I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 12
Duan Bainian never expected He Aizhi to ask such a question. “Ah? Is she stupid? She’s not stupid.”
He Aizhi smiled. “You don’t need to feel embarrassed to say it. Whether she is stupid or not, how could I, as her mother, not know? It’s been over ten years; I got used to it a long time ago.”
Duan Bainian said awkwardly, “It’s not that she’s stupid, she’s just… a bit too innocent.”
He Aizhi nodded. “Yes. In a way, she is so innocent that she’s almost foolish. Tell me, could a person that ‘stupid’ realize that her help might cause you distress?”
Duan Bainian replied, “Probably not.”
He Aizhi continued, “Exactly. She didn’t even think that far ahead, so why are you thinking so much?”
Duan Bainian fell silent again.
He Aizhi sighed once more. “Furthermore, right now, it’s not that she is helping you—it’s that you are helping her. Do you understand?”
Duan Bainian was somewhat confused. “What do you mean?”
He Aizhi furrowed her brows. “You have no idea how hard Su Miao cried when she called me last night. It broke my heart.”
Recalling the previous night, Duan Bainian also felt a deep sense of guilt. “Was she… was she crying very hard?”
He Aizhi said, “She’s been slow since she was a child. In class, she’d be completely lost and couldn’t understand anything. she often made a fool of herself in the classroom. Usually, outside of class, she was always dazed and listless. Her classmates would call her an idiot behind her back and didn’t like playing with her.”
“Later, when she got older—around high school, I think—her classmates stopped making fun of her. But after experiencing those unpleasant things, she stopped trying to make friends. Other students moved in groups of three or five, but she was always alone.”
“In all these years, I’ve never heard her talk about playing with any friend. You are the first. It really hasn’t been easy for her to have a friend.”
“Last night, when she heard you were going back to Gansu, she couldn’t stop crying. So… I’m saying, helping you terminate the contract isn’t really us helping you, but you helping us. Do you understand?”
Duan Bainian’s heart tightened into a knot. How can this fool be so fragile?
He Aizhi added, “Bainian, consider it a favor to me. Think about it, do you have the heart to let Su Miao be that sad?”
Duan Bainian forced a smile. “Auntie, please don’t say that. I know you’re only saying this to make me feel better about myself.”
He Aizhi didn’t respond to that. She pulled out a contract. “Regardless, this is something beneficial to both parties. Take a look at this contract; if there are no problems, please sign it.”
Duan Bainian looked at the corner of the table. “I won’t sign it, Auntie.”
He Aizhi was silent for a moment before saying, “Su Miao has had some mental issues since she was a child. She can’t handle stimulation. If you can stand by and watch her go mad, then you may leave.”
Duan Bainian burst out laughing. “Auntie, what are you talking about! Su Miao doesn’t look like she has a mental illness at all.”
He Aizhi did not answer.
Duan Bainian hesitated. Is Su Miao really sick? Is that why she seems a bit slow?
“Is she… is she like that because she’s sick, that’s why her brain is a bit…” She found the rest of the words difficult to say.
He Aizhi replied, “Yes.”
Duan Bainian was stunned, not expecting He Aizhi to answer so bluntly. She didn’t know what to say for a moment.
He Aizhi said, “Originally, I didn’t want to mention these things. But when I think about her crying like that, my heart aches. Bainian, please sign.”
Duan Bainian was silent for a moment, and then she signed her name on the contract.
He Aizhi let out a long sigh of relief. “Good. My daughter finally won’t have to cry anymore.”
Duan Bainian also felt a sense of relief. Once the decision was actually made, it didn’t seem like such a big deal.
He Aizhi thought for a moment and said, “I think it’s still necessary to tell you something.”
Duan Bainian was puzzled. “What?”
He Aizhi suppressed a smile. “It’s true that Su Miao was sick when she was little, but she doesn’t have a mental illness. She had a slight neurological development issue. It affected her a lot when she was young, but as she grew up, she already healed herself.”
Duan Bainian froze on the spot. “Auntie…”
He Aizhi laughed. “You think I lied to you? But Su Miao’s crying was real, and as a mother, the fact that my heart broke hearing her cry was also real. Please understand the feelings of a mother.”
Duan Bainian felt somewhat helpless. “Alright, Auntie. Rest assured, I won’t go back on a decision I’ve made.”
He Aizhi nodded and instructed, “Then you should head back. By the way, don’t mention that I came to see you, or she’ll start overthinking again. Just tell her directly that you’ve changed your mind.”
Duan Bainian nodded, said goodbye to He Aizhi, and left the restaurant.
Passing by the corner of a small street, the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes wafted through the air. She bought a few small sweet potatoes and brought them back to the hotel.
Su Miao opened the door. When she saw it was Duan Bainian, she initially intended to ignore her, but she couldn’t help herself and spoke up aggrievedly, “Why did you come over?”
Duan Bainian smiled. “I brought you roasted sweet potatoes. Do you want some?”
Su Miao didn’t say she would eat them, nor did she say she wouldn’t; she just stood there motionless.
Duan Bainian patted Su Miao’s head. “First, I want to apologize to you. Last night was my fault; I was too blunt.”
Su Miao still didn’t move.
Duan Bainian leaned closer to Su Miao, looking at her with eyes full of smiles. “I’ve thought it through. I want you to help me terminate the contract. Are you still willing?”
This time, Su Miao reacted. Her pupils dilated instantly. “Are you serious?”
Duan Bainian nodded with a smile.
Su Miao felt like crying again. She hated Duan Bainian so much for always making her cry.
Su Miao held back her tears. “I… I’ll call my mom in a bit. I’ll ask her to help you terminate the contract.”
Duan Bainian teased her on purpose, “Then we should agree beforehand—I won’t be able to pay back the penalty fee for a while. You can’t blame me when the time comes.”
Su Miao was stunned. She was worried; if Duan Bainian couldn’t pay the penalty, would her mother refuse to help with the contract?
No, that wouldn’t do.
Su Miao wiped her nose and said earnestly, “When the time comes, don’t you dare tell my mom that you can’t afford the penalty fee.”
Duan Bainian asked, “Why?”
Su Miao looked worried. “What if my mom finds out you can’t pay and refuses to terminate the contract? You must keep it hidden!”
Duan Bainian’s heart couldn’t help but tremble. She stepped forward and hugged Su Miao. “It won’t happen. I will earn a lot of money in the future, I will pay off the penalty, and I will be your best friend for a lifetime.”
Su Miao’s tears were still flowing, but her eyes had crinkled into a smile. “Me too!”
