I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 6
“How are you? Feeling better?”
When Ji Meng entered the room, she squinted, blinded by the ceiling light that made her feel like she had entered heaven.
Huo Wu didn’t say anything. She was sitting on the sofa with her back to Ji Meng, her head lowered, doing who knows what. The TV across from her was on so loud that it completely drowned out Ji Meng’s voice. Huo Wu probably hadn’t heard her.
Ji Meng walked over, patted her on the shoulder, and lowered the TV volume.
Huo Wu snapped back to reality, quickly putting away her phone as if to cover up what she was doing.
Having worked together for years, Ji Meng naturally noticed her momentary awkwardness, but she didn’t ask. It was her professional duty to simply remind her, “Remember to tell me if there’s anything wrong.”
“It’s nothing,” Huo Wu said calmly. “Have the news stories been handled?”
“Yes,” Ji Meng paused. “The dress you wore last night stunned everyone online. We started the hype last night. You left in a hurry, but the fans and paparazzi who were waiting outside still got some photos of you. A few of them turned out to be masterpieces. The trending topics are all those shots of your profile and the amazing photos. They’ve attracted a lot of people to swoon over your face. The negative publicity has been suppressed by this.”
Huo Wu didn’t say anything else.
After a moment, she said, “Get ready, we’re going out.”
“Where to?” Ji Meng asked.
Huo Wu stood up and looked out the window. It was dark outside.
The words “This is Ji Meng” were still hanging brightly on her phone screen. She glanced at them and then at her reflection in the window.
Huo Wu said, “The hospital.”
“Get some good rest tonight. We have imaging scheduled for tomorrow morning. You can’t eat or drink before the exam,” the nurse instructed Bai Feifei after observing for a while to make sure the IV was flowing properly.
Bai Feifei nodded weakly, her eyes red.
The nurse looked at her for a while longer and couldn’t help but say, “Have I seen you somewhere before?”
“Probably not,” Bai Feifei said without much energy. “I have a very common face.”
With black hair, white skin, and a porcelain complexion, her face was bright and clear, making her look very young. It was the complete opposite of a common face.
The nurse couldn’t help but stare at Bai Feifei’s face a few more times, but her professional integrity won out. She didn’t stay long, only saying, “If you’re not feeling well, press the call button on the bedside. Is someone staying with you?”
“Yes, there is,” Bai Feifei answered, one word at a time.
Fu Xiaoxiao leaned her head in. “Me, me, me! I’m staying with her!”
The nurse finally left, looking back three times.
Bai Feifei lay flat again, her hands clasped over her stomach, staring serenely at the ceiling. She had no expression, not even moving her eyeballs.
If she didn’t occasionally blink, Fu Xiaoxiao would have thought she was dead.
She poked Bai Feifei’s side. “Rejected again?”
Bai Feifei winced at the poke. She twisted a little but didn’t say anything. The downward turn of her lips said it all.
Fu Xiaoxiao sighed with her, holding her face. “Why don’t you cry for a bit? I’m going to get you some hot water and toiletries. Can you be done crying by the time I get back?”
“Yeah, probably,” Bai Feifei said, sitting up with her legs crossed. She took out her phone again.
“Crying won’t help,” Bai Feifei said to Fu Xiaoxiao, staring at her phone as if facing a great enemy. “You go ahead. Let me be alone for a bit. I need to think.”
“Alright, fine.” Fu Xiaoxiao got up and took 200 yuan from her bag. Thinking it wasn’t enough, she took another 300 yuan from Bai Feifei’s bag and said casually, “Use that smart little brain of yours.”
With that, Fu Xiaoxiao skipped away.
Because of this, when the door was knocked on again, Bai Feifei didn’t even look up, thinking it was just Fu Xiaoxiao knocking for fun.
The door opened, and two sets of footsteps, light and slow, entered the room.
Bai Feifei thought it was the nurse coming back for a late-night checkup. Her eyes were still fixed on her phone, and she didn’t look up, just waiting for the nurse to ask a question.
After a moment, there was no sound.
Bai Feifei finally slowly looked up. Her eyes and mouth, as if in unison, slowly widened as she looked at the two people in front of her.
This was the first time Ji Meng had ever seen someone’s eyes, in a matter of seconds, perfectly convey the words “rise from the ashes.”
Bai Feifei blinked pitifully, her index finger picking at the bedsheet.
Huo Wu had come in a hurry. She hadn’t even taken off her makeup and hair styling. She had only removed her obstructive jewelry and changed her clothes, otherwise, taking off her makeup would have taken a whole day.
She was almost fully armed, with a baseball cap, a black mask, and a long trench coat. In the middle of summer, she was completely covered up, even wearing sunglasses at night. Even in the private VIP room of this hospital, she couldn’t let her guard down.
Because of this, Bai Feifei couldn’t see the tension hidden behind her heavy armor.
But Ji Meng, who was standing beside her, noticed it.
At that moment, her gaze rested on Bai Feifei’s face for a second.
Last night, she hadn’t entered the room. She was outside handling the aftermath, only knowing that someone inside had been set up, but she didn’t know who it was until later. She had no idea who it was, let alone seeing Bai Feifei’s face.
Now that she saw it, she almost thought her memory was failing her.
“Ah Wu!” Bai Feifei’s eyes shone like stars.
But Huo Wu didn’t move.
Ji Meng slowly closed her mouth and even took a few steps back.
This situation…
Luckily, Bai Feifei wasn’t angry or annoyed. She had a blown IV. She pressed a cotton swab against the back of her hand and turned off the IV tube. She looked up at Huo Wu pitifully and said, “Can you take off your sunglasses? I can’t see your eyes.”
Huo Wu was silent for a moment, then she actually reached up and took off her sunglasses.
Bai Feifei’s eyes lit up again. “Can you take off your mask, too?”
Huo Wu frowned.
Bai Feifei’s expression instantly changed to one of profound grievance, her voice trembling. “I can’t hear you clearly with your mask on. I’m a little hard of hearing because I feel so bad.”
Ji Meng was speechless.
What kind of illness makes someone hard of hearing? And what does being hard of hearing have to do with someone wearing a mask?
Yet, she saw Huo Wu slowly take off her mask.
Ji Meng’s eyes flickered.
The overly delicate and beautiful face was revealed, completely devoid of any emotion. When Huo Wu didn’t smile, she exuded a natural air of “do not approach.”
But Bai Feifei didn’t care at all.
She bent her eyes and grinned at Huo Wu.
Then she turned her head and said to Ji Meng, “Sister Mengmeng, can you leave me and Ah Wu to talk alone for a bit?”
It had been a long time since Ji Meng had heard that name. In the past few years, because of her last name, Bai Feifei had been very rude to her, mostly using derogatory terms.
She glanced at Huo Wu, then nodded. “I’ll be right outside.”
She thoughtfully closed the door behind her, and when she was out, she took a mask from her pocket and put it on.
Not only Huo Wu, but she also had to be careful to hide herself. Otherwise, everyone would know that wherever she was, Huo Wu was definitely there.
Inside the room, the back of Bai Feifei’s hand finally stopped bleeding.
Huo Wu ignored her, reaching for the medical chart at the foot of the bed and reading it. It was acute gastroenteritis caused by an ulcer. A whole stack of tests was ordered, including a gastroscopy. It was a lot of suffering.
After she finished reading, Bai Feifei obediently looked up and said, “I really didn’t lie to you. I really am sick.”
Huo Wu’s lips curled into a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. She threw the medical chart back down. It dangled on a string, the plastic board hitting the foot of the bed with a light sound.
Half of the IV had been administered. It must have had some pain-relieving components. Although Bai Feifei’s face was pale, she could still feel the lingering pain, but she looked a lot more energetic than before.
She scooted back, patted the edge of the bed with one hand, and looked at Huo Wu. “Will you sit down?”
Huo Wu turned and pulled a chair from the corner of the room.
Bai Feifei didn’t give up. She continued to talk to herself. “Xiaoxiao brought me here. You know her; we were so close when we were kids. She went to buy me some things. Did you see her when you came up? She’s so beautiful now and tall, but she’s still like a kid…”
Huo Wu watched her with a cold expression. Bai Feifei’s voice grew softer and softer until it disappeared.
Huo Wu then spoke, her face cold, her voice extremely low and emotionless. “Bai Feifei, I didn’t come here to listen to your nonsense.”
Bai Feifei’s eyes instantly welled up. Guilt and shame rushed over her, threatening to consume her.
In the past… Huo Wu would never have stood for her being upset.
She wouldn’t even say a harsh word, let alone let her cry. Even if she recited the weather forecast for the day a hundred times, Huo Wu would listen patiently, smiling, and give her a glass of water to soothe her throat. Then she would seriously repeat Bai Feifei’s words, telling her to wear sunscreen on sunny days and bring an umbrella on rainy ones.
Bai Feifei remembered Huo Wu’s kindness, held back a sob, and pushed the tears back. She whispered, “I just…”
She just wanted to talk to Huo Wu more.
“Have you thought of a request?” Huo Wu asked.
Bai Feifei slowly shook her head.
She didn’t know what to ask for. She just wanted an excuse to see her.
A cold smile appeared on Huo Wu’s face. Her body was still in a completely guarded position, with her elbows propped on her knees.
Bai Feifei pursed her lips, finally realizing with painful clarity that the Huo Wu sitting in front of her was no longer the Huo Wu who had unconditionally spoiled her six years ago.
She took a deep breath to calm herself down. When she looked up again, she was much more composed.
Huo Wu glanced at her, her lips tightly pressed together.
The summer weather was hot. Even with the air conditioning in the car and the hospital turned down low, the short distance from the car to the inpatient ward was enough to make her sweat in her trench coat.
After entering the hospital, the cold air made her sweat turn icy, making her body feel uncomfortably clammy.
Her palms were clammy with a cold sweat. She didn’t know if it was leftover hot sweat from the journey or cold sweat from her emotional tension. She could only clench the mask in her hand, trying to wipe the sweat from her palms.
Huo Wu looked up. As an actress, she knew how to show her most unapproachable and cold side. “Three wishes it is.”
Bai Feifei opened her mouth, then lowered her head and said, “Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
Huo Wu waited for a while. There was silence between them.
Just as she was about to get up, her clothes made a slight rustling sound, but Bai Feifei, who had been watching her every move, stopped her.
Huo Wu looked at her. Bai Feifei looked up nervously, clutching the clean white bedsheet. She said pitifully, “I… I want to hug you. Can I?”
Huo Wu didn’t answer, standing tall.
Bai Feifei said pitifully, “Can it be my first request?”
Time seemed to pass very slowly.
Just when Bai Feifei thought Huo Wu was going to get angry and leave, Huo Wu finally moved.
She slowly walked a few steps toward the window. Bai Feifei’s eyes were almost full of tears. She could only stop herself from crying and lunged from the bed into Huo Wu’s arms.
Huo Wu smelled wonderful.
She didn’t like sweet perfumes and preferred some privately blended cool scents in the summer. Bai Feifei used to blend them for her, using everything from bottles of cheap lotions to expensive, tens of thousands of dollars per milliliter of rare spice extracts. Now, she didn’t know who had the honor of having their scent linger on Huo Wu.
She took a light sniff and realized that Huo Wu’s body seemed to be a little tense.
Bai Feifei couldn’t bear to let go. She hugged Huo Wu’s waist tighter and nuzzled closer to her.
Huo Wu grabbed her shoulders, forced her to look up, and said almost through gritted teeth, “Bai Feifei, you’re not even wearing a bra?”
Bai Feifei’s eyes widened. She instinctively looked down at her empty neckline.
The hospital gown’s neckline wasn’t low, but it was very loose. In her current position, as long as Huo Wu looked down, she could clearly see the gap.
Not to mention her entire upper body was practically pressed against Huo Wu’s chest just now.
Bai Feifei immediately shook her head nervously. “No, it’s because…”
“BABE!” a female voice shouted from outside the door, getting closer and closer, full of cheerfulness. “I’m back! I’m sleeping with you tonight. Did you miss me?”
Sincere love
Huo Wu pushed her away, took a mask from her pocket, and quickly put it on just before the person entered the room. She opened the door and left without looking back.
Fu Xiaoxiao stumbled as she was hit, nearly falling. She put her hands on her hips and cursed, “Watch where you’re going!”
Huo Wu suddenly turned her head and gave her a look, her pupils dark and emotionless. The look scared Fu Xiaoxiao so much that she froze against the wall.
By the time Fu Xiaoxiao recovered, Huo Wu was nowhere to be seen.
She patted her chest, which was now hiccuping from the fright. She said with a trembling voice, “Babe, I think I just saw the mafia. Did Uncle borrow money from a loan shark before he left? Was that person here to collect… Huh? Babe?”
Bai Feifei had been sent sprawling on the bed by the momentum and was unable to recover for a long time.
She looked at Fu Xiaoxiao’s big face hovering over her and finally said, one word at a time, “Fu Xiaoxiao, I’m going to kill you—!”
