Chapter 40: Unexpected
Shenyu truly couldn’t handle this.
What was going on with Ning Chen? Why was he intentionally dressing so well? He genuinely felt Ning Chen was doing it on purpose. Had Ning Chen discovered that he was an irreredeemable “visual lover”? While it was a treat for his eyes, it was terrible for his heart.
Shenyu scratched his head and said with some distress, “This… this shirt is a bit sheer… Ning Chen, how about you change into something else?”
If you change, then I’ll actually dare to look at you…
Ning Chen looked down to examine himself, casually tugging at his collar as if nothing were wrong. “Is it sheer?”
Shenyu still didn’t dare to look. He practically fled to the kitchen, turning around while saying, “I’m hungry, Ning Chen. I’m going to eat. You stay here and enjoy the sun!”
Ning Chen watched his retreating back, starting to speak but stopping himself. It seemed he had gone a bit too far and scared He Shenyu off. However, given how shy He Shenyu was, he wouldn’t look him in the eye without a few bold moves. Ning Chen was patient; playing this game with He Shenyu was quite interesting, and he wasn’t in a hurry.
He sat down on the sofa, waiting for He Shenyu to finish eating and return.
…
Shenyu ate breakfast alone in the kitchen. The porridge made by the housekeeper was delicious, and he couldn’t help but finish a large bowl. After eating and drinking his fill, he casually washed the bowl—it was just one bowl, no effort at all. He slowly dried his hands, took a sip of ice water from the fridge, and finally walked out.
Ning Chen hadn’t changed. Shenyu saw him sitting on the sofa at a glance. However, the sunlight wasn’t as bright on the sofa, so the clothes looked much more normal. Of course, he thought, I bought these clothes; if they looked abnormal, why would I have bought them for him? I’m not a pervert…
Shenyu breathed a sigh of relief and went over to sit next to Ning Chen. Ning Chen seemed to be doing something productive, replying to some emails. It looked like English; He Shenyu glanced at it but didn’t look closely. Though his English wasn’t bad, he had learned it specifically to read medical literature and didn’t particularly “like” the language. Besides, he didn’t want to pry into Ning Chen’s privacy—even though Ning Chen didn’t seem to have any sense of hiding it and even moved over to make room for him.
Ning Chen typed the last line and sent the email. He turned to look at He Shenyu and asked, “Do you want me to get your tablet for you?”
Shenyu shook his head. “Since we have time, watch a movie with me.”
“Okay,” Ning Chen didn’t refuse.
Because He Shenyu loved movies, Ning Chen often watched them with him; it had almost become their weekend routine. Shenyu wasn’t familiar with this world at all, and Ning Chen had basically had no entertainment before, so the movies they chose were usually new to both of them. It was like opening a blind box; sometimes they picked a bad one and would quickly switch to another. For this reason, their selection process was very casual.
Shenyu clicked on a movie with a landscape cover. It looked like a healing, slice-of-life film; other than being boring, it shouldn’t have any other flaws. Ning Chen never voiced an opinion; sometimes He Shenyu suspected he wasn’t even paying attention, but when asked for an evaluation, he would always just say, “It’s fine.” Shenyu had even tested him once by asking about the plot, and Ning Chen had actually answered correctly.
“Watch this one?” Shenyu turned to ask.
Ning Chen nodded. “Okay.”
Shenyu sat down again. Ning Chen opened his arm, and he leaned into him. This was their habitual movement; He Shenyu didn’t find anything wrong with it.
As the movie started, He Shenyu tilted his head and asked, “Why do you smell different?”
Ning Chen smiled. “The housekeeper switched to a new body wash, did you forget?”
Shenyu leaned in close to his neck to take a sniff. “Mint? It’s not as fragrant as the old one.”
“Do you like the old one, Shenyu? I’ll have the housekeeper switch it back next time,” Ning Chen said.
Shenyu shook his head. “No need, I don’t smell it every day.”
As soon as he said it, he felt the words were a bit off and quickly shut his mouth. He had been so focused on the scent that he had forgotten how wide Ning Chen’s collar was today. Looking down from this angle, he could see quite a bit inside.
Shenyu quickly looked up and said, “Button up your collar. Aren’t you cold?”
Ning Chen saw his reddened earlobes and gave a light laugh. “Will you button it for me, Shenyu?”
Shenyu hesitated for a moment but didn’t move.
Ning Chen said, “If you don’t help me, I won’t button it. I’m not cold.”
Shenyu sighed inwardly and helplessly leaned over to start buttoning Ning Chen’s shirt. He habitually started from the bottom up. That area was blocked by the jade Buddha pendant; He Shenyu moved the pendant aside and tried to operate with one hand. He struggled for a long time without success, instead rubbing that patch of Ning Chen’s skin red.
Seeing He Shenyu’s face getting redder and redder, Ning Chen suddenly let out a soft laugh.
Shenyu looked up and glared at him, taking Ning Chen’s hand and stuffing the jade Buddha into it. “Hold this yourself first.”
Now, without the obstruction of the jade Buddha, He Shenyu could finally use both hands. But before he could finish, Ning Chen used his other hand to press down on He Shenyu’s hand.
Shenyu looked up, asking with his eyes what he was doing. Ning Chen looked at him with a smile but didn’t speak. He pushed He Shenyu’s hand open and gripped his wrist, guiding his hand to move across his body.
Shenyu didn’t react at all, only feeling the soft touch under his palm. He didn’t move, but Ning Chen led him to press down firmly.
“Don’t…” Shenyu’s ears turned a violent red. He wanted to pull his hand back, but Ning Chen gripped him with even greater strength. His palm was already sliding inside the open collar. In a trembling voice, He Shenyu said, “Ning Chen, don’t do this…”
He felt his face was burning up and didn’t dare to look. Ning Chen, however, was even more aggressive, guiding his palm deep inside the shirt.
“Ning Chen…”
Shenyu lowered his head, only to feel a sudden heat in his nose. Soon, he saw red liquid dripping down, landing one by one onto Ning Chen’s clothes. Blood blossoms splashed onto the hem of the white shirt.
Seeing the situation, Ning Chen lost his previous calm. He finally let go of He Shenyu’s hand and leaned in to check on him. “Are you okay, Shenyu? What should we do now?”
Shenyu snapped out of it, his professional medical instincts finally kicking in. He pinched his nose and said, “It’s fine, don’t worry. Get me an ice pack.”
“Okay, I’m going right now.” Ning Chen stood up and ran off at lightning speed.
…
After a flurry of activity, they finally stopped the bleeding. Ning Chen followed He Shenyu into the bathroom to wash the blood off his hands. After everything was cleaned up, Ning Chen looked at He Shenyu’s nose and spoke hesitantly, “I’m sorry, Shenyu. I shouldn’t have…”
“Don’t… don’t say it,” Shenyu quickly covered Ning Chen’s mouth, his face turning red again. “It’s not your fault. Just… don’t mention it. It’s so embarrassing…”
Ning Chen nodded obediently. Shenyu let go of him, glanced at his clothes, and said, “They’re dirty. Go change.”
“Okay.” Ning Chen nodded.
Shenyu left the bathroom, leaving the space to Ning Chen.
Sigh… Ning Chen felt a bit awkward too. Did this count as a success or a failure? He took a sweatshirt from the closet and changed out of the white shirt. There were four or five drops of blood on the hem; it should have looked strange, but because they were concentrated in one spot, it almost looked like a purposeful dye.
Ning Chen picked it up and sniffed it, his face suddenly turning red. At the thought that this was the scent of He Shenyu’s blood, he even felt an uncontrollable physical reaction. Even he felt he was a bit of a pervert. He stared at the shirt for a while, folded it up, put it in an empty sealable bag, and placed it in the back of the wardrobe. He wanted to keep it as a collection, so he didn’t plan to wash it.
…
The next morning, He Shenyu woke up feeling something was wrong. Likely because he had used the ice pack for too long yesterday, he seemed to have a cold.
Ning Chen had already gotten up; his side of the bed was empty. Shenyu’s throat was sore, and he could barely make a sound. He tried calling out, “Ning Chen…”
As expected, the voice was too small. He reached for his phone on the nightstand and started a voice call with Ning Chen. “Ning Chen… come to the room.”
He managed to say it, but found that Ning Chen didn’t agree immediately. Ning Chen only asked, “Shenyu, why is your voice hoarse? Are you sick?”
“Mm…” Shenyu heard noisy sounds from the phone and realized Ning Chen was out. A sudden wave of sadness hit him. He asked, “Ning Chen, where are you?”
“Meeting a client.” Ning Chen seemed a bit anxious; the sound of wind whistling came through the phone—he was running. “Are there meds at home? Do you want me to buy some? Or should I take you to the hospital?” Ning Chen asked. “Shenyu, I’m coming back right now. Just lie in bed, don’t move, wait for me.”
“Okay, come back first,” He Shenyu nodded, swallowing his strange emotions. “It’s fine, don’t run. It’s not serious. I don’t think I have a fever, don’t worry.”
“Okay, wait for me.” Ning Chen hung up.
Shenyu put down the phone but still struggled to get up and wash. He wanted to take some medicine, and he couldn’t eat anything without washing up first. After a quick wash, he found the first-aid kit in the living room and checked his temperature—no fever. He went to the kitchen; the housekeeper had just made porridge, so he ate a little. Then he found some cold medicine and took two pills with water.
By the time he got back to bed, he was feeling drowsy again. However, this feeling was very different from normal sleepiness. Shenyu looked at the ceiling and had a sudden hallucination. It felt like he was back in his own home, staring at the same white ceiling he used to see before falling asleep. He actually hadn’t been home for a long time, having lived in school and hospital dorms; he didn’t know why he suddenly thought of it now.
Thinking of this, and then of the graduation certificate he hadn’t yet received, he suddenly felt exhausted. He didn’t actually want to be in this world.
He missed home a little.
Tears flowed from the corners of his eyes without him noticing; he just stared at the ceiling in a daze.
“Shenyu,” Ning Chen opened the bedroom door, a gust of cold air entering with him. “Shenyu, how are you? Should we go to the hospital?”
He knelt by the bed, only then discovering that He Shenyu was crying. He was stunned. “What’s wrong? Is it very painful?”
Shenyu reached out and grabbed his hand. He was startled for a second by how cold Ning Chen’s hand was. He shook his head and said, “It’s fine, no need for the hospital. I checked my temperature, no fever, and I’ve taken medicine.”
“Okay,” Ning Chen gripped his hand back, unable to resist reaching out with his other hand to wipe the tears from the corner of He Shenyu’s eye. He asked softly, “Did something else happen? Why is Shenyu crying?”
The sadness in Ning Chen’s tone finally made He Shenyu realize he was crying. He looked at Ning Chen and said, “Nothing’s wrong. I just… I miss home a little…”
“Miss home?” Ning Chen realized then that He Shenyu had never mentioned where his home was. “Then, once you’re better, I’ll go back with you.”
Shenyu gave a small smile, and his tears flowed even more heavily. He pulled Ning Chen’s hand and held it tight. He said:
“Ning Chen, come with me. Let’s go back to my home together. Let’s stop playing here, okay? I’m a bit tired… I’ll take you away…”
