I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 13
After a simple lesson for the four girls, Wen Yunqing intended to go report the incident to Wen Yimeng. She refused to believe that, with Zhou Jun as a witness, Li Ruolan could still talk her way out of it.
“Classmate Wen, I feel that relying solely on the other party’s one-sided testimony is not very strong evidence,” Zhou Jun stated. “After all, the ones just now were not good people either; their words carry very low credibility.”
Wen Yunqing frowned. “Are you suggesting that Li Ruolan was not the one instigating this behind the scenes?”
Zhou Jun was silent for a moment. Having spent so much time together, she knew a little about Li Ruolan’s character. When facing classmates whose family backgrounds were superior to hers, Li Ruolan was always smiling and easygoing. But when facing a poor student like herself, the contempt and disdain in her eyes were very obvious, and she always used high-sounding excuses to make things difficult for Zhou Jun.
“Classmate Wen, Li Ruolan and Classmate Yimeng have known each other since the first year of high school; they have been deskmates for over a year,” Zhou Jun sighed, analyzing the situation. “I bet that even if I testify against Li Ruolan, she will, at most, just cry and claim she was overly worried about Wen Yimeng, her deskmate, and afraid of losing her good friend, which is why she acted that way.”
“Classmate Yimeng is actually a very soft-hearted person. As soon as Li Ruolan cries and offers a sincere apology, she will most likely forgive her,” Zhou Jun concluded. After all, every few days, Wen Yimeng would find an excuse to give her some food—sometimes a small bun from the supermarket, sometimes a so-called specialty product from abroad. Although the nominal reason for these gifts was always that she bought too much, Zhou Jun understood clearly that this was Wen Yimeng attempting to protect her pride.
Wen Yunqing’s frown deepened upon hearing this. While Zhou Jun’s words made a lot of sense, she simply refused to believe that Wen Yimeng was so easily fooled. Otherwise, why didn’t her precious Yimeng believe her words? If she hadn’t used the tutoring excuse, she might not even be able to get close to her even now.
“We won’t know unless we try. I refuse to believe it otherwise,” analysis was analysis, but practice was practice; Wen Yunqing firmly believed in proving things through action!
Seeing Wen Yunqing’s persistence, Zhou Jun did not try to persuade her further. Instead, while Wen Yunqing spoke, Zhou Jun cooperated fully by testifying and recreating the situation as accurately as possible.
“Did Ruolan really say something behind my back?” Wen Yimeng was first relieved that Zhou Jun was unharmed, but upon hearing the news, her expression became somewhat troubled.
“If you don’t believe it, why not go ask the person involved?” Wen Yunqing suggested.
Wen Yimeng gave Wen Yunqing a strange look, then nodded. “Fine. Since something like this happened, it’s better to ask clearly sooner rather than later.”
Li Ruolan, who was questioned, was first stunned, then her eyes immediately turned red, tears welling up inside.
“Yimeng, are you doubting me now? After so many years of friendship, you don’t trust me?” Li Ruolan covered her mouth, looking as if she was very wronged but determined not to let Wen Yimeng see it. “Why would I instigate someone to target Zhou Jun? Her situation has nothing to do with me.” As she spoke, Li Ruolan’s tears began to fall; her appearance was pitiful to the extreme.
As Zhou Jun predicted, the moment Li Ruolan started crying, Wen Yimeng subconsciously began to comfort her. “I didn’t mean that. Of course, I believe you, but those people really did say those things, so I just wanted to confirm it with you.”
“Then tell me, if I said I never said anything, would Yimeng believe me?” Li Ruolan sniffled. “I promise, at most, I only gossiped a little bit about Zhang Yao proclaiming he wanted to pursue Zhou Jun.”
“Zhang Yao said that in our class in front of everyone; it wasn’t a secret, so I only gossiped a few extra words,” Li Ruolan quietly added another patch to her story.
“Clap, clap, clap—” Just as Li Ruolan was secretly congratulating herself on her perfect explanation, Wen Yunqing applauded gratifyingly.
“Is this the way a ‘green tea’ washes her image clean?” Wen Yunqing scoffed dismissively. “First, appeal to emotion, then play the victim, and finally, gloss over the actual facts.”
“Classmate Wen, why are you targeting me like this?” Li Ruolan’s heart skipped a beat when she was called out, but she quickly regained her composure and looked at Wen Yunqing with red eyes. “Even if you want to destroy my relationship with Yimeng, you need a more reliable reason!” Li Ruolan spoke with an accusatory tone. “You don’t think you can just say anything now that you’ve managed to rope in Zhou Jun, do you?”
“So, you’re trying to shift the blame onto Yimeng and Zhou Jun?” Wen Yunqing sneered. “Did Yimeng and I spend all that effort just to drive a wedge between you and Yimeng?”
“Instead of choosing such a roundabout method, I’d rather just…” Wen Yunqing paused as she noticed Wen Yimeng standing nearby, frowning in thought. She silently swallowed the last two potential words. Changing her original statement, she continued, “…just call someone to break your legs. Wouldn’t that be much cleaner and more direct, preventing you from coming to school?”
“You…” Li Ruolan was frantic. Why wasn’t this Wen Yunqing following the script? She was trying to be logical, so why did the conversation jump to breaking her legs!
“Yimeng, do you believe me or this Li Ruolan?” Wen Yunqing didn’t waste any more time on Li Ruolan; all she needed was Wen Yimeng’s attitude.
“Yimeng, we’ve been deskmates for so long; don’t you know me?” Li Ruolan looked at Wen Yimeng pitifully. She had gone to so much trouble to become Wen Yimeng’s friend; she couldn’t have it all fall apart now before she could properly use her!
“…” Wen Yimeng felt exhausted. Her original intention was just to clarify the sequence of events, but somehow, the argument between Wen Yunqing and Li Ruolan had started while she was questioning them. The most ridiculous part was that the core reason for their fight was her. She wasn’t some feudal emperor from ancient times; why was being on good terms with her so important?
“Ruolan, I’ll ask you one last time: what exactly did you say back then?” Wen Yimeng quickly cleared her thoughts. She might not fully believe Wen Yunqing, but she trusted Zhou Jun’s character; lying was not something Zhou Jun would do.
Li Ruolan bit her lip aggrievedly. “So, Yimeng, you suspect me, right? You think I would deliberately frame Zhou Jun?”
Wen Yimeng remained silent, watching Li Ruolan steadily, waiting for the answer from her lips. Though she could be soft-hearted sometimes, that didn’t mean she was a fool. After observing for a few days, she had vaguely noticed that things weren’t right.
Seeing that she could no longer dodge the question, Li Ruolan sniffled and spoke intermittently, “I just mentioned the matter of Zhang Yao and Zhou Jun while chatting with a friend in Class Two. We were caught up in the conversation, and I’m not clear on the specifics of what we discussed.”
“Perhaps someone nearby was eavesdropping while we were talking and then spread the half-true, half-false news,” Li Ruolan spoke, but she absolutely refused to admit she was wrong.
Still trying to gloss over it? A look of impatience appeared between Wen Yunqing’s brows. Taking advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention, she drew a Truth-Telling Talisman out of thin air and silently cast it onto Li Ruolan.
“I just couldn’t stand Zhou Jun! She’s just a low-class poor student, why should she…” Halfway through her sentence, Li Ruolan suddenly covered her mouth. What was happening? How did she just blurt out her true feelings?!
“Li Ruolan, what are you saying?” Wen Yimeng’s face changed instantly.
“Why are you acting so proud? It’s just because your family background is good! Otherwise, I wouldn’t even bother with a goody-two-shoes like you who has no backbone…” Li Ruolan was going crazy! She didn’t mean to say those things; she truly didn’t mean it!
“Goody-two-shoes, is that your true feeling?” Wen Yunqing looked at the panic and embarrassment on Li Ruolan’s face and felt very satisfied.
“Why are you acting proud? What ‘older female cousin’ nonsense? You look so much like Uncle Wen; you must be his illegitimate daughter, right?” Under the effect of the talisman, Li Ruolan was now saying whatever came to mind. Unless her mind went completely blank, she couldn’t even keep her mouth shut.
“Illegitimate daughter?” Wen Yunqing’s eyebrows rose. “Where did you hear that rumor from?”
“Why do I need to hear it? Your appearance is the strongest evidence!” Li Ruolan’s expression looked like she was about to cry, but she continued speaking uncontrollably. “I’ve observed—Wen Yimeng, whether compared to Uncle Wen or Aunt Wen, does not…” Halfway through her sentence, Li Ruolan suddenly realized she could control herself again and immediately shut her mouth tightly, refusing to say another word.
A hint of regret flashed in Wen Yunqing’s eyes. If her cultivation base were not slowly recovering, this Truth-Telling Talisman wouldn’t have only lasted for three minutes.
Before she could enjoy Li Ruolan’s spectacle further, she noticed Wen Yimeng standing to the side, her head bowed low, silent for a long time.
“Yimeng, it seems your true heart is about to be misplaced,” Wen Yunqing pushed Li Ruolan aside and gently pulled Wen Yimeng into her embrace. “But don’t worry; losing one Li Ruolan means you still have me… and Zhou Jun. Trading one for two—it’s worth it.”
Wen Yunqing spoke rapidly, using her height advantage to completely envelop Wen Yimeng in her arms, blocking everyone’s view. ” Li Ruolan, if you’re still standing here, don’t blame me for being impolite,” Wen Yunqing looked at her with a cold face, her eyes showing undisguised disgust.
Li Ruolan clenched her fists, but before she could even utter a harsh word, she left in a huff. Zhou Jun also seemed to notice the awkward atmosphere; after exchanging a look with Wen Yunqing, she quickly followed suit and left.
“Alright, now it’s just the two of us here. You can cry if you want to,” Wen Yunqing released Wen Yimeng, already feeling a damp patch on her clothes.
Wen Yimeng didn’t move. Instead, she reached out and hugged Wen Yunqing, burying her head completely inside, murmuring muffledly.
“Wen Yunqing, are you very pleased with yourself right now? They’ll soon find out that I am the fake heiress, and you are the real young lady of the Wen family.”
“Nonsense! You are my treasure. If you like the position of the Wen family heiress, I can just leave,” Wen Yunqing said with utter sincerity. She had been fond of Wen Yimeng’s appearance from the very first moment. Whether it was the affected Wen Yimeng, the one secretly showing kindness, or the pitiful and fragile one, she liked them all. If Wen Yimeng truly minded her existence, she could always just rent a separate apartment outside.
