- Chapter 2 - The Aunt with Dissociative Identity Helps Her Escape
Yan Xingyu’s eyelids twitched. Her years as a mercenary told her instantly that she had encountered something far more dangerous. She asked, “Which way should I run?”
Little Silver was fully focused, scanning all directions, knowing that if Yan Xingyu failed to escape, it would be doomed as well. It immediately said, “Mistress, run to the right, keep running, and don’t stop no matter what you encounter.”
In just a few breaths, the Red Spiders were visibly getting closer and closer to her. Hearing Little Silver’s command, Yan Xingyu didn’t hesitate and took off running.
The place was truly bizarre. Initially, she was running in the forest, but the further she ran, the more towering stone peaks rose up around her. The path ahead became increasingly narrow, and the peaks blotted out the sky, turning the day into a deep twilight.
Amidst the stone peaks, suddenly appeared flowers that glowed with a faint, eerie light. Six slender petals unfurled to reveal a curved stamen, looking like an orchid but not quite, illuminating the path ahead of her.
The light in the gloom was particularly eye-catching. For a moment, Yan Xingyu felt the urge to stop and see what kind of flower shone with such beautiful light, but she remembered Little Silver’s words do not stop. The conflict resolved with reason prevailing, and she suppressed the thought of stopping and sped forward.
Seeing that its beauty was being ignored, the flower seemed to become annoyed. It spread its petals, and a long, slender stamen snaked out, catching up to Yan Xingyu and clinging to her shoulder.
A gentle voice called out, “Miss.”
Little Silver quickly warned, “Mistress, don’t look back, keep running.”
Yan Xingyu was startled by the sudden female voice. Hearing Little Silver’s words, she suppressed the discomfort, ignored the sensation on her shoulder, and kept running without pause.
But the flower was terribly persistent. It clung to her, constantly calling out in her ear and interfering with her concentration. Yan Xingyu cursed silently, thinking, This is f**king annoying.
Little Silver sensed her displeasure. Seeing that there was no path ahead, it thought of something and shouted, “Mistress, you can grab the thing on your shoulder and throw it forward with all your might!”
This instruction confused Yan Xingyu, but trusting Little Silver now was the safest bet.
She did as instructed, reaching out and grabbing at her left shoulder. She had expected to catch a female ghost clinging to her, but instead, her hand closed around something like a vine, yet not quite a vine, a plant-like object that she pulled away.
The incessant female voice in her ear instantly stopped. Yan Xingyu held the glowing flower in her hand and felt a renewed surge of curiosity, wanting to examine it closely.
Little Silver noticed her intention and urgently cried out, “Mistress, throw it out quickly!”
Yan Xingyu’s greatest strength was that she was an obedient executor. As soon as Little Silver spoke, she immediately hurled the flower forward.
She watched the faint light streak through the air and smash against the stone wall ahead. Suddenly, the flower grew monstrously huge, actually forcing a fissure into the wall. Its menacing, dangling stamen shot out towards her.
Yan Xingyu ducked, dodging the attack. Her sharp eyes spotted a path that had opened up in the fissure. Mustering all her strength, she charged into the opening, narrowly evading the giant, enraged flower’s various assaults, and finally ran through.
Looking back, she saw the swarm of Red Spiders surging toward her like a wave, about to reach the entrance. Fortunately, the enormous flower outside was indiscriminately attacking every living creature around it, giving her a brief moment of respite.
Little Silver said, “Mistress, quickly place a barrier over the opening.”
Yan Xingyu thought, I don’t know how, and truthfully replied, “I can’t.”
Little Silver said, “Mistress, even if you’ve lost your memory, you can still do this. Try to sense your inner spiritual energy and focus it forward.”
Yan Xingyu listened to Little Silver’s words and strained to perceive the spiritual energy it mentioned. A subtle, almost imperceptible airflow truly began to gather around her. She raised her hand and pointed forward. The next moment, the cave entrance seemed to be covered by a transparent veil, cutting off the connection with the outside world.
Little Silver saw the barrier was successful and said, “Alright, Mistress, let’s go quickly.”
Yan Xingyu was astonished by the changes in her body, but she had questions. She asked, “Little Silver, where exactly are we?”
“Mistress, we are currently in the Demon Realm. Anything we encounter on the road could be a demonic creature, so we must be extremely cautious. However, we only need to find the exit of the Demon Realm and return to the Human Realm.”
As Little Silver spoke, it noticed a dark shadow approaching rapidly and shouted, “Mistress, someone is coming!”
Yan Xingyu felt a strong gust of wind assault her from behind. She rolled to dodge, and a cold flash of light whizzed past her ear. She rapidly retreated and looked up to see a woman with a severe gaze pointing a sword at her.
Upon seeing her face, the woman’s icy expression momentarily froze, replaced by surprise. She said, “Rou’er, you got out?”
Saying this, Yan Xiaoling noticed the dense swarm of Red Spiders outside the entrance gnawing at the thin barrier. She flicked her hand, reinforcing the barrier.
Putting away her sword, she looked at the disheveled girl with half-cut hair, a hint of distress in her eyes. She said, “Rou’er, you’ve suffered.”
Yan Xingyu had initially assumed the sudden appearance of the woman was an enemy, but hearing her words suggested she was an acquaintance of the original host. Yan Xingyu thought, I should try to get close and see if she can help me. Just then, the woman’s expression abruptly changed.
She laughed hideously, her voice sharp with sarcasm, “Suffered? The daughter of the sinner who caused the collapse and demise of the Yan clan deserves to live? Why hasn’t Yirong killed you yet?”
“Truly a useless waste.”
Yan Xingyu sensed that something was wrong and retreated a few steps, watching the woman cautiously.
The woman then began to wail in agony, “Yan Xiaoling, you dead woman, why haven’t you died yet…”
The woman’s voice cut off abruptly, and silence fell in the cave. Yan Xiaoling rubbed her temples, forcing out a gentle smile, and said, “Rou’er, I’m sorry if I scared you.”
Yan Xingyu looked at the woman’s drastically different behaviors, wondering if she had a dissociative identity disorder.
Little Silver promptly clarified, “Yes, Mistress. This is your aunt. It is said that she went astray in her cultivation, and her inner demon can emerge and try to take control of her body at any moment.”
Yan Xiaoling saw the girl remain silent and sensed a problem with her spiritual energy. She said, “Rou’er, why has your spiritual energy become so weak?”
Yan Xingyu didn’t know how to answer the question. In her state of complete ignorance, it was best to be cautious with her words. However, she then heard Yan Xiaoling speak to herself, “It must be Yirong’s doing. To torment you, she would go to such lengths.”
Her eyes filled with tenderness as she spoke. She walked toward Yan Xingyu, raised her hand, and emitted a beam of light. A burst of spiritual energy was transmitted, instantly making Yan Xingyu feel refreshed and comfortable as a surge of abundant power flowed into her body.
She looked at the smiling, friendly state of Yan Xiaoling and thought that the “good” personality was approachable. So she politely said, “Thank you, Aunt.”
Yan Xiaoling said, “Good child, now only the two of us are left of the entire clan. You must live well.”
She turned and looked at the tireless, wave after wave of Red Spiders fiercely attacking the barrier outside the cave. Frowning, she took off a conch shell embedded with a crystal pendant hanging on her chest. She walked over to Yan Xingyu and reached out to put it around her neck.
Watching the pale blue crystal’s light gradually suppress the unique aura emanating from Yan Xingyu, she smiled and said, “Rou’er, this Jade Conch is for you. It can protect you from being easily noticed by demons and monsters.”
“But you can’t stay in the Demon Realm. You are too attractive to these demonic creatures. I will now set up a formation to send you back. Go to Mount Yuanming, to Sect Master Jiang. He will help you.”
Yan Xingyu hadn’t even figured out anything and was about to be sent to another place. She quickly said, “Aunt, there’s no need to rush to send me away. Besides, I don’t even know that Sect Master Jiang.”
Yan Xiaoling said, “Don’t worry about that. I will send you directly to Mount Yuanming, and someone will meet you.”
Saying this, the woman directly used her flying sword to draw a formation. Looking at the neatly arranged symbols that appeared on the ground, she called out, “Rou’er, hurry and step in.”
Her posture clearly indicated that she would not tolerate Yan Xingyu’s refusal.
Little Silver said, “Mistress, the exit of the Demon Realm appears randomly. It would be very difficult for us to find an exit on our own. Since there’s a teleportation array, you should go in first.”
“This array consumes a lot of spiritual power, and we can’t activate it, so this is an opportunity we can’t miss.”
Hearing this, Yan Xingyu no longer hesitated. She thought that once she was out of danger, she could address everything else.
Seeing her step into the array, Yan Xiaoling focused her mind and chanted an incantation. Yan Xingyu noticed a slight disturbance in the cave’s barrier, but the next moment, white light exploded within the formation. When she opened her eyes again, she only heard shouts of abuse.
“Where did this beggar come from? Don’t block the way, move aside!”
Hearing the voice, Yan Xingyu turned around and saw a burly man running towards her. His words annoyed her, but considering she was unfamiliar with the place, she suppressed her anger and stepped back to let him pass.
As the man ran off, she looked at the surroundings and realized she was in a small alley. She asked, “Little Silver, are we back in the Human Realm?”
Little Silver said, “Yes, Mistress. But this is not Mount Yuanming we seem to be in an ordinary city.”
Yan Xingyu said, “That’s fine. We are safe now that we are in the Human Realm. Little Silver, can you briefly tell me what happened before?”
Her priority now was to understand what had happened to the original host. She couldn’t keep running into people and situations completely clueless.
Little Silver realized its Mistress had truly forgotten everything. However, it didn’t know everything itself, so it could only give a general overview of the past and the current situation.
“Mistress, although I am your Soul Beast, I was only domesticated by your mother, the Palace Master of the Jade Orchid Palace, Yan Xiaoxiang, when you were sixteen, to be your Soul Beast companion. There are some things I am not entirely clear about, so I can only tell you what I know.”
“The person who has been hunting you is named Yirong. You two grew up together, but because you domesticated me, you were poisoned by an incurable toxin. To save you, the Palace Master dug out Yirong’s second heart and gave it to you. Although she is a demon, she has two hearts due to her special nature, so giving you one would not kill her.”
“However, the pain of having her heart dug out caused her to resent the Palace Master. After years of lying low, she secretly colluded with the Demon Realm, destroyed the Jade Orchid Palace’s barrier, and allowed the demon race to invade and slaughter everyone in the palace. Everyone in the Yan clan, including the Palace Master, died, except for you and your aunt.”
“But it seems the Palace Master did something to Yirong, preventing her from directly taking back her heart. However, she couldn’t kill you either. So, she took you to the Demon Realm and put you into an illusionary barrier to torment you until you were willing to return the heart to her yourself.”
“You were tortured and killed repeatedly in the Nine Mysteries Palace for over a year… ”
“Excuse me, Miss in front, could you please let me pass?”
Yan Xingyu was listening to Little Silver recounting the past when a female voice interrupted them. She saw a woman wearing a light gauze robe rapidly walking towards her, clutching a small, fire-furred fox.
Yan Xingyu noticed the white veil over the woman’s eyes and, realizing she was blind, stepped back a few paces, almost pressing against the wall to let her pass.
Guan Fei hurried past but didn’t forget to say, “Thank you, Miss.”
Once the woman had passed, Yan Xingyu wanted Little Silver to continue, but then the same man’s abusive voice rang out in her ear.
“Why is this dead woman running so fast? And why is that beggar still here? Move aside quickly, don’t block the road!”
Hearing this, Yan Xingyu’s eyes narrowed, and her anger flared up. But thinking of the unfamiliar place, she suppressed it and moved out of the way again.
Seeing the man walk away, she said to Little Silver, “Go on.”
Little Silver said, “Oh,” and continued, “Mistress, Yirong kept you locked in the Nine Mysteries Palace, torturing and killing you repeatedly. Although you are immortal, this caused your spiritual power to be damaged. A few more times, and your body would not have been able to handle it. Fortunately, Mistress, you finally woke up and stopped being soft-hearted towards her, or we would have both died there.”
“However, Yirong will not let you go so easily. You have one of her hearts inside you, and no matter where you are, she can find you. She will definitely come looking for you again.”
“Furthermore, many demons and monsters desire Yirong’s heart. Whoever possesses it can achieve immortality, so many demons and monsters are also vying for you, Mistress.”
“Luckily, Mistress, you now have the Jade Conch, which can conceal the demonic aura emanating from Yirong’s heart, making it less likely for other demons and monsters to notice you. You only need to be careful of…”
“Miss, I am so sorry to bother you again, but could you please let me pass?”
It was that same voice again, interrupting Little Silver. Yan Xingyu turned to look at the woman who had appeared repeatedly, and an inner fire ignited. She cursed, “Are you sick? You keep circling around here, and you can’t even run far enough away?”
