I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 12
Although Wen Yimeng did not fully agree with Wen Yunqing’s words, she did not entirely dismiss them either. Instead, she began to scrutinize her pattern of interaction with Li Ruolan from a different angle.
However, before Wen Yimeng could discover anything substantial, the Autumn Sports Meet arrived first.
As a sports meet that secured sponsorships, Ruihua High put significant effort into the opening ceremony. They not only invited professional hosts but also brought in famous performance troupes from the city, allowing many familiar faces from the screen to be seen during the opening.
“Go, Yimeng! We lost the relay race to Class Two this morning, so you absolutely must beat them in the 100-meter dash! Whether we can surpass Class Two depends on you!” Li Ruolan appeared to be cheering Wen Yimeng on, but her words were unconsciously placing pressure on her.
“I will do my best. Class Two has also come prepared this time,” Wen Yimeng replied, performing warm-up exercises on the track to prevent muscle strain later.
“You can definitely do it! You took second place last year, so this year you can aim for first!” Li Ruolan stated.
“Exactly! Wen Yimeng, you have to cheer up! Our class’s score depends on you to bring it back up!” The surrounding classmates didn’t think much of it and were easily roused by Li Ruolan’s enthusiasm.
If this scene had happened last year, Wen Yimeng would have only felt that her close friend believed in her too much, which is why she placed her hopes upon her. But now, things were different. After viewing the situation from a new perspective, Wen Yimeng felt as if Li Ruolan was intentionally applying pressure. Under these circumstances, if she won, it would be considered expected, but if she lost, she would certainly be blamed.
Thinking this, Wen Yimeng frowned slightly. She didn’t have time to ponder further when she heard the referee calling, “Get ready!” She had to gather her thoughts, set her stance on the starting blocks, and prepare for the 100-meter sprint.
With the countdown and the sound of the starting pistol, Wen Yimeng’s focus locked onto the leading runner. She pumped her arms with all her strength, listened to the rushing wind by her ears, and gritted her teeth!
Third, second, closing in on first… crossing the finish line!
“Do you need some water?” Wen Yunqing stood at the end of the track, steadily catching Wen Yimeng as she slowed down.
“Hoo—hoo—” Wen Yimeng listened to her own strong heartbeat and breathed deeply. “Am I first?”
“Yes, you are first,” Wen Yunqing unscrewed the cap of the mineral water bottle with one hand and held it up toward Wen Yimeng, making it easy for her to drink.
“Thanks,” Wen Yimeng took the water and sipped it slowly. She gently moved out of Wen Yunqing’s embrace and began to walk slowly.
Before Wen Yimeng could fully recover, Li Ruolan arrived from the start line with a group of classmates and immediately hugged Wen Yimeng.
“Yimeng, I knew you were the best! I saw that you two seemed to cross the line at the same time. You’re so amazing, you must have been first, right?” Li Ruolan asked with obvious delight.
“If you wanted to know so badly, why didn’t you go ask the referee?” Wen Yunqing showed no good expression toward Li Ruolan. “Yimeng was busy sprinting; she didn’t have time to pay attention to the opponents’ situations.”
Li Ruolan’s face showed a bit of awkwardness. “Well, I thought the person involved would know. I’m sorry; I was just too anxious. I was thinking if Yimeng was first, our class could pull ahead in the score against Class Two.”
“Wen Yunqing, Li Ruolan was just being kind-hearted; you don’t have to speak to her like that.”
“Exactly! We are all working for the class honor. Why do you have to cling to this one point?” Two accompanying girls chimed in.
“If it’s for honor, then why isn’t anyone checking the scores instead of surrounding the person who won the honor and interrogating her about the result?” Wen Yunqing was clearly annoyed by these words. At the same time, she found it strange—Li Ruolan’s words were clearly passive-aggressive and intentionally annoying, so why couldn’t everyone else figure it out?
“Alright, everyone is just concerned about the score. Don’t worry about these minor details,” Wen Yimeng said, holding her water bottle. “If I’m not mistaken, I should be first.”
“Yay! Yimeng is the best!” Li Ruolan quickly adjusted her expression and congratulated her happily.
Wen Yimeng smiled, offered a few symbolic affirmations, and then subconsciously shifted her gaze toward Wen Yunqing. Why? Why could Wen Yunqing analyze so many layers of meaning from Li Ruolan’s words, yet she herself couldn’t understand such an obvious linguistic hint? Was Wen Yunqing doing this on purpose? If so, what benefit would that bring her?
“That’s strange. Didn’t Zhou Jun say she would take advantage of the Sports Meet to tutor you? Where did she go?” Wen Yimeng said, wearing the medal she just received, her eyes constantly scanning the vicinity, trying to spot Zhou Jun’s figure.
“The last time we saw her was at lunch,” Wen Yunqing said, narrowing her eyes slightly, trying to find Zhou Jun’s presence in the crowd on the field.
Wen Yimeng subconsciously frowned. Zhou Jun clearly promised to watch her race. Even if she misremembered the time, she should have returned to see her receive the award after the results were announced.
“I feel something is off. Let’s go look for her,” Wen Yimeng suggested.
Wen Yunqing withdrew her outward-reaching perception. “I just looked. She is not on the track. I will check the classroom.”
Wen Yimeng nodded. “Okay, then I’ll check the indoor gymnasium.”
Thus, the two parted ways to search for Zhou Jun. Wen Yunqing walked straight to the classroom. As expected, the interior was completely empty; at a time when there were no classes, no one would linger in the school building.
“You… proud… not very strong…” Just as Wen Yunqing was about to change direction to check Zhou Jun’s dormitory, she suddenly heard intermittent sounds. Relying on her superior perception, Wen Yunqing quickly located the source of the sound: it was coming from a locked female restroom.
“Knock, knock,” Wen Yunqing rapped on the door while gently extending her weak perception inside. “Is anyone in there?”
After Wen Yunqing spoke, the inside of the restroom immediately fell silent. After about ten seconds, a girl’s voice came out: “Classmate, I’m changing clothes in here. Perhaps you should use a different restroom?”
Wen Yunqing’s expression immediately darkened. Her perception told her that an acquaintance’s aura was inside—Zhou Jun was in there.
Stepping back into the hallway, Wen Yunqing took a short run-up and kicked the restroom door directly. Bang—a loud crash echoed. The restroom door was of excellent quality; Wen Yunqing’s first kick did not fully open it, but it managed to bend the iron door.
“Holy cow, who is outside?” a surprised voice came from inside the restroom. “That is so awesome! The iron door is bent!”
“Idiot! Awesome for whom? If the person outside is powerful, won’t we be in trouble!” an exasperated girl shouted. “Is there a second door in here?”
“There probably isn’t. Should we try climbing out the window?” Before this girl could finish speaking, Wen Yunqing’s second kick landed on the door. The already bent door finally gave way completely, and the door frame also became shaky.
“Don’t come closer! We just scared Zhou Jun a little; we didn’t do anything to her!” Seeing the perpetrator of the kicking storm in, the four girls, excluding Zhou Jun, were so frightened they huddled together.
Zhou Jun, completely drenched, silently wiped the water from her face, the shock in her eyes still lingering. She had studied physics; the action of force is mutual. Judging by the material and the extent of the damage to the iron door, the impact force it sustained absolutely exceeded what a normal person could withstand.
“Zhou Jun, are you alright?” Wen Yunqing only briefly sensed the situation inside and did not know the specifics of what had occurred.
Zhou Jun turned to glance at the four girls huddled together and exhaled. “It’s fine. They just threatened me a few times, and then splashed a few buckets of water on me.”
“We are all classmates; we should talk things out civilly,” the leading girl, who was not very tall—just over one meter sixty—and wearing an exquisite little dress, said.
“Why did you do this?” Wen Yunqing asked. Just being classmates didn’t mean anything; even fellow disciples in the same sect might kill each other.
The leading girl swallowed. “Um, Zhou Jun seduced Zhang Yao, and after hooking him, she gave him the cold shoulder. We couldn’t stand it, so we wanted to vent some anger for Zhang Yao.”
Zhang Yao? Wen Yunqing paused before remembering that this was the person she had warned to walk the other way whenever he saw her. “Did he ask you to deal with Zhou Jun?” Wen Yunqing frowned slightly. Given Zhang Yao’s temper, if he wanted revenge, he should have come after her.
The girl shook her head. “It wasn’t Zhang Yao who told us. Others told us.”
“…” Wen Yunqing was speechless. What was wrong with these girls? Did none of them possess independent thought?
“Who were these ‘others’?” Zhou Jun pressed.
The leading girl scratched her cheek. “This… we accidentally overheard them discussing this matter. It probably doesn’t count as being specifically informed?”
A question mark slowly appeared above Wen Yunqing’s head. “You all had a lot of nerve bullying a classmate, but why are you so timid now?” Wen Yunqing asked. “Do you take bullying people as an honor, but consider telling the truth as shameful?”
The leading girl choked; this was not the same thing at all. The person they bullied was Zhou Jun, just a poor student. As long as she wanted to remain at Ruihua, she absolutely wouldn’t do anything to them. But the ‘others’ were different; even though they were all classmates, she had to consider the families behind them—some people were not to be offended.
“You won’t talk?” Wen Yunqing said, beginning to rotate her wrists. “I suddenly realized my fists are feeling a bit itchy…”
“!!” Seeing the kicked-open iron door, the four girls tacitly took a step back.
“Um, regardless of whether the other party intended it or not, we heard this information from Li Ruolan,” the leading girl finally yielded to absolute force. If she didn’t speak, this somewhat androgynous-looking girl might actually throw a punch at her.
“Li Ruolan?” Wen Yunqing’s eyebrow arched; she was not particularly surprised by this answer.
