I Heard That I am a HeartBreaker - Chapter 54
Gu Lingxi looked at Qiu Shuang. Her mind began to conjure up some rather unpleasant thoughts—the kind of things that were only suitable for private fantasies, for if they were to manifest in reality, they would likely end up as headline news on a social tabloid.
Gu Lingxi was wondering: if she were to have a physical relationship with Qiu Shuang, would Qiu Shuang take responsibility for her?
This thought was truly a bit too twisted or strange, feeling like the delusions of a mad concubine in a cold palace or a stubborn, deep-seated prejudice.
But Gu Lingxi really wanted to know the answer…
Unaware of the other’s deviant inner monologue, Qiu Shuang was merely contemplating how to end this dinner party, which had lost all meaning to her.
The so-called “consoling” had been carried out sufficiently, and the clues she wanted had been teased out. Now, the most important thing was to find a suitable excuse to escape this terrible atmosphere.
“Junior, do you know how to drink?”
Gu Lingxi’s question accurately caught Qiu Shuang’s ear. She had been thinking about how to refuse her, and the other had so quickly handed her an opening on a silver platter.
If it came to drinking, Qiu Shuang wasn’t afraid in the slightest. Her tolerance had always been excellent; she had inherited this particular “bad” gene, as her father was a total drunkard.
Sometimes the influence of genetics is loathsome. Despite this, Qiu Shuang had to admit she was born with a fatal craving for alcohol.
This strange desire had been burning constantly, as if it had begun with a joke from an elder during her childhood and the very first bitter drop that touched her throat. This terrifying sensation felt like it was suckling on her soul, impossible to banish for all eternity.
But to keep her head clear, Qiu Shuang mostly suppressed this longing and avoided it as much as possible. She strictly demanded of herself to remain sober and restrained her alcohol intake. Roughly every three months, she would allow herself one indulgence, and upon reflection, it was indeed about that time.
Usually, when she was busy and didn’t hear about such things, it was fine. But once the keyword was triggered, Qiu Shuang could feel her breathing quicken and her mouth constantly secreting saliva.
Gu Lingxi did not miss the way Qiu Shuang inexplicably licked her lips. Those files weren’t exactly thin, nor were they thick, but she had quickly grasped a certain detail.
When she saw the information on the girl’s parents, she had sensed a hint of oddity. Often, in the structure of a family, if both parents possess vices like smoking or drinking, the child will inherit at least one. Yet, this junior before her seemed far too “clean.”
Originally, Gu Lingxi, blinded by beauty and superficiality, hadn’t cared about these matters. But now that everything was being dug up—see? What exactly was hidden beneath the skin of the saintess? Was it a demon, a mortal, or a supreme god?
Qiu Shuang smiled. She was curious now if people truly spoke the truth after drinking.
For the first time, Xin Zhu felt that time was passing far too slowly. She had waited for a long time, only to receive the drink order from the front.
Two people having a perfectly good dinner—why start drinking? If they drank too much, who would send whom back? Would they go to a hotel to book a room?
As Xin Zhu gathered the drinks according to the list to send them up, these questions raced through her mind. But at this moment, her only identity was that of a waitress; her job was simply to fulfill these duties.
Qiu Shuang didn’t want to drag things out and ordered high-concentration spirits directly. She had no desire to sit at a table and engage in long, rambling conversations. Strictly speaking, Qiu Shuang preferred to keep eating and drinking as two separate activities, but since they had collided, she could only make do for now.
Gu Lingxi said nothing regarding Qiu Shuang’s boldness. She considered her own tolerance to be decent, having drunk plenty back in her days of “fooling around.” She was now very much looking forward to seeing Qiu Shuang in a drunken state, or perhaps seeing something else entirely.
After all, in popular perception, a “good girl” is seemingly never associated with alcohol or cigarettes. Yet at this moment, Gu Lingxi finally caught a glimpse of a corner beneath Qiu Shuang’s empty shell.
Qiu Shuang was not a so-called “good student,” nor was she a flower of chastity, nor merely a gentle and useless beautiful facade. She was a sharp sword, a pair of eyes that could not be refused, revealing occasional moments of madness and tenacity, and a secret hidden within her core that could never be glimpsed.
Perhaps she was waiting for someone to completely open that door and see the secrets inside; perhaps she would keep it locked forever. But none of that mattered anymore.
Gu Lingxi waited for the final declaration. Regardless of where their ending led, at least for this moment, she briefly embraced and possessed a fragment of the real person.
When Xin Zhu pushed open the door, she saw the two of them sitting there with a strange vibe. She looked up and glanced at Qiu Shuang; for some reason, at that moment, she felt the other person seemed somewhat like a stranger.
But the feeling lasted only a split second. Instantly, Qiu Shuang seemed to return to the person Xin Zhu knew well.
“Thank you, Junior.”
Qiu Shuang nodded in thanks and then handed the drink to Gu Lingxi. Gu Lingxi said nothing about the other’s instantaneous shift.
The two just drank in silence without saying a word. Seeing this, Xin Zhu roughly knew what was going on. Under these circumstances, there was no use for her to stay, so she nodded and turned to leave. However, the moment she left, Xin Zhu clenched her fists.
She hated this sense of losing control most of all—the feeling that, no matter what, she couldn’t seem to win against others. This inexplicable competitive urge had distorted the first half of her life and was set to ruin the second half.
But a car that has long since veered off the tracks in madness will not willingly return to the original path. It simply rushes forward blindly. Perhaps it will encounter a distant mountain and be obliterated, or perhaps it will drive into the sea and sink forever; but at this moment, it doesn’t care about any of that—it just keeps driving forward.
The more Qiu Shuang drank, the happier she became. She knew that the alcohol was stimulating a massive release of dopamine. Even Gu Lingxi, sitting across from her, seemed a bit more pleasing to the eye—at least she didn’t feel the urge to beat her to death like before.
Gu Lingxi watched as a flush of peach-pink stained Qiu Shuang’s fair face, making her look even more “delicious.” Gu Lingxi stared into Qiu Shuang’s eyes, hoping to see confusion or a loss of focus.
Yet, they remained calm, or rather, contained a hint of a smile. Gu Lingxi felt a surge of anticipation—was this smile because of her, or was it simply the joy of the alcohol?
“I’m going to settle the bill, Senior.”
Qiu Shuang could feel herself reaching a delicate threshold, as if one more drop would make her completely drunk, while any less wouldn’t achieve this sensation.
She loved this ethereal feeling—her mood was joyous, and her mind was clear. However, perhaps due to the stimulation of the alcohol and her active brain, Qiu Shuang couldn’t help but want to talk a bit more. For instance, she wanted to ask what exactly was in the other person’s head and what schemes she was harboring.
But in the end, she just pursed her lips. In this state, even if she probed, it would only result in a joke. Who knew if the person sitting across from her was clear-headed? If they took her nonsense seriously, that would be truly interesting.
Gu Lingxi nodded. If she drank any more, she really might black out. She could only nod with a modicum of dignity, inwardly marveling at the strength of the other’s tolerance.
Qiu Shuang felt that the other was becoming somewhat unresponsive. After paying the bill, she rushed back. After a moment of thought, she propped the other woman up and walked out. Gu Lingxi wasn’t too heavy; to look good in clothes and because of her recent “peacocking,” she had been quite strict with herself.
Qiu Shuang suspected that the person she was supporting wasn’t a human, but a human-shaped piece of paper. At this moment, Gu Lingxi still had a tiny bit of conscious will, so she was very submissive and followed the other into the car.
After being hit by the wind, Qiu Shuang felt her buzzing brain cool down a bit. She looked out the window, thought for a moment, and decided to take her to a hotel.
Was it more efficient to take an elevator back to a hotel room, or more efficient to take her to a dormitory building that Qiu Shuang didn’t even know the location of, necessitating a search? She had already made her calculation.
Qiu Shuang didn’t want to talk to a drunk, much less struggle to communicate and try to pry the address out of her mouth; that sounded like a nightmare.
Her only current regret was that perhaps she should have asked where the other lived beforehand, or asked about her tolerance, so it wouldn’t have reached this state.
Fortunately, the dormitory curfews weren’t too strict right now. Staying a night off-campus wasn’t a major issue.
Moreover, since Qiu Shuang had brought her out, she had to bring her back safely. If anything happened in between, no one could take responsibility.
Gu Lingxi opened her eyes to see Qiu Shuang swiping a room card to open a door. She didn’t know what she should be thinking. This was what Gu Lingxi had always looked forward to, yet it was happening so inexplicably.
To be honest, the feeling was a bit strange. Based on what Gu Lingxi knew or guessed, the other shouldn’t be this kind of person. This sort of behavior was usually her own style.
Gu Lingxi felt that the probability of Qiu Shuang luring her out to harvest her organs was higher than the probability of a one-night stand.
“Senior, are you sober now? We are in a hotel. I will stay here with you for the night. If you feel anything strange, you can call me.”
Qiu Shuang looked at her, then took off her shoes and coat, tossed her onto the bed, and covered her with a quilt.
Gu Lingxi looked truly drunk. Qiu Shuang debated for a long time—not letting the other wash up seemed unethical, but washing her seemed too cruel to herself.
Ultimately, Qiu Shuang decided: she would wake the other up, let her go to the bathroom herself, and then let her sleep. That felt like a better approach.
Gu Lingxi was actually somewhat conscious. After Qiu Shuang called her several times, she finally stood up. Seeing this, Qiu Shuang followed behind her, watching Gu Lingxi’s every move.
Qiu Shuang was terrified the other would fall, resulting in another headline—like a “Hotel Bathroom Murder Mystery.”
“Are you done, Senior?”
“Mhm…”
Gu Lingxi’s voice came from inside the bathroom. Qiu Shuang watched as the other acted outwardly sober while her soul seemed to have left her body, but she said nothing, as she felt she was about to reach her own breaking point.
Finally, everything was over. Qiu Shuang closed her eyes, prepared to fall into a peaceful sleep. Then, she felt something sit down on the edge of her bed.
She had still been feeling a bit tipsy, but now she was truly jolted awake by the other’s antics. Just as Qiu Shuang was thinking that the other was indeed very cunning and must be faking being drunk, she heard the words from Gu Lingxi’s mouth.
“Qiu Shuang… do you really hate me that much?”
