I Need To Find A Way To Make Her Love Me Again - Chapter 53
Her heart drummed like a war collective. The piercing sound of the flute drove her to reach out and pull the dragon bone floating beside her. In the next second, a bone spiked curved saber manifested in her hand. With a flash of blade light, Yi Lan stepped into the air, charging toward the position of her youngest daughter.
Behind her, a swarm of demons followed her pace, some even surging ahead. Their collective target had suddenly become the small figure in front.
Seeing a four horned, catfish headed armored beast closing in on her daughter, Yi Lan’s eyelids twitched violently. She stared ahead with wide, rounded eyes, terrified of witnessing a scene she could never undo.
But to her surprise, the armored beast that had lunged forward let out a shrill, agonizing scream as it neared the seemingly defenseless child.
Xi Wu’s flute playing faltered. She followed the sound and watched as the massive catfish headed beast’s limbs were decomposed into tens of thousands of fine threads before being absorbed into the child’s body.
The swarming demons, however, were undeterred. They continued to pounce, but only struck empty air. Seeing a tunnel opening in the ground, Xi Wu raised an eyebrow and turned to look at the woman wielding the bone saber. Wherever Yi Lan went, blood splattered in the air, though the child hadn’t been caught yet, the mother was coming for her with a fierce momentum.
Calculating quickly, Xi Wu spoke. “As expected of the Demon Seed that appears only once a millennium.”
“Truly clever beyond measure.”
Yi Lan saw her daughter cleverly escape underground and breathed a small sigh of relief. Hearing the woman’s mocking voice again, she replied unceremoniously, “You are as long-tongued as ever. It’s revolting.”
“It seems you haven’t quite transitioned out of the Animal Path yet. Perhaps I should help cure that habit of yours since you can’t seem to keep your tongue in your mouth.”
Facing this barbed insult, Xi Wu’s expression remained unchanged. She replied, “Yi Lan, I’m afraid this time you are powerless to act, even if you wish to.”
The clear sound of the flute rose again. Unlike the first urgent melody, this one was softer, laced with a seductive, enchanting lilt.
Yi Lan sensed something was wrong. Her strikes became swifter as she kicked away a demon. Feeling a strange, inexplicable restlessness and realizing the flute possessed a powerful bewitching magic, she shouted, “What are you trying to do?”
The other woman intentionally ignored her. The flute music curled through the air endlessly. The stampeding demons became even more reckless, throwing themselves into the tunnel in the ground. Those at the back who couldn’t keep up even began fighting amongst themselves.
Escaping underground, little Yi Rong glimpsed the earth-burrowing demons chasing her from behind. She increased her speed, quickly pinpointing her mother’s location and bursting through the surface near her.
The moment her head emerged, she was hoisted into the air by a powerful force. As a white light flashed before her eyes, she met her mother’s furrowed brow and eyes filled with a mix of helplessness and worry. She immediately lowered her head, not daring to meet her mother’s gaze. She knew she shouldn’t have come out without permission, but she didn’t have time to say sorry.
The other demons turned their heads, staring at them like tigers watching prey, relentlessly charging toward them.
Yi Lan watched as the demons, seemingly stripped of their sanity, pursued her young daughter. She looked at the woman in the distance who was playing the flute to provoke her, the answer to her previous question was now self-evident.
She frowned. Who had leaked the news? No one was supposed to know that her youngest daughter was the reincarnation of the Demon Seed, possessing the immortal Double Demon Hearts.
She scanned her surroundings. Pairs of predatory eyes were fixed on them. Watching the mountain of demons surging forward, Yi Lan took a deep breath. She suddenly raised her hand and tossed the small figure into the sky.
In the blink of an eye, a bolt of golden lightning exploded from the mass of demons. Amidst the chaos, piercing shrieks and howls echoed continuously.
Xi Wu watched as a sea of blood rose from the flat ground, seeing the piles of corpses stacking up around the woman. Looking up at the child held by the dragon bone, her mind stirred.
Twin wings unfurled behind her. Still controlling the bone flute, she flew forward.
Seeing the enemy’s move in the midst of the bloodbath, Yi Lan grew anxious. In her distraction, a frenzied scorpion-spider managed to get close and sting her leg. She crushed the pest in a rage, intending to fly up and intercept Xi Wu.
However, she realized that even after she had quickly expelled the toxin from her ankle, a powerful numbness remained, leaving her temporarily unable to move.
Facing the tireless, successive waves of demons, she was caught between a rock and a hard place. Yet, her gaze never wavered from her young daughter.
Little Yi Rong watched nervously as the woman flew closer. She racked her brain for a way to fight back or escape. Suddenly sensing something, she looked down, a thick, golden glowing tentacle shot up to her, quickly dragging her downward.
The wind whistled. Little Yi Rong saw her mother return to her original form. The shimmering gold light was not only beautiful but could easily extinguish weak lives. The swinging tentacles swiped away the approaching demons with the force of a collapsing mountain.
Watching the eight armed Golden Scaled Octopus (Jinlin Xiao) trying to break through the demon swarm to escape, Xi Wu let out a light laugh, and the flute music stopped abruptly.
“Yi Lan, don’t you hate your original form the most? Why show it now?”
However, even without the flute’s control, the demons continued forward as if they had lost their minds to bloodlust, attacking relentlessly. Facing the mockery, Yi Lan had no heart to bicker. She only wanted to take her daughter and leave.
But Xi Wu would not let them go so easily. She also reverted to her true form, letting out a sharp cry as she dove toward the giant creature on the ground.
Even with eight tentacles, Yi Lan began to show weakness under the continuous group attacks. Xi Wu’s true form had a beak with extraordinary piercing power, making it difficult for Yi Lan to hold her ground. Seeing that the enemy refused to let go, she spoke in a low voice:
“Rong’er, find a way to return to the Divine Tree. I believe you can do it.”
“Mother!” Little Yi Rong looked at the palace halls nearby, thinking they were about to escape danger, only to hear her mother say such words.
Without allowing for further speech, she was tossed into the air again. Watching the countless gazes pursuing her and her mother fighting desperately to block the demons, Little Yi Rong bit her lip. She twisted her body, manifesting her full armor, and rolled onto the ground.
Within a few breaths, she had hidden underground again. If the other demons wanted to catch her, they would have to spend time digging.
Seeing her daughter escape for the moment, Yi Lan shifted her focus back to the battlefield. Her eyes, as large as moons, were as clear as mirrors, reflecting the madness of the demons.
Countless thoughts flickered through her mind. The three paths of living beings, the gift of longevity… neither dead nor truly living. The mysterious soul must undergo tempering. Is this truly a calamity my child cannot escape?
But my child is still so young. How can I let her fall here!
With that thought, she made her choice. Her movements to block the demons slowed down. She allowed the sharp teeth to tear at her and a hundred blades to pierce through. Her towering figure remained anchored to the spot like a mountain.
Xi Wu was suspicious of Yi Lan’s sudden abandonment of resistance. Just as she was about to move closer to test her, she heard a scream that sounded like it had torn through a throat with every ounce of strength.
“Mother, no!”
Xi Wu looked over and saw a bright flash of blue amidst the black mass of demons. She recognized this as Yi Lan’s eldest daughter. Seeing the girl’s panic-stricken face, the feeling of unease in her heart intensified.
The girl tried to rush forward, but after one step, she suddenly froze. Xi Wu didn’t understand why, but she could see the girl’s face turning increasingly pale.
An indescribable sensation gradually crept into her heart. Her instinctive survival reflex made her stop her actions.
Hiding underground, little Yi Rong also sensed something was wrong. Her heart felt a strong, inexplicable unease. She felt panicked and miserable, unable to stop herself from heading upward to see what was happening outside.
But the moment she broke the surface, a hand as if anticipating her, pressed down on her head. A familiar voice hissed into her ear.
“You jinx! Why won’t you listen!”
“Why did you come out!”
She had never heard her sister’s voice sound so choked with tears. Little Yi Rong became even more agitated, struggling to push upward. She wanted to see her mother.
But no matter how hard she tried, the hand pinning her down was like a thousand-pound weight, unmoving.
“Sister, let me out!”
“What happened outside? Why won’t you let me out?”
“Sister! Mother! Let me out! Let me out!”
Each cry made Yan Xingyu’s heart twist with pain. Having a broader perspective, she saw the scene of exposed bones and intestines before her.
She hadn’t expected Yi Rong’s mother to actually melt her own body into a wave, swallowing all the demon beasts taking their lives, melting their skins into water. In the blink of an eye, it was a towering wave of blood.
However, this sea of blood was also dissolving her own life.
Yan Xingyu watched the scene in a daze. Xiao Yin (Little Silver) quickly spoke up: “Master, look at the moon above.”
“What?” Yan Xingyu looked up. The bright full moon was gradually setting, and the world grew darker. A splashing sound echoed in her ears. She turned back.
The once calm sea of blood from the battle began to grow turbulent again. Yan Xingyu saw that the figure previously kneeling on the ground had disappeared, and Yi Rong was gone as well. She was startled.
A scalp-numbing sensation shot through her brain. Following her intuition, she looked up. A bright moon had turned into a giant eye, staring down at her.
The crimson-gold pupil reflected her silhouette. Behind her, the blood colored waves roared incessantly, kicking up high layers of spray, seemingly having finally discovered her as an uninvited guest.
“Who are you?”
The unfamiliar voice made Yan Xingyu go on guard. She questioned back, “Who are you?”
She didn’t forget to look for Yi Rong, but her search yielded nothing.
The rolling pupil flashed with a look of contempt. This brief dialogue flickered away, followed by nothing.
A splash of spray landed on her face. The cool sensation made Yan Xingyu let out a “yikes.” Immediately after, a numbing, itchy sensation spread. She reached out and felt a blood red jellyfish clinging to her palm. Terrified, she tried to shake it off.
But now, there was no way to get rid of the little thing. She watched as the tiny jellyfish extended its tentacles, gripping her palm tightly and growing rapidly as it crawled up her body.
“Xiao Yin, cut it off.”
In the next second, red and silver lashed out at each other, neither yielding. Yan Xingyu guessed this troublesome thing was created by the golden eye above. Since there was a physical object, this was no longer just an illusion.
Her greatest concern was still her lover. Yan Xingyu gripped the black ring on her finger, her mind echoing the words Yi Rong had said to her.
“Hold it, and I will appear.”
Only this time, the person her heart longed for did not appear as expected.
