- Chapter 46 - The Miao Maiden’s Childhood Betrothal (Part XVI)
“Yiqing, what should I do? I don’t want to leave anymore. I’m afraid you’ll be swindled away by some future female doctor.” Shui Mingsheng said. She was originally scheduled to leave N City today, and her ticket was already bought, but she was feeling reluctant to part.
Would it really be another month before she saw Yiqing again?
“I’m also going to become a female doctor. Does that mean you were swindled away by me?” Jiang Yiqing asked with a smile.
Shui Mingsheng always felt that she was the one who had brought Jiang Yiqing to a place like the Miao Frontier—a place that seemed exceptionally cruel compared to ordinary society. Because of this, she felt a bit guilty and could only redouble her efforts to be good to her. She took Jiang Yiqing’s hand and said, “…Then in the future, when Yiqing needs to practice injections and acupuncture, just use me for practice. I’m not afraid of pain.”
“Truly?” Jiang Yiqing asked with a hum of laughter.
Shui Mingsheng’s heart gave a little jolt, but her face remained calm as she said, “Of course. I am the greatest Gu Master of the surrounding ten miles and eight villages, and also the most renowned wife-pamperer in the Miao Frontier. To complete Yiqing’s great medical career, fear does not exist.”
Jiang Yiqing gave her a light kiss on the lips and said, “Alright, I understand.”
Shui Mingsheng’s heart began to flutter, making her want to stay even more. “How about I change the ticket? I really don’t want to go today.”
Jiang Yiqing had no choice but to say, “You should still go back. I’ll go find you this weekend, okay?”
“So soon?” Shui Mingsheng’s eyes lit up instantly. “Is it because of that system of yours, Yiqing?”
“Yes.”
“That’s wonderful!” Shui Mingsheng said. “Then it’s a promise. You must come back.”
Jiang Yiqing nodded.
“Okay, it’s a deal. Then I’ll head back first.”
Shui Mingsheng turned her head back three times for every step she took. Her deep reluctance made Jiang Yiqing’s heart ache as well; after all, it wasn’t easy for the two of them to be forced apart so soon after their marriage.
Fortunately, she had the system to help her. If she didn’t, Jiang Yiqing didn’t know how she would endure the torment of a long-distance relationship.
The next day, Jiang Yiqing began her journey of learning. To integrate into the university classrooms, she listened with exceptional focus. After class, she would proactively seek out the professors to ask about confusing points.
Sometimes the teachers found it strange; the questions Jiang Yiqing asked were occasionally very ingenious, yet at other times overly basic. However, since the student asked, they shared everything they knew.
To be honest, students as studious as Jiang Yiqing were rare these days. Even in a medical school where almost everyone worked hard, she was considered one of the most diligent.
After class, she would go to the study rooms and the library to continue her studies. Every morning, she left the dormitory, and she wouldn’t return until it was time for the doors to be locked at night.
Typical freshmen were more interested in clubs, class committees, and socializing, but Jiang Yiqing was only interested in studying. Consequently, she appeared quite isolated.
Her only acquaintance remained her roommate, whom she had met before the term started: Zhao Xiran.
“Jiang Yiqing, just how strict is your family upbringing? You’re already in university, and you don’t relax even a little bit, do you?” Zhao Xiran saw her busy every day. Being a completely different type of person, Zhao Xiran felt like she was being driven crazy by these overachievers; they truly had zero common ground.
Jiang Yiqing glanced at her and said, “What does it have to do with you?”
Zhao Xiran instantly got fired up. She threw an arm around Jiang Yiqing’s shoulder and said, “Beautiful girl, don’t be so old-fashioned. Do you know how many people have asked me for your contact information these past few days?”
“Aren’t I already married?” Jiang Yiqing didn’t even look up, continuing to read her book and take notes. “Is everyone really that bored, insisting on provoking a married person?”
After saying this, she didn’t forget to shrug her shoulder, shaking off Zhao Xiran’s hand.
Zhao Xiran felt a bit awkward. As a “Top Tier Choice” in the lesbian circle, she was usually the one rejecting others; she had never been rejected by someone else. She was suddenly filled with a fighting spirit and said, “If you won’t make a date with others, can you make a date with me?”
“Zhao Xiran, is there something wrong with your brain? I have a wife, didn’t you see her?” Jiang Yiqing said. “Mingsheng spoke to you politely; it’s not good for you to act like this behind her back, is it?”
Zhao Xiran raised both hands in surrender. She just wanted to see if the relationship between the two was really that good, and the facts proved she was dead wrong.
“Fine, fine, fine, let’s just be friends. Is that okay now?” Zhao Xiran gave a brilliant smile and said, “It’ll just give your wife a little more sense of vigilance; it might even enhance your relationship.”
“Are you talking about being friends?” As Jiang Yiqing spoke, she stopped writing and looked up at her. That bright, piercing gaze seemed as if it were about to poke right into the depths of Zhao Xiran’s heart.
Zhao Xiran felt a chill in her heart, knowing she had encountered a master who was not easily fooled. She felt as though the thoughts in her mind were being seen through. However, she had her own reasons for acting this way: “It’s really just friends. I’ll take you out for coffee to enhance the friendship between us. Do you think that’s feasible, Eldest Young Lady?”
Jiang Yiqing looked down at the jade bracelet on her wrist and smiled. That look of confident certainty made Zhao Xiran almost fall for her. She thought to herself that she didn’t know how her wife had tied her down so quickly; she really was a cut above.
“Fine.” Jiang Yiqing closed her book and stood up.
Zhao Xiran was still a bit stunned; she hadn’t expected her to actually agree. Thus, she said happily, “Then let’s go, Eldest Young Lady.”
As the two walked through the campus, they were a beautiful sight. Jiang Yiqing’s phone rang incessantly. When she opened it, she saw several girls private-messaging her, telling her that Zhao Xiran was a “scumbag” and warning her to stay away.
Jiang Yiqing found it boring and muted her phone. Then she deliberately ignored the 99+ unread messages in the pinned conversation at the top.
Initially, Jiang Yiqing had chatted with Shui Mingsheng as usual, but Shui Mingsheng was too wordy. Knowing she had just started school, she still kept sending messages. On the second day, Jiang Yiqing studied too late and fell asleep directly at her desk, forgetting to reply to Shui Mingsheng. When she woke up, the system notified her that the bracelet on her wrist was monitoring her. Jiang Yiqing was furious and never replied to Shui Mingsheng’s messages again.
Jiang Yiqing followed Zhao Xiran to a cafe in the university town. The interior decoration was very elegant, and someone was playing the piano. Jiang Yiqing happened to have joined the piano club and was very interested in the instrument, so she listened to the song somewhat entranced.
She was a bit distracted as she followed Zhao Xiran to a seat. Zhao Xiran ordered a coffee for her at random, and it wasn’t until the piano music ended that she snapped back to her senses.
“Your coffee, please enjoy.” A pleasant voice sounded in her ear, and a cup of fragrant, mellow coffee was placed in front of Jiang Yiqing.
Jiang Yiqing turned her head and saw a shop employee wearing a black cartoon-striped apron standing beside her. She looked about the same age as them and had very delicate and lovely features.
“…Thank you,” Jiang Yiqing said quickly.
She sensed an unusual atmosphere between this girl and Zhao Xiran.
“Hey, where’s my coffee?” Zhao Xiran asked somewhat rudely.
“Yours?” The employee said. “I didn’t hear. Did you order coffee too?”
“Lu Yu, don’t go too far. I specifically brought my roommate here to support your business, and you’re not giving me any face at all, are you?” Zhao Xiran said.
She shouted so much that Lu Yu’s eyes began to tear up. Jiang Yiqing couldn’t stand Zhao Xiran’s bullying attitude. She pulled a hundred-yuan bill from her pocket, placed it on the table, and said, “I’m paying for my own. You don’t need to find change for the rest.”
Lu Yu didn’t think it was embarrassing to take a tip. She gave Jiang Yiqing a grateful look, whispered a thank you, picked up the money, and turned to leave.
“Lu Yu, stop right there and make things clear!” Zhao Xiran said.
“…Say what?” Lu Yu turned her back and asked in a muffled voice.
“I rented an apartment for you, but you won’t live in it. I give you living expenses, but you don’t want them. You plan to trample on yourself like this, don’t you?”
“How am I trampling on myself?” Lu Yu’s voice was full of confusion.
“The little money you earn makes you work yourself half to death; I really think it’s laughable. Studying that crappy major… you’d be better off coming to be my maid. Later, I’ll arrange for you to be my secretary, which would be a much better path. Have you seen reality clearly?”
“You can’t insult people like that.” Lu Yu felt like she was being scolded to the point of crying.
After Zhao Xiran said it, she regretted it too. Her mouth opened and closed; she didn’t know why she was so aggressive toward her. She glanced at Jiang Yiqing and suddenly said, “Lu Yu, you also know it’s impossible for me to be with you, right? So you want to make a scene with me. Even if I were to choose, in the future, it would definitely be someone like Yiqing. That would be a match between equal families. It’s impossible with a poor girl like you.”
“I’m married, do not disturb,” Jiang Yiqing said calmly as she took a sip of coffee.
Lu Yu, who had been hurt by Zhao Xiran’s words, burst out laughing upon hearing this. She said, “You should just give up. Even if you begged me, I wouldn’t want you. You think having a bit of money makes you great? Zhao Xiran, let me tell you, you’re no different from a pile of rotten mud on the ground. When I liked you back then, I was blind. If I had to choose, I’d also choose someone like Yiqing. She’s already married and won’t be unfaithful, unlike someone like you whose reputation is already trash and who has zero self-awareness. Are you worthy of Yiqing? You actually dare to talk big like that; it’s truly laughable.”
Zhao Xiran’s expression became very colorful.
She acted shamelessly: “I’m a customer! I want to drink coffee, make it for me quickly! Don’t you work here? Isn’t the customer God?”
Lu Yu ignored her completely, turned around, and left.
“Miss Zhao.” Jiang Yiqing was also amused by the sight. “You didn’t tell me you brought me here to watch a play. Should I pay a performance fee? After all, you’ve worked so hard.”
“Wow, Yiqing, I really didn’t see that your tongue could be so poisonous.” Zhao Xiran became a bit curious upon hearing this. “I really didn’t expect you to come out with me. Might I ask, what exactly made you make this decision?”
“You’ll have to ask her.” Jiang Yiqing turned her head to the other side.
While Zhao Xiran was still confused, she saw Shui Mingsheng walk in. Her face looked even worse than Zhao Xiran’s; she had dark circles under her eyes, looking like a panda—clearly a sign of insomnia and exhaustion.
“Yiqing, why didn’t you reply to my messages?” Shui Mingsheng asked.
“It’s not an online relationship; why is it mandatory to reply? I already said I’d go back this weekend,” Jiang Yiqing said.
“If I don’t see you for a day, I can’t even eat.” Shui Mingsheng tried to soften her tone, but seeing her sitting leisurely and chatting with another woman, the flames of nameless jealousy rushed straight to her heart. “Your appetite seems very good, though; you even have time to talk about everything under the sun with someone else.”
Zhao Xiran was laughing her head off, not expecting someone else to be as miserable as herself.
“Stay away from her,” Shui Mingsheng said, looking at the snickering Zhao Xiran. “Didn’t you say you live off-campus? Your class schedules are different, and your personalities are polar opposites. What are you two doing together?”
“She and I are friends,” Zhao Xiran said.
“No, I don’t agree,” Shui Mingsheng glared at Zhao Xiran and spoke.
Jiang Yiqing finished her coffee and decided to have a proper talk with Shui Mingsheng. She stood up and said, “Let’s go back and talk.”
Shui Mingsheng immediately stepped forward and grabbed Jiang Yiqing’s hand, gripping tighter and tighter. She leaned in to sniff her body, afraid she had caught the scent of another woman’s perfume.
Jiang Yiqing said, “You’re hurting me.”
Shui Mingsheng’s expression faltered for a moment, but she finally relaxed her grip a little.
