- Chapter 59 - A First hand Experiment
The lighting in the room was dim. Qi Xiyao’s vision was hazy as she leaned half-lying across the cool surface of the desk, gripping the edge tightly.
Printed pages, still carrying the faint scent of fresh ink, were scattered across the floor. When it was over, Yu Peirong bent down and calmly picked up the discarded napkin and tossed it into the trash can.
They took a shower together afterward. When they came back, their skin carried a light scent of lavender. That bottle of lavender body wash had been chosen by Yu Peirong. She said the previous white peach scent was too similar to Qi Xiyao’s pheromones and could easily overlap.
Since the room was not cold, Yu Peirong changed into a simple sleep dress. It was a thin, long-sleeved nightgown, loose in her hands.
In private, she had always been good at separating work from personal life. Still, she used to be a theater fanatic. When she was reading scripts, she could go hours without eating, drinking, or even moving. Her agent had been driven to the point of frustration and had to gently remind her using cases of people collapsing from exhaustion.
She had now selected three or four scripts she liked, and it just so happened that her preferences closely matched Qi Xiyao’s.
In the end, she ruled out a crime drama. Qi Xiyao had recently starred in an indie film, and it was time to choose a more mainstream project. Yu Peirong set that one aside and continued reviewing the others.
One of the scripts Qi Xiyao had read earlier resembled a sapphic version of Lust, Caution. The story was intense and packed with explicit scenes. The screenwriter used physical intimacy to portray the emotional conflict between the two leads in a chaotic world, showing how they released their suppressed desires through passion.
As an actress, some boundaries were difficult to avoid. However, Qi Xiyao had always been sensitive about physical contact. As an Omega, her body was naturally more reactive. Scenes that involved too much closeness often made her uncomfortable on a psychological level.
And aside from her own feelings, it would be hard to believe that any partner would feel entirely comfortable watching their girlfriend perform scenes that pushed right up to the edge of censorship. Whether her co-star was an Alpha, Beta, or another Omega, the level of exposure in this script was difficult to justify.
Still, Yu Peirong was never the type to control her partner’s career based on jealousy. She would never forbid Qi Xiyao from accepting a role.
She reviewed the synopsis again and flipped through the beginning of the script. The story itself was strong. The only major issue was the amount of sexually charged content. It had potential, so she planned to keep it as a backup.
If Qi Xiyao wanted the role, Yu Peirong would not stop her. She might feel a little bitter inside, but she would respect her decision. After all, this was Qi Xiyao’s career. Yu Peirong had no plans to return to acting or relive her past life. That version of herself belonged to another world.
In this one, she was focused on building Yi Shui Entertainment into something real and lasting.
“This one is too much,” Qi Xiyao said suddenly. “You’ve read it too, haven’t you? I don’t want it.”
Yu Peirong pressed her lips together, thinking maybe Qi Xiyao was worried about her reaction. She quickly assured her that she truly didn’t mind and wanted her to choose what felt right.
Qi Xiyao smiled gently. “It’s not because I think you’ll be upset. I just don’t like this kind of script.”
She didn’t have any issue with actresses who took on such roles. She simply didn’t feel comfortable accepting parts that focused too heavily on provocative content without real artistic meaning.
The script she was holding now didn’t feel like serious art. It wasn’t like the bedroom scenes in Lust, Caution that were essential to the film’s emotional arc. This one felt more like shock value aimed at ticket sales. No one needed to claim it was about art.
After hearing Qi Xiyao’s thoughts, Yu Peirong let out a small laugh.
“That’s fine. We can just try those scenes for practice in private instead.”
Later, they reviewed the other scripts again and finalized three choices. One was a historical drama, and the other two were modern pieces. All three had strong potential. One of them featured two female leads building their careers together. It was the kind of film that could be submitted for major awards.
Because of the recent issues involving Quan Zhihong, Yu Peirong decided to have Zheng Xiuxue review the scripts first. Zheng had a bright and friendly personality and strong connections in the industry. She was well-liked by many directors and writers.
As soon as she heard these were for Qi Xiyao’s next project, she enthusiastically promised to help.
“Don’t worry, leave it to me.”
Just a few days later, Zheng returned after handling everything with impressive speed.
“Pass on Han Palace Moon,” she said, sitting in Yu Peirong’s office with a cup of honey water in hand. “That director is impossible to deal with. He has a bad temper and some disturbing rumors going around about how he treats actresses.”
Yu Peirong had discussed the situation with Qi Xiyao and decided to tell Zheng the full story about Quan Zhihong. Zheng had reacted with a disgusted frown but didn’t comment further. As an Omega herself, she empathized deeply with the idea of someone targeting her own sister-in-law.
The director of that historical drama was a Beta with a poor reputation, so the script was eliminated. Between the remaining two, Zheng leaned toward a modern workplace drama. It was a television series, so it might not be as prestigious as a film, but it had solid viewership potential.
Yu Peirong had already memorized every detail of the three scripts. When she recalled the content of the other one, she looked up.
“I actually prefer the film. It has deeper meaning, and it could really sharpen Yaoyao’s acting. More importantly, the story will resonate with today’s audience.”
In her previous life, Yu Peirong had won best actress awards and starred in many films. She knew audience preferences well. This world had largely normalized Alpha and Omega equality, but Omegas still faced discrimination.
The film didn’t rely on slogans or heavy-handed themes. It subtly portrayed the challenges an Omega woman faced as she built her life from nothing. Step by step, she achieved everything through her own strength.
Yu Peirong thought Zheng would appreciate it, but the younger woman hesitated.
“This one…” She avoided eye contact. “I don’t like the screenwriter.”
Yu Peirong was about to ask why but quickly noticed something off in Zheng’s tone and changed the subject.
In the end, the three of them agreed to go with the film. Zheng would handle the negotiations, while Yu Peirong focused on other tasks.
A few afternoons later, Zheng was in the information department when she overheard some staff chatting nearby.
Yi Shui Entertainment had a relaxed culture. As long as people weren’t busy, casual conversations were allowed and no one interfered.
A young employee said in disbelief, “I can’t believe Yu Shang did that. That was his own father. Their whole family is a mess. Thank goodness Director Yu cut ties with them in advance.”
“Are you sure it was Yu Peirong who cut ties? I thought it was Yu Litian who did it first. He threw away a daughter like her and pampered some fake son who turned out to be useless. If it were me, I’d have castrated Yu Shang already.”
“Well, hasn’t that already happened, in a way?”
Another colleague laughed so hard they almost fell out of their chair.
Zheng had already become familiar with everyone in the company, from executives to interns. Her friendly nature made her easy to talk to, and since she was still a college student, most saw her as a little sister they could speak freely around.
She pushed open the door and joined in the gossip with a grin.
“What are you all talking about?”
One of the girls held back a laugh and showed her phone.
Zheng glanced at the screen and saw the number one trending topic on Weibo, marked with an explosive red tag. Her expression changed.
The top headline was Yu Litian’s prison escape. The next one was about Yu Litian and Yu Shang.
At first, Zheng had thought something happened inside the prison. But it turned out Yu Litian had bribed guards and broken out. He also arranged to have Yu Shang taken with him.
Yu Shang had been the reason he landed in prison to begin with. Any lingering feelings of fatherhood had long since disappeared.
He kidnapped Yu Shang and dragged him to an abandoned factory. There, he released his pheromones to attack him. But Yu Shang had inherited a stronger pheromone profile from his unknown biological father, overpowering Yu Litian with ease.
Driven insane, Yu Litian took out a powerful drug from his pocket.
The drug was designed to heighten Alpha dominance, but its side effects were severe. Almost no one used it, especially not in personal settings.
Yu Litian was prepared to go down with Yu Shang.
His own pheromones were already high level. With the drug’s effects, he held his own in a one-on-one fight. When police arrived, the scent of pheromones was so strong that even Betas with weak sensory ability could detect it.
It was easy to imagine how violent the scene had been.
In the rescue video, a thick pool of blood was visible on the ground. The scene was horrifying.
Zheng Xiuxue checked her phone again and saw someone claiming that Yu Litian had cut out Yu Shang’s entire gland. But in the process, his own gland had been completely destroyed due to overexertion.
So in the end, the two of them ended up badly injured. No one expected the father and son to fall in such a brutal way.
Zheng Xiuxue quickly passed the information to Yu Peirong.
After watching the entire clip, Yu Peirong gave a cold laugh and said lightly, “Lu Zhiyao really is something.”
Zheng Xiuxue was confused. “Lu Zhiyao?”
“Yes. Otherwise, how do you think Yu Litian, barely surviving like an old stray dog, managed to bribe the prison guards, sneak out, and even take Yu Shang with him?”
In the original novel, Lu Zhiyao was the biggest antagonist. She was ruthless, greedy, and lustful, but always decisive and efficient. She was far more dangerous than even the original blackened protagonist.
Anyone she no longer found useful would be discarded like trash. Her family ran underground casinos and was extremely wealthy. Crushing a collapsing Yu family would be nothing to her.
Yu Litian’s company had long appeared solid on the surface, but in truth, it had been hollowed out and was falling apart.
Real estate had been booming, but competition was fierce. The Yu family was no longer invincible. Yu Litian had spent years playing dirty instead of focusing on legitimate business. Many core shareholders had already jumped ship.
In the novel, the company nearly collapsed, but Yu Shang saved it. However, he did it by forcing Omegas to drink with clients and leveraging those shady connections to prop up the company.
This kind of behavior would always come back to bite.
Yu Shang, once arrogant and untouchable in the story, now experienced the excruciating pain of losing his gland. When Yu Litian’s knife pierced the back of his neck, the agony was so sharp it cut through every nerve in his body.
He felt like he was on fire. His nerves burned, snapped, and screamed.
When he was finally rescued and stabilized, Yu Shang confessed to all his crimes. He admitted to arranging the attack on Xu Xiaoqi and framing other artists, especially Omegas. Some had fallen into depression after being forced to accompany clients. Others were dismissed entirely.
Because several Omega artists came forward and reported him by name, and because his involvement in drug trafficking had been confirmed with evidence, Yu Shang was sentenced to death by lethal injection, to be carried out in six months.
That six-month delay gave him life, but for someone with a destroyed gland, every day was a living hell.
Back when he had allowed his men to torment other Omegas, to hurt Xu Xiaoqi just to get at Yu Peirong, Yu Shang probably never imagined he would suffer even more one day.
His gland damage was worse than what Xu Xiaoqi had endured. There was no chance of recovery. The knife used on him had been soaked in a corrosive agent. Every night, even lying on the hard bed of his prison cell, his back and neck throbbed as if burning.
His gland often became inflamed. The pain and swelling were unbearable. Even the slightest bacterial infection could turn deadly. He spent his nights writhing in pain.
Within just a few days, he was no longer recognizable. And with stricter guards now overseeing him, he had no chance to take his own life either.
After her full recovery, Xu Xiaoqi no longer had much personal contact with Yu Peirong. But she did invite Yu Peirong, Qi Xiyao, and Ye An out for a meal. At the end, she stood and bowed deeply to express her gratitude.
Yu Peirong quickly stopped her. “You don’t need to. I only did what anyone should have.”
Xu Xiaoqi did not stop. Once she straightened up, she looked toward Qi Xiyao with a hopeful smile.
“Miss Qi, are you about to join the filming team? Is it Director Zhang’s project?”
Company news often spread quietly among staff and rarely reached outsiders, but Xu Xiaoqi had been in the industry. Her sources were definitely more reliable.
“If you don’t mind, could you ask Director Zhang if I might write the theme song?”
Xu Xiaoqi’s music had always been well-received in film and television. She had once written an OST that became extremely popular, even though it was only background music. After her new album released, many had tried to work with her, but before anything was finalized, everything fell apart.
She said she had thought about it for a long time. She still wanted to work in music, but only behind the scenes. For now, she didn’t want to be in the spotlight again.
The fear still lingered. She hadn’t fully healed from the trauma and gossip. So for this new song, she didn’t plan to sing it herself. But she could write, compose, and arrange it, essentially acting as the producer.
Qi Xiyao admired her unique musical style and agreed right away.
Xu Xiaoqi gave a soft smile and thanked her sincerely for the opportunity.
The atmosphere at the table was warm and pleasant. Yu Peirong was especially cheerful. After all, she had finally resolved a major issue that had weighed heavily on her for a long time. The storyline had already shifted dramatically. There was no longer any possibility of her being the tragic character whose gland would be taken by the so-called leads.
Later, there would probably be trouble in managing Yu Litian’s company.
But Yu Peirong had already completed all the formal paperwork back when Yu Litian unilaterally announced he was severing ties with her. The legal process was nearly finished. As long as infidelity could be proven, she would officially be able to cut all ties with him.
Yu Litian was still lying in the intensive care unit, unconscious. He could die at any moment. But it had nothing to do with her. Let the dogs tear each other apart. The mess they left behind could be someone else’s problem.
Yu Peirong took a sip of wine. A slight heat spread across her lips and tongue.
Her alcohol tolerance was decent, but she hadn’t expected the wine she casually ordered today to be so strong. It went down sweet and smooth, but the aftereffects were powerful. She was already a little tipsy.
Ye An, who had also drunk quite a bit, suggested they play a dice game. Yu Peirong nodded absentmindedly but stepped out to take a phone call.
She stood on the balcony as the soft spring breeze from the river brushed against her face. The warmth of the alcohol made her fair cheeks slightly flushed.
The call was from her secretary. The man greeted her respectfully, calling her Director Yu before getting to the point.
“About the reward from the director of The Wanderer last time. He mentioned a contract for a variety show. Well, the new show has been announced. It’s already topping the pre-booking charts.”
Yu Peirong paused, then smiled. “That sounds great. Yaoyao needs a bit more heat right now.”
The secretary sounded a little hesitant.
“It is great in terms of popularity. But the problem is that it’s a romance reality show with very bold content.”
