- Chapter 5 - Seeking the Crane Tower to Achieve Immortality
Everyone in the world knows about Lu Baiyuan’s Bright Azure Tripod Mountain and Shui Wen’s Jade Wave Phoenix Palace.
The two mountains and two palaces each guarded a region. However, a year ago, the Jade Wave Palace was completely destroyed in a great battle with the Demon Realm, leaving its people without protection. Consequently, people sought refuge with the other two mountains and one palace.
Sect Leader Jiang was famous for his virtue, and even more people came to the Bright Azure Tripod Mountain for help. Due to the increasing workload, he was unable to attend to them himself, so the person Yan Xingyu and her group met was Sect Leader Jiang’s younger brother, Jiang Yue’en.
The man was dressed in brocade clothes and long boots, with a sprig of Qionghua blossom on his shoulder and a paper fan gently waving in his hand. He looked courteous and was listening to Ji Zhijie’s report nearby.
He was surprised that the Young Palace Mistress of the Phoenix Palace would be interested in such a small bounty, but since she had come, pleasantries were necessary.
Jiang Yue’en said, “Thank you, Young Palace Mistress, for helping us prevent my unruly disciple from making a big mistake. Please wait a moment, the two of you, as I’ll have a disciple fetch the banknotes.”
Guan Fei replied, “Thank you for the trouble, Young Sect Master.”
“Young Palace Mistress is too kind.” As he spoke, Jiang Yue’en’s gaze shifted to Yan Xingyu. Seeing her face look familiar, but unable to recall where he had seen her, he asked, “What is this young lady’s name?”
“Yan Xingyu.”
Jiang Yue’en paused for a moment after hearing the name and asked, “Is Miss Yan from the Jade Wave Palace?”
Yan Xingyu hadn’t expected the other party to notice her. Originally, she had intended to seek shelter here, but because of Guan Fei, she now just wanted to take the bounty and leave.
Having Guan Fei by her side was much more comfortable than staying under someone else’s roof for protection, so she temporarily didn’t want to expose her identity. She said, “No, it just happens to be the same surname.”
Jiang Yue’en said, “I see. Speaking of which, the destruction of the Yan Clan is truly regrettable. I heard that the Young Palace Mistress has not died, but I wonder where she has gone.”
Hearing the other party say this, Yan Xingyu pondered for a moment and played along, saying, “The Young Palace Mistress has an immortal body. No matter where she is, nothing will happen to her.”
Jiang Yue’en shook his head and said, “An immortal body is a source of disaster. Even if the Young Palace Mistress is alive now, she must be suffering greatly. Moreover, how could that Demon Prince give up on taking back his heart?”
“It seems her fate is troubled, and it is difficult to find a clear path.”
Yan Xingyu agreed with the other party’s statement. Thinking of the woman from earlier, she knew the woman would definitely come knocking again. She couldn’t defeat her, and Guan Fei couldn’t defeat her either. They couldn’t just keep hiding forever.
So, pretending to chat but actually testing the waters, she said, “If the Young Palace Mistress could escape the Demon Prince’s pursuit and find a place to live in seclusion, her life wouldn’t be too miserable.”
Jiang Yue’en said, “It’s very difficult. Unless the Young Palace Mistress returns the Demon Heart in her body to the Demon Prince, the other party will surely pursue her relentlessly.”
Returning the heart to Yi Rong would mean asking her to die, which she couldn’t do. Not hearing the answer she wanted, Yan Xingyu gave a perfunctory reply: “Indeed.”
Jiang Yue’en seemed to recall something and said, “If Palace Mistress Yan had found the Crane Tower and achieved immortality back then, the Yan Clan wouldn’t have fallen to such a state.”
Yan Xingyu was intrigued by this statement and was about to ask something when Ji Zhijie returned and presented the banknotes, saying, “Young Palace Mistress, these are banknotes from Ba Datong Village. Please take the one hundred gold.”
Guan Fei said, “Miss Yan, please help me hold them.”
Yan Xingyu smartly took the banknotes, checked them to make sure they were correct, and felt joy that her purse was finally full, yet her expression remained calm as she put them away.
Seeing that the money was exchanged, Jiang Yue’en said, “If Miss Yan and the Young Palace Mistress have time, you are welcome to look around Bright Azure Tripod Mountain.”
Yan Xingyu saw that the man had no intention of returning to the previous topic, and she couldn’t press him. Thinking she would ask Guan Fei later, she lost interest in staying here and said, “Thank you, Young Sect Master. No need, thank you for the hospitality, we will take our leave now.”
The two came and left in a hurry. After descending the mountain, Yan Xingyu unrestrainedly asked the person beside her, “Guan Fei, what is that Crane Tower?”
Seeing that she was interested in this, Guan Fei recalled, “Once upon a time, there was a woman who was good at deception and loved luxury, causing trouble for many people. Yet, such a person had quite an opportunity. One day, she got lost while traveling and accidentally stumbled into a small tower. Inside, white cranes were singing and dancing. She happily went forward to join them and actually flew to the immortal realm with the cranes, taking her place among the immortals.”
“Thus, a popular saying spread: ‘Cultivating immortality is not as good as achieving immortality at the Crane Tower.'”
Yan Xingyu was stunned and said, “Isn’t that just a fictitious strange tale?”
Guan Fei chuckled and said, “It really isn’t. That woman is now the Immortal Maiden Xiangzhu.”
Yan Xingyu was speechless for a moment.
Guan Fei continued, “So everyone at the time wanted to find the Crane Tower so they wouldn’t have to cultivate painstakingly.”
Yan Xingyu thought, who wouldn’t want to take such a shortcut?
Guan Fei guessed her thoughts and added, “However, people with such opportunities are few and far between. Only one Immortal Maiden Xiangzhu has emerged in all this time.”
“When everyone gave up searching for the Crane Tower a century later, one person encountered it again, but she did not achieve immortality.”
Guan Fei didn’t keep her in suspense and continued, “That person was the previous ancestor of the Jade Wave Palace. She brought out four spirit crystals containing the elements of wind, fire, water, and earth from the Crane Tower and scattered them across different places. She said that she was giving away the opportunity for immortality, and that as long as the next destined person collected these four crystals again, they would find the Crane Tower and achieve immortality.”
“Thus, another frenzy of searching for the traces of the Crane Tower was formed for a time, but now it has faded.”
Yan Xingyu asked, “So, has anyone successfully collected them?”
Guan Fei replied, “Not yet. But I heard that Palace Mistress Yan had already collected three of the crystals. However, whether it’s true or false cannot be verified now that the person has passed away.”
Yan Xingyu secretly asked Little Silver, “Is this true?”
Little Silver answered, “I don’t know if the Palace Mistress was collecting spirit crystals, but I have heard about this story of the Yan family ancestor.”
It seemed that although the story was absurd, it was actually true. Currently, her spiritual power was weak, and she had no strong backing, but Yi Rong would come looking for her sooner or later. There seemed to be no other way right now. If she could find the Crane Tower and achieve immortality, then the other party would be nothing to fear.
With this thought, she said, “Guan Fei, are you interested in joining me to search for this Crane Tower?”
Guan Fei’s expression changed in surprise. She said, “Miss Yan, I don’t mind, but you must be prepared that it might all be in vain.”
Yan Xingyu mused that she didn’t know what else to do right now, but it was better than doing nothing. So, she said, “It’s fine, aren’t we both free anyway?”
Guan Fei smiled upon hearing this and nodded, “That’s true.”
Having reached an agreement, Guan Fei took out a map that floated in the air, slowly displaying mountains, rivers, and city outlines. Yan Xingyu watched in awe. She heard the person next to her say, “Miss Yan, we are currently at Bright Azure Tripod Mountain.”
As Guan Fei’s voice faded, a marker for Yuanming appeared on one corner of the map. She then said, “I heard that the Water Spirit Crystal might be deep within the East Great Sea. Although many people have gone and found nothing, I think we can go and investigate again.”
Looking at the East Great Sea marker appearing on the map, Yan Xingyu felt that this thing was more high-tech than a modern map. This world was truly wondrous. Seeing that Guan Fei knew a lot about these matters, she nudged her elbow and teased, “Guan Fei, have you perhaps researched how to find the Crane Tower yourself?”
Guan Fei smiled and said, “I considered it, but I have an eye ailment, which makes things inconvenient. The path to finding the spirit crystals is full of hardships, and I didn’t want to bother others to accompany me.”
Yan Xingyu found this person’s character increasingly interesting. She patted the other person’s shoulder and said, “It doesn’t matter, I’m here. If we are destined to find the Crane Tower, we will ascend together. That would make quite a story.”
Guan Fei smiled and said, “Alright.”
Yan Xingyu stepped forward and pointed at the location of the East Great Sea on the map, saying, “Then let’s set off now.”
As the last ray of sunset fell, the sparkling sea surface grew dim. The hems of their robes fluttered in the wind, their long hair danced, and they flew against the salty sea breeze. Guan Fei flew on her sword above, while Yan Xingyu widened her eyes, trying hard to find a place for them to land and rest.
She didn’t forget to occasionally look down at the little fox in her arms. She said to the person in front, “Guan Fei, how long does the sleeping spell you cast this time last? If this little fellow wakes up again, I won’t be able to handle it.”
“Don’t worry, Miss Yan, it will be a long time before the little fellow wakes up. Even if it wakes up, it’s fine. I will keep a close eye on it.”
Yan Xingyu felt uncertain about Guan Fei’s words. Looking at the churning waves and the inky black night, she thought, if she fell into the sea from here, how long would it take her to swim ashore?
Just as she was looking at the sea and pondering, a flash of lilac that didn’t belong to the ocean caught her eye. Looking closely, it seemed like a woman floating on the sea. Yan Xingyu cried out, “There’s someone on the sea ahead.”
Guan Fei slowed down upon hearing this and flew lower. As the distance closed, Yan Xingyu saw the woman’s emaciated face. Her round eyes were staring straight at them, and a faint, weak voice clearly reached their ears.
“Two fellow Daoists, can you help me?”
The woman was like a purple flower floating on the sea, her skin pale and wrinkled from the seawater, exuding a fragile beauty.
Yan Xingyu asked, “Can we help this person?”
“We can.”
Hearing Guan Fei agree, she reached out to pull the woman up. Seeing that the woman used her spiritual power to force the water out of her clothes herself, and looking slightly more energetic, she said, “My name is Yan Xingyu, and this is Guan Fei. How should we address you, fellow Daoist, and how did you end up in this situation?”
The woman said, “Thank you, fellow Daoists, for your assistance. My name is Liu Ruoni, and I am a disciple of the Azure Tripod Mountain. I came here under my Sect Leader’s order to subdue a sea demon causing trouble in this area, but my cultivation is shallow, I was no match for the demon, and I fled in defeat. Fortunately, I met the two of you for help. I don’t know how to repay you.”
Yan Xingyu said, “You don’t have to be so polite. Miss Liu, do you know if there is a place nearby to rest? It’s late, and we can’t keep flying over the sea.”
Liu Ruoni said, “There is a village to the west of here.”
Hearing what the other party said, Guan Fei sped up and flew west. Before long, an island indeed appeared before them, with flickering lights. As the appearance of the village gradually came into view, Yan Xingyu said, “Miss Liu, where were you staying in the village before?”
Liu Ruoni’s eyes flickered upon hearing this, and she replied, “A fisherman’s house at the end of the village.”
Yan Xingyu said, “Then let’s go there too. Miss Liu is familiar with the place.”
Liu Ruoni said, “Alright.”
The village was small, but the dozen or so households all had lights on. The three rushed to the end of the village and saw shadows flickering in front of the window of the fisherman’s house, which was illuminated by yellow light.
The people inside seemed to have noticed their arrival. With the sound of the wooden door being pushed open with a “creak,” two men and one woman walked out of the house, staring intently at them.
“Senior Sister Liu, you’re back.”
