stand up!
Yet, strangely enough, the heavily stomped sheep hoof did not cause them any harm. Instead, a few inexplicably appearing points of light enveloped them.
Looking closely, for some reason, the giant sheep’s hoof instantly turned into an illusory phantom the moment it touched the building, unable to make physical contact with them.
What was going on here?
“It seems unable to pass through buildings.” Lin Chubai slowly climbed up from the ground and reached out a hand to the boy from No. 6 Middle School. “Thanks.”
Suddenly, a ray of light formed by reflection flashed into Lin Chubai’s eyes. His pupils constricted when he saw an amulet lying in a pool of blood, and he instinctively reached up to touch his neck again.
It was empty. His amulet was gone!
Lin Chubai suddenly exerted force with both hands, springing back up from the ground with bloodshot eyes. He broke into a run toward the amulet, moving so fast that even the No. 6 Middle School boy couldn’t catch him, leaving him to watch helplessly as Lin Chubai charged back into danger.
As if sensing that he had come out, the little sheep turned its head and flashed a wicked smile at him. Seeing this scene gave Lin Chubai goosebumps all over, but he had no time to dwell on it; that was the only thing his father had left behind.
“No… I cannot lose this…” Lin Chubai muttered to himself in his heart, swooping down to scoop the item from the ground. But the giant sheep was now only a step away, and its next foot was coming down heavily to stomp on him.
The No. 6 Middle School boy’s pupils shrank sharply, and he prepared to rush out and pull Lin Chubai back once more. To his astonishment, Lin Chubai grabbed the giant sheep’s leg fur like a madman and leaped up to cling onto it.
Angered by this human’s audacious behavior, the little sheep let out a roar and began thrashing wildly. Lin Chubai clung desperately to the wool in his grip, the veins on his forehead bulging.
Boom! Lin Chubai was flung through the air, crashing straight into a tree by the roadside. It felt as though his internal organs were about to be shaken to pieces, and a mouthful of blood mixed with phlegm spewed from his mouth.
The little sheep in front of him had fire blazing in its eyes and lunged over to stomp on him without a second word.
Lin Chubai no longer had the strength to dodge to the side. He slowly closed his eyes, a bleak smile twisting the corner of his mouth. Yet, unnoticed by anyone, the amulet in his hand seemed to flash brightly.
For some reason, the sheep’s hoof that should have landed on him veered off course. This gave the No. 6 Middle School boy a chance; he kicked the Grim Reaper hovering over Lin Chubai’s head straight away.
Lin Chubai felt his body scooped up by firm arms, the wind from their rapid sprint grazing his cheeks. A voice rang out in his ear: “Wake up!”
Opening his eyes a fraction, he caught sight of the sharp, well-defined jawline of the No. 6 Middle School boy right in front of him.
In the blink of an eye, they were back inside the kiosk. The giant sheep that had been chasing them closely was a step too slow, stamping its feet angrily at the kiosk before turning to run toward a crowded area to begin a new round of slaughter.
The No. 6 Middle School boy gently set Lin Chubai down. Only then did Lin Chubai snap back to reality, realizing he was not dead yet.
However, a grave problem was right in front of them: the kiosk was already packed with people, and the two of them could barely keep a foothold right at the entrance. Taking one more step backward would mean getting trampled to death by the giant wolves or sheep.
“…Ran and ran, the Mother Goat who just came home found that one of the little goats was missing, and following the little goat’s scent…”
Before the mechanical voice could finish speaking, another behemoth materialized out of thin air in the area, looking to be over twenty meters tall. If he guessed correctly, this must be Mother Goat.
“Damn it! Make some room for me, you bastards!” A familiar voice came from behind Lin Chubai. Looking back, he saw that very same chubby kid who had tried to push him earlier running over, reaching out to yank Lin Chubai out of the way.
Before his hand could even touch him, the chubby kid was sent flying by a fierce side kick, crashing onto the playground running track where he was instantly trampled into a bloody pulp.
Lin Chubai cast a cold glance at the unrecognizable remains of the chubby kid, then shifted his gaze to the No. 6 Middle School boy, who was still desperately shielding him from being squeezed out of the kiosk. He stared at him intently, as if trying to carve that face into his heart.
He would never forget this debt of gratitude, Lin Chubai thought to himself.
“The Big Bad Wolf fled in a panic, beaten black and blue by Mother Goat. To punish the disobedient little goat, Mother Goat has decided to turn it into tonight’s dinner.” As the air returned to silence, the three behemoths quietly vanished, leaving behind only patches of molecular humans.
Just as Lin Chubai wanted to say something to the No. 6 Middle School boy, a game-like interface popped up in his mind:
{Ding-dong, the warm-up exercise is complete. Please head to the Novice Village to claim your beginner equipment.}
“Novice Village…” a male examinee’s voice sounded in a low whisper, shattering the silence of the kiosk.
Suddenly, that male examinee clutched his throat as if being choked by an iron chain, wheezing out a choked, rattling sound. In less than ten seconds, his entire body swelled up just like a balloon by the side of the road!
Pop! The skin ultimately failed to withstand the high pressure inside and ruptured. Bloody internal organs splattered in all directions, adding yet another layer of gore to the already crimson-stained examinee.
This horrifying spectacle drove those with weak constitutions to let out a shrill shriek, but the moment they opened their mouths, they too began transforming into inflatable humans and bursting apart.
In less than a minute, the kiosk, which had been packed so tightly that turning around was impossible, was left with only a scattering of a few individuals.
Just as one wave subsided, another rose. Lin Chubai was completely stunned by the scene before him. Looking at a length of intestine still draped around his neck, his stomach was already churning violently. However, Lin Chubai acutely noticed that the people who had just exploded seemed to have done so because they spoke or made sounds with their mouths…
Realizing this, Lin Chubai immediately covered his mouth, desperately fighting down the upheaval in his stomach, and bolted outside, fleeing the sea of corpses and blood inside the kiosk.
