- Chapter 38 - A Deadly Question
In the video Qi Xiyao had found, there were detailed clips showing Xu Xiaoqi being tortured. Neither she nor Yu Peirong could bear to watch it through. Just a quick glance made them feel violently sick to their stomachs.
It wasn’t that the entertainment industry was uniquely dirty. The difference was that its filth was visible to the public, exposed for everyone to see and turned into gossip over meals and coffee.
Some people said the entertainment world was just a toy for the business world. Others claimed Omega celebrities looked glamorous on the surface but were secretly just selling themselves. The nasty rumors never stopped.
After Xu Xiaoqi’s case was exposed, what truly drove her to a mental breakdown was not the incident itself but the harsh judgment from internet users.
Many of them pretended to be fair and neutral, but because of jealousy and resentment, they attacked her relentlessly. Even when there were doubts or gaps in the story, those were carefully erased. All kinds of cruel and humiliating comments filled her social media, laid bare for her to see.
Qi Xiyao later searched and found screenshots someone had taken of Xu Xiaoqi’s Weibo comments. The most liked comment was someone asking her how much she charged per night. It had tens of thousands of likes.
The second most liked comment mocked her for pretending to be innocent after allegedly sleeping around.
Being an Omega herself, Qi Xiyao felt an intense empathy for Xu Xiaoqi.
After thinking it over carefully, Yu Peirong said, “If Yu Shang is interested in anyone, it’s probably you. From what I know of him, he wouldn’t mess around with other Omegas before marking you. At the very least, he wouldn’t take it as far as attempting to mark someone else.”
Time was short. The only videos Qi Xiyao had managed to find on Yu Shang’s computer were those, but if they kept digging, they could probably uncover even more.
Now that Yu Shang had been taken into police custody, even though the charge was only attempted assault, the fact that he had released pheromones with the intent to mark an Omega could land him at least three to five years in prison.
With him gone, Yu Peirong believed she would have enough time to gather more evidence and take down his entire network. That would be ideal. In the original plot, Yu Shang had hurt many people. He was far from harmless.
After comforting Qi Xiyao for a while, Yu Peirong took a shower and soon after, she fell asleep.
Qi Xiyao slept soundly through the night. When she got up to head to the film set in the morning, she realized Yu Peirong had not slept at all. The bedside lamp had been dimmed, and she had covered the desk lamp with a cloth to make a makeshift light shade. Under the dim light, Yu Peirong was writing notes.
When Qi Xiyao was extremely tired, she often fell asleep immediately and didn’t sleep in a graceful position. Yu Peirong must have noticed but chose not to disturb her. She didn’t even go to the next room to sleep.
With her voice still raspy from sleep, Qi Xiyao asked softly, “Rong-jie?”
Yu Peirong, who was already used to working night shoots, smiled as she put down her empty bottle of iced Americano.
“I didn’t bring you breakfast. Just eat with the crew. I’ll get some rest now. My assistant will go with you to the set. If anything happens, let me know. I set my phone to give special notifications for your messages any time of day.”
While washing her face, Qi Xiyao grumbled, “You should’ve gotten a new room to sleep in last night.”
Yu Peirong laughed. “I was afraid you’d wake up in the middle of the night and get scared if you didn’t see me.”
Qi Xiyao had just gone through a traumatic experience. If she had woken up alone, she would have panicked. Yu Peirong didn’t want to leave her just to sleep more comfortably.
What she didn’t say was that when she saw Yu Shang pinning Qi Xiyao against the wall, her heart dropped.
Her biggest regret in that moment was ever agreeing to let Qi Xiyao go to Yu Shang’s house. Even though everything had turned out okay, she still felt anxious and guilty. Even if she had been 99 percent confident she could protect Qi Xiyao, there was always that 1 percent chance something could go wrong.
The sound of running water stopped. Qi Xiyao looked up and stared at her reflection in the mirror.
Then she heard Yu Peirong’s voice from outside the bathroom.
“Only call me today if it’s something important. Saying you miss me doesn’t count.”
Qi Xiyao responded in a quiet voice, almost without thinking.
“But what if I really do miss you?”
Yu Peirong, clearly exhausted, muttered sleepily, “Then it probably means we’re not really dating. Real couples don’t act so clingy.”
Qi Xiyao was speechless. All the sweet, playful things she had wanted to say were instantly shut down.
She quietly muttered, “I hate straight women.”
**
But two days later, Yu Peirong received news that Yu Shang had been released without charges. The reason given was that the Omega had also released pheromones and hit Yu Shang during the incident, making it impossible to determine whether the encounter was consensual.
The person handling the case stammered through the explanation, but his favoritism toward Yu Shang was obvious. If Yu Peirong hadn’t been the most powerful businesswoman in Yishui, he might have just called it a setup by the Omega.
Yu Peirong had seen many twisted and unjust outcomes in the entertainment industry, but this was the first time she had seen someone come out cleaner than they went in. What made it worse was that this world’s law was very clear. If an Alpha attempted to harm an Omega, they would face severe punishment. And now Yu Shang was being declared completely innocent?
In those two days, Yu Peirong had also received constant harassment, mostly from Yu Shang’s parents.
She had already mentally severed ties with her father, though she hadn’t said so out loud. The old man kept calling using different phone numbers, ranting at her for sending his precious son to jail. It was unbearable.
She barely held back her temper while arguing with him. It seemed he had used his power to get Yu Shang out unscathed. He even scolded her for turning against her own brother over an Omega.
Once he had said what he wanted, he angrily ended the call with, “Come home when you have time.”
Not long after, Yu Peirong also received a smug message from Lu Zhiyao, clearly enjoying her frustration.
She nearly laughed out of disbelief.
To be honest, the original version of herself had not been a good person. She had done many cruel and unforgivable things later on. But before she marked Qi Xiyao, she hadn’t been completely unhinged. She had still been someone you could reason with.
Some of the blame had definitely been planted on her by Yu Shang, who wanted to fight for the family inheritance. From an outsider’s view, it seemed unnecessary. Their father clearly didn’t even like this daughter.
It wasn’t about preferring sons over daughters, since such biases no longer existed after gender differentiation. Yu Peirong figured that their father must have had a cold relationship with his first wife, and that indifference extended to their child.
She wasn’t too affected by this, but she had a strong feeling there was a much bigger scheme behind everything. If she wanted to bring Yu Shang down, she had to start by finding out why the original version of herself had been guided down such a dark path.
Since Qi Xiyao’s filming had been going smoothly during this time, Yu Peirong finally felt she could relax a bit. She decided to return home and take a closer look at things.
Yu Shang had not contacted her over the past few days, probably because he did not know how to start the conversation. He must have checked his computer after returning home. Although Qi Xiyao had deleted all browsing history, he was a cautious person and likely transferred any incriminating evidence.
That was the most disgusting part of it all.
Yu Peirong no longer intended to let Qi Xiyao take any more risks. She told her to focus on filming with the crew and, before leaving, even secured a spot for Qi Xiyao on a highly anticipated variety show.
The show was a trending scripted mystery-solving program. The director was witty, full of creative ideas and unexpected twists. The regular cast consisted of popular stars, so the viewership was guaranteed.
Qi Xiyao was actually very clever, calm under pressure, and talented in acting. She was well-suited to stand out in a show like this and attract more fans. During this period, she had been focused on filming, but a recent magazine feature had caught some attention. It gave her a small but noticeable boost in popularity.
Before leaving, Yu Peirong ordered drinks for everyone on set, including the cleaning staff.
It was getting cold, and filming was difficult under such conditions. Her thoughtful gesture was clearly appreciated. The young actress playing the female lead was An Xiaomachi, a cheerful and bubbly girl. At first, she was a bit intimidated by Yu Peirong’s status as the boss of Yishui Entertainment. But once they got to know each other, she began calling her “Jie” sweetly.
“I used to think President Yu was an Alpha. I didn’t expect you to be an Omega. This is the first time I’ve seen an Omega who gives off such Alpha vibes.”
An Xiaomachi sipped on the milk foam of her tea drink, her voice as crisp as a songbird.
“So, Sister Yu, do you have a girlfriend? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. I’m just curious, what kind of Alpha could be worthy of you?”
As soon as she asked, Yu Peirong hesitated and looked toward Qi Xiyao, who was filming the final scene of the day.
Back then, she and Qi Xiyao had agreed to keep their relationship a secret. They never planned to make it public, only to put on an act in front of certain people when necessary. Although Qi Xiyao was not under a contract that banned dating, being in a relationship during a career upswing could still bring complications. Yu Peirong did not want to give her any unnecessary rumors, and even more so, she did not want Qi Xiyao to doubt her intentions.
“I don’t like Alphas,” Yu Peirong finally said after a long pause. She wanted to leave a little room for ambiguity. She did not want to completely lie to An Xiaomachi, and after thinking it over, this seemed like the safest answer.
An Xiaomachi’s eyes widened.
“So you like Omegas? An OO couple? That’s not impossible either…”
A beautiful, elegant woman like Yu Peirong was irresistible. Feeling closer to her now, An Xiaomachi smiled as she waved to Qi Xiyao, who had just come off set and was putting on a puffer jacket. Then she turned her head back and jokingly said to Yu Peirong,
“Then Sister, would you consider me for an OO couple? What do you think?”
Qi Xiyao, now changed and holding a cup of hot milk tea, walked over to Yu Peirong. But as soon as she saw An Xiaomachi smiling brightly in her direction, her expression subtly shifted. It was rare for her to show even a hint of seriousness.
“What are you two talking about that’s so fun?” Qi Xiyao asked.
An Xiaomachi, carefree as always, giggled and repeated the topic. She meant it as a joke, but Qi Xiyao’s polite smile began to fade into something tighter. Eventually, it turned into a soft, sugary smile, as sweet and rich as red bean paste melted into milk tea.
She reached out and gently patted An Xiaomachi on the head, moving her aside without making it obvious.
“Well, if you’re okay with it, then I’m okay with it too.” Qi Xiyao looked directly at Yu Peirong, her voice soft and tender. “Rong-jie, if you were going to date someone, would you choose me or An Xiaomachi?”
