I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 32
The trees outside the window blurred past in a rush. The afternoon sun, no longer harsh, cast a soft, golden glow over the bustling crowds of commuters. Though the windows were closed, Tang Fuzhi found herself gazing out with a newfound calm, the heat in her cheeks gradually fading away.
Suddenly, Tang Fuzhi remembered her conversation with Tang Fuyu earlier that afternoon. She turned to Tao Ran, her expression serious.
“Tang Fuyu told me we had a fight three months ago?”
Tao Ran’s heart skipped a beat. She snapped out of her reverie, a flicker of wariness in her eyes as she looked up at Tang Fuzhi. “What exactly did she say?”
I shouldn’t have let Tang Fuzhi and Tang Fuyu be alone together, Tao Ran thought. That girl has no filter. She spills everything.
Tang Fuzhi hadn’t initially given the matter much thought, merely curious. But seeing Tao Ran’s reaction, her curiosity grew, tinged with a hint of suspicion.
Trusting Tao Ran, however, Tang Fuzhi suppressed her doubts and repeated what Tang Fuyu had told her.
“What? Did Tang Fuyu misunderstand something?” Tang Fuzhi asked, puzzled. “We didn’t actually argue. Could she have gotten it wrong?”
Tao Ran met the young woman’s clear gaze and paused for a long moment, her voice low and husky. “She wasn’t wrong.”
They had known each other for four years and never argued. That one time was the deepest pain in Tao Ran’s heart.
“That day, for some reason, you suddenly said Huo Yuan and I were a good match,” Tao Ran said, her beautiful peach blossom eyes fixed on Tang Fuzhi. This question had haunted her for so long, and she desperately wanted an answer. “I’ve never understood why you would push me toward someone else.”
As she recalled that day, a hint of sorrow clouded Tao Ran’s eyes. “You knew I liked you. I told you I liked you. But you denied my feelings, saying we were just friends.”
“I’d only met Huo Yuan two or three times, and those were all work-related. We’d never even seen each other privately. Yet you insisted we were a good match.”
Tao Ran’s emotions grew agitated. She reached out and gripped Tang Fuzhi’s slender shoulders, her eyes filled with unyielding pain. “I don’t understand, Tang Tang. We’ve been together for four years. You can reject my feelings, but you can’t deny me.”
“I don’t understand,” Tao Ran said, her grip tightening on Tang Fuzhi’s shoulders, her voice trembling with barely suppressed emotion. “We were so happy together for four years. Why did you start pushing me away the moment Huo Yuan appeared? You… you liked me too.”
She refused to believe that after four years together, Tang Fuzhi felt nothing for her.
Tao Ran’s grip tightened further, her control slipping. “Tang Tang, if I did something wrong, tell me. Why… why would you push me onto someone else?”
Tang Fuzhi flinched, overwhelmed by Tao Ran’s intensity.
The usually smiling, gentle Tao Ran was now just an ordinary woman tormented by love. Tears welled in her eyes, brimming with sorrow and confusion.
She couldn’t understand Tang Fuzhi’s coldness, and she resented her cruelty.
Tang Fuzhi shook her head, a strange unease creeping into her heart.
Even with amnesia, her personality hadn’t changed. She knew she wasn’t the kind of person to push away someone she liked. If she liked someone, she would fight for them.
Even if she didn’t like someone, she would politely reject them, never push them toward another person.
But when she met Tao Ran’s sorrowful gaze, which seemed utterly sincere, Tang Fuzhi felt confused. “I… I don’t know. I don’t remember.”
Tao Ran seemed not to hear her, pressing on with her questioning, her grip tightening. “Why did you push me away? Why?! You were the one who approached me first!”
“Hiss—”
Tang Fuzhi’s shoulder ached from Tao Ran’s grip. She had never seen Tao Ran like this before.
Not knowing what else to do, she instinctively wrapped her arms around Tao Ran, patting her back soothingly, just as Tao Ran had comforted her before.
The young woman’s voice, as soft and gentle as her nature, pleaded, “Tao Ran, please don’t be like this. You’re scaring me.”
The fear in the young woman’s eyes pierced Tao Ran’s heart. The scent of white tea clung to her nostrils, and the soft, pale hand caressing her back felt warm and tender.
Tao Ran’s anger suddenly dissipated. Her grip loosened, and she closed her eyes, pulling the young woman into a tight embrace, savoring the warmth of her presence.
The panic of losing her, the resentment of being pushed away, all melted away under the young woman’s gentle reassurance.
After a long moment, Tao Ran released Tang Fuzhi, reaching out to stroke her cheek. Her expression softened, returning to its usual tenderness, tinged with remorse. “I’m sorry. I got carried away. I know you’ve lost your memories and don’t remember anything.”
Though she didn’t know why she had acted that way three months ago, the information she had now suggested it was indeed her fault.
Tang Fuzhi shook her head, leaning forward slightly from the waist to press a kiss to Tao Ran’s lips, reassuring her, “It’s okay. What happened before is in the past. Maybe when my memories return, we can clear up this misunderstanding.”
The young woman tilted her head, her bright eyes fixed on Tao Ran as if trying to dispel all the darkness in her heart.
Sensing Tang Fuzhi’s guilt, Tao Ran kissed her tender lips again, gently biting her lower lip, restraining the urge to bite through it.
Perhaps sensing she had done something wrong in the past, Tang Fuzhi didn’t resist. Instead, she surprisingly leaned in, taking the initiative.
Tao Ran silently opened her eyes, watching the young woman’s attempts to make amends, and felt increasingly despicable.
In truth, she had been deceiving Tang Fuzhi all along, taking advantage of her amnesia to claim her as her own.
Now that Tang Fuyu had revealed their argument from three months ago, Tao Ran didn’t know how to explain. She simply confessed the truth, exploiting Tang Fuzhi’s tendency for self-reflection to indulge in her pity.
“Ouch!”
A small cut appeared on the corner of Tao Ran’s lip. Tang Fuzhi immediately pulled back, her face filled with remorse. “I… I didn’t mean to.”
This was the young woman’s first time being so proactive, and her movements were a bit clumsy and forceful. Tao Ran wiped the blood from the corner of her lip and then pressed it against Tang Fuzhi’s mouth, smiling gently. “With practice, you’ll get better.”
Just then, the car came to a stop. Tang Fuzhi heard He Ruo’s voice from the front: “President Tao, we’ve arrived.”
Tao Ran released Tang Fuzhi, opened the car door, and stepped out. He Ruo had already retrieved the luggage. When she saw the two women in the car, her cheeks flushed slightly, especially when she noticed President Tao’s bleeding lip.
Young people these days, He Ruo thought, shaking her head inwardly. Their love affairs are so intense.
As Tao Ran got out, she turned back to pat Tang Fuzhi’s head and said warmly, “Get some rest tonight and wake up early tomorrow. I’ll call you.”
Tang Fuzhi, who had been about to get out to see her off, paused, silently withdrew her leg, and nodded obediently.
After the two women had left, Xu Rujia leaned forward with a mischievous grin. “Tang Tang, what were you and President Tao just…”
A faint metallic tang lingered on Tang Fuzhi’s lips, as if Tao Ran were still beside her. Xu Rujia’s teasing made her cheeks flush crimson. She slammed the car door shut and mumbled, “Let’s go home. No gossiping allowed.”
Xu Rujia wore a look of mock disappointment.
I thought I was going to get some juicy gossip, she thought, but Tang Fuzhi is so shy.
Back at home, Tang Fuzhi was about to order takeout when she turned to see Xu Rujia with her sleeves rolled up, looking ready for a fight.
“What are you doing?” Tang Fuzhi asked, puzzled.
Xu Rujia opened the refrigerator, pulled out some ingredients, and replied, “Making dinner. President Tao said I’m in charge of cooking for you while she’s away.”
“And I’m getting double pay this month, hehe.”
Tang Fuzhi silently withdrew her hand from her phone.
Xu Rujia’s cooking skills were actually quite decent. While she couldn’t compare to Tao Ran, she was definitely above average for an ordinary person.
After a quick dinner, Xu Rujia said, “President Tao said I could sleep in her room, but I’m worried about accidentally messing things up, so she bought the apartment next door. I’ll be staying there for the next few days. Feel free to reach out if you need anything.”
She picked up her uniform bag and handed Tang Fuzhi a copy of the key to the neighboring apartment before leaving.
Tang Fuzhi finished washing up, sketched for a while, and finally crawled back into bed around eleven.
After scrolling through her phone for a bit, she remembered she needed to wake up early to call Tao Ran tomorrow. She quickly put her phone down, turned off the light, and tried to sleep.
Usually, Tao Ran would be beside her in bed, and Tang Fuzhi would often complain about her. But now that Tao Ran was gone, Tang Fuzhi felt an emptiness beside her, a sense of insecurity.
She stretched out her arms and legs, making a sprawling X shape on the bed, feeling utterly unconstrained. For the first time, she realized just how big the bed really was.
Tang Fuzhi gazed up at the faint glow outside the window. The room was so quiet she could hear her own breathing.
Bored, she started counting sheep.
One sheep.
Two sheep.
Three sheep.
As Tang Fuzhi counted sheep, she couldn’t help but think about what Tao Ran had told her that afternoon.
Why would she push her girlfriend of four years onto someone else, especially a man?
The more Tang Fuzhi pondered, the more restless she became.
Suddenly, she remembered the strange sensation she’d felt upon waking: that peculiar buzzing sound and the feeling of being pulled back.
Her mind raced with wild theories. Could there be other supernatural beings in this world? Aliens, perhaps?
Could she have been possessed by an alien or bound to some kind of System from a novel, forcing her to act against her own will?
Tang Fuzhi chuckled, realizing she was letting her imagination run wild.
She shook her head. Maybe I’ve just been too bored these past few days, reading too many novels. That’s why I’m having such outlandish thoughts.
Closing her eyes, she resumed counting sheep. I guess I’ll only get answers about that incident once my memories return.
Before she knew it, she had finally drifted off to sleep.
The alarm clock rang precisely at 6:50 AM. For the first time, Tang Fuzhi didn’t hit snooze; she woke up almost the instant it went off.
She and Tao Ran had agreed to video call at 7:00 AM, but girls always want to freshen up a bit before seeing their crush, at least washing their face and brushing their teeth.
Even though Tao Ran had seen her just-woke-up, unwashed face countless times, yesterday was the first time Tang Fuzhi had truly realized how much Tao Ran meant to her. So she decided to wash up before calling Tao Ran.
Almost exactly at 7:00 AM, Tao Ran video called.
Tang Fuzhi gazed at Tao Ran on her phone screen, still feeling a bit giddy.
This was their first video call ever.
As soon as Tao Ran saw Tang Fuzhi, she naturally noticed the background behind her.
Tao Ran knew Tang Fuzhi wouldn’t disappear without a word like she had three months ago, but being so far apart for the first time still made her a little anxious. Seeing the unmistakably familiar backdrop of Tang Fuzhi’s home, she felt a silent wave of relief wash over her. A smile tugged at her lips as she asked, “How did you sleep?”
Tang Fuzhi lay sprawled on the bed, propping her chin in her hands, her slender, pale legs swinging back and forth behind her. She seemed to be in high spirits. “Not good,” she said.
Tao Ran’s smile faded slightly. “What’s wrong? Did something happen? Or did you have a nightmare?”
The woman’s obvious nervousness only made Tang Fuzhi feel even better.
Tang Fuzhi drawled, “I can’t sleep alone.”
Tao Ran’s furrowed brow gradually relaxed, her expression softening. “Me neither,” she replied gently.
A hint of fatigue shadowed her eyes. Tang Fuzhi suddenly remembered that Tao Ran had traveled from T City to H City, likely arriving around midnight. Considering she still needed to unpack, she probably hadn’t gotten to sleep until very late.
The smile in Tang Fuzhi’s eyes dimmed, replaced by concern. “Didn’t you sleep well last night either? Why don’t you rest a bit longer? I’ll video call you later.”
Tao Ran rubbed her temples, still smiling warmly. “It’s fine. Just seeing you is enough.”
In truth, she hadn’t slept at all last night.
By the time she got off the plane, it was already midnight. After checking into the hotel, unpacking, and handling some urgent work, she glanced at the clock and realized it was two in the morning.
Yet she felt no trace of sleepiness.
Just moments ago, a few minutes before seven, she had been staring at her phone, waiting for exactly seven o’clock to video call Tang Fuzhi.
As Tao Ran gazed into Tang Fuzhi’s increasingly deep eyes, no one could possibly understand the torment of her anticipation.
In the two seconds before Tang Fuzhi answered the call, Tao Ran was still reliving the memory of Tang Fuzhi’s departure, still gripped by the fear of losing her at any moment.
It had to be said, when it came to Tang Fuzhi, Tao Ran had never possessed a shred of confidence.
