I Quit Being This Female Lead (GL) - Chapter 12
Did you hear? Xun Fangyun brought her wife to the last tea party!
Huh? What happened the one time I didn’t go???
Xun Fangyun? Which Xun Fangyun?
Which other Xun Fangyun is there? The one who made it onto the rich list in her early 20s!
Didn’t she announce her high-profile engagement a while ago? No one ever saw who she was engaged to. We all thought she just found someone random to marry because of her age and would continue doing whatever she wanted afterward. Who would have thought their relationship seems particularly good? She and her new wife left hand-in-hand right in front of us.
Yes, yes, I saw them whispering, too! And Xun Fangyun’s doting expression didn’t look fake at all!
I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it! You have no proof!
Video
Look, I even have the video. Her eyes were practically overflowing with affection. I think they genuinely like each other.
Don’t talk nonsense. Yue Yin is still in the group. What if she sees this? Quickly retract that message…
Yue Yin was holding her phone at that moment, reading the casual chats in the rich wives’ group, feeling a slight sense of annoyance. She was definitely jealous, though for a moment, Yue Yin wasn’t sure whose jealousy she was feeling. After all, she was the first one to befriend Mang Ke.
The scene where Mang Ke helped her at the hotel is still deeply etched in Yue Yin’s memory. At the time, she felt that Mang Ke was a very… unique girl. Unlike the cold, stony Xun Fangyun, Mang Ke was obedient, sensible, and clever, the type of person you’d want to get close to when you met her. Facts proved she was indeed that kind of girl.
Yue Yin emptied her mind, soaking in the bathtub, aimlessly scrolling through her phone. After a long time, she finally clicked on Xun Fangyun’s profile picture and sent her a message: [Do you have time? I’d like to meet you.]
After an unknown amount of time, Xun Fangyun finally found her phone and replied to Yue Yin.
Xun Fangyun: [Where shall we meet?]
Yue Yin: [Let’s meet at that coffee shop we often go to. I’ll wait for you there this afternoon. I hope you won’t stand me up.]
Xun Fangyun looked at Yue Yin’s cold message, her dark eyes as deep as a pool. She knew the two of them eventually had to clear the air. If she were following the original plot, Xun Fangyun should now be cold and indifferent to Mang Ke and getting intimate with her ex-girlfriend.
But the current Xun Fangyun didn’t want to follow the plot anymore. She realized that kind of melodramatic plot was exhausting. She clearly had feelings for Mang Ke, so why should she go after a first love she couldn’t have inside or outside the book?
Xun Fangyun didn’t reply to the message. Instead, she threw her phone aside, intending to wash up first. As she left the room, she heard a clanging sound from the room next door, though she didn’t know what was going on.
Aunt Liu (劉姨) looked into the room with some worry, anxiously clasping her hands. “Miss Mang Ke, what you’re doing is very dangerous. Please come down and let the repairman handle it.”
“It’s alright! I can change a lightbulb myself!” Mang Ke stacked several chairs, took the replacement lightbulb, and climbed up. Looking down, her legs turned to jelly: “Wow, it’s so high! Wuwuwuwu…”
Hearing this, Xun Fangyun looked into the room and saw Mang Ke in her nightgown standing on top of two stacked chairs, squatting and trembling, wobbling as she tried to stand up.
Aunt Liu saw Xun Fangyun and said: “Miss Xun, look at her…”
It turned out that the lightbulb in Mang Ke’s room had broken, and she had volunteered to replace it herself. Xun Fangyun stood at the door with her arms crossed next to Aunt Liu, and said to Mang Ke: “Be careful, you might fall.”
Mang Ke looked up and saw Xun Fangyun, as if she had found a life-saving straw. She shouted at her: “Yun Yun, you’re tall! Come over quickly and help me change the lightbulb!”
Xun Fangyun: “???” Why should I change the lightbulb just because I’m tall??
Although she said that, Xun Fangyun still felt that it wasn’t safe for Mang Ke to change the lightbulb herself. She might even lose her life. So, she rolled her eyes and walked over.
“Come down,” Xun Fangyun looked up at her: “I’ll change it for you.”
Mang Ke nodded, tentatively stretching out her foot.
“Ngh…” Her toes couldn’t reach the padded stool no matter how hard she tried. Mang Ke’s face looked pale as she said: “I think I can’t get down.”
Xun Fangyun: “…”
Mang Ke said pitifully: “Yun Yun, I’m afraid of heights…”
Xun Fangyun: “…” If you’re afraid of heights, why did you climb up! Wouldn’t it have been easier to just call the lightbulb repairman!
Looking at Mang Ke squatting on the chair, afraid to move, Xun Fangyun sighed helplessly. She stood on her tiptoes, grabbed Mang Ke’s arm, and said: “I’ll help you down.”
Mang Ke was trembling as she held onto her arm. Xun Fangyun wanted to laugh but couldn’t, so she just pressed her lips together to look composed. After finally helping her down from the height, both of them were sweating.
“First thing in the morning,” Aunt Liu walked over with a towel and wiped Mang Ke’s face and hands: “Getting all messy. You still have to eat breakfast soon.”
Mang Ke took the towel and wiped her face, then looked back at Xun Fangyun. Whatever else could be said, Xun Fangyun was better at changing the lightbulb than Mang Ke. At least she wasn’t afraid of heights and knew to turn off the power.
At breakfast, Aunt Liu asked Xun Fangyun: “Are you coming back for lunch? Should I make you food?”
Xun Fangyun subconsciously glanced at Mang Ke for some reason. Mang Ke also looked back curiously, not understanding why Xun Fangyun suddenly looked at her when asked about lunch.
“Why are you looking at me?” Mang Ke said, chewing on her spoon: “I’m not the one making you lunch.”
Xun Fangyun thought: Who would dare eat what you make? She turned to Aunt Liu and said: “I won’t be back. I arranged to meet a friend at a coffee shop.”
“Okay. What about the evening? Do you have to work overtime?”
“I don’t know. Probably not.”
Mang Ke couldn’t join their conversation, so she just drank the mixed grain porridge Aunt Liu had prepared, ate her fried dough sticks, and swung her little feet back and forth under the table, clearly enjoying her meal.
Xun Fangyun didn’t know why, but she suddenly felt that this scene, like a family, was very heartwarming, a scene she had once dreamed of.
“I’m going to…” Xun Fangyun thought for a moment, then told Mang Ke: “I’m going out to eat with a friend this afternoon. Don’t run around when you’re home alone. Listen to Aunt Liu.”
Mang Ke nodded: “Oh, I know.”
Xun Fangyun added: “Do you want me to bring back any fruits or snacks?”
Mang Ke blinked in confusion: “We have everything at home. Why would you buy more?”
Xun Fangyun: “…”
She didn’t know why, but the fact that she was hiding her meeting with Yue Yin from Mang Ke made her inexplicably anxious. It was as if she was meeting a mistress behind her wife’s back, making her feel completely uneasy.
“It’s nothing,” Xun Fangyun drank some water and said: “Well, I’m… heading out now.”
Mang Ke smiled sweetly: “Be careful on the road, and come back soon~”
Xun Fangyun: “…” What should I do? The guilt just deepened!
