- Chapter 11 - The Unaware Older Sister
“I’ve come to pick up Lady Dahlia. Please pay me no mind.”
Lady Edith gave a soft smile, then shifted her gaze from my sister to me.
For my sister, Lady Edith’s reaction seemed unexpected. She spoke to my sister, who was standing there dumbfounded.
“Sister, you came to say goodbye to me, didn’t you?”
My sister seemed to come back to herself, shifting her gaze from Lady Edith to me and nodding.
“Y-yes, but…”
“Then is there any need to know who this person is?”
“B-but I need to tell Princess Edith that I’m entrusting you to her! Since I’m asking her to deliver an important message, isn’t it reasonable to know who I’m speaking to?”
My sister’s expression was desperate. She seemed determined not to let this opportunity slip away.
This was the first time I’d seen my sister like this, and also the first time I’d seen a man who didn’t respond to her. I felt like I was witnessing a historic moment.
This was probably the first time since she was born that my sister failed to captivate a man she had her sights on.
I was truly glad that Lady Edith wasn’t the type to be swayed by my sister’s physical charms.
“Are you that curious about who I am?”
“Yes. I want to know for Dahlia’s sake.”
It’s not really for my sake, is it?
Just as I was amazed at how easily she could tell such lies, Lady Edith seemed to have the same thought and let out a derisive laugh.
“For your sister… is that it?”
“Yes. I’m always thinking about Dahlia’s happiness.”
“…May I ask you a few questions?”
“Of course.”
My sister blushed and showed a gentle smile. It was the face of someone who believed that this smile would make the man before her fall for her.
However, Lady Edith showed no reaction to my sister’s smile and asked, “What were your thoughts about getting married?”
“What do you mean?”
“It was a marriage to someone with a bad reputation. Didn’t you ever want to refuse?”
“The bad reputation you mean is the rumor about the Monster Prince, right?”
My sister nodded, then gave Lady Edith an intense look.
“While I was happy that Prince Edith wanted me, I think someone more wonderful would be better suited to stand by my side.”
“You never met your former fiancé, did you? Does that mean you believed the bad rumors?”
“Yes. If he had a wonderful appearance, he would have appeared in public.”
“That’s remarkably simplistic thinking.”
“Eh?”
My sister looked confused as she asked this back.
She’d probably never been told something like this before, so maybe it couldn’t be helped.
There was a time when I thought I couldn’t even compare to my sister’s shadow, but now I don’t feel that way anymore.
“Let me confirm – while you couldn’t marry the Crown Prince of the Rofeus Kingdom due to the pirates, you weren’t particularly enthusiastic about marrying the Crown Prince in the first place, is that correct?”
“…Yes. As I said earlier, there should be someone more wonderful for me.”
“So, I understand correctly that you don’t want to marry the Crown Prince of the Rofeus Kingdom?”
“That’s right!”
Seeing my sister nod emphatically, I almost let a smile escape. Noticing this, Lady Edith smiled back, then turned her attention to Nana, who had been standing silently behind my sister this whole time.
Nana nodded and spoke to my sister.
“Would you mind writing something down for us?”
“…Alright.”
My sister looked puzzled about why Nana would ask such a thing, but not thinking deeply about things was typical of her. She obediently nodded.
Nana took a pen and paper from the drawing room shelf drawer and handed them to my sister.
“Please write down your earlier statements along with the date and your name here.”
“H-how should I write it?”
“First, please have a seat.”
Nana had my sister sit opposite me and made her write down the necessary information.
“I was disliked by more people than I thought,” I heard Lady Edith murmur, and I shared my honest feelings.
“In my case, I only thought those things because I was cornered. Not because I disliked you.”
I couldn’t speak in detail with my sister present. But Lady Edith seemed to understand what I was trying to say.
“Thank you.”
Lady Edith smiled, then returned to her strong expression.
“Well, if we’re going to do this, we might as well make it spectacular.”
“Indeed. Let’s change locations.”
Just as we finished our whispered discussion, my sister completed her signature.
Not only did it contain her statements, but it also clearly stated that since her engagement with Prince Edith had been dissolved, she would never seek to restore their relationship no matter what might happen.
Prince Edith, after confirming the content, date, and signature, showed a beaming smile.
“With this, your connection with the Crown Prince is completely severed. Congratulations!”
“Thank you!”
I spoke to my sister, who looked quite satisfied.
“Sister, I’m about to leave this place. If you have something to discuss, let’s do it in the entrance hall.”
“…Understood.”
My sister kept casting lingering glances at Lady Edith as she left the drawing room. Watching my sister, Nana let out a sigh.
“She’s really a woman who doesn’t think about anything.”
“The rumor is that she’s pure. Though she lies without hesitation.”
Nana said to Lady Edith, who looked exasperated, with an unhappy expression.
“I wouldn’t call someone who tells unnecessary lies ‘pure.'”
“That’s true too.”
Lady Edith nodded, then turned her eyes to me.
“Get ready to leave here with Nana. I’ll be waiting in the entrance hall.”
“Understood.”
My brother should come to see us off too. Maybe I’ll reveal the truth to my sister then.
This is the first time I’ve felt so exhilarated. With light steps, I left the drawing room with Nana and asked a maid in the hallway to escort Lady Edith to the entrance hall.
