- Chapter 56 - Admitting Mistakes
Ye An’s heart clenched sharply. Her hands trembled, nearly dropping everything she was holding, and her eyes filled with uncontrollable fear as she looked at Yu Peirong.
Her lips quivered, her breathing almost stopped. She stared intently at the woman sitting across from her, expressionless.
Yu Peirong had her hands clasped together, completely unaffected by Ye An’s anxious expression. In fact, her gaze only grew colder, sharper, like a blade slicing straight through Ye An’s emotional defenses.
After a long silence, Ye An finally lowered her head. She fidgeted with the hem of her clothes and whispered in a pitiful voice, so soft it was barely audible.
“He’s my father, after all…”
“Father?”
Yu Peirong scoffed. Hearing that word come out of Ye An’s mouth only struck her as ironic. She had no intention of offering the same patience she gave Qi Xiyao. Her voice was laced with sarcasm.
“You really think he sees you as his daughter?”
“I know he probably doesn’t now…”
Ye An’s gaze turned pained, but she still tried to defend him. She opened her mouth as if to argue, but before she could speak, Yu Peirong threw a file folder in front of her.
Ye An picked it up, flipping through it quickly. Her face drained of all color.
She looked up in shock, as if trying to find a hint of denial or forgiveness on Yu Peirong’s face, but all she saw was cold indifference.
Yu Peirong was not someone easily moved by sympathy. Maybe once she had pitied Ye An for her past, but the moment Ye An had gone behind her back and secretly shared information with Yu Litian, undermining her interests, all that compassion was gone.
Ye An’s expression grew increasingly ashen, like soot smeared across her face. A moment later, she broke into a violent coughing fit.
The coughs were deep and ragged, like she was trying to expel years of pent-up bitterness and pain. Her initial nervousness began to morph into anger and confusion.
Yu Peirong just watched her coldly, her gaze silently saying, “You brought this on yourself.”
What she’d handed over wasn’t much—just Yu Shang’s birth certificate and an old family photo. Ye An may not have been the brightest, but she wasn’t a fool. She could put two and two together.
Her mother had been gravely ill in bed while Yu Litian, all smiles, had gone off to take family portraits with his mistress.
He had done everything possible for Yu Shang not because Yu Shang was particularly talented, but because he had once believed he was his biological son.
In their world, the A/O dynamic didn’t carry the same weight as gender bias. Both were Alphas. Yu Litian’s favoritism was rooted in his affection for Yu Shang’s mother his mistress and his resentment toward Ye An’s mother.
Ye An’s hands began trembling violently.
“Your mother was an only child. Her parents died young, and she built everything she had on her own before marrying your father,” Yu Peirong said, her voice calm but cutting. “In the end, she passed away from illness.”
She paused for a beat, letting her words sink in before continuing.
“Did you ever wonder why your father was always so cold to you? So distant? Why he forced Yu Shang into your company?”
There’s a term for people like that: ‘widow exploiters.’ Because the woman had no family left to protect her, Yu Litian had taken advantage of her and the inheritance she brought into the marriage. The fact that her health was failing only made her more convenient, an easier target.
She had likely been deceived by sweet words, believing he loved her. She spent the last of her life’s energy giving birth to Ye An, thinking she’d left behind something meaningful.
But fate had played a cruel trick on her. How could she have known the man who once whispered love in her ear would later treat her child like this?
Ye An’s eyes filled with tears. Her hands balled into fists.
To be honest, Yu Peirong no longer felt much sympathy for her. All she wanted now was a clear answer.
“I didn’t talk to him that much…” Ye An choked out. She remembered why they were there and quickly took out her phone, handing it to Yu Peirong to show their chat history.
Ye An had still held onto hope, even after everything. After surviving death, she saw Yu Litian as her only remaining family. No matter how cold or cruel he had been in the past, she had grown up under his roof. Letting go wasn’t easy.
She hated Yu Shang bitterly. So, she had anonymously messaged Yu Litian, trying to stir him into taking action and bringing Yu Shang down.
She believed he had the power to make Yu Shang pay. If she could see him ruined and punished, she would finally feel some justice.
But Yu Litian wasn’t stupid. He had quickly suspected something and began asking questions that led him to believe Ye An might be in contact with Yu Peirong. He didn’t get much out of her, but he did confirm one crucial detail: that Yu Peirong and Qi Xiyao were close.
In his eyes, that relationship seemed out of character. He couldn’t believe the two would actually be together.
Yu Peirong finished reading the messages and saw they matched Ye An’s explanation. She exhaled quietly, her gaze softening slightly.
What she feared most during her memory loss was that Ye An had revealed sensitive information like Qi Xiyao’s schedule or connections which could lead to someone bribing insiders. That would’ve been catastrophic.
But since it was only a confirmation of their relationship, it was manageable.
Even so, she didn’t let Ye An off the hook completely.
“This time, I’ll let it go,” she said firmly. “But if anything like this happens again, don’t expect me to be so forgiving.”
Ye An, hoarse from crying, nodded quickly. She felt overwhelmed with guilt, especially now that Yu Peirong wasn’t continuing to scold her.
The conversation was essentially over. Yu Peirong stood to leave, but just then, she heard Ye An speak again in a low, raspy voice.
“By the way, have you seen Lu Zhiyao recently?”
Yu Peirong paused mid-step and slowly sat back down.
She looked at Ye An, who didn’t hesitate. In a calm voice, she began to explain everything that had happened between her and Lu Zhiyao.
Lu Zhiyao and the original Yu Peirong had grown up together. Childhood friends, the two had once been inseparable. While modern law didn’t allow betrothals between minors, their families had made a verbal promise, a future engagement between the two.
Naturally, the one who made the verbal engagement agreement had been Yu Litian. Whether someone whispered in his ear to push the idea, no one knew.
In short, after setting up an informal engagement between the two families, Yu Litian had set his sights on clinging to the powerful Lu family. As Lu Zhiyao grew older, she became someone who didn’t care about A/O distinctions or gender. Even after the original Yu Peirong differentiated into an Alpha, Lu Zhiyao didn’t mind at all—on the contrary, she found it exciting.
However, the original Yu Peirong had always supported traditional A/O relationships. She had never developed romantic feelings for Lu Zhiyao and had even gently tried to make that clear. But Lu Zhiyao pretended not to understand.
Yu Peirong had thought that rejecting her would be the end of the matter. She never expected that Lu Zhiyao was, in truth, a full-blown lunatic.
Lu Zhiyao often hosted private parties at her villa, inviting both Omegas and Alphas. Everyone knew what really went on at those parties decadence beyond words.
Once, she even tried to get Yu Peirong drunk in an attempt to sleep with her.
Fortunately, Yu Peirong held her liquor well and woke up just in time. When she opened her eyes, she saw two Alpha-Omega pairs tangled up on the sofa next to her, mid-act.
She was utterly horrified. She shoved away Lu Zhiyao, who had been sitting beside her undoing her clothes, and ran out of the villa in a panic.
From that day forward, Lu Zhiyao became like a ghost haunting, persistent, always lingering nearby.
To say Lu Zhiyao actually liked her would be a stretch. What she had was a twisted, obsessive need to possess people. She wanted everyone around her bound to her, unable to leave.
Though she wasn’t officially in the entertainment industry, she had her hands in plenty of it, collecting beauties like trophies of all kinds and types. For many of them, getting close to Lu Zhiyao meant gaining a powerful backer. As for whether they had to sell their bodies, that was up to them.
Lu Zhiyao herself was attractive. Plenty of people lined up to get close to her. But that only made the ones she couldn’t have all the more irresistible.
Like that one trainee, or the actress who recently argued with Qi Xiyao, they were all part of Lu Zhiyao’s so-called “harem.”
The original Yu Peirong had no idea where Lu Zhiyao found the energy, but the fact remained, Lu Zhiyao’s family background was extremely powerful. Taking her down wouldn’t be as simple as dealing with Yu Shang.
If it were that easy, then in the original plot, the male lead Yu Shang wouldn’t have been pushed to the brink of collapse by her, his company nearly bankrupt.
How Yu Shang managed to bring Lu Zhiyao down was never explained in the novel. Maybe it was just his protagonist halo at work.
Yu Peirong had a splitting headache.
After that meeting, she realized Lu Zhiyao didn’t have good intentions toward either her or Qi Xiyao. This woman clearly wanted to claim every attractive Alpha and Omega for herself.
But the most troubling part was the possibility Yu Peirong had just thought of one she didn’t like at all.
Lu Zhiyao knew Yu Litian. That meant she also knew Yu Shang. And in the original story, Lu Zhiyao was far more deranged than the male lead himself. She was the uncontested number-one lunatic.
What if the attack on Xu Xiaoqi had actually been carried out on Yu Shang’s orders—but executed by Lu Zhiyao?
That certainly seemed like something Lu Zhiyao would do.
Regardless of whether she was involved in that specific incident or not, as long as Lu Zhiyao remained free, many people were at risk. And given her family’s power, rooting her out completely would be incredibly difficult.
After Yu Peirong laid out her thoughts, Ye An’s face shifted slightly. She leaned in close and whispered something into Yu Peirong’s ear.
Yu Peirong frowned. “You…”
Ye An replied in a low, steady voice, “I caused this mess. There are things you might not be able to do but I might have a chance.”
No matter what, Lu Zhiyao’s continued presence was a threat. Ye An had already nearly lost Xu Xiaoqi once, she could not allow this predator to stretch her claws toward the one person who had just stepped into the light from the shadows.
