- Chapter 26 - The White Moonlight vs. The Humble Substitute
Lin Shuangran was like moonlight scattered across the ground delicate and cool, yet now gently tracing the bridge of her nose, fingertips seemingly carrying lingering affection.
Shi Xingrao could sense that Lin Shuangran liked her, but she still wanted to hear Lin Shuangran say it aloud.
Because she, too, liked Lin Shuangran so very much.
“Raorao, no one could dislike you.”
Lin Shuangran’s response felt slightly evasive, with a hint of something indescribable at the end. Shi Xingrao couldn’t shake the feeling that Lin Shuangran seemed a little different today.
“Lin Yi would also treat you differently.”
Shi Xingrao finally understood the added nuance in Lin Shuangran’s tone.
Shi Xingrao wanted to explain.
But Lin Shuangran’s finger gently pressed against her lips, stopping her from continuing. “I know you haven’t, and I know you wouldn’t. Of course, I like you even more than just liking you.”
“But, Raorao if you ever stop liking me, you have to tell me right away.”
“Don’t let it come to the point where we resent each other.”
“How could I ever stop liking you? What are you saying, sis?” Shi Xingrao blurted out anxiously. “Sis, I’m the one worried that you might stop liking me someday.”
“Then Raorao doesn’t need to worry.” Lin Shuangran, having said so much in one breath, blushed as if belatedly feeling shy.
Unable to resist, Shi Xingrao wrapped her arms around Lin Shuangran’s waist from behind. “Sis, will you sleep with me tonight?”
Nearby, Cat Ears, unable to look away despite itself, clicked its tongue in disbelief. It had always thought Shi Xingrao was the seductive little fox, but after accidentally witnessing this scene, it finally understood someone like Lin Shuangran could turn Shi Xingrao into a complete fool.
Compared to Lin Shuangran, Lin Yi’s romantic skills were like heaven and earth.
A gentle beauty like Lin Shuangran would never blame you, no matter what you did. She’d only quietly feel hurt and say things like, “Don’t dislike me.” Who wouldn’t be utterly captivated by that?
As for Lin Yi, who snapped at people upon sight and then drank alone in frustration, what a waste of a pretty face. Even if everyone else had a partner, Lin Yi probably never would
The next morning, Shi Xingrao woke up and noticed something new around her ankle a red braided anklet, with red beans and tiny silver bells strung together into tassels. She lifted her foot and couldn’t help shaking it gently.
Longing?
Was Lin Shuangran saying she missed her when she wasn’t around? Definitely.
Shi Xingrao couldn’t resist calling out to Cat Ears. “Duoduo, how did you know sis gave me an anklet?”
Cat Ears: “…”
“Sis, do you want to come with me?”
Last night, Shi Xingrao had already told Lin Shuangran that she was going to help Lin Yi today.
“I’ll pass,” Lin Shuangran shook her head. “Be good, and don’t argue with your sister Lin Yi.”
Sunlight filtered through the leaves outside the window, casting dappled shadows and illuminating floating dust. Lin Shuangran stood bathed in the light, her hair glowing like a fairy’s. She smiled again and reached out to pat Shi Xingrao’s head. “Understood, Raorao?”
Shi Xingrao felt that Lin Shuangran’s tone was a bit like coaxing a child, but she still reveled in the head pat.
Just like a happy little puppy.
“If she doesn’t provoke me, I won’t bother her.”
Cat Ears: , Who understands? Its deceitful host really was being coaxed like a puppy.
“Bring Lin Yi back for dinner tonight, don’t forget.”
Before Shi Xingrao left, Lin Shuangran reminded her again. Just as Lin Shuangran thought Shi Xingrao genuinely disliked Lin Yi and didn’t want to bring her back, Shi Xingrao waved her hand and replied, “Got it, sis.”
Receiving a definite answer, Lin Shuangran watched Shi Xingrao’s retreating figure, but the smile on her lips gradually faded. Her gentle, approachable aura was slowly replaced by a cool detachment. The beautiful woman’s eyes held a trace of conflicted complexity.
Shi Xingrao was very obedient to her and cared deeply about her, seemingly willing to interact with people she clashed with, all for Lin Shuangran’s sake. Yet, Lin Shuangran couldn’t be sure if Shi Xingrao actually didn’t dislike Lin Yi that much and was therefore willing to help her. She didn’t know which answer would make her happy, and it felt like neither answer would bring her joy.
Lin Yi was in the tech department, overseeing everyone working overtime. Noticing Shi Xingrao’s arrival, Lin Yi merely lifted her eyelids and said, “You’re almost late for work. I thought you’d be of some real help.”
The emotions that had been soothed by Lin Shuangran earlier now flared up again at Lin Yi’s remark. But remembering Lin Shuangran’s words, Shi Xingrao swallowed the retort she wanted to fire back.
Seeing Shi Xingrao’s frustrated expression, Lin Yi’s crimson lips curled into a slight smile, clearly in a good mood. For once, her words were somewhat tolerable: “Find a seat.”
Shi Xingrao chose the spot farthest from Lin Yi to sit down and released Cat Ears to optimize the program. Lin Yi seemed to be a strict person; even though they had just exchanged words, none of her subordinates looked up or showed any interest in their superiors’ private affairs.
On the computer screen, lines of code rapidly appeared and scrolled by. If anyone had seen the content on Shi Xingrao’s screen, they might have marveled at how coding speed could reach a level akin to flowing light.
Shi Xingrao didn’t understand why Lin Yi remained seated there with no intention of leaving. Every time she looked up, she met Lin Yi’s teasing gaze. Once was bearable, but it happened every single time.
Unable to hold back, Shi Xingrao blurted out, “What the hell? Does Lin Yi have a problem? Why is she constantly provoking me? Does she want to fight?”
“I get that she doesn’t like me dating her sister, but there should be a limit to her disapproval.”
The overwhelmed and exhausted Cat Ears: “…”
Trying to reason with someone like Shi Xingrao, who saw them as a rival, was a dead end. Shi Xingrao was the classic type who responded to softness but not force. Once someone crossed her, she’d always perceive their actions as targeted attacks.
Cat Ears: “Duoduo doesn’t know, host. You figure it out yourself. I’m busy.”
Faced with the overworked Cat Ears, Shi Xingrao let out an unkind chuckle. Glancing at her neatly trimmed nails, she couldn’t help but say, “Duoduo, I’m so bored.”
Cat Ears, whose fingers were practically sparking from typing: “…”
Even Cat Ears’ life mattered.
Shi Xingrao: “Want some milk tea?”
Cat Ears perked up its ears momentarily, feigning innocence and ingratiatingly asking, “Sister Rao, what’s milk tea? Can Duoduo really have some? If you order milk tea for Duoduo, will Sister Shuangran get angry?”
So full of tea.
Shi Xingrao: “…”
Shi Xingrao tightened her pretty little face, “Are you drinking or not? If not, I’ll order my own.”
Cat Ears stopped acting coy and quickly ordered a cup, then couldn’t help but speed up her coding, her mind filled with sweet thoughts: “Sister Rao is so good to me she always shares her milk tea with me.”
Shi Xingrao went downstairs to pick up the milk tea and brought Cat Ears along for a breather.
Cat Ears had never tried milk tea before. She rubbed her hands together like an excited fly, clearly unable to wait any longer.
To return to her workstation, Shi Xingrao had to pass by Lin Yi. But as soon as she reached him, Lin Yi casually took both cups of milk tea from her hands and uttered words that were more dog-like than human: “Thanks.”
Shi Xingrao: “???”
Cat Ears: “??????”
