- Chapter 22.1 - The Final Mountain Ritual
The mountain rocks trembled violently, and the suspension bridge swayed perilously in the air.
But what charged toward them was even more shocking, a monstrous beast of unimaginable size.
Anyone with eyes could see it was an enormous serpent.
Its head was triangular, with eyes like two crimson lanterns. Its gaping maw bristled with fangs as sharp as daggers, gleaming coldly, while its blood-red forked tongue lashed like a whip. A single glance was enough to send chills down one’s spine.
The massive serpent’s body was covered in emerald-green scales, and its tail lashed out, smashing a nearby boulder into rubble in an instant.
Qi Yan instinctively rubbed her eyes, clutching the iron chains of the bridge tightly as she stammered, “It has wings on its back!”
This was a flying serpent!
No wonder, how else could it have appeared so suddenly on this suspended bridge?
“A Tengshe. I never thought I’d see one in a place like this,” Bai Qing’s voice came from the ring, unusually serious and alert, a stark contrast to her usual laziness.
Qi Yan clung to the chains, urgently asking, “Y-you know it?! Is it a demon too?!”
Compared to her terror, Bai Qing remained composed. “The Tengshe is a divine beast, not a demon. It hasn’t taken human form, but it has already touched the divine realm just one step away from godhood.”
Qi Yan didn’t understand any of this and had no interest in figuring it out. “I just want to know if you can fight it!”
Bai Qing chuckled lightly. “If it were a true Tengshe, even at my peak, I wouldn’t claim certain victory, it’d be a fifty-fifty fight.”
Qi Yan was a master at picking up key points, and she immediately wailed in despair, “You said ‘at your peak’! But you’re not at your peak now!”
A vein throbbed at Bai Qing’s temple. This kid always caught the important details just never the right ones. Was she doing it on purpose?
“I clearly said ‘if it were a true Tengshe’ as the premise. The Tengshe in this storybook is obviously a fake!”
In the few seconds they spoke, the Tengshe had already lunged forward. Its wings flapped rapidly, though not as nimbly as a bird’s not even comparable to Tang Shanshan’s.
Yet those unremarkable wings propelled it with terrifying speed. In the blink of an eye, it was upon them, its tongue darting toward Huo Zheng like a spear thrust.
At the critical moment, Huo Zheng instinctively raised his dagger to block. With a metallic clang, the blade actually held against the serpent’s strike but his entire arm went numb from the impact. Beyond gripping the dagger, he had no strength left.
Though the dagger barely withstood the attack, Huo Zheng was powerless to resist further. The battle was already lost, the serpent’s fangs would soon pierce through his body.
Qi Yan’s face paled as she shouted, “Xiao Tang, get Brother Huo out of here!!”
“But,” Tang Shanshan glanced back at her. “What about you?”
“There’s no time! You can carry one person safely go now! I’ll manage!”
“O-okay!”
In those brief words, the Tengshe was already poised to bite Huo Zheng in half. At Tang Shanshan’s speed, she likely wouldn’t make it in time.
Qi Yan’s eyes burned with desperation. At this point, she couldn’t bear to watch a teammate die in front of her even if they were just a temporary group, she wanted all three of them to make it out alive!
What to do, what to do?!
At the critical moment, a white figure shot out from the ring, instantly transforming into a dazzling streak of light that charged straight at the Tengshe. A cold gleam flashed before their eyes as the serpent suddenly let out a mournful cry, rearing back in retreat.
The white figure solidified into a physical form mid-air, a woman clad in a flowing white gown, wielding a longsword with an ethereal, immortal grace. She stood proudly, her sword pointed directly at the Tengshe, her delicate brows slightly furrowed, exuding an aura of authority without anger. “Wretched beast, retreat!” she commanded.
Seeing her appear and repel the Tengshe with a single strike, Qi Yan reacted swiftly, shoving Tang Shanshan urgently. “Quick! Take Brother Huo and go!”
Bai Qing’s sudden appearance left Huo Zheng and Tang Shanshan utterly stunned, both frozen in place. Fortunately, Qi Yan’s prompt reminder prevented the precious time she’d bought from being wasted.
With this unexpected aid, Tang Shanshan didn’t hesitate. She summoned her crow-feather wings instantly, lifting Huo Zheng into the air and putting as much distance as possible between them and the Tengshe.
Perhaps noticing their ascent, the Tengshe shifted its focus, letting out a piercing roar as it flapped its wings, preparing to give chase.
Bai Qing frowned in displeasure, raising her sword to block the Tengshe’s path.
Sparks flew as her blade struck the serpent’s iron-hard scales, the brilliant flashes forcing Qi Yan to squint.
Watching Bai Qing and the Tengshe locked in aerial combat, Qi Yan wasted no time. She grabbed the iron chains of the suspension bridge and sprinted toward the opposite side. Regardless of the fierce battle overhead, her priority was to get off the bridge lingering there was far too dangerous. One misstep, and a broken bridge would send her plummeting into the valley below!
The battle raged fiercely in the sky. Bai Qing’s sword struck the Tengshe’s scales repeatedly, but aside from the initial blow that severed its forked tongue, every subsequent attack was deflected by its armored hide.
Frustration gnawed at Bai Qing. Her spiritual power had recovered less than twenty percent, preventing her from summoning her true weapon, “Snow Bone.” Otherwise, a single strike would have severed the beast’s vital point.
This creature wasn’t a true Tengshe, yet even engaging it required considerable effort. The struggle only reinforced Bai Qing’s irritation at her diminished spiritual reserves.
In mere moments, Qi Yan scrambled desperately across the swaying bridge. Just as the mountain path came into view, the iron chains snapped beneath her. Her footing gave way, and she tumbled downward.
“Sister Qi!” Tang Shanshan cried out in alarm.
Distracted, Bai Qing glanced down to see Qi Yan clinging desperately to a broken chain, her entire body swinging violently toward the cliff face.
For an ordinary person, such an impact would shatter internal organs. With no time to react further, Bai Qing channeled most of her remaining spiritual energy into a final, decisive strike at the Tengshe’s vital point. Though her current sword wasn’t “Snow Bone”, the blade that had slain countless divine and demonic beings infused with her power, it could still cut through metal as if it were mud.
With a sharp cry, Bai Qing’s blade, wrapped in her remaining spiritual energy, cleaved through the Tengshe’s scales at its seventh inch, slicing it clean in half.
Her sword slipped from her grasp as Bai Qing herself dissolved into a wisp of smoke, darting toward Qi Yan just before she collided with the cliff.
No matter what, she had to protect her now!
Qi Yan squeezed her eyes shut, her mind echoing one phrase: “Doomed.” Crashing into the mountain would be agonizing, she’d surely lose half her life!
But the expected pain never came. Instead, she felt herself land against something soft someone had caught her, shielding her body from the impact with the cliff.
The momentum of the impact sent them crashing toward the mountainside. The person holding her in their arms let out a muffled groan, and a familiar, delicate fragrance was carried by the mountain breeze, drifting into Qi Yan’s heart.
Her eyes snapped open, and she saw a fleeting trace of pain hidden in Bai Qing’s beautiful fox-like eyes pain that vanished as quickly as it appeared.
“You! you!” Qi Yan wanted to ask something, but the mountain wind was too strong. The moment she opened her mouth, it forced its way in, making her shut it again.
The pain in Bai Qing’s eyes dissipated swiftly, replaced by the usual lazy indifference she often wore. A thought transmitted directly to Qi Yan: “Don’t move. We’re going up.”
Before Qi Yan could react further, she felt Bai Qing’s arms wrap around her waist, and with a single leap, they were lifted upward.
The winged serpent had been slain, and Tang Shanshan seized the opportunity to bring Huo Zheng up. By the time the three of them regrouped above, Bai Qing had already returned to the ring.
Seeing that Qi Yan was completely unharmed, Tang Shanshan sighed in relief before asking, “That fairy sister just now, where is she?”
Fairy sister…
Qi Yan’s mind spun dizzily. The first thing that came to her was Bai Qing’s ethereal, ice-and-snow-like silver-embroidered white robe, standing alone with a sword to block the winged serpent, the strike that severed its vital point, radiant and unstoppable. And then, the moment just now when she had shielded Qi Yan in her arms.
From the moment they encountered the winged serpent until now, only a few minutes had passed. Yet in that short time, so much had happened, leaving countless images imprinted in her mind. And what had taken root most firmly in Qi Yan’s thoughts was the snow-white robe that had fluttered without wind.
Was she bewitched?
Or had that collision just now knocked her silly?
Even though Bai Qing had taken the brunt of the fatal impact, the force of the collision had still been considerable. Coupled with the terror of being airborne, maybe she really had been scared out of her wits.
