- Chapter 57.1 - Meeting the Parents
Yu Peirong chatted with Ye An for a long time before heading home.
The exhaustion from the past few days caught up with her, and the moment she lay down on the bed, she fell asleep. It wasn’t until nightfall that she woke up, planning to take a bath. The bathroom was filled with bubbles. Yu Peirong sat on the edge of the tub, testing the water temperature, unaware that someone had entered the apartment.
She only noticed when footsteps drew closer. Lifting her eyes, she saw Qi Xiyao’s figure outside the bathroom door. The woman gently pushed the door open. Warm steam swirled around her, blurring most of the view.
“You’re back?”
Yu Peirong had been ready to step into the tub, but when she saw Qi Xiyao, she stood up immediately. A loose white robe hung from her shoulders, revealing a black camisole underneath. The camisole fit snugly against her body, outlining her graceful figure.
Qi Xiyao had been very busy lately, and it was rare for her to return home. Seeing Yu Peirong now, she smiled gently.
The scent of gardenia, an Alpha’s pheromone, lingered in the air. It was subtle but deeply alluring. Ever since she had been marked, Qi Xiyao had become more sensitive to Yu Peirong’s scent. Even the faint trace from a bath was enough to catch her attention.
She took a deep breath, enjoying the soothing pleasure the Alpha’s pheromones brought her.
“I had a few things to do today, but I wanted to come see you,” she said, stepping further into the bathroom.
Snow was falling heavily outside. It was deep winter, but the room felt especially warm. Yu Peirong took Qi Xiyao’s hand and helped her out of her coat. Then she pulled her into the warm tub.
Yu Peirong’s tongue gently parted Qi Xiyao’s lips. The overwhelming pheromones caused the Omega to tilt her pale neck slightly.
Her skin was fair, not sickly pale, and her slender neck was smooth without visible veins, like pure milk in a glass. Yu Peirong turned her head and gently bit her collarbone, leaving a small red mark.
The bath lasted a long time. By the time Qi Xiyao got out, she was completely drained but deeply satisfied.
After she left, Yu Peirong stayed behind to wash up a bit more. The heater was on, so she came out wrapped only in a towel.
The towel just barely covered her hips. Her long legs extended underneath. She sat lazily on the bed and took out a nail clipper from the nightstand to trim her nails.
“My parents…”
“That girl who shouted during our last phone call, is her name Zou Yue?” Qi Xiyao started to speak, but Yu Peirong interrupted her, surprising her with the sudden question.
“She works for Lu Zhiyao.”
Qi Xiyao’s eyebrows twitched slightly. Then, as if something clicked in her mind, her expression changed to surprise and confusion.
“You… you remember everything now?”
Qi Xiyao blushed deeply. She remembered how she used to joke about being married to Yu Peirong, thinking it was harmless fun. But Yu Peirong had taken it seriously.
And they both had enjoyed the act more than expected.
Yu Peirong put down the nail clipper, stood up, walked to Qi Xiyao, and wrapped her arms around her waist. Her warm breath brushed against Qi Xiyao’s sensitive earlobe.
Qi Xiyao shivered and held onto Yu Peirong’s shoulders to keep her balance.
“I just remembered recently. I was going to keep pretending a little longer,” Yu Peirong whispered softly near her ear. The Omega’s fair ear had a small pink gland at the base.
She gave it a gentle lick and quickly pulled back. Qi Xiyao blushed furiously, but pretended to stay calm.
“But since I’ve already marked my wife, wouldn’t it be strange not to get our marriage certificate soon?”
Qi Xiyao’s face turned bright red. Her eyes darted away, then back again.
“But why would someone like Lu Zhiyao do this?”
Yu Peirong recalled what she had heard from Ye An and her expression turned serious. She shared everything she had learned, including how Lu Zhiyao had treated the original version of herself.
The two had known each other since childhood. Lu Zhiyao never truly liked her, but her possessiveness had grown to a frightening level.
Even Ye An, while retelling the past, trembled slightly. Unless someone had lived through it, they could never imagine how horrifying it was to wake up in a strange bed surrounded by people doing those things.
“She’s completely insane.”
Qi Xiyao frowned. She remembered how that woman had suddenly lashed out at her without reason. There hadn’t been any real conflict before, so someone else had to be pulling the strings. And now it made sense. That person was Lu Zhiyao.
The thought that Lu Zhiyao wanted the three of them to coexist made Qi Xiyao feel nauseated.
“At least now everything is out in the open. That’s something,” Yu Peirong said calmly.
She had already processed the emotional weight of what Ye An had told her. Seeing that Qi Xiyao still looked unsettled, she quickly changed the subject. She didn’t want their rare time together to be dark and heavy.
“When did you tell your parents you had a girlfriend?”
Yu Peirong remembered from the original novel that Qi Xiyao only ever shared good news with her family. Her parents didn’t know about the past trauma. If they had, they would probably have been devastated.
Without that barrier, it was easier for the two of them to come out to their families now.
Even now, Yu Peirong felt it was surreal. She had traveled to another world and somehow ended up dating the female lead. Meanwhile, the male lead had vanished without a trace.
“Yu Peirong.”
Qi Xiyao suddenly called her full name. Yu Peirong looked up, only to have her hand gently grasped.
“Promise me something. No matter how my parents react to us, stay with me. Don’t overthink it. Don’t feel pressured.”
Qi Xiyao’s eyes sparkled. Yu Peirong paused, then suddenly understood.
Qi Xiyao’s mother had been through a traumatic experience. It was likely that she had a strong aversion to Alphas, which might make her unwilling to accept her daughter being with one.
Yu Peirong had studied psychology for acting. She knew that this kind of emotional resistance was common but hard to change.
Words wouldn’t help much. What mattered was consistent action and patience. Over time, she could prove her intentions and let her actions change their impression.
Still, Yu Peirong believed that Qi Xiyao’s mother must be a reasonable person. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have raised a daughter like Qi Xiyao.
Smiling warmly, Yu Peirong brushed the hair from Qi Xiyao’s cheek and tucked it gently behind her ear.
“I’ll do whatever you say.”
The busy end-of-year period passed in a blur. Soon, New Year’s Eve arrived. The two of them didn’t see each other often during this time, but it didn’t affect their relationship.
Whenever she had a free moment, Yu Peirong would call Qi Xiyao. Most of the time, Qi Xiyao was busy on various film sets. She hadn’t felt this productive in a long time.
In the past, she might have had nothing to do until after the new year.
But Qi Xiyao wasn’t the type to chase fame without putting in the work. She valued real opportunities, whether it was a new role or a commercial deal.
In the novel, her success was not solely due to connections. While networking helped, she earned those opportunities with her own effort.
Photographers from her previous shoots had asked to work with her again. They were surprised by her talent and presence. She was nothing like the rumors.
One of the magazines she shot for was especially popular. Although digital media had reduced magazine sales in recent years, that particular publication remained respected and had a loyal readership. Her cover boosted its sales, and many new fans were drawn in by her beauty.
As her reputation grew, more and more opportunities came her way. She no longer needed Yu Peirong to set things up for her.
Yu Peirong had even started reading scripts to help Qi Xiyao choose her next project.
On the 29th day of the lunar calendar, the weather was clear and sunny. Yu Peirong went out to shop for gifts. She planned to bring them to Qi Xiyao’s parents, hoping to make a good impression.
But before she could leave, she received a phone call from her father, or rather, the father of the body she now occupied.
Yu Litian had caused trouble at the hospital and had declared that he was cutting ties with Yu Peirong when he was discharged. He clearly wanted to make a dramatic exit.
During the call, he spoke with sarcasm and disdain, but there was an underlying hint that he wanted her to come visit.
He had lived a self-indulgent life. Now that he was weak and alone, he remembered he had a daughter who could keep him company for the holidays. More likely, he wanted to question and control her again.
Yu Peirong responded sharply, leaving him speechless before hanging up.
In this world, people still cared deeply about the New Year, just like in her old hometown.
Now, Yu Litian only had a caregiver. The housekeeper had quit, and he hadn’t hired a new one. He was bitter and full of resentment. His old friends had stopped visiting too.
To all this, Yu Peirong had only one response.
He deserved it.
The old man was even more troublesome than Yu Shang. Yu Peirong didn’t plan to waste her time dealing with him during the holidays. But if he kept making noise, she wouldn’t ignore him either.
She casually fed some information to a random media account, and sure enough, a few curious reporters caught the scent. Even during the Lunar New Year, they went to squat outside Yu Litian’s house, trying to dig up old gossip about his messy relationship with his ex-wife and stories about the Yu Corporation.
Yu Litian flew into a rage. These were exactly the kinds of things he hated being reminded of. Furious, he had the reporter kicked out of his home and even ordered his bodyguards to smash the journalist’s camera.
Unfortunately for him, that reporter was not someone easily bullied. He had once been a paparazzo and had done all kinds of dangerous, underhanded work in the past. There was no way he would just give up because Yu Litian ruined his scoop.
No one knows exactly how, but he managed to sneak into Yu Litian’s home, avoiding the security cameras completely. He even overheard some sensitive financial conversations related to the company. The very next day, he spread the word.
Just as Yu Litian had feared, his holiday became anything but peaceful. It was filled with chaos and scandal.
Yu Peirong watched from afar, thoroughly enjoying the drama.
On Lunar New Year’s Eve, both she and Qi Xiyao had taken care of all their matters. Together, they drove to visit Qi Xiyao’s family.
Qi Xiyao’s family lived in a different city. It was not far away, but definitely less bustling than where they were. As they approached, the holiday spirit in the air grew stronger. By nightfall, the streets were glowing with lanterns and decorations. Fireworks exploded across the sky in bursts of color.
In the country Yu Peirong came from, fireworks were banned in almost every major city. The last time she had seen or heard firecrackers was when she was very young.
She remembered it clearly. Her father had taken her out to play. She had been a timid child but always eager to try new things. That night, a boy from the neighborhood lit a firecracker that shot into the air and startled her. She hid behind her father, holding back tears out of pride, her eyes wide and lips trembling.
She shared this story in a joking tone while watching two young children play and chase each other at an intersection.
It was the first time Qi Xiyao had ever heard a personal childhood story from her. Not a memory from the original body, but truly from Yu Peirong herself.
Qi Xiyao had never asked where she came from, and perhaps it was not something that could be explained. She did not care where Yu Peirong came from. Some truths, spoken or not, simply did not matter.
When they parked the car, Yu Peirong went to the trunk to collect their bags. Qi Xiyao stayed in front, using a wet wipe to clean some dust off the car seat.
A group of children ran past, laughing and playing. One little girl, about three or four years old, tripped and fell. Her cheerful face crumpled into sobs. Another girl quickly helped her up.
The older girl looked worried and scolded her gently. But when the younger one pouted in distress, she softened. Thinking no one was watching, she leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
Qi Xiyao smiled quietly and turned her gaze away before the children noticed.
“What are you thinking about?” Yu Peirong asked softly.
Snow was starting to fall again. The sky looked heavy and gray. The wind was sharp and cold. Yu Peirong reached out to brush away the water droplets that had fallen into Qi Xiyao’s hair. The moisture carried a faint scent of pine and melted quickly at her fingertips.
Qi Xiyao stared at the children disappearing into the distance. Then a smile slowly formed on her lips.
“When everything settles down, let’s have a child too,” she said gently.
Yu Peirong blinked, thinking she had misheard. “What?”
Qi Xiyao smiled and slipped her hand through Yu Peirong’s arm. “Nothing. Let’s go inside.”
When they arrived, Qi Xiyao’s parents were cooking. The kitchen was filled with the rich scent of home-cooked food.
Most of the housework was done by her father because her mother was not in great health. Before the visit, her mother had asked in detail about her daughter’s girlfriend’s favorite dishes. Nearly half the table was filled with Yu Peirong’s favorites.
As soon as they entered, the sweet aroma of sweet and sour pork greeted them. Yu Peirong’s heart softened. She instinctively tightened her grip on Qi Xiyao’s hand.
She was nervous, and understandably so. It was her first time meeting her girlfriend’s family. In moments like this, she showed a rare, softer side of herself.
When Qi Xiyao’s father brought a dish out and saw Yu Peirong, he froze. After a second of surprise and delight, he called out to his wife.
“Xiufen!”
Zhuang Xiufen was Qi Xiyao’s mother.
She quickly came out from the bedroom. Her reaction was nearly identical to her husband’s when her eyes landed on Yu Peirong.
Of course, she had seen Yu Peirong before. She knew the two girls were close. They had appeared together many times, and Yu Peirong had helped Qi Xiyao tremendously in her career.
But she had also heard that Yu Peirong had differentiated into an Alpha.
After what Zhuang Xiufen had experienced, her husband Qi Bin had never marked her again, afraid it might trigger traumatic memories.
Still, the pairing of an Alpha and an Omega was unmistakable. Qi Xiyao was wearing a scent-suppressing patch, but her parents could easily recognize the new fragrance on her.
Qi Xiyao’s natural scent of citrus tea now carried a faint trace of gardenia. It was subtle but distinct. The floral note did not stand out sharply, but they could both tell it was the mark of an Alpha.
Zhuang Xiufen’s smile froze for a brief moment. Her expression shifted as she looked at Yu Peirong, her eyes filled with complicated emotions.
Before she could say anything, Qi Bin stepped forward and gently patted his daughter’s shoulder.
“Why don’t you take your girlfriend to your room to drop off your things? Then come out for dinner once you’ve had a rest.”
Yu Peirong smiled sweetly and looked up. “Uncle, Auntie, my name is Yu Peirong. You can just call me Xiaorong.”
She had a striking face, but her smile was gentle and warm. There was nothing aggressive about her, nothing that gave off the typical Alpha aura.
Qi Bin lightly tugged on Zhuang Xiufen’s hand, signaling her not to ruin their daughter’s good mood.
Zhuang Xiufen bit her lip slightly, holding back whatever she had been about to say.
In Qi Xiyao’s room, the two girls quickly unpacked. They were not staying long, maybe two or three days at most. They would probably leave after the second day of the new year. So they had only brought a few changes of clothes.
As Yu Peirong sorted through her luggage, Qi Xiyao helped her while leaning closer and whispering softly.
“Rong-jie?”
Her bright, doe-like eyes curved into a smile. Her gaze sparkled, full of warmth and mischief. She didn’t need to say anything more. Yu Peirong already knew what she meant.
She raised a finger to Qi Xiyao’s lips.
“It’s alright.”
She completely understood how her mother felt. If she were in her shoes, she would be just as cautious about her daughter’s partner.
Especially if, someday, she and Qi Xiyao had a child together. If that child were an Omega, she would definitely be wary of any Alpha trying to get close. It would be instinctive to protect her child from harm.
There was a natural imbalance between Alphas and Omegas. After being marked, an Alpha could still mark someone else. But an Omega could only be marked by one Alpha over the long term.
If an Omega wanted to break up after being marked, the emotional and physical toll would be much greater. Some selfish Alphas deliberately marked their partners early to prevent them from leaving, turning them into something more like possessions.
Yu Peirong looked at Qi Xiyao with even more tenderness in her eyes.
Before dinner, Qi Bin had said something to Zhuang Xiufen that seemed to calm her previous tension. The subtle hostility she had shown toward Yu Peirong finally faded. With a calm and courteous demeanor, she invited Yu Peirong to sit down and join them for the New Year’s Eve dinner.
The dinner was lavish. By the time everyone had gathered, the television was already tuned to the national Spring Festival Gala.
With music and performances playing in the background, Yu Peirong raised her glass and offered a toast to Qi Xiyao’s parents, using a mild rum instead of something stronger.
There was no strict rule in their household about staying silent at the table, though the conversation was still relatively reserved. They spoke about everyday life, and Yu Peirong handled everything with grace and ease.
She had always believed she was generally likable to people of their generation. Back when she was filming, many of the older actors had taken a liking to her and treated her kindly.
