I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 7
Fu Xiaoxiao pulled out a couple of bandages from a cabinet drawer, putting them on her face like a fake mustache.
Bai Feifei grabbed her by the neck and shook her gently, not using any force. Seeing her still giggling, Bai Feifei couldn’t help but grit her teeth.
“So, that was Huo Wu who came to see you just now?” Fu Xiaoxiao asked.
Bai Feifei responded listlessly, then added, “She got mad and ran off again.”
Fu Xiaoxiao, completely oblivious, said shamelessly, “Well, you really shouldn’t have done that. How could you make her angry?”
Bai Feifei was speechless.
She was wondering whether to stew Fu Xiaoxiao or steam her, when Ji Meng suddenly returned.
Bai Feifei looked behind her, but there was no Huo Wu. Not even after Ji Meng closed the door.
“She’s in the car,” Ji Meng explained, pointing to a bag on the balcony. “She forgot something.”
It was a black, inconspicuous woman’s bag located where Huo Wu had been sitting, at the corner of the balcony and the wall.
Bai Feifei nodded, her eyes wide and watery, like a newborn puppy.
Ji Meng looked at her a little longer, finding her black hair and milky white skin surprisingly pleasing to the eye. She almost wanted to pet her.
When Bai Feifei saw Ji Meng was about to leave, she knew she might not get a second chance like this. Clutching the blanket, she instinctively asked, “Sister Mengmeng, can I talk to you for a moment?”
Ji Meng was a little surprised.
She had worked with Huo Wu for many years and had helped nurture a few award-winning actors. But in this industry, partners often came and went. She had been targeted by someone and had rested for a few years. After that, she focused solely on Huo Wu. Over the years, she had become less inclined to socialize with unimportant people, and her reputation as an unapproachable and difficult person grew.
It was rare to meet someone who was so eager to talk to her and didn’t annoy her.
Ji Meng stopped what she was doing. Thinking of Huo Wu in the car, she smiled and said, “Sure.”
Fu Xiaoxiao, with her natural knack for being a good luck charm, was very perceptive in these matters. With her two bandages still on her face, she left without a word.
They didn’t really talk about much.
Bai Feifei tentatively asked about Huo Wu’s boyfriend.
This was private information, and as a manager, Ji Meng shouldn’t have told her. But Ji Meng had witnessed what had happened earlier and probably knew that Bai Feifei and Huo Wu’s relationship was not ordinary. Asking now, even if she was seen as a jealous little girlfriend, was better than getting nothing.
Ji Meng smiled, as if she had thought of something.
Seeing Bai Feifei’s expectant look, Ji Meng thought for a moment and actually said, “They’re doing very well.”
Bai Feifei’s mouth fell open. Her eyes turned red from the shock. She thought to herself that asking the question was worse than not asking at all; it only made her feel more miserable.
She mumbled a dejected, “Oh.”
Ji Meng smiled, finishing up and getting ready to leave. Bai Feifei was only down for a moment before she bounced back. She picked up the IV stand, put on her slippers, and was ready to follow her downstairs.
Ji Meng glanced at her, silently asking what she was doing.
Bai Feifei explained, “I’m going downstairs to say goodbye to Ah Wu. I didn’t get to say a proper farewell just now.”
Not only did she not get to say a proper farewell, but Huo Wu had looked like she was running away in a rage.
Ji Meng didn’t stop her, letting Bai Feifei follow her downstairs. Actually, it was Huo Wu who had insisted on coming back for the empty bag.
Bai Feifei was a person who knew how to be grateful.
The elevator was empty. Once inside, she spoke first. “Sister Mengmeng, thank you for persuading Ah Wu to come see me today.”
Ji Meng thought Bai Feifei had misunderstood. She didn’t take credit and gave a kind smile. “When did I persuade her? She came on her own.”
Bai Feifei was stunned. She saw her own blurry reflection in the elevator doors. Her eyes seemed to have widened.
She said, “It wasn’t you, then…”
The moment the words left her mouth, the elevator dinged and arrived.
Bai Feifei swallowed the rest of her sentence. She felt the little deer in her heart come alive again, and it was bouncing around like it had just taken a stimulant.
Ji Meng saw that Bai Feifei’s eyes were shining brighter than the lights in the hospital lobby. She was reminded of something director Li Ke had once said.
Some people’s eyes are so expressive that the moment you look at them, your emotions follow theirs.
She asked casually, “I remember your hair wasn’t black before. How did you get it back to its original color?”
When it came to the original owner’s story, Bai Feifei’s eyelids twitched. She started to make things up. “I’ve been into the pure schoolgirl look lately. It’s been a while since I felt that way, so I wanted to try it.”
Ji Meng’s eyebrows twitched at her words.
What Bai Feifei said wasn’t completely made up. Many people in the industry liked a unique look. The pure college student was definitely on the list… But “pure” wasn’t just about black hair and a school uniform.
It required a good body, fair skin, big eyes, and a smart, yet innocent demeanor that was also bewitching.
Aside from everything else, Bai Feifei actually fit the description.
Ji Meng didn’t know how to feel. She simply advised, “Don’t say that in front of others in the future.”
Bai Feifei looked at her, tilting her head and grinning. “I know, Sister Mengmeng. I have my limits.”
They arrived at the parking garage.
It was dark underground, and even with the low-wattage fluorescent lights, it was hard to find things. The car lights weren’t on either, for fear of being photographed.
Bai Feifei stumbled in the dark with her IV stand, tapping on Huo Wu’s car window.
Huo Wu looked up at her, her eyes calm. There was no panic or anger, but she didn’t roll down the window either.
Bai Feifei put down the IV stand and tapped on the window again with her hand.
Blood had started to flow back into the IV line.
Huo Wu frowned and lowered the car window just a crack.
Bai Feifei pretended not to understand the rejection conveyed by the crack. She widened her eyes and said, “Ah Wu, can you lower it a little more? Don’t worry about being photographed. I’ll block the view for you.”
Huo Wu paused, then actually lowered it a bit more.
Ji Meng pulled up the privacy curtain in the car.
Although a curtain couldn’t block all the sound, it was better than nothing, at least psychologically.
Ji Meng knew everything about Huo Wu. They had been partners for so many years that their relationship was even closer than with Huo Wu’s later-known older sister and younger brother.
Bai Feifei understood and knew there was no need to hide things from her. She said softly, “I didn’t not wear a bra on purpose just now.”
Huo Wu didn’t look at her.
Bai Feifei continued, “I have an imaging exam tomorrow, so I have to fast. The nurse told me not to wear a bra. I was about to go to sleep, so I took it off.”
Huo Wu still ignored her.
Bai Feifei’s face was a little red, probably from shyness. Her eyes became watery. “You… you know this, don’t you? I never wear one when I sleep.”
The curtain in the front seemed to twitch twice after Bai Feifei said that.
Huo Wu was speechless.
She looked away, her face expressionless, and glanced at Bai Feifei’s flawless face. She unconsciously rubbed her thumb and index finger together. When she realized what she was doing, she calmly spread her hand out and placed it flat on her knee. Her face remained a blank slate.
So Bai Feifei couldn’t see anything. She only noticed Huo Wu’s thick, long eyelashes, which she had always loved and loved to touch. In the past, when she felt like it, Huo Wu wouldn’t dodge. She would close her eyes and let Bai Feifei do whatever she wanted.
Now, she certainly wouldn’t have that privilege.
Bai Feifei perked up. “I’ve explained myself. Are you still mad?”
Huo Wu pressed her lips together and looked away. “What is there to be mad about?”
“Okay, so you’re not mad then,” Bai Feifei said, smiling brightly. “Since you’re not mad, when I find you again later, can you reply to my messages yourself instead of having Sister Mengmeng do it?”
Huo Wu saw the curtain in front twitch again.
She said softly, “Okay.”
Seeing Huo Wu agree, Bai Feifei finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She hadn’t really thought about what to say to Huo Wu, or rather, how to talk to her in a way that wouldn’t make her hate her.
She lowered her tiptoes and took a step back to an empty space. She said to Huo Wu, “Then I won’t bother you anymore.”
Ji Meng pulled up the curtain, and the car slowly drove away.
Ji Meng looked back in the side mirror.
“The little girl is still watching you,” Ji Meng said with a smile.
Huo Wu’s gaze inadvertently fell on the side mirror. In the mirror, Bai Feifei stood next to a tall IV stand, in a loose hospital gown. Her long, thick black hair fell around her, making her look much smaller.
She looked… pitiful.
Huo Wu’s breath almost caught in her throat. A moment later, a smile appeared on her face, a mix of self-mockery and something else.
The car didn’t go fast, and there were many speed bumps. It took a while for Bai Feifei’s figure to completely disappear.
Huo Wu looked away and said nothing.
Ji Meng observed her expression. As she watched the road, she said as if casually, “She asked me about your boyfriend upstairs.”
Huo Wu listened quietly without any reaction. Ji Meng thought she had guessed wrong.
Not until the car drove out of the underground parking lot and into the bright lights and noise of the street did Ji Meng hear Huo Wu ask, “What did you say?”
Ji Meng smiled, effortlessly driving onto the main road and turning on some music. It was a folk singer who sounded like she was about to run out of breath, her voice twisting and turning.
She hummed along for a bit. When she saw Huo Wu frown, she said unhurriedly, “What else would I say? The official statement has to be consistent, so I said your relationship is good.”
Huo Wu’s gaze shifted to the noisy street outside.
Summer streets were always especially lively, filled with countless vendors and businesses, a dazzling array of goods, and a constant stream of enticing smells.
It should have been the most familiar and calming scene she knew, but for some reason, she felt a little restless.
“Did you get it all sorted out?” Fu Xiaoxiao asked her.
Bai Feifei thought for a moment. “No. The revolution has not yet succeeded. Comrades still have a long way to go.”
“That’s tough, babe,” Fu Xiaoxiao said with a sigh, noticing the tape on her hand was loose and pressing it down.
It was very late. All the visitors had left, and the inpatient ward doors were closed. Bai Feifei lay on the bed, her eyes shining in the glow of the night lights, looking gentle.
She whispered, “I’ll definitely succeed.”
Then, she slid down and buried her head in the blanket.
Ji Meng went back to the hotel with Huo Wu. Both of them looked a little tired.
Huo Wu’s makeup felt heavy. Ji Meng sat on her sofa for a while and said, “Go rest after you’re done. Should I ask for a day off for you tomorrow?”
“No, I’ll work as usual,” Huo Wu said, starting to take out her hair clips and remove her makeup.
Ji Meng hummed in agreement, taking out her phone to deal with the messages she hadn’t looked at all afternoon.
As she scrolled, she closed the unimportant work messages and opened Weibo. She habitually searched for keywords related to Huo Wu.
Suddenly, she saw something and raised her eyebrows, smiling. She said to Huo Wu, “Oh, the little girl is trending.”
