- Chapter 10 - Leaving, Perhaps Separation is for a Better Reunion
Chen Jining wasn’t sure, deciding to leave everything to time or perhaps let fate take its course.
If the other person was still single after she returned from Germany, Chen Jining thought she would definitely pursue them, but that was a matter for the future. At least for now, in her eyes, nothing could sway her plans.
The time that followed was both a little painful and a little joyful for Qiu Shuang.
Her life began to return to calm and normalcy, seemingly without incident, except for the occasional pressure and forced studying from her senior.
“Qiu Shuang, I’m leaving here. Our agreement ends here. Thank you for your help during this time. At least with you here, that harassing junior won’t come again. Thank you.”
“Okay.”
Chen Jining looked at the slightly dejected Qiu Shuang and said nothing. If she talked to her any further, she was afraid she would soften and stay.
“After the new semester starts, you’ll be assigned a new roommate. I don’t know who they are, but if they’re not easy to get along with, remember to contact me anytime.”
“Okay.”
Watching the other person leave, Qiu Shuang sighed. She hoped her next roommate would be easy to get along with. She felt a bit of pity about Chen Jining’s departure; after a year of getting along, she had genuinely come to regard her as a friend. But it seemed the world was always this way.
Nothing is permanent.
It wasn’t until the summer rain stopped that the new semester arrived again.
Qiu Shuang was honorably a second-year student and welcomed her new roommate.
“Hello, Senior, I’m Qi Sijiao.”
Qi Sijiao’s arrival was on a rare rainy day in autumn. Qiu Shuang hadn’t expected her to arrive so late. She later found out she was a freshman.
Qi Sijiao didn’t know what her other roommate was like and had no particular preconceptions or opinions about her future roommate.
As long as they could tolerate each other.
With this mindset, Qi Sijiao pushed her luggage and opened the door. She wasn’t sure what kind of temperament this strange roommate had. If it was someone troublesome, she might have to show them who’s boss, as someone who also wanted special attention probably wouldn’t have terrible conditions.
Then, when she looked up, she saw Qiu Shuang standing there, reading a book.
Both were a little surprised to see each other. Qiu Shuang looked at the other person’s overly bold outfit and multi-colored hair, while Qi Sijiao stared intently at Qiu Shuang, who looked so well-behaved.
What a darling little treasure, exactly to her liking.
Qi Sijiao knew she had a bit of a problem, but in her eyes, it wasn’t a flaw. No one dislikes a pretty person. She looked at the other person’s pretty face and the exposed fair skin, and couldn’t help but smile.
So cute, she’s perfect to be her wife.
“Hello, I’m Qi Sijiao…”
At this moment, Qiu Shuang had no idea what the non-mainstream girl in front of her was thinking. She was puzzled by the multi-colored hair and tall physique. Art student? Sports student?
“Hello, Senior, I’m from the School of Economics and Management.”
Upon hearing this, Qiu Shuang was a little shocked. She had genuinely thought the other person was a sports student. But at least from the outside, this non-mainstream shamate girl seemed to be clean, so that wasn’t a problem. The adjustment with the new roommate wasn’t as terrifying as Qiu Shuang had imagined.
It was just that she kept feeling a bit tired lately or maybe she wasn’t sleeping well.
However, the initial period of getting along made Qiu Shuang breathe a sigh of relief.
The other person seemed normal and had no bad habits. It was only because she went to sleep early every day that she didn’t see the bright eyes of Qi Sijiao on the opposite bed staring directly at her.
Qiu Shuang hated the heat, hated the feeling of sweat soaking her body. Fortunately, the hottest time was over, so she only needed to wear a thin nightgown.
Qiu Shuang scrutinized herself in the mirror. She rarely looked at herself like this. To be honest, it was thanks to Song Ya that she could even wear such a high-end nightgown.
The white silk nightdress made the girl’s skin look even fairer, with two thin straps resting on her snow-white shoulders.
Qiu Shuang picked up the edges of the skirt and twirled. She thought she should be pretty, right? At least she had received many love letters in school, although the price for those letters was being returned or torn up by Song Ya on the spot.
In this regard, Qiu Shuang was very grateful to Song Ya for helping her fend off those annoying flies. But there was nothing to praise, it was just the hunter’s possessiveness over her prey.
Qiu Shuang sighed, hoping it wouldn’t be too hot tonight. She didn’t use a blanket, just turned over and rode on top of it, drifting off to sleep.
What Qi Sijiao saw was the girl lying sideways on the bed, her graceful curves and exposed fair, long legs, snow-white skin, and beautiful collarbone.
She really wanted to kiss them, to…
“Senior, you’re so white.”
Muddle-headed, Qiu Shuang turned over and looked at the younger girl, who was inexplicably sitting on her bedside. To be honest, it was quite frightening. An ordinary person would have screamed, but Qiu Shuang, who was accustomed to such situations, just turned away.
Her relationship with the other person was decent; at least the other person had no bad habits. Incidents like tonight weren’t the first time. The other person’s occasional verbal teasing made Qiu Shuang feel a bit repulsed, but she didn’t say anything. After all, young people nowadays could casually call anyone husband or wife online.
Qiu Shuang wasn’t willing to consider the possibility of that kind of attraction, as that would be too narcissistic.
Qiu Shuang closed her eyes, but after a while, she still felt the person beside her hadn’t left. She opened her eyes and directed a soul-searching question at the other person.
“Qi Sijiao, what are you doing?”
Qi Sijiao remained sitting there, saying nothing. Qiu Shuang started to consider the possibility of her sleepwalking. She slowly moved her hand toward the pad inside the bed.
There was a folding knife there. She had almost forgotten the last time she had tightly gripped the knife.
She pushed the other person.
“Move away, it’s hot.”
However, Qi Sijiao was unconcerned and even lay directly on Qiu Shuang’s bed.
Qiu Shuang was a little impatient. She tried to push the other person, but the other person was immobile.
“Get away from me. Are you sleepwalking?”
Qi Sijiao looked down at Qiu Shuang. Tall people always see more than others. She finally spoke, but the words were not what Qiu Shuang wanted to hear.
“Wow, Senior is actually pink…”
Realizing what the other person had been looking down at, Qiu Shuang immediately punched her.
Qi Sijiao hadn’t expected her seemingly adorable “wife” to have such great strength. The punch knocked her straight onto the floor.
“Please be respectful, Junior. If there’s a next time, it won’t just be a punch.”
Qi Sijiao, looking down, didn’t see the object tightly gripped in Qiu Shuang’s right hand under the blanket, nor her icy gaze.
Qi Sijiao, on the floor, was still a little dazed. She looked at the other person. Sure enough, a good-natured person is a good-natured person. She had already “figured out” Qiu Shuang’s temper during her time here. The other person was truly very easygoing.
“You should have slapped me, Senior…”
“Hitting someone’s face is a very impolite act.”
“Okay, thank you, Senior…”
Qi Sijiao turned and left, climbing back into her own bed. She was still savoring the feeling in her slightly aching arm. Damn it, why didn’t Senior slap her!
If it had been a slap, Qi Sijiao couldn’t imagine how ecstatic she would have been.
Qiu Shuang didn’t know the other person’s inner thoughts, or she would surely have sat up and beaten her. Damn it, why are there so many perverts in the world?
This semester seemed uneventful until a phone call shattered Qiu Shuang’s calm life.
When Chen Wanjun found out that Chen Jining had gone abroad to study, she almost set off fireworks. However, her initial happiness about this matter was chilled to the core by Qiu Shuang’s new roommate.
This Qi Sijiao, based on her appearance, was no good, and reportedly wasn’t anything good in her previous school either. This news was kindly provided by her classmate, Xin Zhu, from the same major.
“Shuangshuang, I’m downstairs. I miss you so much.”
Hearing the voice on the other end of the phone, Qiu Shuang only felt irritated. She decreed that no one, whether she liked or disliked them, even the person she liked the most, should call her when she was lying down.
Qiu Shuang leaned out and saw the figure downstairs. The other person had lost a lot of weight.
“Go away, I don’t want to see you.”
“I’ll wait for you here.”
Hearing this, Qiu Shuang had no choice. She didn’t want to end up on the school’s “Confession Wall” again.
Grabbing a jacket and throwing it over herself, she went downstairs. Under the dim streetlights, Chen Wanjun saw the frail Qiu Shuang walk out.
The other person was always like this: too soft-hearted, too tolerant, too kind. That’s why Chen Wanjun could never let her go.
Qiu Shuang quickened her pace, and Chen Wanjun immediately chased after her.
“I need to tell you that I’m sorry. I used to think le (lesbianism) was an illness, but it’s really not. You know my family; with something like le, I couldn’t even imagine it. My father would definitely beat me to death.”
Hearing Chen Wanjun say this, even Qiu Shuang was silent. She knew what Chen Wanjun’s family was like: a cowardly, sick mother and a father who should have died sooner.
All of Chen Wanjun’s childhood memories were the sound of her mother’s crying and the blows that fell after she stepped in to stop them. She always thought she could do better.
In reality, her mother would never change because of her protection; she would only shift the conflict.
“Why aren’t you a boy? That way your father wouldn’t hit me.”
But why is this happening? I’m the one who stands by you.
Chen Wanjun could strive to be the best—she could have excellent grades, be filial, and be healthy—but she couldn’t accept that everything she did was ultimately defeated by so-called gender.
How could she accept that?
