I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 44
Zhong Xiaoxiao was still trembling after the heart-stopping scene she had just experienced. Returning to the classroom, her pulse hadn’t quite settled. Girls these days were just too fierce. Meng Yuqing had slapped someone without hesitation clean, decisive, and utterly ruthless. Truly befitting a villainous female supporting character. Combat power: S-rank.
Noticing the change in Zhong Xiaoxiao’s gaze, Meng Yuqing chuckled lightly. “Wasn’t I just so cool?”
Alright, fine Zhong Xiaoxiao had to admit she was cool. But seeing her so smug made Zhong Xiaoxiao reluctant to indulge her. She shrugged nonchalantly. “It was alright.”
“I helped you out. How are you going to thank me?” Meng Yuqing demanded payment.
“Ah…” Zhong Xiaoxiao faltered, suddenly realizing she had nothing to offer. Someone as wealthy as Meng Yuqing, what could she possibly want from her?
“What do you want?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked anyway.
“Let’s consider it an IOU for now.” Meng Yuqing slung an arm around her shoulders, leaning in to whisper in her ear, “I don’t think they’ll let this go. You’d better stick with me. I’ll protect you.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao found the phrase “I’ll protect you” incredibly strange. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Meng Yuqing’s “protection” came with invisible quotation marks. Since when was a villainous female supporting character this kind? Or was Meng Yuqing one of those people, the type who thought, I’m the only one allowed to bully her, no one else?
As if reading her mind, Meng Yuqing grinned and agreed. “Exactly. Only I get to bully you. No one else is allowed.”
“……” Zhong Xiaoxiao stared at her, baffled. She didn’t dare ask if Meng Yuqing could actually read minds, how else would she know what she was thinking? Asking would be an indirect admission, and knowing Meng Yuqing’s temperament, she’d never let it go.
Meng Yuzhou watched as Zhong Xiaoxiao and his sister got along like close friends again, his emotions tangled.
Both of them had moved on. The only one still trapped was him.
Still relying on sleeping pills to get through the night, Meng Yuzhou felt a chill settle in his chest. He wanted to reach out to the girl he loved, but an insurmountable chasm had opened between them. The person on the other side seemed so distant like the moon in the sky, forever out of reach.
Zhong Xiaoxiao treated him the same as always, her unchanged demeanor too natural to be faked. Meng Yuzhou often wondered if she had ever truly liked him at all.
If that was the case, why had she agreed to be with him in the first place? Why had she been willing to throw everything away just to stay together?
Maybe… she just hadn’t liked him that much?
In love, the one who loved more was the loser. Because they loved more, they feared loss more, constantly torn between hope and despair.
Heartbroken and dejected, Meng Yuzhou couldn’t help but feel resentful. He refused to accept that she didn’t care for him.
He had been the one to propose the breakup, yet now he was the one regretting it.
His reason had been fear fear that his sister would hurt her. But look at them now, getting along so harmoniously. His sister wouldn’t hurt her, right?
Meng Yuzhou’s thoughts spiraled into chaos. He wasn’t sure, what if his sister was only behaving because she knew they’d broken up? What if he got back together with Zhong Xiaoxiao and triggered her again…?
He didn’t dare dwell on it. He didn’t dare take the risk.
If he ever had to see two lifeless bodies… he would lose his mind.
Lost and confused, Meng Yuzhou was drowning in turmoil.
And in the midst of it all, he ran into Gan Qingyun again.
Gan Qingyun walked ahead down the stairs when suddenly her foot slipped. She let out a startled cry as her body tilted backward. “Careful!” Seeing this, Meng Yuzhou rushed forward in urgency and caught her.
Gan Qingyun tumbled into an embrace, her heart still pounding from the fright. When she looked up, the face she’d been dreaming of day and night filled her vision.
She couldn’t help but linger on that face, on this embrace.
“Are you okay?” Meng Yuzhou helped her steady herself, asking with concern.
“I’m fine,” Gan Qingyun replied, a blush coloring her cheeks. “Thank you.”
Meng Yuzhou recognized her lingering feelings from this reaction. He’d never seen Zhong Xiaoxiao display this kind of shy demeanor around a lover. As he gazed at Gan Qingyun’s face, his mind wandered to fantasies of Zhong Xiaoxiao.
Noticing his stare, Gan Qingyun gave an awkward smile. “I heard you and Zhong Xiaoxiao are together now…”
“We’re not together,” Meng Yuzhou denied, his eyes still on her. “I think… you’re more outstanding.”
“…” These words sent waves of joy through Gan Qingyun’s heart, but she suppressed her desire to reconcile and instead said lightly, “Do we only realize what we had after losing it?”
“Yeah,” Meng Yuzhou agreed, “That’s right. We only learn to cherish things after losing them.” An ambiguous atmosphere grew between them.
Leaning against the balcony with arms crossed, Du Lingyan watched the pair at the stairwell corner with displeasure.
“Aren’t all those named Meng just the worst?” Li Shiting appeared beside her, following her gaze before sneering inwardly.
“Boss, she’s not like us,” Xie Baojun said to Du Lingyan, unable to suppress his longing yet filled with awe toward her. “Let’s… kick her out of the picture…”
Du Lingyan shot him an unhappy look, making Xie Baojun lower his head. “Of course… only if… if that’s what you want…”
“I don’t want to.” With these words, Du Lingyan straightened up, took two steps forward, and kicked a desk outside the classroom flying. The loud crash created quite a commotion.
Everyone turned to look at her in alarm. Du Lingyan curled her lips in a wicked smile and said to the staring eyes, “Sorry, my foot slipped.”
After tossing out this line, she sauntered into the classroom with deliberate nonchalance.
“You really have no tact,” Li Shiting complained to Xie Baojun after Du Lingyan left. “Can’t you see Gan Qingyun is making moves and it’s pissing off the boss? And you had to go and add fuel to the fire.”
Xie Baojun was also irritated. “I’m just fucking frustrated.”
Li Shiting watched the two figures disappearing around the stairwell and said, “No need to be. There’s plenty of time ahead.”
“Hey, you’re smarter than me. Think of a way to get rid of Gan Qingyun.” Xie Baojun pinned his hopes on Li Shiting. Despite having half her face swollen, it didn’t hinder her scheming.
“I do have a method to help you drive her away,” Li Shiting said with a smug smile. “But you’ll have to do me a favor first.”
“Deal,” Xie Baojun agreed immediately. “If it gets that woman out of here, I’ll pluck the moon from the sky for you.”
“Promise made.” Li Shiting gave a cold snort as she saw Meng Yuqing emerge from the classroom.
Meng siblings, we’ll see about this.
“Meng Yuqing, I’m feeling a bit dizzy.” Zhong Xiaoxiao had no choice but to lean on Meng Yuqing as they walked.
“What’s wrong? Feeling dizzy?” Meng Yuqing held her with concern and asked, “Do you want to go to the school clinic?”
“Just a little dizzy…” Zhong Xiaoxiao felt strangely lightheaded. The air seemed filled with some pungent fragrance, what was that scent? It was so strong it made her want to sneeze.
