I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 64
Wen Yunqing and Lu Zhiming talked casually for half an hour. By the time she returned to the formation, the standing-at-attention exercise had concluded, and it was time for a rest period.
Unsurprisingly, Wen Yunqing received many glances from the Law Department female company upon her return. The vast majority were envious, and a few were curious.
“What did you go do? They said the supervisor took you away,” Wen Yimeng asked with concern.
Wen Yunqing glanced at the people around them and whispered, “The supervisor is Lu Zhiming. She asked me to discuss something and help her handle a case.”
“What kind of case? Is it one of those special cases?” The worry in Wen Yimeng’s eyes turned into curiosity.
Wen Yunqing nodded. “Ninety-nine percent likely. But we cannot yet determine the suspect, so we need to conduct some more conventional investigations first.”
Wen Yimeng: “If you go investigate a case, what about military training?”
Wen Yunqing smiled. “I’ll use the time in the evening, and I’ll still train with you during the day.”
Wen Yimeng frowned. “If you leave at night, won’t I have to sleep alone?”
Wen Yunqing put her hand on her girlfriend’s shoulder, helping her relax. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back before twelve o’clock. I just won’t participate in the evening activities.”
Before Wen Yimeng could ask what type of case it was, the instructor started blowing the whistle for assembly.
In this way, the company spent the entire afternoon on the single training item of standing at military attention. When the training ended and they lined up for dinner, most people were walking with a limp.
This was because their feet were simply too painful!
After having dinner with Wen Yimeng, Wen Yunqing returned to take a shower and change into some of the clothes she had brought, then went to knock on the door of Room 302.
“Come in,” Lu Zhiming said, holding some files. When she saw Wen Yunqing enter, she handed them all directly to her. “Read these first.”
Wen Yunqing surveyed Lu Zhiming’s quarters. Relaxed, she sat on the room’s sofa and quickly skimmed through the files. When she reached Gu Ling’s information, she slowed down.
“What about Gu Ling’s money?” Wen Yunqing asked. “She could save five thousand yuan a month; why is her current account balance zero?”
Lu Zhiming glanced at the files. “It was found yesterday. Two days before she disappeared, she withdrew the money from the bank and paid a deposit.”
“A deposit?” Wen Yunqing frowned. “A rent deposit?”
Lu Zhiming shook her head. “It was for a small shop front. The monthly rent is eighteen thousand yuan. She paid for three months, and the rest of the money was found in her rented room.”
“Take a look at this,” Lu Zhiming said, taking out a clear bag containing hair and handing it to Wen Yunqing. “Can you use them to track Gu Ling’s whereabouts?”
“Is the information on here accurate?” Wen Yunqing asked.
Lu Zhiming shook her head. “She is an orphan; her birthday was randomly filled in by the orphanage director, so there is quite a discrepancy.”
Thinking of the combined photo on her phone, Wen Yunqing let out a sigh. She stood up, picked up a pen, and quickly wrote a few lines on the back of the file. “These are the things I need. Once they are all gathered, I can start looking for the person.”
“You can really find her?” Lu Zhiming was surprised. “All you have to rely on are these few strands of hair.”
“Yes, I can,” Wen Yunqing flashed a confident smile. “The reason you were willing to recruit me exceptionally wasn’t because of my capabilities?”
Lu Zhiming rubbed her nose, scanning the list. “The Special Affairs Department has all of these items. I’ll make a call, and they should arrive by tomorrow morning.”
Wen Yunqing: “Good. I’ll come find you after breakfast.”
By the time she finished reading all the files, the hour hand was approaching ten. Wen Yunqing grabbed two bottles of juice from the small refrigerator before leaving.
It was inappropriate to go find Wen Yimeng to explain the situation, so she could only contact her via phone to inform her of her destination.
The instructor looked at the student neutrally and gave a response, “She wasn’t being lazy. Student Wen has her own matters to handle.”
“She has what to handle? Why can she deal with it for so long?” the student simply expressed her dissatisfaction completely. “We are training hard here, and are under quasi-military management. Why can Wen Yunqing come and go as she pleases? She disappeared for most of the first day and now isn’t even showing up for daytime training.”
“Is that your attitude toward your instructor? You only need to obey my command!” The instructor was truly annoyed now.
“I refuse to accept this!” the student stiffened her neck, convinced there was an unspeakable secret.
“If you refuse to obey, leave. We’re not short one person, nor too many with one more. If you leave, you are no longer under my command.”
Just as the atmosphere stalled, a passing supervisor noticed the situation here and walked over to inquire.
“Supervisor, our instructor is showing favoritism!” The student looked as if she had found a savior and began to complain to the supervisor.
“Showing favoritism?” The supervisor frowned. “What kind of favoritism?”
“Wen Yunqing from Class 1 didn’t come to military training, and the instructor is shielding her,” the student, named Yu Man, explained.
Hearing the name Wen Yunqing, the supervisor’s expression softened. “This involves confidential matters and indeed cannot be disclosed. Comrade Wen has important official duties to attend to; it is not the private matter you imagine.”
Yu Man had to low her head and return to the formation. Wen Yimeng glanced at Yu Man’s location, a hint of displeasure in her eyes. This fuss made everyone aware that Wen Yunqing’s identity was special, which would likely draw trouble to her.
…
Meanwhile, Wen Yunqing had received the materials she needed and immediately began drawing the array in Lu Zhiming’s dorm.
After past eighteen minutes, Wen Yunqing finished. “Give me Gu Ling’s hair.” She opened the evidence bag, took out the hair, placed it in the center of the array, and closed her eyes to feel the feedback.
“Open the map. With my front as due east, Gu Ling’s location is about 30° south of east, at a distance of approximately 56 kilometers,” Wen Yunqing opened her eyes, her tone solemn.
“There is an array nearby that blocks spiritual energy, so my result has an error margin of about five hundred meters. The array is telling me that Gu Ling’s life force is faint and won’t last much longer.”
“Faint life force? How much longer can she last?” Lu Zhiming’s brow furrowed.
“If we find the person tomorrow, she will only be a corpse,” Wen Yunqing stated, dismantling the array.
“Let’s go. I’ll go file the report, and we’ll head to the location you mentioned.” Lu Zhiming stood up. “Twenty minutes. Meet at the base gate?”
Wen Yunqing nodded. “You should bring some emergency medical supplies. I’m going to change.”
Around nine o’clock, the two met at the gate, and Lu Zhiming was very efficient, producing an SUV.
“Let’s go. I checked the navigation, and it will take about two hours, and that’s without traffic,” Lu Zhiming said.
Lu Zhiming compressed the two-hour journey into eighty minutes, pulling up near the expressway entrance.
“How is it? Can you sense the situation nearby?” Lu Zhiming slowed down.
“Turn left ahead,” Wen Yunqing said, holding Gu Ling’s hair and releasing her external senses. “Drive for about five hundred meters.”
“That’s enough. The feedback tells me we’re close to here. Let’s walk,” Wen Yunqing unfastened her seatbelt and stepped out, looking at the desolate scenery.
Lu Zhiming followed suit, then opened the trunk and pulled out two handguns. “Do you know how to use this?”
“Practitioners are still human. Once their whereabouts are found, hot weapons are sometimes very useful,” Lu Zhiming said, handing one over. “The first round is a blank. The rest are live ammunition. Try not to kill anyone.”
Wen Yunqing disassembled the magazine to count the rounds and then chambered a round. “Okay, you follow me.”
Wen Yunqing walked forward about two hundred meters before she sensed a special barrier blocking her perception.
“It’s likely in the small village over there,” Wen Yunqing said. “The other party might be hiding among ordinary people.”
“Living with people,” Lu Zhiming said. “Then be careful when shooting.”
“Young ladies, you look unfamiliar. What are you doing here?” Before entering the village, they ran into a local woman.
“We are students from Jing University. Our professor gave us a research topic that requires us to walk around this area and observe the lay of the land,” Wen Yunqing casually spun a reason. “Big sister, are there any unique geographical features nearby?”
“About one li behind our village, there’s a natural cave. Does that count?” the woman answered.
A natural cave. Wen Yunqing and Lu Zhiming exchanged glances.
“Have any outsiders been to your village lately?” Lu Zhiming asked.
“Before the New Year, someone claimed to be staying with relatives, but that family had already moved away, so he temporarily stayed on,” the woman said.
“Did he look like a student or a teacher?” Lu Zhiming pressed.
“I can’t remember clearly. I didn’t interact much with him. He wasn’t a young person, but he didn’t look like a teacher either.”
“Okay, thank you, Big Sister. We’ll go check out the cave you mentioned.” Lu Zhiming said with a smile.
Wen Yunqing soon spotted the cave. It was small.
“Strange. Is the person not in the cave?” Lu Zhiming looked from a distance.
Wen Yunqing attached spiritual energy to her hand, then gently waved it in front of Lu Zhiming’s eyes. “Look again now.”
Lu Zhiming looked back at the cave. The empty cave instantly changed its appearance. Inside, human skeletal remains were clearly visible, and in addition, a person was barely alive.
“That person has no reason to be alive anymore,” Lu Zhiming clenched her fists, taking large strides forward.
Wen Yunqing didn’t speak but looked thoughtfully toward the village. The person who set up the barrier would certainly sense it the moment Lu Zhiming stepped inside.
As Lu Zhiming entered the cave, a stench of decaying corpses immediately rushed in.
“You are Gu Ling, right?” Lu Zhiming blocked her sense of smell, took out first aid supplies from her backpack, and began treating Gu Ling’s wounds.
“Stay awake. Don’t fall asleep,” Lu Zhiming said. Seeing the dense network of wounds on Gu Ling’s body, her anger intensified.
Lu Zhiming had just finished swearing in her heart when she heard a gunshot, immediately followed by four rapid gunshots. The scream of a male followed instantly.
