I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 50
Meng Yuqing made herself right at home without needing any invitation from Zhong Xiaoxiao. She walked in as if she owned the place, plopped down on the sofa, and demanded water like some entitled guest.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was fuming inside. She took several deep breaths before pouring a glass of water and shoving it at Meng Yuqing with an attitude. “Here. Drink up and get out.”
“Guests should be treated with courtesy,” Meng Yuqing said as she accepted the water. “You shouldn’t be so rude to visitors.”
“Uninvited intruders don’t count as guests,” Zhong Xiaoxiao scoffed.
Meng Yuqing took a sip and glanced around. “Your mom’s not home, huh?”
“She went grocery shopping. She’ll be back soon,” Zhong Xiaoxiao lied, trying to shoo her away. “You should leave.”
“Liar. Your mom’s at work.” Meng Yuqing smirked triumphantly. “Am I right?”
Zhong Xiaoxiao’s expression was unreadable. Now she regretted opening the door and letting her in. Before leaving, the protagonist’s mother had repeatedly warned her not to open the door for anyone, why hadn’t she listened?
“Being home alone is boring. I’m here to keep you company.”
“No thanks,” Zhong Xiaoxiao rejected flatly, urging her again. “Get out. I need to sleep.”
“Go ahead and sleep. I won’t bother you.” Meng Yuqing gestured for her to go to her room.
“…” God, what sin had she committed to deserve this shameless pest?
Zhong Xiaoxiao had been forcing herself to stay awake, but exhaustion was overwhelming her. Unable to hold out any longer, she retreated to her room. To prevent Meng Yuqing from sneaking in, she locked the door but then realized that if she ran a fever and no one noticed, it could be dangerous. So she unlocked it. But then again, letting Meng Yuqing sneak in seemed even worse, so she locked it again. Yet, a fever going unnoticed could be serious, she might end up with brain damage. So she unlocked it once more.
She stood by the door, locking and unlocking it repeatedly, as if playing a game. She just couldn’t decide whether to keep it locked or not.
Argh! So annoying!
Zhong Xiaoxiao wavered between the risks of burning up with fever versus being harmed by Meng Yuqing. In the end, she decided burning up was the lesser evil.
Click. She locked the door. Perfect.
Zhong Xiaoxiao climbed into bed, curling up in her safe cocoon, and drifted into a deep sleep.
Outside the room, the system was arguing fiercely with Meng Yuqing.
System 666: I don’t get it, why are you even here? The female lead is fine. What business is it of yours? And you skipped class to come!
Meng Yuqing: Can’t I check on my future sister-in-law for my brother?
System 666: Meng Yuqing, don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Let me remind you, this world’s storyline is set. The female lead belongs to the male lead, and not even the heavens can change that. The male lead is Meng Yuzhou your brother, need I say more?
Meng Yuqing: Did I ever say she wasn’t the male lead’s? Haven’t I been calling her my sister-in-law all along? I don’t get why you’re making such a fuss. You’re the most nagging, petty, annoying system I’ve ever met. If you’ve got nothing useful to say, just disappear. You’re getting on my nerves.
System 666: You’re getting on my nerves! That’s way too harsh! How many systems have you even met to call me the most nagging, petty, annoying one? You’re the most nagging, petty, annoying, disobedient host ever! Ugh! You’re driving me crazy!
The system wanted to whip Meng Yuqing with a small leather whip, but Meng Yuqing remained expressionless, which only made the system angrier the more it looked at her. Hmph, let’s see how you handle the trial of ice and fire.
The system rummaged through its space, determined to punish Meng Yuqing severely. It pulled out a ball of flames emitting strange heat this was the heroine’s “agony.”
The system recalled how the heroine had been in extreme distress that day, her face pale as if she were about to die. It wondered how Meng Yuqing would feel. With that thought, it hurled the “agony” straight at Meng Yuqing. Hmph, Meng Yuqing, let’s see if your mouth stays this stubborn.
Meng Yuqing saw the system throw something at her, but before she could react, it landed on her head. Suddenly, her entire body trembled violently, her heart pounding so fast the world seemed to spin around her. Her stomach churned as if tossed by raging waves the agony was unbearable.
“W-what did you throw at me?” Meng Yuqing clutched her head as the world spun dizzyingly before her eyes. She was too disoriented to even locate the system, her focus shattered by the vertigo. All she could manage was a weak, breathless question.
Seeing her suffering, the system was immensely pleased: Let’s see how tough you are when you’re up against me. I’ll see just how stubborn that mouth of yours is.
“Ugh!” Meng Yuqing felt so dizzy she wanted to vomit. A feeling of wanting to die sprouted from the depths of her heart, first a tiny bud, then rapidly growing into a towering tree! She collapsed onto the sofa, then rolled onto the floor, knocking into the coffee table. The glass on it tipped over, crashing to the ground with a loud smash.
The sound was like a thunderclap beside Zhong Xiaoxiao’s ear, jolting her awake instantly.
What was happening?
A dream?
Zhong Xiaoxiao sat up in bed, utterly bewildered, straining her ears to listen outside the door. But there was no further noise was it just a dream?
She stared at the door for a few silent seconds, her heart inexplicably tugged by something. Without thinking, she got up and walked over, opening the door only to be met with a piercing moan that echoed through the empty house, vibrating against her eardrums.
Meng Yuqing! That was Zhong Xiaoxiao’s first thought. She immediately rushed to the living room and saw Meng Yuqing writhing on the floor in obvious agony.
“Meng Yuqing!” Zhong Xiaoxiao instinctively reached out to help her, her heart pounding wildly. “What’s wrong with you, Meng Yuqing?”
Meng Yuqing faintly heard Zhong Xiaoxiao’s voice, but it sounded distorted and distant, as if unreal. Her eyes remained tightly shut, her face deathly pale, as though she were on the verge of dying.
Zhong Xiaoxiao tried to lift her up a little, but Meng Yuqing’s dead weight dragged them both down. Struggling with exhaustion and panic, Zhong Xiaoxiao had no choice but to lay her back down and hurry to her room to call for an ambulance.
“Don’t go!” Suddenly, with inexplicable strength, Meng Yuqing wrapped her arms around Zhong Xiaoxiao’s waist. Just as Zhong Xiaoxiao had managed to stand slightly, she was yanked back down, landing hard on her bottom with a painful thud.
“Meng Yuqing, I need to call an ambulance, let go of me!” Zhong Xiaoxiao was frantic, but Meng Yuqing stubbornly clung to her.
Meng Yuqing rested her head on Zhong Xiaoxiao’s lap, her arms still around her waist. “I’m fine.” she murmured weakly, eyes still closed, as if trying to reassure her.
Fine?! You’re about to die! Zhong Xiaoxiao wanted to scream. Her lips were white, how was this fine?!
“Meng Yuqing, if you’re going to die, don’t do it in my house!” Zhong Xiaoxiao snapped, frustration and helplessness boiling over.
“You won’t die…” Meng Yuqing smiled, her grin twisting her ghostly pale face into something truly ghastly.
Zhong Xiaoxiao forced herself to calm down, only then noticing the blood dripping from Meng Yuqing’s hand. The long sleeves had hidden it at first, but now the metallic scent hung in the air, and smears of red stained the floor. Nearby lay shattered glass and a puddle of water.
Xiaoxiao’s heart pounded again. “M-Meng Yuqing, you’re bleeding.”
“Mhm…”
“You’re really bleeding!”
“Mhm…”
“What do you mean, ‘mhm’?! I’ll get something to bandage it!” Xiaoxiao tried to stand, but Meng Yuqing clung stubbornly to her waist. “Dizzy, don’t move.”
Hearing that, Xiaoxiao didn’t dare jostle her. She knew all too well how awful dizziness could be.
Trapped in an awkward M-shaped sitting position, Xiaoxiao gritted her teeth as Meng Yuqing rested her head on her thighs, leaving her unable to shift.
Sigh.
By now, the worst of it had passed for Meng Yuqing. The initial agony had dulled, and she caught the faintest sigh from deep within Xiaoxiao’s mind though she couldn’t tell if it had been audible or just thought.
“What’s wrong?” Meng Yuqing murmured, eyes still closed.
Xiaoxiao stared at her, speechless. What’s wrong? You’re the one acting like you’re dying, and now my legs are going numb!
“Your legs are going numb?” Meng Yuqing chuckled.
Xiaoxiao’s heart skipped a beat. How did she know what I was thinking?!
Noticing the reaction, Meng Yuqing cracked an eye open. Their gazes met, and Xiaoxiao blurted, “You, you know what I’m thinking? Can you read minds?”
“Of course not,” Meng Yuqing evaded, flashing a pained grimace for cover. “Ugh, so dizzy hurts.”
Instantly distracted, Xiaoxiao fretted, “A-Are you okay?! We should go to the hospital!”
“No need.” Meng Yuqing’s eyes flicked toward the system watching smugly from the sidelines. “Even if it hates me, it can’t kill me.”
“Huh?” Xiaoxiao assumed she meant her and protested, “I-I might not like you, but I’d never want you dead! That’s illegal!”
“Oh.” Meng Yuqing’s reply was airy.
System 666: Tough talk. But seeing you suffer is satisfaction enough.
Meng Yuqing: Glad to entertain. Meanwhile, I’m half-dead here.
System 666: I don’t care if you’re half-dead. Only if you obey. Follow my rules, and you won’t be punished. But you keep defying me.
Meng Yuqing smirked coldly. Typical system. Just an AI, ruthless, emotionless. No charm, only coercion.
Xiaoxiao watched her sneer at the ceiling as if addressing someone unseen. Uneasy, she followed her gaze but found nothing.
“Meng Yuqing!” Xiaoxiao’s voice trembled. “Are you, hallucinating? Who are you smiling at?”
Meng Yuqing rolled her eyes toward her, then seeing Xiaoxiao’s panic couldn’t resist teasing. “I think, I see heaven.”
“Heaven?!” Xiaoxiao went rigid with horror. No way, Is this a deathbed vision?!
“Oh my god, this is a bit scary,” Zhong Xiaoxiao had never seen someone die before. Now that she thought about the villainous female supporting character dying right in front of her, she started to feel afraid. “Y-you’re talking nonsense, let’s go to the hospital. Get up!”
Meng Yuqing: “I have one last wish before I die.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao: …
