- Chapter 47 - The Miao Maiden’s Childhood Betrothal (Part XVII)
The two walked back hand-in-hand. Along the way, Shui Mingsheng’s expression was so terrifying that passersby steered clear of them, and Jiang Yiqing did not look particularly happy either.
Finally returning to the dormitory, Shui Mingsheng turned around and locked the door the moment they entered. She then turned back, her eyes dark and heavy as she stared at Jiang Yiqing.
Jiang Yiqing actually felt a flicker of fear; she had never seen Shui Mingsheng like this before.
“Jiang Yiqing, you’ve never gone out for coffee alone with me. How could you go with her?”
“We did drink together. Before school started, we went to Starbucks together,” Jiang Yiqing said.
“…What you ordered back then wasn’t coffee.”
“You’re being unreasonable.”
“No, I won’t allow it,” Shui Mingsheng said. “If I had known it would be like this, I should have tied you to my side so you couldn’t go anywhere.”
“Shui Mingsheng, you’ve finally spoken your true thoughts. You don’t want to see me living a life outside at all. Why do you pretend to be so generous?”
Shui Mingsheng’s heart began to ache. She felt the Love Gu making her heart throb, but perhaps her heart was simply that painful on its own—so easily manipulated by a single person.
“You found out,” Shui Mingsheng stated, her voice a declaration rather than a question.
Jiang Yiqing also felt her words had been a bit harsh. She said, “…Mingsheng, I didn’t mean it.”
Shui Mingsheng took her hand and said, “This is our Shui family’s Listening Sound Gu. It can track the movements of anyone whose voice it hears; its functions can even rival the Spirit Snake Gu. But to you, it’s just a bracelet—and a bad thing used by me to monitor you, right?”
When Shui Mingsheng gave her this jade bracelet, she had hesitated over whether to tell Yiqing the truth. She feared Yiqing would mind, yet she wanted to ensure her safety. Even in places where she couldn’t see her, she wanted to know Yiqing’s every move.
“I didn’t say it was bad. Why didn’t you tell me in advance?”
“If I had told you, would you have agreed?”
“…” No. Jiang Yiqing believed that no matter how much two people loved each other, they should still grant each other the space for personal freedom.
“See? That’s why I didn’t say anything.”
“So, you are eavesdropping on me?” Jiang Yiqing asked. “Shui Mingsheng, if we weren’t married, you would already be breaking the law.”
“Breaking the law?” Shui Mingsheng grew a bit angry. “So you’ve started studying the law now? I’ve broken more than one. I didn’t take a car to get here from the Miao territory; I came directly. Well then, Officer Jiang, are you going to arrest me?”
Jiang Yiqing fell silent. She should have expected this. By going out with Zhao Xiran to force Shui Mingsheng to show herself, she knew she would come immediately, but she hadn’t considered the impact this action would have on her.
“Look, you must be laughing at me—this woman, using a Teleportation Gu just to get here, she must be crazy, right? ‘I can’t stand this suffocating love.’ We’ve only been together for how long, and you already can’t stand it…” Shui Mingsheng gave a bitter laugh. “Clearly, the one who can’t stand it is me.”
Shui Mingsheng simply could not endure separation. Having planted the Love Gu, yet being separated from her—she was the world’s biggest fool, willing to subject herself to a slow execution.
It was very quiet. Feeling uneasy, Shui Mingsheng spoke again: “Worrying for you, missing you constantly, unable to sleep—am I the only one like this?”
“I said I would go back on weekends,” Jiang Yiqing said. “And I am an adult; I can protect myself.”
“Yiqing, are you still going to argue with me?” Shui Mingsheng took a step forward. Jiang Yiqing had never seen her look so dangerous.
Jiang Yiqing took a step back, but Shui Mingsheng kept advancing until she forced Jiang Yiqing against the edge of the bed. Jiang Yiqing suddenly sat down on the mattress, and Shui Mingsheng leaned over her. What reached the depths of her heart even before anger was longing.
She kissed her frantically, drinking in her soft lips, her hands wandering over the body she had dreamed of day and night. A voice in her mind told her—Yes, this is exactly what you want to do. This is what you desire.
Crazy. She had truly gone crazy.
Jiang Yiqing tried to get some air, but she forgot how to breathe, allowing herself to fall back onto the bed. Everywhere she looked, there was only Shui Mingsheng’s shadow.
One of her hands tried to push her away, but Shui Mingsheng was only wearing a shirt. The touch felt like a provocation instead, causing Shui Mingsheng to leave marks upon her body even more wildly.
When Jiang Yiqing realized where she was leaving those marks, she cried out: “You’re crazy! I have class tomorrow!”
“Then go to class,” Shui Mingsheng said. “Let everyone know who is possessing you, Jiang Yiqing!”
Jiang Yiqing trembled with rage. Unable to restrain herself, she slapped Shui Mingsheng across the face. As the crisp sound echoed in the narrow space, both of them froze, staring at each other.
“You’re too much!” Jiang Yiqing accused. “It’s not like I asked you to plant that Love Gu!”
She tried to use her voice to hide her internal wavering. She was not the kind of person to do such a thing; how could she hurt the person she loved most?
“…I’m, I’m sorry, Yiqing.” Shui Mingsheng covered her face in self-reproach. She felt that something had truly gone wrong with her. She had feverishly planted the Love Gu for her beloved, but even she hadn’t anticipated that the Love Gu would make a person so delirious.
Or perhaps, she knew she was this delirious and merely used the Love Gu to mask her true desires.
“…Yiqing, you don’t hate me, do you?” Shui Mingsheng suddenly looked up at Jiang Yiqing, terrified of seeing a look of loathing in her eyes.
Having calmed down, Jiang Yiqing also began to reflect on her own faults. She had been so busy that she hadn’t stood in Shui Mingsheng’s shoes to think for her. For Shui Mingsheng, who had the Love Gu inside her, the pain of their separation would be ten times, even a hundred times worse than her own.
She enjoyed her feverish, devoted love, yet claimed she couldn’t tolerate her excessive possessiveness. No, that wasn’t right. She loved Shui Mingsheng, so she loved all of her.
Thinking this way, her anger vanished completely.
Jiang Yiqing touched her reddened cheek and looked into her panicked eyes. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have hit you. I’m the bad one.”
Shui Mingsheng let out a laugh, grabbed her hand, and said, “It doesn’t even hurt.”
Jiang Yiqing poured a glass of water for Shui Mingsheng to drink.
“…Not angry anymore?”
“What is there left to be angry about?” Jiang Yiqing said. “You just came here like that; nothing will happen to you, will it?”
“Don’t worry. They call it a ‘rule,’ but it’s not like everyone follows it.”
Jiang Yiqing touched the red spot on her arm where the Love Gu was planted and asked, “Does it still hurt here?”
Shui Mingsheng placed her hand over her own heart and said, “You should ask about here.”
“Does it hurt?” Jiang Yiqing asked.
“Much better.” Shui Mingsheng tilted her face and said, “If you kiss me once more, it will be all better.”
Jiang Yiqing kissed her cheek again and asked, “Is it time to give the Love Gu more nourishment?”
“Then, is tonight, okay?” Shui Mingsheng smiled mischievously. “Yiqing, you feed it, and I’ll feed you.”
“…Okay.”
“If you don’t like this bracelet, you can take it off,” Shui Mingsheng added.
“Wasn’t this a gift for me? You want to take it back already?”
“Then it’s a promise. You aren’t allowed to take the bracelet off even when you bathe.”
“What are you thinking?” Jiang Yiqing tapped her forehead. “Didn’t all that greenery in the Miao territory purify your thoughts?”
“They can’t be purified. I’ll only get crazier.” Shui Mingsheng asked seriously, “Yiqing, will you hate me like this?”
Jiang Yiqing toyed with a lock of Shui Mingsheng’s hair and said, “We’re two of a kind; that’s why we’re a family.”
Shui Mingsheng began to kiss her fingers, her gaze lingering and tender.
Jiang Yiqing looked into her eyes and said, “Don’t come to see me with dark circles under your eyes in the future; it breaks my heart. Tomorrow, I’ll give you a tour of the school, okay?”
Hearing that she could tour the school, Shui Mingsheng became interested. She wanted to see with her own eyes where Yiqing studied, since she would be staying here for a long time.
The next day, Jiang Yiqing acted as a little tour guide, taking Shui Mingsheng to various parts of the campus.
When they arrived at the door of the piano room, they both heard a beautiful piano melody.
They stopped to listen, making no sound, because they had heard this song before—at their wedding.
“Please come in,” a female voice said as the piece ended.
The two entered hand-in-hand and saw the teacher from the piano club sitting there, smiling at them.
On the floor of the piano room, the steps of the waltz were engraved. The curtains drifted with the wind, and the early autumn sunlight shone in, warm and bright.
The piano music began once again.
Shui Mingsheng whispered into Yiqing’s ear: “Yiqing, you like the piano, right? Our home will have a piano soon too. You can play whenever you want.”
Jiang Yiqing felt a warmth in her heart and said, “Mingsheng, let’s dance.”
Shui Mingsheng understood immediately. For a Miao maiden, dancing the waltz was a simple task.
“Okay.”
Jiang Yiqing had rehearsed in her mind many times what it would be like to waltz with Shui Mingsheng. To this day, she still remembered how Shui Mingsheng looked when they first danced together.
To the light rhythm of the moving piano music, the two held hands and began to dance. With white skirts fluttering and soft, smiling faces, they moved with light taps of their toes. The restlessness in their hearts was soothed by the music, becoming light and airy.
“Yiqing,” Shui Mingsheng said.
“What is it?”
“I love you.”
As their bodies pressed close, Shui Mingsheng tilted her head slightly and pressed a kiss near her ear.
Jiang Yiqing’s whole body shuddered, and her steps faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained the rhythm.
Jiang Yiqing looked at her with a stubborn gaze, seemingly warning her not to launch any more sneak attacks, but Shui Mingsheng simply pressed another kiss into her hair.
Jiang Yiqing’s heart was full of throbbing excitement, and her legs felt weak.
Her body leaned heavily against Shui Mingsheng, like a climbing plant—like a trumpet creeper—that would die if it left its support. They existed in such a symbiotic relationship.
“Do you love me?” Shui Mingsheng asked in Jiang Yiqing’s ear. Her ears were her weak point; whenever Shui Mingsheng did this, Jiang Yiqing’s body only grew softer.
“…Don’t,” Jiang Yiqing said, her words contradicting her feelings.
The waist in her palm was trembling. Shui Mingsheng smiled. “Don’t lie to me. You clearly want this.”
“…I love you.”
“Say it louder.” Shui Mingsheng continued in an alluring voice. “You know what I want to hear.”
Shui Mingsheng’s eyes seemed to fill with a misty dampness, like the arrival of the rainy season. Having not seen Shui Mingsheng for so long, she had actually missed her terribly; burying herself in books was only a way to distract herself.
Jiang Yiqing moaned softly, saying intermittently: “Jiang… Yiqing… loves… Shui Mingsheng…”
Shui Mingsheng’s voice seemed to penetrate deep into her mind, making Jiang Yiqing’s head feel tingly and numb.
“Good girl, you deserve a reward. Come back to see me this weekend.”
The two thanked the teacher and left the piano room, sitting down on a bench next to a massive banyan tree. Whenever she saw this great banyan, Jiang Yiqing would think of the thousands of miles of mountains and green forests in the Miao territory. That was why she often came here when she had nothing to do.
Jiang Yiqing wanted to drop everything right now and follow Shui Mingsheng back to the Miao lands. But she had many obligations and responsibilities she had to uphold; she couldn’t do it.
Jiang Yiqing forcibly pulled back her string of logic, took a deep breath, and said, “I’m going to punish you.”
“Punish me for what?” Shui Mingsheng asked.
“For making me unable to focus on my studies.”
