I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 36
“Come on, come on,” Meng Yuqing half-dragged, half-pulled her into the family car.
Zhong Xiaoxiao felt like she was being kidnapped.
Meng Yuqing deliberately sat close to Zhong Xiaoxiao, making the spacious car interior feel cramped. Unable to bear it, Zhong Xiaoxiao put some distance between them and moved to the other end of the seat.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Meng Yuqing inching closer again, prompting Zhong Xiaoxiao to glare fiercely at her. “What are you doing?!” She bristled like an angry cat, hostility radiating off her.
“Nothing much,” Meng Yuqing stayed put, smiling at her. “Sitting so far apart makes it hard to talk.”
“I’m not deaf, I can hear you just fine!” Zhong Xiaoxiao snapped.
Meng Yuqing studied her furious expression. “Why so hostile? I haven’t done anything to you.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao thought, Who knows? You might drag someone down with you any second! How unfair would that be for me?!
Meng Yuqing, who overheard her thoughts, stiffened slightly. Drag someone down with me?
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Meng Yuqing apologized sincerely again. “That day, I slipped and fell on you by accident. I heard it hurt quite a bit, I really am sorry.”
“……” Even if you say that, I won’t forgive you. Zhong Xiaoxiao thought stubbornly.
“You won’t forgive me?” Meng Yuqing started moving closer again. Zhong Xiaoxiao’s alarm bells rang instantly. “Stay right where you are!”
“Alright, alright, I won’t move.” This time, Meng Yuqing behaved obediently.
Zhong Xiaoxiao glared at her, unsure what to say next. This villainous female supporting character was such a headache. She hadn’t even wanted to get in this car, yet Meng Yuqing had forced her inside.
Silence settled in the car.
Meng Yuqing leaned back against the seat, crossing her legs like a boss. Meanwhile, Zhong Xiaoxiao sat hunched, like a nervous mouse that had encountered a cat.
An awkward quiet stretched between them. Occasionally, Meng Yuqing would turn and flash Zhong Xiaoxiao a sweet smile, but each time, it sent chills down her spine. What evil scheme is she plotting now?
Time crawled by as if an entire century had passed before the car finally stopped.
“We’re here,” Meng Yuqing announced. “Let’s go.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao looked out the window and saw the Meng family’s luxurious mansion.
Wow. They’re seriously rich.
Once outside, the view opened up. The grand mansion stood imposingly in… Zhong Xiaoxiao glanced around, realizing she had no idea where they were. Damn, this place is kinda remote. How am I supposed to get back later?
“I’ll take you home later,” Meng Yuqing said, as if reading her mind.
At this point, there was nothing Zhong Xiaoxiao could do.
“Let’s go in,” Meng Yuqing beckoned.
Zhong Xiaoxiao followed her into the front garden, where servants came out to greet them.
“Welcome back, Young Miss.”
“Mn. Where’s my brother?”
“The Young Master is upstairs.”
“Tell him he has a visitor. Ask him to come down.”
Listening to their conversation, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt a little embarrassed when she realized they were talking about her.
This was her first time visiting such an esteemed household, it felt surreal.
The mansion was built in a lavish European palace style, extravagant and breathtaking. The interior was even more dazzling, adorned with gold accents that shimmered brilliantly.
No matter the era or culture, people just love gold, huh? Zhong Xiaoxiao mused.
Meng Yuqing tugged at her arm. “Come, sit down first.”
The two of them headed toward the sofa together when Meng Yuzhou came downstairs and saw Meng Yuqing holding Zhong Xiaoxiao’s hand. He froze for a moment.
It felt like a dream, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. He silently stared at them for a long while until Meng Yuqing’s cry of “Brother!” snapped him out of it.
“Zhong Xiaoxiao came to see you after hearing you were sick,” Meng Yuqing said, gesturing toward Zhong Xiaoxiao.
Zhong Xiaoxiao looked up at Meng Yuzhou on the stairs. The two of them locked eyes across the steps. Meng Yuzhou looked haggard and listless, clearly unwell.
After Meng Yuqing spoke, Zhong Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but murmur, “I came to check on you…”
Seeing his sister holding Zhong Xiaoxiao’s hand, Meng Yuzhou frowned slightly. A paranoid delusion formed in his mind, and suddenly, anger surged within him. He snapped at them, “Who told you to bring her here? Didn’t I say I already broke up with her?”
“Get her out of here!” Meng Yuzhou blurted out, unleashing his fury on them.
Zhong Xiaoxiao felt extremely awkward. Damn it, she had said she shouldn’t come. Being kicked out like this was beyond humiliating.
“Brother…” Meng Yuqing tried to smooth things over, but Meng Yuzhou roared at her, “Go! Get out! Don’t let me see her again!”
Now Meng Yuqing was pissed too. She complained to the system: Does the male lead have a screw loose? She came all this way to see him, and this is how he treats her?
System 666: Ugh, it’s ruined. We’re done. Totally done.
Meng Yuqing: Can the plot still be saved?
System 666: It’s all your fault! This mess is because of you! I’m punishing you! Punishing you! Aaargh!
The system, sensing the plot had derailed beyond repair, was furious. An electric whip materialized in its hand, and with a sharp crack, it lashed out at Meng Yuqing. A powerful surge of electricity coursed through her body, and she collapsed to the ground with a cry, as if struck by lightning.
“!” Zhong Xiaoxiao, who had been about to leave, saw Meng Yuqing suddenly collapse. Her heart pounded wildly.
“Meng Yuqing! What’s wrong?” Zhong Xiaoxiao rushed to help her up.
Seeing his sister fall, Meng Yuzhou’s heart clenched. He bounded down the stairs in a few strides, shoved Zhong Xiaoxiao aside, and pulled his sister up. “Xiaoqing, what happened?”
Meng Yuqing lay there, eyes wide and dazed, staring at the system. The system glared at her furiously: This is just a warning. If you dare mess up again, I won’t let you off so easily!
Seeing Meng Yuqing pale and unresponsive, Meng Yuzhou’s heart nearly stopped. “A doctor! Get a doctor now!!”
Chaos erupted in the mansion. Zhong Xiaoxiao was pushed aside, helpless as she watched the commotion.
Meng Yuqing might have been scheming and malicious, but she was still just a sixteen- or seventeen-year-old girl. Maybe she had just taken a wrong turn, she didn’t deserve to die… At that moment, Zhong Xiaoxiao was only worried about her life. The past suddenly didn’t seem so important anymore.
Ignored by everyone, Zhong Xiaoxiao trudged out of the mansion alone. The sky outside had already darkened.
She walked through the garden toward the gate when suddenly, a familiar ringtone echoed in the air. Hearing it, Zhong Xiaoxiao stiffened in shock.
