- Chapter 39 - Going Home
Yu Peirong felt like her whole body was on fire.
It was the first time anyone had asked her such a question in public. Embarrassment mixed with a bit of nervousness. Even though she knew Qi Xiyao was only teasing, the intense stares from those around them made all her occasional little fantasies quietly dissolve.
She had always been someone with a vivid imagination but little courage to act. When it came to situations like this, she could not manage to say a single word.
Qi Xiyao’s bright eyes tilted toward her, teasing and playful.
“Rong-jie, why aren’t you saying anything? Why are you blushing?”
Qi Xiyao had noticed that whenever Yu Peirong spoke to her, her earlobes would flush red and she would look flustered. Even during normal conversations, this sometimes happened.
She had paid close attention and realized that Yu Peirong never acted this way with others. Only when talking to her did she show that kind of special reaction.
With a soft, coaxing tone, Qi Xiyao continued to laugh and joke with her. An Xiaomachi, who had been watching from the side, was already stunned. She cried out, half-jokingly, asking if the two of them were hiding something from her.
Only after snapping out of it did Yu Peirong reach out and lift Qi Xiyao’s chin, gently rubbing her thumb along her smooth jaw. Her heart was pounding like a drum.
“Stop it.”
Her voice was soft, and she could feel the warmth rising uncontrollably to her cheeks. She had to look away, avoiding Qi Xiyao’s gaze.
But Qi Xiyao just smiled, winked at An Xiaomachi, and pulled Yu Peirong aside. Her expression turned serious.
“I’m not joking. My scenes should wrap in two or three days. Wait for me, and I’ll go home with you.”
“You’re coming home with me?”
Yu Peirong instinctively wanted to say no, but Qi Xiyao grabbed her wrist. Her eyes were clear and firm, with none of the weakness others had tried to pin on her.
“Some things can’t be brought out into the open, but running away forever isn’t a solution either. No matter what, I want to face his family and make my position clear. If Mr. Yu still insists that his son did nothing wrong and refuses to restrain him, then I will choose to file a lawsuit.”
Qi Xiyao had once been truly grateful when Yu Shang helped find a hospital room for her parents after their accident. But she was never the type to take advantage of others. In fact, she had been financially strained for years precisely because of how much she supported her family.
Although Yu Shang had connected her with the doctors and arranged the room, Qi Xiyao had paid all the follow-up medical expenses to the housekeeper, down to the last cent. She owed him nothing.
She had once endured being called to his office to pour tea and run errands, because at the time it wasn’t over the line, and she still remembered his one act of kindness during her hardest time.
But in reality, the debt had long been repaid. There was never any promise of “offering herself in return” as he seemed to believe.
The more he crossed the line, the more he endangered her safety. Qi Xiyao was not someone who would let herself be pushed around. She would fight back.
Especially now, when he acted so arrogantly and unrestrained, who knew what he might do next? She had to act before anything worse happened. It was time to send a clear warning to his family.
“And besides,” Qi Xiyao added with a smile, “I’m technically your girlfriend now. Meeting the parents might be a little early, but eventually we’d have to do it anyway, right?”
Her last sentence was lighthearted, and she looked at Yu Peirong with a gentle, teasing smile.
Ever since that dramatic night at Yu Shang’s house, their relationship had taken a leap forward. They had shared a sense of hardship and survival, and Qi Xiyao had started joking more often. At first, Yu Peirong had felt a bit overwhelmed by the change, but under Qi Xiyao’s soft persistence, she gradually gave in. After thinking it over, she agreed to her proposal.
Three days later, filming for Twin Lives wrapped up. After the celebration banquet, everyone returned home to rest. Yu Peirong openly brought Qi Xiyao back to what was supposed to be their family home.
She still had a private residence in that house. It was a spacious villa where both she and Yu Shang had entire floors to themselves. The private areas were comfortable enough that staying for a short period wouldn’t be too difficult.
When they arrived, Yu Litian had ordered the housekeeper to prepare a full table of delicious dishes, acting like a loving father who doted on his daughter. It was as if there had never been any conflict between them.
He even opened a bottle of vintage wine from his private collection. Worried that Yu Peirong might get drunk, he suggested she drink water instead. He and Yu Shang drank together, the two men toasting and chatting.
Although Yu Peirong wasn’t exactly immune to alcohol, her tolerance was decent. Still, she had no intention of letting her guard down in this place. She politely declined and helped shield Qi Xiyao from drinking as well.
When Qi Xiyao appeared in front of Yu Shang, his gaze immediately locked on her. This time, however, it wasn’t just admiration. There was a sharper edge to it, filled with suspicion and scrutiny.
If looks could kill, Yu Peirong figured she would have been stabbed to death several times over. But the more a man like him was given attention, the harder it was to get rid of him. She deliberately ignored him, which seemed to make him tone it down slightly.
Noticing the growing tension between the two, Yu Litian seemed to remember why he had called Yu Peirong home in the first place. He took advantage of the drinking and casual conversation to lecture her gently, trying to convince her not to let outsiders come between her and her brother.
Unfortunately, Yu Peirong was not someone easily swayed by words. If Yu Shang was a hypocrite in training, then Yu Litian was a seasoned villain in disguise.
His affair during marriage, which resulted in Yu Shang’s birth, was just the beginning. Afterward, he blatantly favored the son of his mistress. If not for Yu Litian’s direct support and grooming, Yu Shang would never have turned out as arrogant and ruthless as he was now.
Even after Yu Shang had lost his position as heir to Yishui Entertainment, he still acted like he was untouchable. First, he believed the company couldn’t function without him. Many of its projects had been planned by him, and he held strong personal connections.
Second, and more importantly, Yu Litian had always shielded him, providing backup plans and alternative paths. Even if Yu Peirong refused to give him anything, he still had his own safety net.
This kind of protection was different from how Yu Litian had treated the original Yu Peirong. He would go out of his way to clean up Yu Shang’s messes and even offer him better resources.
“Rongrong,” Yu Litian finally dropped the act after a few rounds of polite chatter. Compared to pretending to care about her well-being, something else clearly held his attention now. He called her by her childhood nickname and tried to appear close and fatherly.
“I remember that Yu Shang was planning a girl group project at Yishui, right? Since he’s no longer handling it, who are you planning to put in charge now?”
Looking at the man sitting across from her, whose features somewhat resembled her own and could still be considered handsome, Yu Peirong curved her lips into a slight smile.
She had long known he came with ill intentions and had no expectations whatsoever for this so-called father. The project Yu Litian brought up had originally been planned entirely by Yu Shang, and in the original novel, it ended up being one of his many karmic disasters.
Yu Shang’s former executive position at Yishui had been appointed by Yu Litian himself. Back then, he told the original host it was because he cared for her, that he couldn’t bear to see her struggle managing the company. He said she could just stay home, collect dividends, and act as a hands-off shareholder.
Whether the original host genuinely wanted to be hands-off, Yu Peirong couldn’t say. But what she could confirm without doubt was that this father and son were both born masters of emotional manipulation, using so-called care to slowly take control of the company from her.
That kind of cold, calculated affection might have worked on the original host, who had grown up lacking love. But Yu Peirong came from a happy and loving family in her previous world. She could see through such clumsy acting and simply chose not to call it out.
Yu Litian spoke with carefully crafted guilt, claiming he had been thoughtless in the past, and that his anger had caused the rift between them.
Now, he was trying to reconcile. Yu Peirong, naturally playing along, gracefully accepted the role he cast her in. With a look of emotion in her eyes, she gently shared her plans for the company.
“I’ve already handed the project to the department’s lead planner. Yaoyao just finished filming and has a gap in her schedule, so I don’t intend to let the main planner take it on alone.”
The implication was clear. She planned to take over the company’s core operations herself. Her composed demeanor sent a jolt through both Yu Litian and Yu Shang. Especially Yu Litian, whose thoughts ran deeper than his son’s. After a brief pause, he forced a kind smile onto his face.
A moment later, realizing that Yu Peirong had become far more guarded and harder to manipulate, Yu Litian shifted his attention to someone who seemed easier to handle—Qi Xiyao.
“This is your girlfriend? I think I’ve seen one of her shows before. She’s quite talented.”
“Yes,” Yu Peirong replied casually, “we’ve been dating for a while now. I figured I’d bring her home for you to meet. Aren’t you going to give us a red envelope or something?”
Previously, when Yu Shang mentioned he had his eye on an Omega, Yu Litian had immediately added a small share of company stock to his portfolio, calling it a gift to help him buy something nice for his partner.
Regardless of how he truly felt, Yu Litian could not afford to appear biased now. Otherwise, this whole performance of a father-daughter reunion would be for nothing.
He readily agreed, saying he would transfer some funds to Qi Xiyao the following day. It might not be company stock, but as the head of a major business, he would not be stingy enough to let his daughter lose face.
After securing Yu Litian’s promise of financial support, Yu Peirong walked over to him with a look of emotion. She squeezed in next to him, pushing aside the woman seated at his side, wrapped her arms around his, and said with a touch of coy affection,
“Dad, thank you for being so thoughtful.”
Yu Litian’s expression relaxed as he smiled.
“Rongrong, now that Yu Shang is at the right age to focus on building his career, maybe it’s time for you to shift your focus toward family. This might be the perfect moment to think about settling down and building a good home…”
“That sounds great.”
Before he could finish, Yu Peirong interrupted him. Since arriving in this world, it was the first time she had smiled so brightly in front of others. Her gaze seemed to unintentionally sweep past Yu Shang’s increasingly tense expression as she spoke with ease and delight.
“In that case, let Yu Shang resign and go start his own business. Then, why don’t you find a good time to organize the wedding for me and Yaoyao?”
Yu Shang, who had been listening quietly and smugly, was caught completely off guard. The wine glass in his hand slipped and shattered loudly on the floor.
