I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 86
The indoor set was ready. The moment Bai Feifei walked in, she was shocked.
The area outside the operating room was filled with waiting family members. Their attire gave Bai Feifei an extremely down-to-earth and realistic feeling. There was a delivery guy in a uniform, an old person with a child, and a well-dressed woman who was holding her arms and standing in a corner, looking around as if the chairs were too dirty to sit on.
It wasn’t like what she had seen in most TV shows, where a closed operating room door with a close-up on the words “Surgery in Progress” was all there was, and the only people outside were the family members of the patient.
Bai Feifei’s first reaction was to turn and ask Huo Wu, “It’s so real here.”
Huo Wu gave a soft “mm.”
Their chairs had been marked out in advance, but it wasn’t their turn to sit yet. In the script, Li Mingming’s surgery was declared a failure from 8 a.m. to the early hours of the next morning. However, the actual filming wouldn’t take that long. Since the hospital was an indoor location that was easy to create a specific lighting, the scene could be finished in a few days if everything went smoothly.
Bai Feifei felt a little sleepy after a while.
The consequence of staying up all night and having several emotional outbursts was that she was now lethargic. Also, she didn’t have many scenes during the waiting period. Most of the time, she was lying on Huo Wu’s lap, facing away, and sleeping, which was a rare opportunity to be lazy.
Maybe it was because she knew this was the kind of content, so Bai Feifei dared to secretly look at Huo Wu so brazenly the day before.
After a few scenes of the supporting cast coming and going, either with joy or crying, Bai Feifei and Huo Wu finally sat down on their chairs. She had taken a long nap during the filming break and was now talking to Huo Wu as if she had discovered a new treasure. “I found out I can fall asleep fast!”
Huo Wu looked at her, waiting for her to continue.
Bai Feifei quickly followed up. “Just now during filming, I checked the time several times. The longest I slept was five minutes, and the shortest was two minutes. I could fall asleep every time, and every time I woke up, I felt a little more energetic.”
But this kind of sleep was clearly not good for her body.
Huo Wu looked at her and said after a while, “What did you do after I fell asleep last night?”
When she had just entered the room, Bai Feifei and Ling Xinghe’s conversation had reached its final sentence, and she had only heard that last sentence, so she didn’t hear what Bai Feifei had said before.
Bai Feifei was caught off guard. She hesitated for a moment and said in a quieter voice, “I was watching you.”
She was a little worried about Huo Wu’s reprimand, but maybe Huo Wu wouldn’t actually reprimand her. In her subconscious, the things Huo Wu might say weren’t so much a reprimand as a deep-seated worry and disapproval. The former would make her sad because she was being scolded, but the latter would make her feel more guilty and remorseful.
Huo Wu seemed to see through Bai Feifei’s nervousness. She was silent for a moment before saying, “Don’t do that again.”
Bai Feifei looked down and nodded listlessly.
Huo Wu embraced her and sat down. Bai Feifei then saw that Li Ke had given an instruction from behind the camera for them to adjust their positions. Since they weren’t filming yet and were just finalizing the poses and lighting, the sound guy was just standing on the side with his hands on his hips, resting.
Huo Wu’s hand was very light and gentle. When it gently brushed past her ear, Bai Feifei felt her body go numb. It was ticklish, but she didn’t want to scratch. She wanted Huo Wu to caress her with her warm palm, but she felt that one caress wouldn’t be enough to calm her down.
After Bai Feifei’s head was set in place, Huo Wu saw that her wrist was unconsciously held by Bai Feifei. There was no strength in her grip, and she could easily break free with a simple movement. But she just looked at it for a moment. With her other hand, she protected the top of Bai Feifei’s head and said softly, “I didn’t say you couldn’t watch me. Just don’t do it when you’re so tired.”
Actually, last night, she hadn’t just wanted to secretly watch, she had also wanted to secretly kiss her. If she wasn’t afraid of waking up Huo Wu, the thought would have definitely turned into a real action.
Bai Feifei nodded silently again, but she said her unfinished thought out loud. “Is it okay to secretly kiss you too?”
Huo Wu’s lips curved. “Didn’t I tell you already?”
Bai Feifei was stunned for a moment. She wanted to say that she hadn’t asked that question, but in a flash of lightning, she suddenly remembered Huo Wu saying, “If you want to, you can.” It wasn’t just cohabitation. If she wanted to watch her, she could just watch. If she wanted to kiss her, she could just kiss her. She didn’t need to ask.
Bai Feifei nodded. “I understand.”
The filming went very smoothly.
The actors who were a couple in real life might have argued, but perhaps it was because of the emotion they had built up. Their performances were unexpectedly brilliant. They even completely got rid of many bad habits they couldn’t change before. Whether it was the doctor rushing out in the middle of the scene to talk to them, or the emotions of receiving a critical condition notice and signing a bunch of agreements, everything was performed very well.
Bai Feifei had never seen their shows before. During the break, she was still lying on Huo Wu’s lap and didn’t get up. “What kind of bad habits?”
“Bad habits of old actors who always act in their comfort zone,” Huo Wu explained softly, but she also used her hand to block the rising sunlight so that Bai Feifei’s eyes wouldn’t be in the sun. “When they play the same type of role too many times, they’ll have a formula to apply instead of changing it.”
When she said that, even though Bai Feifei hadn’t watched many TV shows, many similar titles appeared in her mind: the cliché mother, the stubborn father, the middle-aged immortal and master… and some villains who didn’t seem very smart.
“What about Ling Xinghe?” Bai Feifei looked up. “He seems to have played a lot of different roles.”
“He got in through the back door and was also a lazy one who stayed in his comfort zone,” Huo Wu said lightly. “He’s also in a hurry and wants to find a breakthrough, but he chose the path of a popular celebrity and took shortcuts when accepting roles. After years and years, he of course has a formula.”
Bai Feifei looked thoughtful. After a few seconds, she rubbed against Huo Wu’s leg and said, “Sister Xue also asked me about a script before. At the time, I told her I wanted to hear your advice.”
In fact, all of her work was still mainly handled by Bai Xue, but Huo Wu and Ji Meng also gave her a lot of help. No matter how powerful Bai Xue was or how strong her connections were, she had been away from the industry for many years. She had to rely on strong connections to get third-tier resources, and first- or second-tier resources were even more impossible.
Bai Feifei’s voice was soft. “Am I causing you all a lot of trouble?”
Because she wasn’t good enough, it was so hard for Bai Xue to find resources for her. If she were a little more capable, had better acting skills, and could be liked by more people, maybe they wouldn’t have to work so hard.
“Why would you say that?” Huo Wu said. “You don’t know how much commercial value you have now. It just needs a certain amount of time to be converted.”
There weren’t many celebrities who were criticized by the entire internet, but few of them were able to make a comeback or transform. Most of them just maintained a reputation for being a “black-red” celebrity. They had a lot of fans, but they weren’t loyal, and they had even more haters who were very loyal.
Bai Feifei was different from them. Everything about her was real. The official announcements with blue text on a white background made an exception to release one after another because of her. After a thorough investigation by the central news channel, they also made an exception and mentioned her name for a month. Even now, Bai Feifei would occasionally be named and praised.
Bai Feifei seemed to have been comforted. She gave a soft “mm” and didn’t say anything else.
The filming unconsciously went into the night.
Today went smoothly. The props team was adjusting the time-related props and doing the final cleanup check.
The few short naps Bai Feifei took during the day made her feel a lot more comfortable. She was re-watching the scene on a small monitor. Li Ke and Huo Wu were quietly chatting not far away. They said that Bai Feifei’s actual sleep gave her a unique sense of calmness, which was much better than having her and Wu Ling just waiting outside.
And perhaps because she was outside, it was hard for her to fall into a deep sleep, so she was very well-behaved when she was sleeping. She didn’t move around or have any extra movements. This resulted in the camera cutting to her several times without needing to make any adjustments.
At night, Ling Xinghe filmed his final scene.
The staff jokingly said that he came to the set and left the set lying down. Ling Xinghe also smiled and said, “I’m probably the most relaxed person in the whole crew. I’m either sitting or lying down.”
Outside the operating room, only Li Mingming’s mother and Fusang were left. Wu Ling had to go to work at the bar at night, so she left in the evening.
Not long after she left, the operating room door was pushed open from the inside. The doctor rushed out and declared to Li Mingming’s mother that the surgery had failed.
Perhaps she was too tired or couldn’t accept the news in such a short time. Li Mingming’s mother’s expression was blank. She was listening to the doctor’s words, but it was like a blank tone. She only subconsciously pulled back the white cloth covering his face a little.
Fusang took two steps forward.
This was not the first time she had seen a dead person. The first time she saw a dead person face to face, it was her father’s shattered body. Even after it had been repaired, her father’s entire body was still covered in bandages. Fusang remembered reaching out to try to hold her father’s hand, but she couldn’t.
That arm was surprisingly heavy. Only then did she realize that a person’s body was much heavier after they died than when they were alive. It was also the first time she realized that when all the bones in a person’s body were broken, it would feel soft, like a piece of rotten meat with no support. The shattered bones would even pierce the flesh that had lost its elasticity, and a bloody, foul-smelling liquid would gush out.
A pair of hands passed through her line of sight, trying to grab Li Mingming’s hand, which was filled with needle marks and bruises. But those hands also fell heavily onto the hospital bed and then fell down.
Fusang heard the woman ask her, “Why is it like this?”
She didn’t choose the nurse pushing the cart. Instead, she chose to ask her, which in itself seemed to be a reason why she couldn’t accept the reality.
Fusang’s hands were in her pockets. She said in a very cold tone, “When a person dies, of course, they will be like this.”
The cart was slowly pushed away, disappearing from the not-so-long operating room and heading toward the elevator, which was already open, to move the body to the morgue.
Fusang was being hit by the woman who was half a step behind her. At first, the woman didn’t use any force. It wasn’t until she was hurting that she finally used a little force to break free from the woman’s grip.
The woman collapsed onto the ground in despair, crying as if she had lost all support. Large tears fell onto the ground, forming a small puddle in a short amount of time.
“Is this the first time you’ve seen a dead person?” Fusang half-squatted in front of her. Her voice was gentle, and her tone was calm, but what she said was chilling. “How many people died because of your husband? How many people died because of your son? How many bodies have you seen in the morgue, and how many bodies have you seen at the police station?”
The woman’s crying gradually became softer. She looked at Fusang in disbelief.
Fusang finally smiled slightly and said, “Retribution has come, Auntie. You’ve done so many bad things, so why are you crying now?”
