I Won Over My Best Friend’s Idol - Chapter 1
“Excuse me, ma’am, could you please pick up your son? He is sitting in my seat, thank you.” Kong Yinmeng believed her tone was already very peaceful. She had encountered children taking up seats before; usually, anyone with a bit of decency wouldn’t deliberately occupy a seat and refuse to give it up.
Unfortunately, this time, she indeed ran into someone shameless. The other person not only didn’t take the child away but even started an argument with her.
Because the sound of their quarreling was too loud and affected other passengers, the flight attendant had to come over to mediate, finally choosing to change Kong Yinmeng’s seat.
“I am so sorry. When encountering such unreasonable people, you can only endure it for a bit,” the attendant tried her best to soothe her, hoping she would accept a reasonable seat exchange.
Kong Yinmeng let out a long sigh of relief. “It’s fine for me to change seats, but you must make her pay for the extra seat. It is inherently wrong for her to occupy two seats for the price of one ticket. If she doesn’t make up the payment, it’s unfair to the other passengers.”
She didn’t even need to say it; since the woman chose to make a scene, she should be prepared to pay for the extra ticket, or else she would be forced off the train.
The attendant led her to a man who was wrapped tightly in a hat, sunglasses, and a mask. He was sitting in the seat near the aisle, and the inner seat next to him happened to be empty.
“Excuse me, sir, would you mind letting this lady sit inside?” The attendant felt a bit nervous; she had actually recognized who the person in the seat was, but since she wasn’t a fan and had professional ethics, she did not point out his identity.
“I bought the tickets for both seats.” Zheng Yi did not look up. At the moment he took out his phone, a notification sound for a low battery shutdown rang out.
Kong Yinmeng subconsciously touched her bag and then looked at the nearby seats; it seemed the person in front of her was the least troublesome.
“Hey, handsome, I have a power bank I can lend you. It’s inevitable to run into trouble when traveling; please do me a favor!” She traveled frequently and had seen all kinds of people. Even though his face was covered, she could still feel his unease regarding his dead phone.
Zheng Yi finally raised his head and found that her expression was normal; she likely hadn’t recognized who he was. “Mm, go in,” he said, standing up to make way. The attendant followed with a sigh of relief and turned to leave.
After Kong Yinmeng sat down, she took three power banks out of the bag she had been clutching. “Handsome, pick one. Which color do you like?”
She didn’t miss the moment of stiffness he had. She laughed in her heart; she did it on purpose. As a travel blogger who went out frequently, how could she lack power banks?
Every time she went out, she brought at least five power banks, all different in color and style. For someone with “choice paralysis,” it would be a difficult task, but it seemed he wasn’t one.
“This one, thanks.” Zheng Yi chose a blue rectangular power bank. After getting it, he immediately plugged it into his “on-strike” phone. After a few seconds, his phone was able to turn on.
Kong Yinmeng also took out her own phone and began editing a short post. At the start of her graduation, she had caught the trend of being a “hotel test sleeper” and made a significant profit from it.
Later, after her Weibo followers increased, she transitioned into a travel blogger. Compared to her classmates who worked for others, she was considered a lucky one.
“Hello, Brother Chen, I’m already on the bullet train. I know, I’ll be careful. You guys go ahead and rehearse.” Zheng Yi’s body relaxed after finishing the call.
As he leaned back on the chair to rest, he glanced sideways and accidentally saw Kong Yinmeng finishing a Weibo post and clicking into her profile to check it.
Seeing that her follower count was over ten million, she had more than an average celebrity, though it was much less compared to his. Just as he thought this, her phone rang.
“That idiot is calling again…”
Kong Yinmeng turned back and gave him an apologetic smile before picking up the phone. Even though she didn’t use speakerphone, Zheng Yi clearly heard the voice from the other side.
“Ahhhhhh! My Brother Yi got lost at the airport and missed his flight! I failed to pick him up! This was my first chance to see him in person!”
The other side was wailing like a ghost. Kong Yinmeng’s face was full of helplessness as she turned down the volume. “Lu Fangcao, can you have some dignity? You’re not lacking men around you, how can you lose your mind over a 2D-like paper person?”
“Stop with the ‘Brother Yi’ all day. Look at how old you are, have some shame. I’m getting home at 2:00 AM; you drive to pick me up. Set an alarm two o’clock! If you’re late, wait to get beaten up!”
She gave a few more instructions before hanging up, sighing slightly. She brushed through Weibo and sure enough, saw a trending topic: #Zheng Yi Got Lost at Airport and Missed Flight#.
“Heh, so stupid. Can’t even find the way. Fangcao really is blind to be a fan of someone with no sense of direction.”
The person involved sitting right next to her: “…”
“Lu Fangcao, you just wait. Not picking up my phone again, are you? You’re good, you’re finished, this time you are really finished!”
She should have expected Lu Fangcao to stand her up. Having failed to meet her beloved idol, she was probably off somewhere drowning her sorrows in alcohol or picking up a man… the more she thought about it, the angrier she got.
It was easy enough for her to call a taxi, but there had been a few cases in the news recently that gave her a bit of a psychological shadow. At this moment, she was hesitating whether to call one.
“Hey, handsome… that, can you give me a lift?” Just as she was about to hail a taxi, she saw Zheng Yi walking toward a car and hurriedly chased after him.
Based on her observations along the way, he didn’t seem like a bad person; going with him should be no problem.
Zheng Yi was already in the car. The driver didn’t really want to let Kong Yinmeng in and was about to refuse when he heard Zheng Yi say, “Come in.”
He was in the back row. Zheng Yi’s suitcase was already in the trunk, so Kong Yinmeng had to put her suitcase in the front passenger seat while she sat in the back.
“Thank you so much today. I’ve troubled you twice. Are you in Hong City for business? If you need anything, you can contact me. I’m a local; I won’t let you get a bad deal.”
As she spoke, she took a business card out of her bag and handed it over. Zheng Yi hesitated for a moment before taking it.
“Mm, I got it.”
He didn’t speak much. Kong Yinmeng raised an eyebrow slightly; she guessed this type was the kind of man Lu Fangcao liked. When he contacted her, she would call Lu Fangcao out and see how she performed then.
Her goal was achieved, so Kong Yinmeng stopped talking, and silence returned to the car.
The driver dropped her off at home first before heading back to the hotel. After she got out, the driver couldn’t help but say, “Did she really not recognize you? That’s not right; most women should know who you are.”
Zheng Yi looked down at the business card in his hand and laughed softly. “Perhaps she is one of the small portion of women who don’t.” The business card was simple, with only a name and a phone number.
He took out his phone, switched to his secondary account, and found her Weibo account to follow Moe Who Loves Traveling.
Regarding gaining an extra follower, both Kong Yinmeng and Zheng Yi were used to it, so when she finished washing up and lay in bed scrolling through Weibo, she wasn’t curious at all to see her followers had increased slightly.
The system pushed a notification about a friend’s update to her. She opened it, and Lu Fangcao’s activities for the day were laid bare.
From starting makeup at 8:00 AM to going out at 10:00, shopping for new clothes at 11:00, having lunch with a man, continuing shopping in the afternoon, to the failed airport pickup at 7:00 PM.
The latest update was from 10:00 PM, featuring a photo of a dimly lit bar and a man’s hand holding a wine glass entering the frame.
“Sure enough, she was lured away by some wild man. Heartless woman.” She had been away for nearly half a month, yet this woman didn’t miss her at all and didn’t come to pick her up immediately!
She patted her face and exhaled a breath of turbid air. “Can’t get angry, can’t get angry. Getting angry before bed is bad for the health. This debt can wait until tomorrow to be settled.”
After tidying up her mood, she quickly entered dreamland, hoping for a beautiful dream tonight.
Meanwhile, because Zheng Yi arrived late and missed the rehearsal, he had to work overnight to prepare, hoping to present a good state and give the fans a surprise.
“Xiao Huang, you go back and sleep first. I can practice by myself.” Zheng Yi danced through the routine again, but felt it was still somewhat unsatisfactory. When he turned to wipe his sweat, he noticed his assistant leaning against the wall dozing off and spoke to remind him.
Xiao Huang shook his head. “It’s fine, Brother. I’ll wait for you here. But don’t be too tired; there’s still a whole day tomorrow. It’s 4:00 AM now, we should go back and rest!”
The fact that Zheng Yi missed the flight was partly his fault. Who told him to board the plane early? He didn’t expect that in just a few steps of distance, Zheng Yi would manage to get himself lost.
“4:00 AM…” Zheng Yi thought for a moment, then agreed to the assistant’s suggestion, finishing the last run-through before heading back to the hotel to sleep.
Their performance this time was the last reunion concert before disbanding; after this, they would announce the breakup and each head toward different futures.
From the group’s formation seven years ago until now, Zheng Yi had done his best as the leader. There were four people in the group including him, and all had gained significant fame; they had rarely performed together in the last three years.
Everyone had their own busy schedules, and there was simply no chance to come back together. Even if they met, it was in public places where they couldn’t say more than a few words before parting again.
After washing up and lying in bed, Zheng Yi looked back at the past seven years with a feeling of “worlds apart.” The reason he was reluctant to sleep was also largely related to the impending disbandment.
He took out his phone, logged into Weibo, and scrolled down post by post. In seven years, he had grown from a 16-year-old stunned kid into a leader who could stand on his own.
The outside world’s evaluation of him was extremely high promising youth, a model of inspiration, a talent with great potential but all these titles were far less exciting than the night the group was formed.
“In the end, there’s no going back…” He stopped his hand from scrolling. Even if he kept looking, it was useless; they were destined to part.
He put his phone back on the nightstand and accidentally brushed against Kong Yinmeng’s business card. He picked it up gently, looked at it once, and put it back.
