I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 37
The ringtone was Hong Jinyoung’s “Alive.” The moment its melancholic prelude played, it hit Zhong Xiaoxiao with such force that she momentarily felt transported back to the real world.
Her gaze instinctively followed the sound, where she saw one of the Meng family’s servants pick up the phone and step aside to answer. Just as Zhong Xiaoxiao was about to approach, another servant stopped her: “Miss Zhong, the young mistress has asked me to escort you back. This way, please.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao looked at her, then toward the servant who had already disappeared into the garden, feeling an inexplicable loneliness.
The coincidence struck her as uncanny, how could it be? The same ringtone, “Alive,” which had been her own in the real world. A song both sorrowful and hopeful.
Could it really appear in this book?
Settling into the Meng family’s car, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s thoughts remained fixated on that ringtone.
Was it possible that it was her actual phone? Had her phone somehow crossed into this book and been picked up by that servant…?
If she could find her phone, it might be the key. Then there would be hope of returning home.
Her mind raced with possibilities. She had stayed in this fictional world long enough, she wanted to go back.
Preoccupied with this idea, Zhong Xiaoxiao resolved to visit the Meng residence again to investigate.
Things had ended badly last time. Meng Yuzhou had inexplicably flown into a rage at her, the plot had truly derailed beyond recognition.
Now, she pondered how to justify another visit. She didn’t even know where the Meng estate was located; she’d need someone to take her there. Only by entering the mansion could she possibly interact with their servants again.
With Meng Yuzhou currently holding a grudge against her, he certainly wouldn’t bring her home. Her only option was Meng Yuqing. But Meng Yuqing’s health was poor, she had fainted recently for unknown reasons.
Zhong Xiaoxiao waited eagerly for the Meng siblings to return to school, but neither showed up. How frustrating.
She had never longed for their presence more than now.
Outside, the overcast sky suddenly unleashed a torrential downpour, as if someone were dumping buckets of water from above.
Watching the rain through the window, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt an unusual calm.
When Meng Yuqing reappeared, she was noticeably colder, exuding an aura that warned others to keep their distance.
Seeing her like this made Zhong Xiaoxiao hesitate.
Meng Yuzhou arrived too, but his demeanor had become listless, a far cry from the sunny, handsome young man she’d first met. His spirit seemed broken, as if something had crushed him.
Zhong Xiaoxiao wondered what could have happened to the siblings. On second thought, did it even concern her? Hadn’t she always been the victim here? Persecuted by the villainous female supporting character, dumped by the male lead, completely passive throughout.
Yet now the situation had reached another impasse. If both siblings ignored her, how could she visit their home to search for that phone?
Zhong Xiaoxiao thought: If the mountain won’t come to me, then I’ll go to the mountain. She had nothing to lose by being shameless, they were just kids after all. If it meant returning to her world, she was willing to do anything.
Meng Yuqing, overhearing Zhong Xiaoxiao’s thoughts, grew curious about how she planned to “go to the mountain.” She remained unmoved, waiting to see how far Zhong Xiaoxiao would take her initiative.
Having made up her mind, Zhong Xiaoxiao indeed became much bolder.
“Meng Yuqing~” she called out, turning to face her. Meng Yuqing raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
“Are you feeling better now?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked, seeing that Meng Yuqing was ignoring her, forcing herself to continue the awkward conversation.
“Mhm.” Meng Yuqing finally gave a slight response.
“I was actually a bit worried. You really scared me that day.”
As Zhong Xiaoxiao spoke, she caught sight of Meng Yuzhou returning out of the corner of her eye and immediately turned her head away, falling silent.
Compared to Meng Yuqing, Zhong Xiaoxiao was now more afraid of Meng Yuzhou. He seemed even crazier. Meng Yuqing was just the villainous female supporting character, Zhong Xiaoxiao had already gotten used to her antics. But Meng Yuzhou had once been such a kind-hearted young man, who would’ve thought he could be so terrifying when angry?
Seeing Zhong Xiaoxiao talking to his sister, Meng Yuzhou felt displeased. Right now, he just wanted his sister to stay as far away from Zhong Xiaoxiao as possible no, even further. He didn’t want them to have any contact at all. To avoid upsetting his sister, he no longer spoke to Zhong Xiaoxiao either. The two of them might as well have been strangers.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was experiencing the most awkward moment of her life. No one around her would acknowledge her. She felt utterly alone.
Ugh, at this point, she’d rather just go back to her own world! At least there, she had everything she was familiar with. Here, she only knew two people.
And they were both little brats.
In order to return to her own world as soon as possible, Zhong Xiaoxiao had no choice but to keep trying to warm up to Meng Yuqing despite her cold shoulder.
Zhong Xiaoxiao: “If you don’t mind, I’d like to come over to your place to do homework.”
Meng Yuqing: “I mind.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao: “Could you tutor me? My grades are terrible.”
Meng Yuqing: “No.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao: “Can I at least visit your house again? I didn’t get a good enough look last time. A country bumpkin like me was totally blown away by your mansion! I’d love to see it again.”
Meng Yuqing: “No.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao internally: Damn it, Meng Yuqing! She’s really pushing her luck! I could strangle her!
