- Chapter 5 - I Became the Goddess's Live-in Son-in-Law?? (Part V)
The next day, although Si Xuansu stayed home, she still couldn’t stop worrying about the army, so she took some time out to conduct a patrol. While she was away, Jiang Yiqing also found something to occupy herself with—the “treasure” the system had mentioned.
Jiang Yiqing was quite curious and wanted to dig up the treasure as soon as possible.
She returned to the flower garden and told Zhi Gui and the other maids that she had dropped an earring there. She asked them to help her look for it while she also squatted down to search.
Zhi Gui and the others tried to dissuade her, saying she could just watch from the side, but Jiang Yiqing insisted on searching, and they had no choice but to comply.
Jiang Yiqing used a garden trowel to turn over the soil. The soil in the garden was fine and free of impurities. After digging for half a day, she saw nothing but dirt.
However, Jiang Yiqing did not give up and kept digging. After an hour, Zhi Gui and the others were ready to call it quits.
“Young Master, what kind of earring is so important? It doesn’t matter if it’s lost; just let the Young Master Si Xuansu get you a new pair.”
The Young Master was extremely generous toward the servants, which gave maids like Zhi Gui and Zhi Li a more confident way of speaking. However, if they made a mistake, the Young Master would also become very strict. She was strict with herself and others, but her kindness toward the servants was genuine.
“The weather is getting hot. You all go aside and rest. I’ll look for a bit longer and then I’ll stop too,” Jiang Yiqing said without looking up, determined to get her hands on the treasure.
Seeing as nearly the entire flower garden had been overturned, she didn’t believe she couldn’t find that treasure. Even though she said that, how could the maids dare to slack off? They continued to stay by her side.
Suddenly, Jiang Yiqing unearthed a large object from the soil. She initially thought it was a rotting tree root, but the moment the object was lifted from the dirt, she seemed to see some writing.
Based on Jiang Yiqing’s experience, seeing text meant she had found a fragment.
She dug the object out of the ground, and sure enough, text appeared before her eyes: “Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng Fragment x1.”
Jiang Yiqing asked the system, “Is this the treasure you were talking about?”
The system was also shocked upon seeing it, its voice rising an octave: “It’s the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng! How could such a top-tier alchemy ingredient appear here?!”
Jiang Yiqing asked in confusion, “What is the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng? Is it a very rare natural treasure?”
“Of course it is!” the system said. “If you collect nine fragments, you can refine them into the ultimate alchemy grade ‘Nine-Star Underworld Ginseng.’ This is a treasure that even grandmaster alchemists dream of!”
“But there’s only one fragment now. Where am I supposed to find the other eight?” Jiang Yiqing said calmly, even after hearing the system’s explanation.
“…True,” the system replied.
Most natural treasures appeared in lands with auspicious Feng Shui or extremely dangerous regions; the probability of one appearing in the yard of a General’s Manor was only one in ten thousand. Finding one fragment was already incredibly lucky. With the host’s current mortal body, it was impossible to travel through secret realms to find natural treasures. Collecting all nine was practically impossible.
“However, even though it’s just one fragment, its value is immense,” the system added.
Jiang Yiqing thought to herself: A single scale from a Qilin is precious simply because it belongs to a Qilin. She understood the logic.
She entered the space and had the system open the mall. She discovered that one Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng fragment could be exchanged for 1,000 Star Coins. Considering a bottle of ‘Clear Fragrance Soul’ was only worth 16 Star Coins, this was essentially a windfall.
However, Jiang Yiqing didn’t sell it immediately. Instead, she asked, “Even though I can’t refine the Nine-Star Underworld Ginseng yet, a single fragment should still have some use, right?”
“Of course,” the system said. “This single fragment is more nourishing than any regular ginseng. You can tell the difference just by the name—Heavenly Ginseng versus Human Ginseng. If an ordinary person consumes a decoction made from this, it is guaranteed to cure their ailments.”
Hearing this, Jiang Yiqing’s mind raced. Her father-in-law, the General, was in poor health. According to him, his “condition was worsening by the day.” It seemed to be a chronic illness that was hard to treat. What if she used the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng to nourish his body? Would he get better?
“I want to give this fragment to my father-in-law to nourish his body,” Jiang Yiqing said.
The system paused, not expecting her to be so generous, but then nodded. “As you wish. You found it; you can dispose of it however you like.”
Having made up her mind, Jiang Yiqing let out a cry of surprise. Zhi Gui and the others turned to look at her in confusion.
“Zhi Gui, Zhi Li, look! This is a part of the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng!” Jiang Yiqing held the fragment in her palm, shouting in wonder at the object that looked like a freshly dug piece of burdock root.
Zhi Gui and the others gathered around her. They saw a thick piece of ginseng with very few root hairs. It was snow-white with several spots on it, clearly looking like no ordinary item.
“Young Master, you finally found it! What is this for?”
Jiang Yiqing said, “The Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng is one of the rarest medicinal herbs in the world. It replenishes essence, restores the pulse, and calms the spirit. It is most effective for chronic illnesses that are hard to cure. Truly—’This ginseng belongs only to the heavens; how often is it heard of in the mortal world?'”
“It sounds so powerful. I didn’t expect the Young Master to be so knowledgeable about medicinal herbs,” Zhi Li said, looking at Jiang Yiqing with admiration.
Jiang Yiqing was not good at handling praise. Being complimented like this made her feel embarrassed, so she said, “I just happened to read about it somewhere.” In truth, she had just memorized the description from the system mall.
“It’s just that the Young Master’s earring hasn’t been found yet…” Zhi Li seemed quite concerned about it.
Feeling guilty, Jiang Yiqing took the earring out of her pouch and said with a smile, “Look, what is this?”
“So you found it?!” Zhi Li was surprised.
“Mhm.” Jiang Yiqing nodded, guiltily looking away. Or rather, it was never lost to begin with.
Back in her room, Jiang Yiqing carefully stored the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng. Looking at the treasure in the box, she propped up her chin and sighed. She figured that if her father-in-law got better and could lead the troops, Xuansu wouldn’t have to work so hard.
“Why are you sighing?”
Hearing the voice, Jiang Yiqing turned around in surprise to see Si Xuansu walking in. She was still wearing her silver armor and looked incredibly heroic. Jiang Yiqing hurried over to help her remove the heavy shoulder plates.
“Thank you.” Once the shoulder plates were off, Si Xuansu quickly removed the rest of the suit and placed it on the wooden rack specifically for armor.
Underneath, she wore tight-fitting martial attire. In the bright sunlight, her perfect figure was fully revealed. Jiang Yiqing held her breath, unable to even blink.
Seeing her dazed expression, Si Xuansu found it a bit amusing. She patted Jiang Yiqing’s head and asked, “I asked why you were sighing.”
Jiang Yiqing snapped out of it and decided to tell her about the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng. “I just found a medicinal herb called Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng in the flower garden. I thought about how my father-in-law is in poor health, so I wanted to brew it into a decoction for him.”
After a brief pause, Si Xuansu said, “You are very thoughtful. So why the sigh?”
“Many people haven’t heard of the Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng. I was afraid the doctors wouldn’t believe me and wouldn’t let me give something of unknown origin to him,” Jiang Yiqing explained.
“Let me see,” Si Xuansu said.
Jiang Yiqing showed her the fragment in the box. Si Xuansu brought it to her nose and sniffed the scent. “It indeed has a very unique fragrance. Although I haven’t heard of this Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng either, this is likely a rare medicinal herb.”
Jiang Yiqing hadn’t expected her to believe her so easily. “Then I’ll brew it into a soup for father?”
Si Xuansu looked at her and smiled. “Yiqing, we are family now. With your intentions, let alone Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng, even a simple cup of jasmine tea would be drunk by my father with a smile.”
The General held military power, so anything he consumed had to be guaranteed safe. For Si Xuansu to say this meant she truly treated Jiang Yiqing as one of her own.
“That’s great!” Jiang Yiqing said. “If father’s health really improves, Xuansu, you won’t have to work so hard!”
Si Xuansu was stunned for a moment. No beautiful girl had ever told her she “worked hard” and then immediately taken action to help her. Si Xuansu felt that because she had spent so long in the military, she carried a killing intent that made it hard for people to get close. Being understood by Yiqing felt very heartwarming.
Jiang Yiqing was a woman of action. She spent the entire afternoon in the infirmary, personally decocting the medicine according to the system’s instructions.
Si Xuansu went to see her parents and told them that Yiqing wanted to show her filial piety, so the two elders were very much looking forward to it.
A few hours passed, and it was nearly dark by the time Jiang Yiqing finished brewing the medicine. Her face was flushed from the heat of the fire and steam. Her arm felt like it was going to break from waving the fan, and her back was so stiff she could barely stand up. Although her weak constitution was a factor, it was clear that brewing medicine was an exhausting task.
Jiang Yiqing poured the medicinal liquid into a small bowl, placed it on a tray, and carefully carried it toward Baiyang Courtyard.
When she arrived, the three of them had been waiting for a while. Seeing them all there made Jiang Yiqing a bit nervous, but she steadily placed the tray in front of her father-in-law.
“Father, this is the ginseng soup I brewed for you. I heard you weren’t feeling well, so I hope your condition improves after drinking this.”
“Yiqing, you are very thoughtful,” the General said with a kind smile.
Madam Si helped uncover the bowl, and an astonishing medicinal fragrance wafted out.
The three of them looked at each other in shock. The General’s Manor never lacked precious herbs, and the General had drunk many decoctions made from expensive ingredients to maintain his health, but this scent was clearly extraordinary.
The Nine-Star Heavenly Ginseng, which had looked quite plain before, released an incredible aroma after being boiled. This gave Jiang Yiqing a lot of confidence as she presented it.
However, safety was always paramount. Jiang Yiqing used an extra spoon to take a sip and said to the General, “I will test it for poison first.”
After Jiang Yiqing drank it and nothing happened, Zhi Li added, “This medicine was brewed by the Young Master personally. He never left the infirmary during the process, so how could anyone has poisoned it?”
Madam Si sighed and said to the General, “This child has gone to great lengths for you.”
Si Xuansu squeezed Jiang Yiqing’s hand and gave her an encouraging look.
Jiang Yiqing had only taken one sip, but she already felt her body become incredibly clear and her spirits lifted. She said clearly, “Father, the taste is quite palatable. Please try it while it’s hot.”
The General nodded at her appreciatively, picked up the bowl, took a sip, and paused. He looked at the three of them, his expression already appearing a bit more vigorous. Immediately after, he began to drink somewhat urgently, quickly finishing the entire bowl.
“How is it?” Si Xuansu asked.
“I feel great. I really should have let you mother and daughter have a taste as well.” The General looked at the empty bowl and shook his head; he couldn’t believe he had finished it so quickly. He had felt so comfortable while drinking it that he simply couldn’t stop until every drop was gone.
“We’re fine. What matters is your health, Father,” Si Xuansu said.
Madam Si added, “If your health improves from this, then Yiqing’s hard work wasn’t in vain.”
The General stood up and took a few steps. He felt that the previous heaviness in his body had completely vanished. Because he had handled heavy weapons for so long, he usually felt discomfort in his shoulders and arms whenever he lifted them. But now, as he moved his shoulders, he felt no pain at all.
He picked up two black iron hammers from the west wall—decorative pieces that weighed three hundred pounds. Madam Si was startled and stood up to stop him, only to hear him say:
“I feel like I’ve gone back twenty years in time.”
That single sentence left the mother and daughter stunned, while Jiang Yiqing looked at him with admiration. Those two hammers were clearly not light.
