- Chapter 7 - The Younger Brother Unexpectedly Ran Away From Home
Mimi answered the call and walked over to the window to talk. I vaguely heard her mention words like “home” and “programming.”
I walked up to Mimi and asked softly, “What’s wrong? Did something happen at home?”
Mimi silently hung up the phone in her hand, turned around, and pulled me into a tight embrace, her face etched with a helpless expression. “Sigh, it’s my younger brother—he actually ran away from home! Now he’s calling and asking me to go pick him up.”
“Then you should hurry on over,” I gently stroked her soft hair and said with concern.
“But… I really don’t want to part from you…” Mimi’s watery eyes flickered with a hint of reluctance as she grumbled in a slightly lowered voice. “This brat, I just sent him the password to the smart door lock at home and told him to take a cab there himself.”
I comforted her, “Silly, we’ll have plenty of time together in the future. Go pick up your brother first.”
Mimi shook her head vigorously, a tone of disdain coloring her voice. “Let him be. He’s a twenty-something grown-up, what kind of trouble could he possibly get into? Every single time, he ruins my chances of spending quality time with Big Sis.”
Hearing this, I couldn’t help frowning, saying worriedly, “You can’t do that. What if he runs into danger? Besides, he said he ran away from home, and we don’t know what actually happened. It’s better if you safely pick him up and bring him home.”
Mimi seemed somewhat undecided. After a brief silence, she nodded reluctantly. “Mhm… alright then, I’ll head back as soon as possible.”
With that, she stood up, walked briskly into the kitchen, and told Mom, who was busy inside, “Auntie, you don’t need to make lunch for me. I’ll come back and eat later.”
Hardly had the words left her mouth when she walked to the doorway, slipped on her shoes in a flash, and rushed out the door in a hurry.
Watching her departing figure, a wave of disappointment washed over me. Yet, thinking that she would be returning shortly, I felt a spark of comfort once more.
I decided to use this time while she was away to clear my head and try to recover more of my memories. Seated at the desk, I turned on the computer and prepared to look up some information I had previously stored on the hard drive.
I found a few old files on the computer, among which an encrypted document named “Fish” caught my attention.
I wrung my brain trying every possible password combination ranging from birthdays and anniversaries to commonly used numbers and more but the results proved disappointing every single time, leaving me with no choice but to give up.
“Momo, time to eat.” Mom gently pushed open the bedroom door and called out to me softly.
I headed toward the dining room. The moment I reached the table, a lavish spread of dishes met my eyes, exuding an enticing aroma that made my mouth water.
Mom smiled as she placed a bowl of steaming hot soup in front of me, saying tenderly, “Taste this, Mom made this chicken soup especially for you.”
I nodded, picked up my chopsticks, and dug in eagerly. We ate while chatting about everyday trifles, creating a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
Suddenly, I recalled what I had heard earlier about Mimi’s younger brother running away from home, and couldn’t help asking, “Mom, why did Mimi’s younger brother run away from home?”
Upon hearing this, a trace of worry crossed Mom’s face as she let out a gentle sigh. “Ah, you mean her brother. His name is Xi Yuxiu. When he was little, he used to come over to our house to play all the time, and you always managed to tease him until he cried. He’s a few years younger than Mimi, and it looks like he just graduated from college this year it’s probably because of job hunting.”
I chewed the food in my mouth while pondering Mom’s words. A moment later, I set down my chopsticks and said thoughtfully, “Indeed, when it comes to job hunting, parents and children probably find it hard to reach a consensus.”
Mom nodded slightly, agreeing with my view. She continued, “True, back when Mimi graduated and wanted to start her own business, she got into a huge shouting match with her parents. Afterward, her parents pinned all their hopes on her younger brother.”
I remembered Mom mentioning during an earlier chat that Mimi’s family ran a resort, and ever since she graduated from college, her parents had desperately wanted her to work at the family company so she could take over in the future. Instead, she insisted on pursuing Hanfu design, working at a clothing company for a year before using her own savings to start her current online store.
Having one’s own pursuits and passions was truly something to be proud of. Perhaps Xi Yuxiu felt the same way.
After finishing the meal and helping Mom clear the dishes, I returned to my room to continue studying that encrypted document. Just as I was concentrating wholly on figuring out a way to crack it, the doorbell rang abruptly.
Easter Egg
(In Xi Yumi’s Car)
“Brat, what on earth made you run away from home this time?” Xi Yumi asked Xi Yuxiu in the passenger seat with mounting impatience.
“Sis! Don’t call me a brat! I’m not telling you!” Xiuxiu retorted in a rebellious tone.
Screeech— Xi Yumi slammed on the brakes, pulling the car over to the side of the road.
“Get out. If you don’t tell me, don’t even think about coming over to my place to freeload on food and housing,” Xi Yumi threatened.
“I’ll talk, I’ll talk! Sis, I’ll tell you everything,” Xiuxiu capitulated instantly, grabbing the door handle as he caved.
