How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 71.1
The air froze for a few seconds. Chen Yushu’s scalp prickled, and she instinctively averted her gaze from Lu Wei’s eyes.
Yet, this did little to ease her tension; instead, the uncertainty amplified it.
She waited anxiously for Lu Wei’s next words, for her reaction.
Holding her breath, she remained acutely aware of every inhale and exhale from the other side, afraid to miss even the slightest detail. Every cell in her body seemed on high alert.
“Chen Yushu, you’re finally awake. I called you ” Lu Wei’s voice was hoarse as she spoke, dragging out the words, “so many times.”
Chen Yushu’s breath hitched. Unable to resist, she lifted her eyes to glance at Lu Wei, only to find her expression unchanged. A slight daze washed over Chen Yushu, and her heart sank.
“How did you.” Lu Wei started to ask something but was immediately seized by a violent coughing fit.
Suppressing the turmoil in her heart, Chen Yushu got up and poured a glass of warm water. She stood by the bed, handing it to Lu Wei without a word.
After the coughing subsided, Lu Wei gasped for air and looked up at her. “I’m this pitiful, and you’re still so indifferent?”
Chen Yushu shot her a glare, set the cup down on the table, and said flatly, “What else? It’s not like you’re going to die.”
“Cough, cough.” Lu Wei’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Listen to yourself. What kind of thing is that to say?”
Hearing Lu Wei’s raspy voice, a wave of irritation surged in Chen Yushu’s chest, and she had no desire to engage with her further.
“Oh, I get it. Are you cough, cough worried I’ll burden you because I’m sick?”
Chen Yushu’s face hardened as she glared at Lu Wei. I shouldn’t have bothered with you last night letting you burn up would’ve been better!
Just then, her phone rang again. Answering it, she found Chen Sinan on the other end.
Chen Yushu: “She’s awake Not going. Lu Wei has a cold She should be better now, no fever Okay.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei touched her own forehead and looked at Chen Yushu in confusion. How does she know I had a fever?
Memories of the restless heat from her hazy state the day before resurfaced in her mind. Faint, fragmented images flickered, and Lu Wei frowned, trying to grasp even a sliver of those blurred scenes.
But the moment she tried to delve deeper, a dull ache began to throb in her head.
As Chen Yushu hung up, she noticed Lu Wei sitting up, her complexion pale. She hurried over and felt her forehead. “What’s wrong?”
A familiar scene suddenly flashed through Lu Wei’s mind. Her frown deepened as she turned to Chen Yushu, her eyes filled with doubt.
“Where does it hurt?” Chen Yushu asked. “Have you lost your voice?”
“Huh? It’s nothing.” Startled, Lu Wei shrank back.
Chen Yushu withdrew her hand, studying her with a puzzled look for a moment before fetching a thermometer. “Put this under your arm properly.”
Lu Wei craned her neck to look. “Where did this come from?”
“Why do you care so much?” Chen Yushu rolled her eyes and shook the thermometer vigorously, as if trying to fling someone’s head off.
“So fierce.” Lu Wei took it and obediently tucked it under her arm. “Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?”
Chen Yushu snorted in annoyance, though she couldn’t quite explain why the sight of Lu Wei irritated her so much now.
A few minutes later, she checked the thermometer and saw that the fever had subsided significantly. “Lie down. After you eat, take your medicine.”
Lu Wei nodded meekly and agreed.
With that, Chen Yushu leaned against the bed and began browsing nearby delivery options, planning to order some congee for Lu Wei.
Images of delicious food slid past her fingertips, but Chen Yushu’s attention gradually drifted to last night.
Judging by Lu Wei’s reaction this morning, it wasn’t hard to guess that dog Lu Wei had forgotten again.
Just like on the night of their high school graduation.
That dog! That bastard!
She should have slapped him awake last night, smacked some sense into that jerk!
The more Chen Yushu thought about it, the more stifled she felt. Her jaw tightened, and anger blazed in her eyes.
Catching a glimpse of someone in her peripheral vision only annoyed her further, so she simply turned over.
Unbeknownst to her, Lu Wei was also recalling last night.
Or rather, speculating about it.
The events of the previous night felt veiled in a thin haze, blurring the line between reality and dream, leaving her momentarily confused.
Frustrated, Lu Wei shifted her focus to observing Chen Yushu.
However, all she could see was the back of Chen Yushu’s head, her emotions unreadable.
Just then, the food delivery arrived, and Chen Yushu got up to retrieve it.
Lu Wei quickly averted her gaze, only daring to sneak a peek through half-lidded eyes.
“Hurry up and eat,” Chen Yushu said, placing the food on the table with her back turned.
“Okay.”
Still feverish, Lu Wei felt weak all over. As soon as her feet touched the floor, she stumbled and plopped back onto the bed.
Hearing the noise, Chen Yushu glanced back and urged, “Hurry up.”
“I have no strength,” Lu Wei whined pitifully, extending a limp hand.
Chen Yushu pursed her lips expressionlessly. “If you have no strength, then don’t eat. Just lie there and starve.”
Lu Wei immediately complained indignantly, “Chen Yushu, how can you be like this?”
“What’s wrong with me?” Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow slightly, her tone tinged with irritation.
“You.” Lu Wei opened her mouth but hesitated before muttering under her breath, “You don’t care about me at all, whether I live or die.”
Chen Yushu snorted quietly but didn’t respond.
Lu Wei let her hand drop dejectedly, stood up, and slowly made her way to the table, leaning against the bed for support.
They sat facing each other, the only sound being that of eating.
Bland white porridge entered Lu Wei’s mouth, and she swallowed mechanically, her mind entirely focused on the person across from her.
What’s wrong with Chen Yushu? Last night, everything was fine, and I’m this sick.
Wait! Last night?
Lu Wei paused mid-motion, half a mouthful of porridge stuck in her throat.
It can’t be?! Could it be that last night she really.
“Cough, cough, cough.” Lu Wei’s entire body grew hot, her forehead burning even more.
Once this suspicion took root, it refused to subside.
Panic surged within Lu Wei, and she completely lost her appetite. Clenching the spoon between her teeth, she couldn’t take another sip.
So, is Chen Yushu angry because of this?
“Tch!”
Lu Wei thumped her own head, cursing herself inwardly.
“Ugh!”
She tugged at her hair, overwhelmed with regret.
Just then, the person across from her set her chopsticks down with a clatter. Chen Yushu lifted her gaze. “If you’re going to eat, then eat. Why are you making all these weird noises?”
Lu Wei shot her a guilty glance but didn’t argue, silently scooping up more porridge to continue eating.
Silence fell between them, broken only by the sound of spoons clinking against bowls.
Glancing up unintentionally, Lu Wei noticed Chen Yushu leaning back in her chair, no longer eating. She couldn’t help but ask, “Why aren’t you eating anymore?”
“You’ve made me lose my appetite,” Chen Yushu replied without looking at her.
Hearing this, Lu Wei’s heart sank. It’s over Chen Yushu really is angry.
Thinking back to what she had done last night, though the memories were still hazy, it was enough to drive her crazy.
Kissing and rubbing against her like that This,
Lu Wei closed her eyes, feeling she no longer had the face to face Chen Yushu.
“Are you done eating?”
Chen Yushu’s voice broke through Lu Wei’s thoughts.
“Y-yes, I’m done.” Lu Wei’s breath hitched instantly. “Um.”
Chen Yushu stood up and began clearing the takeout containers. “Hmm?”
Lu Wei shook her head and stood up as well.
“Then go take your medicine? Why are you staring at me? Do you want me to feed it to you?”
Her temper was really flaring she must be truly angry. Lu Wei swallowed nervously and meekly replied, “Okay.”
After fetching some water, Lu Wei sat on the edge of the bed, watching Chen Yushu’s figure. Her mind was in turmoil, and she felt extremely uncomfortable.
Maybe she should just apologize directly?
But what if bringing it up made Chen Yushu even angrier?
Lu Wei bit her lip, her gaze drifting toward Chen Yushu more and more frequently.
Maybe she should test the waters first and see how Chen Yushu reacted?
“Why are you still sitting there?” Chen Yushu turned around and glanced at her.
“Um.” Lu Wei touched her nose, cleared her throat, and spoke cautiously, “It’s just last night, I had such a high fever that some things feel a bit hazy. Could it have been a dream?”
After listening to Lu Wei’s stammering words, Chen Yushu understood. Her heart tightened abruptly, and she suddenly didn’t know what to say.
Lu Wei was equally anxious, her tension escalating, and she held her breath without realizing it.
“What are you talking about? How would I know what you dreamed?” Chen Yushu replied as calmly as she could.
“Huh?” Lu Wei looked up at her in surprise, thought for a moment, and rephrased, “Then I probably didn’t do anything.”
“What?” Chen Yushu’s expression remained unchanged. “What did you do?”
Lu Wei frowned slightly in confusion, studying Chen Yushu’s expression closely. Her eyes lit up, and she breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness! That scared me to death! It really was just a dream!”
For some reason, hearing those words made Chen Yushu’s heart sink, and her throat tightened. “What dream?”
“Nothing!” Lu Wei quickly denied. “Just a dream.”
Chen Yushu’s breathing grew slightly faster without her realizing it. “Really? What kind of dream was so terrifying?”
“A nightmare! It was horrifying!” Lu Wei said gravely. It was definitely a nightmare if you knew, you’d probably kill me.
However, in her moment of relief, she completely missed the strange look on Chen Yushu’s face.
A nightmare? Terrifying? Horrifying?
Those words echoed in her mind, and as she saw Lu Wei’s relieved expression, Chen Yushu stood frozen, struggling to breathe.
She didn’t want to dwell on it, but a suffocating feeling had already enveloped her thoughts.
A moment later, she suddenly felt disgusted with herself the faint anticipation she had felt upon waking up.
Her lips were nearly bitten through, and the faint taste of blood spread in her mouth.
Really!
The left side of Chen Yushu’s face flushed red with what could only be described as self-mockery.
Finally relaxing, Lu Wei took a sip of water and glanced at the medicine on the cabinet. She picked up two pills and put them in her mouth, but suddenly felt something was off.
In a daze, she remembered taking medicine last night too, and someone had given her water.
What happened after that,
Staring at the pills in her hand, Lu Wei’s mind went blank, as if she had been struck by a blow, and she suddenly became fully alert.
Just then, the sugar coating on the cold medicine dissolved, and a bitter taste instantly filled her mouth. Lu Wei grimaced from the bitterness and quickly gulped down several mouthfuls of water to wash it away.
Looking up at Chen Yushu again, Lu Wei’s eyelids twitched uncontrollably, her heart filled with overwhelming guilt.
She had intended to seek confirmation once more, but as the words reached her lips, her thoughts took a sudden turn.
Why was Chen Yushu keeping everything to herself after waking up? When she had asked her earlier, it seemed like Chen Yushu didn’t want to admit anything either.
Lu Wei’s lips drooped, unable to suppress the disappointment in her heart.
The bitter taste of medicine still lingered at the back of her tongue. Lu Wei set down the water glass, no longer drinking.
If that’s how it was, she would pretend nothing had happened.
Originally, they had planned to stay for a couple of days after the performance, but because Lu Wei fell ill and Chen Yushu was still simmering with anger not wanting to go out with her at all Chen Yushu bought high-speed train tickets home for the very next day.
Returning home early, she forgot to inform her mother. The moment she stepped inside, her mother was pleasantly surprised for a moment before scolding her lightly, “You didn’t even say you were coming back. You’re becoming more and more like your sister.”
“I managed to get tickets for today, so I just came back,” Chen Yushu explained.
“Well, that’s fine. You can spend a few more days at home,” her mother said, taking her luggage and carrying it to her room. “Oh, didn’t Lu Wei come with you?”
“No, hasn’t she already moved?” Chen Yushu replied, thinking to herself, the farther she moved, the better so she wouldn’t have to see her and feel annoyed.
But her mother seemed surprised. “Her mom came over to clean a few days ago.”
Thinking of their previous agreement, Chen Yushu’s heart softened involuntarily, but she quickly snapped back to reality, feeling it was all unnecessary.
Even more unnecessary were Lu Wei’s feelings.
That night, lying in her familiar bed, Chen Yushu couldn’t fall asleep.
Just then, Jiang Yuran sent her a message: 【How was the performance? Any photos?】
Chen Yushu found some photos in her album and sent them over. 【It rained, so I didn’t take many.】
【Ahhh! So cool! May I ask, what’s the relationship between your sister and this person? Doge.jpg】
【Don’t overthink it. They’re just very, very good friends.】
【Alright then.】
Very, very good friends?
