- Chapter 20 - I Became the Goddess's Live-in Son-in-Law?? (Part 20)
The next day, Si Xuansu, who had always been scrupulously dedicated to her duties, took a day off, handing over the task of training the troops to her subordinate, Qin Fei.
Jiang Yiqing didn’t know this yet. When she woke up in the morning, she discovered that Si Xuansu—who would usually have already left—was surprisingly still at home. Only then did she realize something was unusual.
Seeing her wake up, Si Xuansu said, “Yiqing, I’m taking you out for a stroll on the streets today. I’m afraid staying in the manor all the time will bore you to death.”
Jiang Yiqing hadn’t felt bored; in fact, she had gradually discovered that she didn’t really know what to do when she went out, so staying home felt more comfortable. However, if Si Xuansu was the one inviting her, the situation was entirely different.
For many things, as long as there is a companion by your side—and that person happens to be the one you love—the meaning becomes completely different.
Jiang Yiqing nodded happily. Their outing didn’t feel like much to her, but it once again caused a stir among the people of the capital.
Si Xuansu had performed martial arts before the Emperor at the age of four and had been hailed as a child prodigy since childhood. She rode upon a divine steed bestowed by the Emperor, traveling between the Imperial Palace and the General’s Manor. Whenever she moved out, was it ever with an entourage of fewer than a thousand people? Such scenes were grand and shocking; anyone born in the capital had seen them at least once.
Therefore, people of all age groups in the capital recognized her. Her level of public recognition could be described as extraordinary; even princes and marquises did not possess such fame.
“General, Son-in-law, you two are…?” a familiar neighbor greeted Si Xuansu.
“Uncle Wang, good morning. We are going for a turn around the streets,” Si Xuansu replied politely.
“A stroll is good, very good. Then I won’t disturb you two,” Uncle Wang said with a smile, waving his hand as he watched the two of them depart.
The horse strolled along the road. Wherever they passed, in the eyes of the commoners, the tall horse carried a pair of celestial lovers. It was a pleasing sight to behold; some were surprised, others were envious—in short, they attracted everyone’s gaze.
“Is it really okay for you not to go train the troops?” It was only after they were far from the General’s Manor that Jiang Yiqing remembered to ask.
Si Xuansu said, “I took a leave of absence. I’m spending the whole day with you today.”
Jiang Yiqing was slightly stunned. She hadn’t expected her to go this far for her sake, but she immediately smiled and said, “Alright then! I won’t be heading back home until it’s night.”
Si Xuansu looked at her dotingly. “Fine.”
First, Si Xuansu took her to the most famous morning tea house in the capital, “The Pavilion of Floating Life.” She ordered two pots of tea and a table full of pastries and breakfast dishes.
While waiting, Jiang Yiqing looked out the window. From the second floor, she took in the scenery of the capital and the bustling picture of horses and carriages on the streets.
However, she soon turned her head back to look at Si Xuansu. Si Xuansu looked back at her as well. Without needing to speak, simply gazing at each other allowed a sense of happiness to arise spontaneously.
Finally, plates of exquisite dishes were brought up. Amidst the fragrance of tea and the sound of zither music, the two had a comfortable morning.
After leaving the Pavilion of Floating Life, Si Xuansu took Jiang Yiqing to see the Pear Garden opera. Only after arriving did Jiang Yiqing realize that Si Xuansu had booked the entire Pear Garden; today, all the actors and musicians were serving only the two of them.
The manager of the Pear Garden placed the repertoire of plays into their hands, asking them to pick what they liked, and the actors and musicians would perform for them on the spot.
This kind of top-tier VIP treatment was something Jiang Yiqing had never even enjoyed in modern times; she couldn’t help but feel a bit lightheaded.
Si Xuansu said, “I didn’t know if you preferred watching plays or listening to music. If you like plays, I’ve heard Liu Ruyan is quite good, though I haven’t seen it myself. If it’s music, I highly recommend the Treading Song series.”
Jiang Yiqing selected Si Xuansu’s recommendations and then picked a few titles that looked interesting. After handing them to the manager, the performance began quickly.
First was the musical performance, followed by the play Liu Ruyan. It told the story of a woman from a scholarly family in the south who was sent to a girls’ school by her family. There, she met Liu Ruyan, who was two years older than her. Liu Ruyan was cold and aloof. Once, after being scolded by a teacher, Liu Ruyan stood alone under the rain porch; the woman held an umbrella to shield her from the rain. After that, the two were together every day; she taught Liu Ruyan how to handle affairs, and Liu Ruyan taught her how to play the zither, and affection gradually blossomed.
However, when the woman was sixteen, her family arranged an engagement for her. After she told Liu Ruyan about it, Liu Ruyan decided to elope with her to the ends of the earth. Their plan was leaked to the woman’s family, and she was placed under house arrest. On the wedding day, Liu Ruyan came to the door to snatch the bride. The woman attempted suicide by striking her head against a pillar but ultimately succeeded in resisting the marriage. They eventually withdrew into the mountain forests together and lived a happy life.
Jiang Yiqing watched with great intensity. Seeing her so absorbed, Si Xuansu did not disturb her. Instead, she spent most of the time looking at Jiang Yiqing. To her, this story was one she had commissioned herself, so she naturally knew what would happen.
However, the difference between life and drama is that one never knows what will happen on the road ahead.
After coming out of the Pear Garden, Si Xuansu asked Jiang Yiqing, “Did you enjoy watching it?”
“Liu Ruyan and her lover were so wonderful! How can there be such a great play?” Jiang Yiqing said. “Xuansu, we will definitely be like them—no, we will be even happier than that!”
Jiang Yiqing was incredibly happy, feeling that today was the peak of her life. No, since yesterday, she had been at the peak of her life.
“Xuansu, thank you for taking me to the Pear Garden. I love you so much.” After saying that, she gave her a kiss on the cheek. Even someone like Si Xuansu was caught a bit off guard.
Si Xuansu grabbed her waist right there on the street and leaned close to her ear. Her voice was low and soft, full of charm. Jiang Yiqing felt her ears go numb and her body tremble.
“You were the one who took the initiative first.”
She picked Jiang Yiqing up by the waist, lifted her onto the horse, and kissed the tender lips of the person in her arms. Jiang Yiqing was so shocked she couldn’t speak.
This was right on the street!
Si Xuansu circled one arm around her in front of her body and used the other hand to guide the horse. The horse quickly moved forward again, while Jiang Yiqing still hadn’t regained her senses.
It was only after a long time that she heard the tide-like sounds of gossip reaching her ears.
“Did you see that? General Si kissed Son-in-law Jiang so hard that her body went soft and she collapsed into her arms.”
