I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 10
The assistant on the other end of the line naturally heard Tang Fuzhi’s voice before Tao Ran abruptly hung up, leaving her utterly bewildered.
What does she mean, “I woke up and you were gone”?
Is that younger sister living with President Tao?!
Cohabitation? Such scandalous news! Am I even allowed to hear this?!
This is too juicy to keep to myself! I have to share it with the girls!
Tao Ran, of course, had no idea what the assistant was thinking. Her immediate concern was Tang Fuzhi. She stepped forward, lifted Tang Fuzhi into her arms, and gently placed her on a chair. “You were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want to disturb you.”
Tang Fuzhi instinctively reached out and clutched the fabric over Tao Ran’s chest, gripping it tightly as if afraid she would vanish.
Dissatisfied with Tao Ran’s answer, her tear-filled eyes grew even more aggrieved. She buried her face against Tao Ran’s chest, her voice muffled and still raspy from sleep, sounding utterly pitiful. “I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”
Tao Ran’s hand, which had been about to stroke Tang Fuzhi’s hair, froze mid-air. The icy dampness seeped through the thin fabric, penetrating her heart like an invisible hand squeezing it tightly.
She had been so immersed in Tang Fuzhi’s dependence that she had completely overlooked her feelings. In this unfamiliar environment, Tang Fuzhi’s clinginess stemmed from anxiety, yet Tao Ran had secretly rejoiced in her distress.
If she hadn’t been holding Tang Fuzhi in her arms, Tao Ran would have slapped herself.
“It was my fault,” Tao Ran murmured, resting her chin on Tang Fuzhi’s shoulder. Her voice was gentle, her eyes filled with an unwavering tenderness. “I won’t let it happen again. I’m sorry.”
Tang Fuzhi sobbed, the faint scent of cedarwood filling her nostrils, inexplicably soothing her anxiety. But her emotions, once stirred, refused to subside so quickly.
It took a long while for Tang Fuzhi to stop crying. She pulled back slightly, noticing how her tears had soaked Tao Ran’s chest and how her frantic movements had disheveled Tao Ran’s collar, revealing a hint of soft skin beneath.
The return of her rationality, coupled with the sight before her, made her feel guilty.
What had Tao Ran done wrong? she thought. She just didn’t want to wake me.
It’s me who’s too sensitive, too insecure.
“I’m sorry,” Tang Fuzhi mumbled, sniffing and lowering her head. Her hand fell from Tao Ran’s shirt, her voice barely audible. “I got your clothes dirty.”
The sudden apology startled Tao Ran. She quickly replied, “No, I should be the one apologizing.”
Tao Ran cupped the girl’s face, her own eyes reddening. A few tears still clung to Tang Fuzhi’s long lashes, making her look utterly pitiful. Tao Ran’s heart melted completely.
She pressed her lips to Tang Fuzhi’s lashes, tasting the salty bitterness of her tears. It was only then that Tao Ran truly grasped the profound impact her amnesia had had on Tang Fuzhi.
“Tang Tang, you don’t need to be so cautious. You’re my girlfriend, the person I want to spend my life with. No matter what happens, I’ll never leave you.”
Before her amnesia, she never had the chance to express these feelings. Now, she seized this opportunity to declare them aloud.
Tang Fuzhi’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, her heart stirred, and her hand unconsciously tightened its grip on Tao Ran’s hem.
The amnesiac Tang Fuzhi couldn’t reciprocate Tao Ran’s affection, but her heart still felt a faint sweetness from Tao Ran’s comforting words. No one could resist the warmth of being cherished. She murmured softly, “I… I’m thirsty.”
After crying for so long, her throat felt dry and her voice was hoarse, making her uncomfortable.
Faced with Tang Fuzhi’s evasion, Tao Ran felt a pang of disappointment. If Tang Fuzhi hadn’t lost her memories, she would have thrown her arms around Tao Ran’s neck, exclaiming excitedly, “I knew my Tao Tao was the best! We promised to be together forever, not a single day less!”
She might even have extended her pinky finger for a childish pinky promise. It was so silly, yet it always struck a chord in Tao Ran’s heart.
But dwelling on it now wouldn’t change anything. She believed that one day she would win back Tang Fuzhi’s heart. After all, she had all the time in the world.
Tao Ran reached out and gently stroked Tang Fuzhi’s hair, her slightly upturned peach blossom eyes brimming with amusement. “Sit tight. I’ll get you some water.”
Tang Fuzhi nodded obediently. Only after Tao Ran left did she notice the laptop on the desk was still open. It looked like Tao Ran had been in a meeting just moments ago. She recognized all the individual words on the screen, but when combined, they made absolutely no sense to her.
Indeed, expertise in one field is like a mountain separating you from another.
The bookshelf nearby was filled with a variety of books. Besides some technical volumes she couldn’t understand, there were also art-related professional books she should be able to read, as well as many novels that didn’t seem like Tao Ran’s usual taste.
She hesitated between a novel and a professional book, ultimately choosing the latter, which she figured she should be able to understand.
Before she’d read for long, Tao Ran entered with a glass of water.
“I made you honey-lemon water. I think you’ll like the sweetness.”
The woman’s short skirt swayed with her movements, drawing attention to her long, straight legs. Tang Fuzhi averted her gaze, took the glass, and sipped. The sweet-and-sour taste was perfect, exactly to her liking. A smile tugged at her lips, and even the anxiety she’d felt earlier about not finding Tao Ran vanished with each sip.
“It’s delicious! Thank you.”
Tao Ran leaned down, meeting Tang Fuzhi’s eyes as she gently stroked her hair. “You don’t need to thank me. I’m your girlfriend. This is what I should be doing.”
Tang Fuzhi’s distant attitude toward her needed to change.
But she also knew some things couldn’t be rushed.
“If you really want to thank me…” Tao Ran leaned closer, her clean scent of cedarwood and white tea blending seamlessly. Her slender, pale fingers brushed Tang Fuzhi’s cheek, and her red lips curved into a teasing smile. “How about a kiss? That’s how you used to thank me.”
Tang Fuzhi didn’t know if Tao Ran was telling the truth, but she wasn’t about to indulge her. She pushed Tao Ran away and muttered, “Stop being so improper. Go change your clothes first.”
Her upper body was a wrinkled mess from her earlier tears, looking utterly disheveled.
Tao Ran chuckled softly, not insisting on Tang Fuzhi changing. When she returned, she pulled up another chair to sit beside Tang Fuzhi.
Assuming Tao Ran was about to start working, Tang Fuzhi remembered her own memory loss and current inability to work, relying entirely on Tao Ran for support. She didn’t want to disturb her. Bracing herself on the armrests, she tried to stand up. “I… I’ll go now. Don’t want to interrupt your work.”
Before she could rise, a warm hand settled on the back of her hand. Tang Fuzhi looked up in confusion. Tao Ran replied, “Working alone is boring. Stay and keep me company?”
What’s boring about work? Tang Fuzhi thought. Even if she stayed, she couldn’t help much. But she understood Tao Ran’s intention: to make her feel safe.
She had to admit, her perception of Tao Ran over the past few days had been rather one-sided, seeing her only as the perfect, devoted girlfriend. This was the first time she’d witnessed Tao Ran’s professional demeanor.
At work, Tao Ran’s face was devoid of smiles, her expression icy. Even the occasional raised eyebrow carried a hint of aggression. Every word she spoke was direct and concise, not a single syllable wasted.
Even just sitting next to Tao Ran, Tang Fuzhi felt a little nervous listening to her speak, let alone facing the group of people across the conference table.
This side of Tao Ran was completely unfamiliar to Tang Fuzhi, yet also strangely intriguing.
Watching Tao Ran work so intently, Tang Fuzhi grew curious about her own past occupation. As soon as Tao Ran finished her meeting, she asked.
Tao Ran paused, surprised that Tang Fuzhi would ask about work. She pulled a drawing tablet from a nearby drawer and handed it to Tang Fuzhi. “You used to study art and occasionally take on commercial commissions.”
After all, different fields are like separate mountains. Though Tao Ran knew what Tang Fuzhi did, she wasn’t an expert in the field and didn’t know the specifics of her work.
Tang Fuzhi opened the tablet, her eyes lighting up at the artwork inside. Despite her memory loss, her hands quickly rediscovered their familiar touch when faced with something so familiar.
Seeing this, Tao Ran didn’t disturb her and continued working.
The study was filled with a comfortable atmosphere. The two women worked on their own tasks, keeping each other company. The afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, bathing them in a tranquil, timeless glow.
Lost in work, Tao Ran glanced at the time again and realized it was already past six.
If it had been just her, she wouldn’t have minded going hungry. But with Tang Fuzhi here, they needed to eat on time.
Tao Ran looked up and saw Tang Fuzhi still in the same position, her hand moving across the drawing tablet with a stylus. A stray strand of hair had fallen across her cheek, but she didn’t seem to notice, her beautiful amber eyes completely focused on her work.
After three months, this familiar scene was finally playing out again.
Tao Ran gently patted Tang Fuzhi’s head. “Let’s draw more tomorrow. You’ve just been discharged from the hospital and shouldn’t overexert yourself.”
Tang Fuzhi rubbed her eyes, only then realizing how late it had gotten. She patted her flat stomach. “I’m so hungry.”
She looked up at Tao Ran with a pitiful expression, as if begging to be fed.
Tao Ran chuckled softly, still enjoying Tang Fuzhi’s closeness. “I’ll make your favorite dishes tonight.”
If her legs hadn’t been injured, Tang Fuzhi would have jumped for joy.
The meals these past few days hadn’t been bad, just bland, leaving her craving something spicy.
Like guobaorou, spicy pork stir-fry, or braised pork ribs…
Just thinking about them made her mouth water.
For dinner, Tao Ran indeed made a spicy pork stir-fry. Each piece of meat was coated in the fragrant heat of chili peppers. Perhaps to accommodate Tang Fuzhi’s recent discharge, the spice level wasn’t too intense, but it was better than nothing, and quite satisfying for her current condition.
The only downside was that there wasn’t enough; it was probably less than half the portion of a regular dish.
That night, Tang Fuzhi lay half-reclined on her bed after showering, her heart racing. She flipped through the book in her hands without really noticing, her entire focus on the sounds coming from the bathroom.
As the water stopped running, the tips of her fingers gripping the book turned slightly white.
Even though she had slept with Tao Ran in the hospital, this wasn’t the hospital; it was her bedroom, and the feeling was different.
Tang Fuzhi calmed herself, trying not to overthink things. When Tao Ran came out, she would use the excuse of not being used to sleeping with someone to ask her to return to her own room.
After observing Tao Ran’s kindness these past two days, she figured she wouldn’t refuse… right?
But Tang Fuzhi wasn’t entirely sure.
She finally endured until Tao Ran emerged, fully dressed. Just as Tang Fuzhi was about to speak, her eyes fell on the woman’s slender figure. The red spaghetti-strap dress looked anything but tacky on her; instead, it exuded an air of regal elegance.
Oh wow, Tang Fuzhi thought.
When Tang Fuzhi’s gaze landed on Tao Ran’s thigh, she swallowed hard and quickly looked away.
She was utterly defenseless against beautiful women with long legs, secretly tempted to just give in.
With such a gorgeous, considerate, and gentle girlfriend, what more could I possibly want?
Maybe I should just let it go. After all, it’s not like I’m the one losing out by sleeping together.
Just as Tang Fuzhi was about to surrender, her reason intervened.
No, no, I can’t be seduced by mere beauty!
Having made up her mind, Tang Fuzhi clenched her fists and met Tao Ran’s gaze. Her originally resolute words came out soft and hesitant: “I… I’m still not used to sleeping with someone else. Why don’t you go back to your own room tonight?”
Tao Ran usually indulged Tang Fuzhi’s wishes, but when it came to her own interests, she refused to budge.
If I agree to separate beds tonight, who knows? Tomorrow she might want to separate houses too.
Still, she knew she couldn’t confront Tang Fuzhi directly.
Tang Fuzhi watched as the woman who had moments ago resembled a magnificent peony flower instantly transformed into a pitiful, homeless waif. “We’ve always slept together. During the three months you were in the hospital, I couldn’t sleep properly a single night.”
She added with a knowing expression, looking deeply wounded, “Oh, right. You’ve lost your memory. You don’t remember any of our past together. I was too eager, always trying to stay close to you, hoping to jog your memories…”
Tao Ran’s tone sounded exactly like someone who had been abandoned by a faithless lover.
Tang Fuzhi couldn’t help but reflect on her own behavior.
Had she been too harsh?
Her girlfriend, who had finally woken up after three months, had lost her memory and was now drawing a line between them. Anyone would find that hard to accept.
Before Tang Fuzhi could fully process her thoughts, Tao Ran had already grabbed her laptop from the bedside table and was about to leave. Tang Fuzhi instinctively called out, “What are you taking the laptop for?”
Tao Ran offered a bitter smile. “The night is long and I can’t sleep. I need something to pass the time.”
With those words hanging in the air, Tang Fuzhi glanced out the window. The sky was a dark, oppressive expanse, with only a few scattered stars faintly visible. She finally relented.
I can’t let my girlfriend, who’s always been so good to me, spend the entire night working instead of sleeping, she thought. That would be inhuman.
“Fine,” Tang Fuzhi said. “I’ll just have to get used to it eventually.” After all, it wasn’t the first time they’d slept together.
What’s the point of fighting it? Tang Fuzhi thought with a sense of resignation.
She hadn’t broken up with Tao Ran in the past four years, so barring any unforeseen circumstances, they probably wouldn’t break up in the next four years either.
Whether I sleep early or late, it’s all the same. I might as well get used to it sooner and start enjoying my rights as her girlfriend.
Recalling the feel of holding Tao Ran’s hand yesterday, Tang Fuzhi’s cheeks flushed slightly. She had to admit, the sensation had been quite pleasant.
