I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 18
Back in the room, Su Miao saw Duan Bainian watching a movie.
After thinking for a moment, she deliberately paced around in front of Duan Bainian.
Duan Bainian sniffed the air and asked, “Did you go out for grilled fish?”
Su Miao replied, “That’s right! I went with Xiao Song! The grilled fish was so delicious!”
Duan Bainian gave a faint smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “That’s nice.”
Su Miao was stunned—
Eh? Why was this person’s reaction different from what she had imagined? Shouldn’t she be at least a little angry?
Su Miao said with a smug look, “Xiao Song also said the grilled fish was particularly tasty. She said she wants to go eat grilled fish with me often in the future!”
Duan Bainian watched the movie, perfunctorily responding with a distracted, “Mm.”
Su Miao, who was fully expecting Duan Bainian to be jealous: “…”
Seeing that Duan Bainian had no reaction, Su Miao felt it was boring. She went into the room to get her script and returned to the living room. “It’s time to go over the script.”
Duan Bainian said, “Your lines are quite good now; you don’t need me anymore.”
Su Miao didn’t catch the implication. “Huh? Didn’t you say just the day before yesterday that I need to keep practicing my line delivery?”
Duan Bainian paused the movie, her face expressionless. “Su Miao, do you really have to force someone to lay everything out in the open?”
Su Miao was dazed. “What do you mean?”
Duan Bainian smiled. “What do I mean? I mean that from now on, I don’t want to help you go over your script anymore.”
Su Miao’s eyes widened. “Why?!”
Duan Bainian replied, “You don’t need me anymore.”
Su Miao immediately retorted, “I do need you! We are going to be best friends for a lifetime!”
That “best friends for a lifetime” truly left Duan Bainian speechless.
She didn’t even have the right to be jealous of a young boy.
The more Duan Bainian thought about it, the more annoyed she became. She stood up and turned off the TV. “I’m going to sleep.”
The confused Su Miao uttered an “oh” and followed her into the bedroom.
Duan Bainian’s tone was full of distaste. “Aren’t you going to shower?”
Su Miao habitually moved closer to Duan Bainian’s side, having forgotten all about it. “Oh, I forgot. I’ll go now.”
After Su Miao finished her shower and returned, she crawled into the covers and prepared to grab Duan Bainian’s arm as usual, but to her surprise, Duan Bainian shook her off.
Su Miao was stunned. “Are you… unhappy?”
Duan Bainian mocked, “In the future, you’d better stop hugging and clinging to me. I’m afraid your little boyfriend will get angry.”
Su Miao truly didn’t understand. “You’re a girl. Isn’t it normal for girls to hug and cuddle? Besides, he isn’t my boyfriend. Don’t talk nonsense.”
Duan Bainian gave a short laugh. “He will be a boyfriend soon enough, won’t he?”
Su Miao felt a bit displeased.
Even her mother hadn’t forbidden her from dating; she only said that if there was someone she liked, she must tell her mother so she could help vet them.
But what was with Duan Bainian? And here she was, her best friend—why wasn’t she happy for her at all? Instead, she was being sarcastic and weird.
Su Miao argued back, “Why don’t you like our class monitor? He is a really good person, and he’s quite kind to me.”
Duan Bainian countered, “So, whoever is good to you, you become close with them?”
Su Miao said, “Yeah! If someone is good to me, I should naturally be good to them too. Is there something wrong with that?”
Duan Bainian sneered, “And I really thought our relationship was the closest.”
Su Miao scratched her head. “That’s different. You are my best friend. The class monitor—he is the boy I’m closest with.”
Duan Bainian took a deep breath, turned over, and didn’t want to pay any more attention to Su Miao.
Looking at Duan Bainian’s cold back, Su Miao also felt aggrieved.
She hadn’t done anything wrong. Why was Duan Bainian acting like this? And she had even said the class monitor was “vile-hearted” that afternoon.
The Duan Bainian of these past two days wasn’t gentle at all.
The two of them began a mysterious cold war.
Actually, Su Miao didn’t want a cold war, but every time she took the initiative to speak to Duan Bainian, she was completely ignored. After this happened two or three times, she didn’t dare to try speaking to her anymore.
Su Miao was very melancholy.
She knew the reason why Duan Bainian was angry—wasn’t it just because she had gotten close to the class monitor?
However, she couldn’t bear to hurt such a kind person as the class monitor, nor did she want Duan Bainian to be so angry that she ignored her.
Most importantly, she felt she hadn’t done anything wrong. Why should she have to listen to Duan Bainian?
Without Duan Bainian to help with the script these past two days, her line delivery wasn’t as smooth as before, and she was scolded several times in a row by Wu Yang.
This made her even more melancholy.
At three o’clock in the afternoon, the heavily melancholy Su Miao received a phone call that made her a hundred times more miserable.
“Is this Su Miao?”
Su Miao asked hesitantly, “Who are you?”
“I am Cheng Shu.”
Su Miao felt it was strange. Cheng Shu was her classmate, but they hadn’t spoken to each other since the start of university.
Su Miao asked, “Do you… have some business with me?”
Cheng Shu said, “I heard the class monitor went to see you a couple of days ago, right?”
Su Miao became alert. “Why… why are you asking this?”
Cheng Shu was silent for a moment. “I am his girlfriend. We’ve been together since the end of freshman military training.”
Su Miao panicked. “He said he didn’t have a girlfriend.”
Cheng Shu pressed, “Did you say yes to him?”
Su Miao quickly denied it. “I didn’t.”
Cheng Shu remained silent for a while and then hung up the phone.
A good while after the call ended, Su Miao finally reacted sluggishly and put away her phone. Fortunately, she didn’t have any scenes in the latter half of the afternoon, so she called her assistant and returned to the hotel early.
When Duan Bainian finished work and returned to the hotel at night, the first thing she saw upon opening the door was Su Miao lying haphazardly on the bed, her face full of sadness and dejection.
She froze for a moment, then went straight to remove her makeup and shower without acknowledging Su Miao.
After showering, Duan Bainian got into bed on her own side, preparing to use her phone to watch a movie.
A moment later, she heard Su Miao suddenly burst into tears. “Duan Bainian… ugh…”
Duan Bainian thought the dummy simply couldn’t take the cold war after a few days and was crying for a reconciliation, so she didn’t pay any attention.
Unexpectedly, she heard the dummy say, “You were right… ugh… the class monitor really isn’t a good person…”
Only then did Duan Bainian become interested, quietly waiting for Su Miao’s next words.
“It turns out the class monitor has a girlfriend… boohoo… his girlfriend called me today… ugh…”
Hearing this, a sense of delight began to sprout bit by bit in Duan Bainian’s heart. “Is that so? Then what do you plan to do?”
Su Miao cried until her features were all wrinkled together. “I’m so sad! He seemed like such a good person, how could he lie too?”
Duan Bainian was in an excellent mood. “It’s not too late now that you’ve seen his true colors.”
Su Miao blinked, her face full of disbelief. “You… you look very happy right now?”
Duan Bainian froze—was she being that obvious?
She comforted her, saying, “I’m not very happy. Seeing you sad, I’m more than heartbroken for you.”
Su Miao burst into tears again. “But you’re smiling! You’re clearly very happy! Ugh… you’re bullying me too!”
Being inexplicably accused of bullying, Duan Bainian simply decided to live up to the name. “Yes, I am very happy. I said long ago that the class monitor wasn’t a good person, so of course I’m happy now!”
Su Miao stared blankly at Duan Bainian, crying even more sorrowfully.
Looking at the wailing Su Miao, Duan Bainian’s eyes were filled with uncontrollable distaste.
Tsk, truly ugly.
She thought it would end after half an hour of crying, but surprisingly, even at ten o’clock at night, Su Miao was still intermittently sobbing.
Duan Bainian endured it as long as she could. “Are you going to sleep or not?”
Su Miao sobbed, “I can’t sleep.”
Duan Bainian said, “Then how about we go over the script?”
Su Miao continued to sob, “I feel terrible, I don’t want to.”
Duan Bainian: “…How about I make you some milk powder? It can help you sleep.”
Su Miao shook her head. “I’m not drinking it!”
Duan Bainian got annoyed. “Then what exactly do you want?”
Her only answer was Su Miao’s intermittent sobbing.
After thinking it over, Duan Bainian asked, “Do you want to drink?”
This time Su Miao reacted. “Huh? Drink alcohol?”
Duan Bainian said, “Yeah, aren’t you feeling bad? Drink a couple of glasses of wine, get drunk, and you can just sleep it off. Then you won’t feel bad anymore.”
Su Miao sobbed, “But my mom doesn’t let me drink.”
Duan Bainian retorted, “Your mom doesn’t let you date casually either!”
Su Miao lifted her swollen eyelids. “Then… then I’ll have a little.”
Duan Bainian called the front desk and had two bottles of red wine sent up.
Duan Bainian raised her glass. “Come, let’s celebrate you seeing the class monitor’s true face. Cheers.”
Su Miao couldn’t help but want to cry again. “Why… why do you have to bring that up!”
Duan Bainian smiled. “Fine, fine, I won’t tease you anymore. Drink up. I wonder how your tolerance is? I bet your head will be spinning after two glasses.”
In reality, Su Miao was tipsy after just one glass.
After finishing one glass, within just a few minutes, Su Miao was crying out that her head was spinning and she wanted to sleep.
Duan Bainian then went to support Su Miao, wanting to get her onto the bed.
Su Miao looked small, but she actually wasn’t light.
Duan Bainian exerted quite a bit of effort to drag Su Miao to the edge of the bed. Just as she was about to slowly lay Su Miao down, she was pulled down by Su Miao.
In her panic, Su Miao hooked her arms around Duan Bainian’s neck.
Looking at the dummy beneath her, Duan Bainian suppressed her own impulses. “Let go, I need to get up.”
Su Miao whimpered, “I won’t let go! I won’t let go!”
Duan Bainian was truly provoked to laughter. This dummy wasn’t just capable of “acting out of stupidity,” she could even “act out of drunkenness.”
She repeated, “Let go of your hands.”
Su Miao stared at Duan Bainian with bleary, drunken eyes for a long while. “Duan Bainian, you… you are really beautiful.”
Duan Bainian felt that she, too, was a bit drunk.
Because such a simple sentence from Su Miao actually made her heart beat like a drum.
Her throat felt tight. “Am I really that beautiful?”
Su Miao’s eyes were already unable to stay open. She tried hard to suppress the urge to fall asleep. “Mm… very beautiful.”
Duan Bainian asked, “Then do you like me?”
Su Miao’s eyes grew narrower and narrower. “I like you…”
Duan Bainian asked again, “What kind of ‘like’ is it?”
The person beneath her fell into a deep sleep, leaving the question unanswered.
At some point, Su Miao’s hands had already slipped from her neck. Yet, she remained propped up over Su Miao, motionless.
Her arms gradually began to ache. Duan Bainian looked at Su Miao, who was close at hand, leaned down to give her a light kiss, and then quickly stood up.
After waiting a moment, Su Miao had no reaction.
Duan Bainian couldn’t help but lean in for another kiss.
This time, she tentatively deepened the kiss. To her surprise, Su Miao smacked her lips as if she were eating something, which startled Duan Bainian into immediately pulling away.
Her heart rate having finally steadied, Duan Bainian quietly climbed into bed and turned off the light.
She thought that a kiss carrying the fragrance of wine really was intoxicating.
