- Chapter 24 - Seizing the Crystal from the Serpent’s Maw
The Three Headed Python reared its heads at the woman rushing toward it. One head opened its massive maw, exhaling a dragon of fire.
Yan Xingyu gripped her silver blade, slicing directly through the flames. With unrelenting force, she struck at the python, but failed to hit its vital point. The beast’s fangs clamped onto her blade, refusing to let go, while another head lunged to bite her.
She instantly transformed her silver blade into a long rope, spinning to ensnare the giant heads within its coils.
Strangled, the python thrashed its tail in a rage, finally releasing its grip on Jiaoyu. It swung its heavy tail violently toward the woman beside it.
Yan Xingyu commanded “Little Silver” to keep the heads bound. She dodged the tail strike and reached out to scoop Jiaoyu back into her arms.
“Little one, are you alright?”
Jiaoyu gasped for air, her eyes still fixed on the Flame Crystal on the serpent’s tail. “I’m fine. Go get the Fire Spirit Crystal.”
“Right,” Yan Xingyu replied.
She gathered her energy into a blade and struck at the tail. However, the python was cunning, realizing their goal, it stopped using its tail for attacks and instead moved the Flame Crystal toward one of its mouths.
Sensing its intent, Yan Xingyu flew forward to stop it from swallowing the crystal.
Meanwhile, the swelling “monster mouths” in the environment finally reached their breaking point. Yi Rong turned back, sensing something wrong, and struck Guan Fei away with a heavy hand. She instantly teleported behind Yan Xingyu, grabbing her by the waist to shield her.
Before a word could be exchanged, a deafening “BOOM” echoed through the cavern. The shockwave left Yan Xingyu numb, it took several breaths for her consciousness to return.
Looking up, she saw the giant mouth had exploded, spraying molten fragments across the surrounding cliffs and ground.
The lava began to writhe and change. No longer popping as simple bubbles, the fragments seemed to take on a life of their own. Small slits opened on them, and they began to sing a chilling, eerie melody. Yan Xingyu couldn’t understand it, but Jiaoyu felt a magical pull, an inexplicable, burning rage began to rise within her.
Realizing the danger, Jiaoyu immediately blocked her ears and shouted, “Don’t listen to their song! It’s a lure!”
Yan Xingyu instantly sealed her hearing. She turned to warn Yi Rong, but saw the other woman’s face go rigid. Her body tensed, and a streak of scarlet appeared in her pale amber eyes.
Yan Xingyu’s heart sank. Hurriedly clutching the little fox, she backed away from Yi Rong’s embrace to observe her reaction. She was terrified, if Yi Rong lost control, they would all be finished.
In the distance, a blue shadow was rapidly approaching. Seeing this, Yan Xingyu fled with the fox. The Three Headed Python, seeing that the woman and the fox were unaffected by the song, flicked its tail and prepared to dive into the lava.
Yan Xingyu noticed the Flame Crystal was gone from its tail, it must have swallowed it. She couldn’t let it escape.
She grabbed the silver rope binding the beast. As it wavered, she transformed the rope into a short dagger and plunged it deep into the center of one of the serpent’s heads. A piercing, multi-layered shriek erupted, followed by a weakening hiss. One head was finished.
She retreated as the remaining two heads, eyes wide with fury, lunged at her.
Turning, she saw Yi Rong and Guan Fei fighting again. Seeing that Yi Rong hadn’t lost her mind entirely, she breathed a sigh of relief. She decided to lure the python toward Guan Fei to distract her, giving Yi Rong an opening.
But the python was spiteful. It joined the fray, and seeing that Yi Rong was a formidable opponent, it subtly manipulated the surrounding “mouth monsters.” Through some unknown method, it managed to silence the only person who had fallen under the spell.
With a whip of its tail, the serpent coiled around the person and hoisted them high over the lava in a show of defiance. The threat was clear. Yan Xingyu stared in shock, this damned snake had a thousand schemes.
Yi Rong moved to subdue the python, but the beast reacted by lowering its captive toward the bubbling lava.
“Wait! Don’t move, Yi Rong!” Yan Xingyu screamed.
Yi Rong froze, and the serpent stopped its movement. Yan Xingyu, realizing what was required, said, “Don’t move. Let me handle this.”
Yi Rong’s eyes flashed with cold fury, but the snake didn’t budge until Yan Xingyu stepped forward. Only then did it lift the captive slightly higher.
Unsure if the python understood her, Yan Xingyu spoke as she approached: “We can talk. I’m sorry for hurting you. If you’re angry, take it out on me, don’t hurt my friend.”
The python glared at her with murderous intent. It wanted her to suffer.
Seeing the central head flicking its tongue, waiting for her, Yan Xingyu knew she wouldn’t escape unscathed today. Looking at the motionless Guan Fei, she worried for her friend’s state. Since she herself was immortal, what did it matter if she walked into the snake’s mouth? As long as she could save her.
Her steps became firm. Yi Rong tried to intervene, but the snake instantly moved the captive toward the lava again.
“Yi Rong, stay back! I’ll be fine. Wait for me,” Yan Xingyu called out.
Yi Rong felt a surge of frustration but remained still, watching helplessly as Yan Xingyu walked into the danger zone.
As soon as she was within range, the python lunged and bit down.
As the fangs pierced her upper arm, the serpent’s rage briefly subsided, only to be replaced by a searing pain in its own mouth that nearly drove it mad.
Seizing the distraction, Yi Rong blurred forward and rescued Guan Fei.
Jiaoyu watched as Yan Xingyu sacrificed her arm to manifest a double headed spear, pinning the snake’s head to the ground. Yan Xingyu then kicked off the other head, her silver claws growing massive. She forced the serpent’s jaws open and, sure enough, saw the Fire Spirit Crystal. She reached in, snatched it, and swallowed it instantly.
In moments, the tide turned. Without the crystal, the Three Headed Python lost all strength and collapsed. The screaming “mouth monsters” vanished, turning back into ordinary lava.
Yan Xingyu bit her lip, fighting back tears of pain. Blood soaked through her sleeve. She breathed heavily, trying to focus.
Yi Rong rushed over, lifting Yan Xingyu’s arm and channeling spiritual energy to stop the bleeding. Seeing the woman gasp in pain, Yi Rong’s face turned ghostly pale, as if she were the one bleeding.
“Thank you, Yi Rong. Don’t worry… I’m okay,” Yan Xingyu comforted her, despite the pain.
Yi Rong stared at the wound in silence. Before Yan Xingyu could say more, Guan Fei’s voice drifted over: “Xingyu, are you all okay?”
Guan Fei, seemingly regaining consciousness, stood up and walked toward them. Yan Xingyu replied, “We’re fine. Guan Fei, you lost consciousness. Do you remember?”
“I… I don’t know. I felt like I was back in a place I hated. My heart was full of rage. I only remember wanting to get out.”
Guan Fei approached, her lingering anger telling her she had done something wrong. Yan Xingyu saw her guilt and felt relieved that Guan Fei was blind otherwise, she’d have to comfort another person over her injuries.
Then, a voice spoke up: “You really are useless.”
Yan Xingyu remembered that it was thanks to Jiaoyu’s quick thinking that they got the crystal. She turned to thank the little fox, but instead of a small animal, she saw a stark-naked woman standing before her.
