I Raise My Wife in a Supernatural Story (Infinite) - Chapter 34
The negotiations downstairs wouldn’t be settled so quickly, and Qi Yan wasn’t planning to just stand around watching. She suggested to Bai Qing that they head up to the third floor first.
“The escalator to the third floor is running now,” Qi Yan said, her tiny hand vaguely pointing in the direction of the escalator. “When we went up to the second floor earlier, the third floor wasn’t open yet.”
This meant they had completed their tasks on the second floor and wouldn’t need to play any other attractions here. They could go straight to the third floor.
“While Sanshui is busy convincing those people to team up, let’s go up first. It’d be best if we can avoid them and get ahead.”
Bai Qing looked down at the doll in her arms and asked, “Why avoid them? If Miss Jiang successfully teams up with them, wouldn’t our goals align?”
“That’s true, but…” Qi Yan hesitated. “That guy named Wushuang gives me a really bad feeling. If he could abandon a teammate without hesitation on the roller coaster, there’s no telling what he might do to us later.”
Bai Qing’s brows twitched, and she scoffed coldly. “He wouldn’t dare.”
Qi Yan sighed, clasping her hands behind her back. “He doesn’t know how ruthless you are. A scoundrel like him wouldn’t hesitate to do anything.”
Hearing this, Bai Qing’s aura grew even colder. “Then I’ll make sure he knows.”
Some ancient demons, having lived too long and grown too powerful, developed an unshakable arrogance. In her domain, Bai Qing was indeed invincible, and she had every right to that confidence. However, Qi Yan, being a modern person, approached things more analytically, considering the specific circumstances and conditions.
“I know you’re amazing, absolutely incredible, the most powerful in the whole world!” Qi Yan was slowly figuring out this great fox’s temperament and had come to realize that she needed to stroke her ego from time to time.
Sure enough, after hearing Qi Yan’s words, Bai Qing narrowed her heterochromatic eyes, her expression pleased and clearly flattered.
“But…” The art of persuasion lay in this lavish praise first, then the pivot. Qi Yan continued, “But right now, I don’t want you showing yourself in front of them, especially that Wushuang. He’s no good.”
Qi Yan made no effort to hide her disgust and aversion toward Wushuang, expressing it clearly in both her words and tone.
“Sanshui mentioned before that there’s a lot of competition among players that we don’t know about. Seeing Wushuang made me realize that. In this game of survival, everyone will do whatever it takes to stay alive. We can never be sure if someone harbors ill intentions, so we need to be extra cautious.”
In her short 22 years of life, Qi Yan had never given much thought to the complexities of human nature. While humanity often shone with brilliance, malice was unavoidable especially when survival was at stake.
If Wushuang could sacrifice a teammate without hesitation, there was no telling what else he might do. No matter how strong Bai Qing was, Qi Yan didn’t want to recklessly expose her. Her presence would draw too much attention.
Qi Yan had a bad feeling, if Bai Qing became a known factor, players would inevitably flock to her.
Like in an online game, those with god-tier equipment always became targets. After all, who wouldn’t want such power for themselves?
If others were to discover the existence of Bai Qing, a powerful and bindable Demon King it would likely cause trouble, putting both of them in danger.
After discussing, Qi Yan asked Bai Qing to find a way to send a message to Jiang Miao, informing her that the two of them would head to the third floor first and that Jiang Miao should find a way to regroup with them later.
While the other three were locked in their argument, Jiang Miao seized the opportunity to reply to Bai Qing. She told her that the two women could be persuaded to join forces against Wushuang and assured them that things on her end wouldn’t be too problematic, advising them to be careful.
The layout of the third floor was even more eerie than the two floors below. Most of the lights on this level were off, with only a single flickering yellow bulb illuminating the far end.
Bai Qing’s eyes darkened as she murmured, “There’s someone standing there.”
At the far end of the third floor stood a man dressed in a white shirt and black trousers. Just by his silhouette, he bore a striking resemblance to the administrators they had encountered in the previous two attractions.
At that moment, there were no other players on the third floor. Bai Qing didn’t hold back her abilities with a mere flash, she dashed forward with Qi Yan in her arms, stopping right in front of the man in white.
Taking a closer look at his face, Qi Yan thought to herself: As expected, he looks exactly like the previous two administrators.
“Brave freerunner, hello. I am the administrator of the third-floor attraction Happy Horror.”
As he spoke, his gaze remained fixed on Qi Yan, clearly aware that this doll was the actual player.
Qi Yan grew wary. Judging by the administrator’s demeanor, he seemed fully aware that Bai Qing wasn’t a player at all.
This administrator behaved differently from the two downstairs. He showed no extra expression, mechanically carrying out his duties.
“Would you like to enter the Horror House for an adventure?”
Horror House? Qi Yan abruptly turned her gaze to the door behind the administrator though “door” wasn’t quite the right word. It looked more like a pitch-black hole, with a sign above it that read: Horror House.
As the name suggested, this was likely the equivalent of a haunted house in an amusement park.
In the real world, visiting a haunted house was no big deal those with strong nerves wouldn’t have any issues. But here, it was obviously different. After all, aside from the players, everything else was a ghost.
The three little ghosts were nowhere to be seen. They hadn’t appeared at the roller coaster earlier, so they were probably lurking inside this haunted house, ready to pop up at any moment. Who knew what kind of mischief they’d stir up this time.
Qi Yan patted Bai Qing’s hand, signaling her to prepare to enter.
The administrator stepped aside, watching expressionlessly as they walked into the dark hole behind him.
Upon entering, the lights were still on, with arrows on the walls guiding the way forward. Pushing aside the curtain, they stepped into a pitch-black passage.
Bai Qing stood at the entrance of the passage, holding Qi Yan. Her eyes glowed faintly as she scanned the darkness ahead.
Qi Yan blinked, trying to adjust to the darkness. Humans couldn’t compare to demons she couldn’t see as clearly as Bai Qing in the dark. All she could do was try her best to adapt.
“It’s too dark there’s not even a hint of light,” Qi Yan muttered, her tiny doll eyes blinking rapidly as she clung to Bai Qing’s arm. “You can see, right? What’s ahead?”
“It’s a very long corridor, no, wait, it’s a circular corridor, like a cloister, with a courtyard below. One side of the corridor is open, guarded by railings overlooking the courtyard; the other side has many rooms, each with large windows facing the corridor.” Bai Qing described as she walked forward, stopping at the first room’s entrance and continuing, “Inside, there are many, many desks and chairs arranged quite neatly all facing one wall, which has a large. Hmm, black board hanging on it.”
“A classroom?” Qi Yan suddenly interjected. “It seems like a classroom. This haunted house is designed to resemble a school!”
As time passed in the darkness, Qi Yan’s eyes gradually adjusted, allowing her to make out some shapes.
This haunted house was relatively realistic. Unlike many commercial haunted houses that plunge visitors into total darkness for maximum fright, here there was a faint, moonlight-like glow, enabling those who adapted to the dark to at least see the path ahead.
Clutching Bai Qing’s arm, Qi Yan scanned the entire corridor, her mind racing as she compared the mall’s layout with the haunted house’s design. “The structure of this haunted house shouldn’t be too complicated, it’s just a circular space built along the mall’s third floor. The mall has a hollow center with a courtyard below, and this haunted house mirrors that.”
Bai Qing walked to the railing and looked down. “But if this were the mall, we should see other attractions below, right? At the very least, there should be a large roller coaster running from the first to the third floor. There’s nothing here.”
Qi Yan shook her head. “In a world governed by supernatural rules like this, isn’t anything illogical just par for the course? You’re a supernatural being yourself, how can you find this illogical?”
Bai Qing was left speechless. Her spiritual energy hadn’t recovered much, leaving her unable to easily see through the illusions crafted by ghosts and monsters. Her animalistic nature kept her thinking in straightforward, visual terms except in moments of crisis, a lingering effect of her damaged soul that prevented her from directly piercing through magical deceptions.
Clearly, the sharp-witted Qi Yan, though lacking spiritual energy or magical abilities, had gained some experience after surviving the beginner’s trial. Her keen mind kept her highly vigilant, easily recognizing that everything here could be an illusion.
It seemed she needed to recover more spiritual energy as soon as possible.
Lost in these thoughts, Bai Qing glanced down at the doll in her arms. If she weren’t in this weakened state, she could easily help Qi Yan break the spell and restore her original body. But for now, she was powerless.
Unaware of Bai Qing’s inner turmoil, Qi Yan remained focused on analyzing the haunted house. She patted Bai Qing’s hand and said, “Let’s move forward. The exit should be somewhere after we circle this corridor. Let’s see what lies ahead.”
Bai Qing snapped out of her thoughts and nodded in agreement. “Alright.”
A person and a doll walked forward like this. Bai Qing moved with small steps, vigilantly observing the surroundings, even wrapping herself in a faint, barely detectable spiritual energy as protection. This script was clearly much more difficult than the beginner one Qi Yan had experienced before. Judging by the proficiency of the other players, this scenario was no easy task. Looking at Qi Yan’s current state, it was clear they had been too careless.
Thinking back to how they had been in a cold war at the time, Bai Qing couldn’t help but feel regret. If she had been more vigilant back then, perhaps the situation now would be much better.
The Nine-Tailed Demon King had cultivated for over a thousand years and ruled as the demon king for centuries. She had always been proud and self-assured she had every right to be. But now with her soul severely damaged, even that bit of arrogance was hard to maintain.
The empty, silent corridor held only the two of them. To conserve her spiritual energy, Bai Qing didn’t take the easy route of floating, but her footsteps were still incredibly light, making no sound at all.
Suddenly, the path ahead was blocked, a transparent barrier of light stood in their way. The only way forward was to enter the classroom beside them, pass through, and exit from the back, bypassing the barrier to continue.
Bai Qing refused to accept it. She raised her hand and unleashed a surge of sword energy, which shot toward the light with overwhelming force. But the moment it collided, a deafening explosion erupted before gradually fading back into silence.
Qi Yan covered her ears and muttered, “Seems like brute force won’t work. We’ll have to follow the rules.”
Bai Qing, unwilling to give up, wanted to try again, but Qi Yan stopped her. “Forget it, don’t waste your energy. In this script, the core boss has absolute home-field advantage. Your spiritual energy hasn’t fully recovered yet there’s no need to clash head-on. We’d just be at a disadvantage.”
