I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 47
The owners of the restaurant returned shortly. When they saw Huo Wu, their expressions weren’t the usual politeness, fawning, or dislike that tenants show landlords. Instead, it was something like gratitude. Bai Feifei noticed that the owner’s leg was not in good shape; one was amputated, and he walked with a limp. The owner’s wife also looked very thin and small. Bai Feifei didn’t say much. She just moved a small stool and sat opposite Huo Wu, listening to her chat with the owner’s wife.
After just a few words, the owner’s wife learned that they had driven all the way and hadn’t eaten yet, so she hurried her husband into the kitchen to make something for them. The owner’s wife adjusted the hanging fan so that it blew towards them, and then she smiled and went into the kitchen to get busy with her husband. At one point, Huo Wu went into the kitchen. She didn’t enter but just stood at the door and gave a few instructions. Bai Feifei’s eyes fell on the very clean fan blades, then on the perfectly smooth tablecloth on the table.
Before long, the owner came out of the kitchen with two bowls of small wontons. Bai Feifei took the white porcelain spoon Huo Wu handed her and stared at the bowls in front of them, a little lost in thought. Huo Wu’s bowl had chili and cilantro, while hers was a lighter sour soup. She could smell the fragrant rice vinegar. Bai Feifei held her chopsticks in one hand and her spoon in the other, and she called out, “A-Wu…”
Huo Wu looked up. She pushed the chili and rice vinegar on the table towards Bai Feifei and said softly, “Eat first.” Bai Feifei loved spicy food, but she couldn’t eat too much, and the amount depended on the situation. She usually decided how much to add herself. Bai Feifei let out a small “oh” and added a little to taste. Her eyes lit up. “This chili is so fragrant!”
“We fried the chili ourselves,” the owner’s wife said with a smile, holding out two bags of chili sauce. The bags were sealed chili oil. She said with a warm expression, “It’s more fragrant than what you can buy outside. Take these with you to eat. If you run out, come back to get more from me.”
Bai Feifei looked at Huo Wu, who didn’t refuse and accepted the bags.
They had a very satisfying meal. In the end, Bai Feifei drank all the soup in one go. She held her full stomach, groaning as she slumped against the back of her chair. She stretched out her words with a hint of a charming, spoiled air that was impossible to dislike. “How long does it take to drive back?”
Huo Wu looked at the navigation and said, “About twenty-five minutes.” The time difference was no more than two minutes. It wasn’t too close or too far. If they had free time, they could drive over here for a visit.
On the way back, her mood was different from the drive there. The wind blowing in her face felt less hot and more refreshing. Bai Feifei felt drowsy. She had so many things she wanted to ask, but she was too tired to form a coherent thought. Her hands idly tapped on the seat, like she was playing the piano, tapping out a rhythm for some unknown song. Huo Wu occasionally looked at her in the rearview mirror. As they approached the last straight intersection, Huo Wu said, “Want to hold hands?”
Bai Feifei’s mind was still in a ‘sleepy after eating’ state. She couldn’t process the sentence easily, and her only response was, “Huh?”
Huo Wu offered her right hand. Bai Feifei blankly put her hand on it and heard Huo Wu say, “Only for two minutes.”
It might even be less than that. There was less than two kilometers left on the straight stretch of road, but Bai Feifei felt like a phone that was about to shut down but was suddenly plugged in. Her half-closed eyes opened wide again, and she was filled with joy. “That’s enough!”
The highway section was ten minutes long. After that, there was a winding ten-minute road, and then they would enter the city. Bai Feifei didn’t even realize when she fell asleep. When she woke up, she heard Huo Wu’s voice next to her. She slowly opened her eyes and met Huo Wu’s gaze head-on. She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but when she first opened her eyes, Huo Wu seemed to be looking at her arm.
Huo Wu didn’t stop talking. She said “okay,” “I’m back,” and “I’ll be right up” into her phone before hanging up. Only then did Bai Feifei realize their hands were still clasped. She blinked. Before she could say anything, Huo Wu naturally pulled her hand away. “Now that you’re up, go on upstairs. Rest a little, and we’ll continue filming in the afternoon.”
Perhaps Bai Feifei’s disappointed expression was too obvious. Huo Wu looked at her for a moment, then patted Bai Feifei’s soft hair. “I have to go revise a script.”
Bai Feifei also knew that serious work couldn’t be delayed. Her intense emotions were once again pushed down in a daze. She and Huo Wu got out of the car on opposite sides and walked to different elevators. As the elevator doors closed, Huo Wu still hadn’t entered the elevator on the other side. Bai Feifei unenthusiastically unlocked her phone, but she didn’t do anything for a long time.
After a moment, she typed the words “when can a couple…” into the search bar. A message suddenly popped up at the top.
[Huo Wu: I won’t be on set this afternoon. Come over tonight and let’s have dinner together.]
The little light bulb over Bai Feifei’s head lit up again. She became energized and started typing again. “Can I bring Xiaoxiao?” She hesitated for a moment before she could send the message, and she added two words: [Bai Feifei: Can I get some takeout for Xiaoxiao?]
Huo Wu hadn’t replied yet, and the elevator arrived. As Bai Feifei walked out, she switched to another app, but she happened to see the automatically completed suggestions based on what she had typed.
When can a couple… The suggestions were: live together, sleep, do it, hold hands, kiss.
“Kissing” was at the very end… You can live together before you can kiss? Bai Feifei couldn’t understand the logic. She felt that Baidu wasn’t very reliable, so she closed the app.
Coincidentally, Huo Wu texted her just before she entered her room.
[Huo Wu: Yes]
Bai Feifei’s hand stopped on the doorknob. She guiltily patted the bags she was holding. The chili sauce and meat buns from the restaurant were still there. She could give them to Fu Xiaoxiao to hold her over.
