I Quit Being This Female Lead (GL) - Chapter 15
As she pushed the door open, Xun Fangyun could still hear Mang Ke coughing.
Under the mound of blankets on the bed, Mang Ke was wrapped in thick quilts with her eyes open. Seeing that the person bringing the meal was Xun Fangyun instead of Aunt Liu, she couldn’t help but look puzzled.
“Why is it you?” Mang Ke asked, bewildered: “Where is Aunt Liu?”
“She’s busy with other things downstairs.”
Xun Fangyun closed the door, walked to the chair by the bed, and sat down. She placed the tray on her lap and used the back of her hand to test the temperature of the bowl.
“How… how are you feeling?” Xun Fangyun stared at Mang Ke. Seeing her listless appearance, she felt a pang of guilt. I was fine after drinking and getting exposed to the cold wind last night, so why did this person suddenly develop a fever?
Mang Ke shook her head. After a moment’s thought, she sighed: “I haven’t been sick in a long time. This feeling is so uncomfortable…” Although her body was alarmingly hot, Mang Ke felt intensely cold, the kind of cold that ten quilts couldn’t alleviate.
Xun Fangyun looked at Mang Ke. Her usually vibrant chestnut long hair was now drooping listlessly like its owner, making her look sickly.
“Being sick always feels terrible.” Xun Fangyun stirred the porridge with a spoon, then scooped up a spoonful and blew on it, saying: “Eat something.”
Mang Ke was indeed hungry. She held onto the edge of the bed and sat up. She smelled the pure aroma of the porridge, the fragrant scent of new rice. If it were before, she would have been drooling from hunger, but today Mang Ke had no appetite at all.
Xun Fangyun brought the spoon to Mang Ke’s mouth, waiting until her pink lips enclosed the edge of the spoon before slowly feeding the rice porridge into Mang Ke’s mouth. Mang Ke took a sip, smacked her lips, and commented: “It has no taste at all.”
Xun Fangyun couldn’t help but chuckle softly: “You’re sick, so of course you can’t taste anything.”
Mang Ke watched Xun Fangyun bring another spoonful over. She could only open her mouth and eat a few bites. She actually didn’t like this bland porridge, but she was sick and couldn’t help it. She forced herself to drink half a bowl.
In the end, Mang Ke really couldn’t eat anymore. Her mouth felt dead-bland, she couldn’t taste anything, and drinking more made her lose her appetite completely. She shook her head, wrapped herself in the quilt, and lay back down on the bed.
Xun Fangyun held the warm rice porridge, looking at Mang Ke’s pitiful appearance, feeling quite helpless. Why so childish? But she’s also quite cute.
She put the bowl and spoon aside and told Mang Ke: “Stretch out your arm. I’ll take your temperature.”
“Didn’t the doctor just take it?” Mang Ke asked strangely.
“That was the doctor,” Xun Fangyun said calmly: “Now I need to see if your fever has gone down.”
“Mmm… alright then.” Mang Ke extended her arm to Xun Fangyun. She took out the thermometer and placed it inside Mang Ke’s inner elbow.
37.9 degrees Celsius. Xun Fangyun’s dark eyes stared at the numbers. It was indeed quite a bit lower than this morning, but she was still feverish.
“Don’t go anywhere today. Stay at home,” Xun Fangyun said: “I’ll stay home and keep you company today.”
Although Mang Ke had a fever, it didn’t stop her from raising little question marks. “Why?” Mang Ke asked, puzzled: “I just need to sleep at home since I have a fever. You should still go to work.” Besides, if you don’t go to work, how can I be a happy, carefree rich wife? Although this thought was a little unprincipled, Mang Ke really enjoyed the feeling of being idle at home.
Xun Fangyun looked at her with cold eyes: “I’m accompanying you. Do you have an objection?”
Mang Ke shrank her neck: “Yes, you usually don’t even bother to talk to me, so why are you suddenly going to accompany me today? Are you… having some kind of problem?”
Instantly, the room was eerily quiet. Mang Ke was quite afraid when Xun Fangyun remained silent. That feeling was exactly like when the class teacher stood in front of her during school, with a cold face and saying nothing. The only difference was that Xun Fangyun was prettier than every teacher Mang Ke had ever known.
But beauty couldn’t be eaten. A fierce woman was even more terrifying.
Whether it was her imagination or not, Mang Ke felt that Xun Fangyun’s ears were inexplicably flushed. Her usually fair and round earlobes were now pink, making the silver diamond stud earrings look very delicate.
“You caught a chill last night because of me. Is there a problem with me taking care of you?” Xun Fangyun crossed her arms, tilted her head, and assumed a haughty posture: “I’ve always wondered, didn’t they say that idiots don’t catch colds? Why did you get sick so quickly?”
Mang Ke: “????” One second ago, she thought Xun Fangyun was a good person, and the next, she called her an idiot! What is wrong with this woman! Being deliberately contradictory shouldn’t be like this!!
“Who are you calling an idiot!” Mang Ke crawled out of bed, wrapped in her quilt, and exclaimed: “Are you mistaken? You treat me like this after I got a fever because of you? I thought you had changed because you were so thoughtful when feeding me earlier!”
Xun Fangyun smiled, pressing her lips together: “What? I’m preparing to take care of you for a whole day. Do you still have complaints?”
Mang Ke stammered: “Oh, please, Your Majesty, I beg you to go to work! I’m perfectly fine recovering by myself at home.” At least I won’t be driven crazy.
Xun Fangyun snorted: “No. I have to watch you get better.”
Mang Ke wondered: “Why?”
“Because…” Xun Fangyun chuckled softly: “You said you would stay with me forever. How can I let you lie in bed sick all by yourself?”
Mang Ke: “…” Huh??? What is up with this woman? I’m the one with the fever, not you, so why are you being so presumptuous???
Mang Ke stared at her with a conflicted expression, then paused before saying: “What did you say?”
Xun Fangyun’s earlobe seemed to flush again. She coughed and said: “You promised me yesterday that you would stay with me forever.”
Mang Ke seemed to recall such an incident. She thought Xun Fangyun had forgotten since she was drunk then, but she didn’t expect her to bring it up now. “I only said that because I saw you crying sadly,” Mang Ke said: “It was just to comfort you.”
Xun Fangyun was silent. After a long time, she said: “So, you’re backing out?”
“No,” Mang Ke quickly said: “I always keep my word. I said I’d stay with you forever, and I meant forever.” Anyway, when the plot ends, we’ll go our separate ways. It doesn’t hurt to say a few sweet things now for better communication later.
Xun Fangyun’s mood seemed excellent. Mang Ke could even see the black tips of her hair at her temples bobbing with cheerful enthusiasm.
“I’m not someone who struggles with my feelings.” Xun Fangyun reached out, lifted Mang Ke’s chin, and placed a kiss on her lips: “Let’s get along well from now on, Mrs. Xun.”
