How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 64
The next day, on Friday, Chen Yushu received an exquisitely packaged gift box.
She didn’t need to guess who it was from. Hmph, resorting to these little tricks again. Chen Yushu curled her lips in mild disdain and casually placed the box on her desk without giving it another thought.
However, it immediately caught the attention of everyone in the dorm, who eagerly asked what was inside.
Chen Yushu replied, “I don’t know. It’s from Lu Wei.”
“Can we open it?” Ye Chiwan leaned close to the gift box, her face full of curiosity. “The box itself is so beautifully wrapped imagine what’s inside! I really want to see. Shushu, please open it and let us take a peek!”
Truth be told, Chen Yushu was also a little curious about the contents. Encouraged by the others, she couldn’t resist untying the silk ribbon.
Ye Chiwan stood nearby, chattering nonstop, “Honestly, if I didn’t know Lu Wei always goes all out like this, I’d suspect it was from some secret admirer of yours.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu’s hands paused as she unwrapped the box, and a strange, inexplicable feeling stirred within her, making her heartbeat quicken slightly.
When the rectangular box was opened, a light blue dress came into view. Chen Yushu’s eyes widened in surprise it was not what she had expected.
At the same time, gasps of astonishment erupted around her. Ye Chiwan rubbed her hands together excitedly and urged, “Hurry, take it out and let’s see!”
Snapping back to reality, Chen Yushu carefully lifted the dress from the box. The fabric, smooth as silk, cascaded down, reaching mid-calf, with a delicate ribbon cinching the waist a perfect blend of simplicity and elegance.
Trying to reconcile with her using this? Dream on! Chen Yushu snorted and was about to put it back.
“Hey, there’s a card inside too,” Jiang Yuran pointed out, gesturing toward the box.
Hearing this, Chen Yushu glanced over curiously and indeed found a card of the same color lying at the bottom.
As she picked it up, the others immediately crowded around, speculating about what might be written on it.
Opening it, she saw Lu Wei’s handwriting. Using some flowery, overly formal language she must have picked up somewhere, the card extended an invitation for Chen Yushu to join her for a meal at a restaurant over the weekend.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, I really can’t take this!” Ye Chiwan couldn’t hold back after reading the message, clutching her arms and shuddering dramatically.
Jiang Yuran looked at her, amused. “Look at that ugly expression on your face.”
“So what if jealousy is making me unrecognizable!” Ye Chiwan wailed. “Heavens, why is it that some people have friends who give them pretty dresses and treat them to meals, while my friends can only babble nonsense? Why is life so unfair!”
“Your friend is really good to you,” Xia Ke couldn’t help but add.
Chen Yushu curled her lips slightly, thinking to herself, What’s so good about it? She’s the one who gave me the silent treatment.
“Whoa, this restaurant looks pretty upscale!” Jiang Yuran had searched for photos of the place on her phone and showed them to everyone.
“Ahhh, this cake looks absolutely delicious!” Ye Chiwan stared at the photo of the dessert, swallowing her saliva eagerly. “Shushu, would you mind an extra guest?”
Chen Yushu couldn’t help but laugh. “I haven’t decided if I’m going yet.”
“Why not?” Xia Ke asked, puzzled. “Wouldn’t it be perfect to go after finishing experiments during the day?”
Only Jiang Yuran knew the real situation. She shook her head helplessly and waited until they were alone to ask, “Are you really not going?”
“Mm,” Chen Yushu closed the card and nodded hesitantly.
“Don’t bail!” Jiang Yuran urged. “Aren’t you even a little curious about what she’ll do?”
“What else could it be besides a meal?” Even as she said this, Chen Yushu’s expression clearly showed she was wavering.
All day Saturday, Chen Yushu felt restless. Though she tried her best to control it, her mind kept drifting back to that dress, and after finishing her experiments, the thoughts reached a peak.
Back in her dorm, it was already 5 p.m. an hour and a half left until the time Lu Wei had set. Half an hour to shower, half an hour for makeup, then grab a cab,
What was she thinking? Chen Yushu snapped out of it, shaking her head vigorously. She wasn’t going!
Suddenly remembering something, she opened her phone and checked for messages. Seeing nothing from a certain someone, she was about to close it when a little red notification dot appeared at the bottom. As if guided by instinct, she tapped it immediately.
It really was a post from Lu Wei a sticker of a puppy with the caption: “Since I don’t know if you’re still mad, I’m sending a puppy to check first.”
What nonsense is this? Chen Yushu let out a sound of disgust, but the puppy in the picture was undeniably cute, and her heart softened a little.
Fine, for the puppy’s sake.
She showered and dried her hair, watching the minutes tick by. To her surprise, Lu Wei’s feed kept updating.
Considerate puppy reminds you: time to head out!
No refusing allowed. Refuse and you’re a puppy.
Chen Yushu lingered on the screen, refreshing it from time to time. “Stop rushing me, it’s annoying.”
By 7 p.m., Chen Yushu had arrived at the destination. The moment she stepped out of the car, regret washed over her. She stood outside the restaurant, hesitating to go in.
Walking in just like that would feel like she was the one making amends. Wouldn’t that be embarrassing? Chen Yushu twisted her fingers, feeling conflicted.
After a moment’s thought, she pulled out her phone and checked the feed again. Lu Wei had posted a crying puppy sticker, looking both sweet and pitiful.
Using a puppy to gain sympathy? What a cheap trick! Chen Yushu huffed in annoyance but took a few steps toward the restaurant entrance. A server spotted her and hurried over to ask, “Good evening, ma’am. Do you have a reservation?”
Chen Yushu hadn’t made up her mind yet and felt the urge to turn around and leave.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, a figure suddenly rushed over bright and vivid like a flame.
Lu Wei was wearing a red dress with a fiery hibiscus flower pinned at her neck. The hem of the dress was longer in the front and shorter in the back, her chestnut hair flowing freely behind her. On her feet were white flats, and as she ran, her skirt and hair fluttered together, setting the warm evening breeze ablaze.
The surroundings seemed to fade into the background. Chen Yushu’s breath caught as she stared, mesmerized, at the only vibrant sight in her vision.
“You came?”
A faint, delicate fragrance drifted into Chen Yushu’s senses. She snapped back to reality, suddenly feeling awkward, and stiffly averted her gaze. “I was just passing by.”
Lu Wei didn’t challenge her excuse. Instead, she smiled and looked Chen Yushu over carefully, restraining her tone as she said, “You look so beautiful today.”
Chen Yushu didn’t know how to respond, only growing more flustered. “I, you stop it. I didn’t plan to.”
Just then, Lu Wei clasped her hands behind her back, leaned in slightly, and took a light sniff near her. “You even wore perfume. It smells lovely.”
“You’re so annoying!” Chen Yushu couldn’t take it anymore. She jerked her head up and glared at Lu Wei.
Yet, she immediately met a pair of exceptionally bright eyes, brimming with all sorts of emotions, spilling out unrestrained.
Chen Yushu’s heart skipped a beat. Whether it was the sultry night breeze or not, her cheeks felt strangely warm as it brushed past her face.
“What do you want?” Chen Yushu brushed her hair aside, trying to mask her unease.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m chasing.” Lu Wei nearly blurted out the truth in a moment of thoughtlessness, her expression shifting as she hastily stopped herself.
“What?” Chen Yushu raised her eyebrows slightly, looking at her in surprise.
Lu Wei pursed her lips guiltily, her mind racing. “I’m chasing after you to make up.”
“Oh.” Chen Yushu shot her a glare. “I don’t care. I’d rather never see you again.”
“How can you say that?” Lu Wei breathed a sigh of relief but couldn’t help feeling a pang of disappointment. She pouted and gently nudged the back of Chen Yushu’s hand. “Let’s stop fighting and make up, okay? Please?”
“No.” Chen Yushu arched an eyebrow, turned her head away, and snorted.
Lu Wei tilted her head to look at Chen Yushu’s profile and couldn’t resist saying, “Chen Yushu, you’re so cute.”
“Are you insane?” Chen Yushu widened her eyes, her cheeks flushing red.
“Oh, come on.” Lu Wei took her hand and pulled her along. “We just had a tiny, tiny disagreement. Don’t make it seem like we broke up or something.”
Chen Yushu shook off her hand. “Get lost! Break up? I wouldn’t even be with you in the first place!”
“Really?” Lu Wei glanced at her, testing the waters. “Do you hate me that much?”
Chen Yushu let out a noncommittal “Hmph.”
“Fine.” Lu Wei sighed helplessly, but after a few seconds, she asked again, “Then what type do you like?”
“None of your business!” Chen Yushu glared at her retreating back, annoyed. “What’s it to you?”
“How is it none of my business?” Lu Wei turned around, her tone teasing. “I’ll try to become more like the type you like.”
Chen Yushu’s heart tightened. She couldn’t tell if Lu Wei was just joking or if there was something more to her words. She scrutinized the look in Lu Wei’s eyes. “You’re insane.”
Lu Wei chuckled. “Is that the only thing you know how to say?”
“You really are insane!”
Soon, the two entered the restaurant and took their seats. Beside them was a large floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the most dazzling night view of Yuncheng.
The sounds of piano and violin played softly, the beautiful melody flowing gently through the hall.
Dishes were served one after another, their enticing aromas instantly captivating Chen Yushu’s senses. The next moment, her stomach rumbled right on cue.
Lu Wei poured a bit of fruit wine into a glass and handed it to Chen Yushu. “Drink this, and we’ll make up. We’ll walk together for a lifetime, got it?”
“…” Chen Yushu gave her a lazy glance and then started eating from her plate without another word.
“Chen Yushu!” Lu Wei called her name, a little displeased. “Why are you so hard to coax?”
“Cough.” Chen Yushu nearly choked on her food at that. She wiped her mouth and asked deliberately, “Why would you need to coax me?”
“You’re still pretending!” Lu Wei set the glass down on the table, putting on a pitiful, whiny expression. “Just make up with me, please? Make up with me… be with me.”
Chen Yushu couldn’t take it anymore and lightly smacked her head. “I’m trying to eat. Shut up.”
“Then be with me after you finish eating.”
“Who wants to be with you?” Chen Yushu was amused, her brows and eyes instantly relaxing.
The light fell on Chen Yushu’s face, creating a beauty that was both gentle and breathtaking. Lu Wei’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly lowered her head to hide her reaction, then randomly picked up something with her chopsticks and stuffed it into her mouth. Only after chewing did she realize it was a piece of garlic.
“Yuck!” Lu Wei’s face scrunched up, and she hurriedly took a large sip from her glass. The taste still lingered when she noticed Chen Yushu had set her glass down, so she snatched it and downed the rest in one go.
“What’s wrong with you?” Chen Yushu gave her a puzzled look. “Don’t drink too much. This fruit wine has a pretty high alcohol content.”
Lu Wei waved it off dismissively. “It’s fine. Tastes just like juice.”
However, it didn’t take long for the alcohol to kick in. Lu Wei’s cheeks flushed red, and her head began to feel heavy and muddled. Propping her chin on her hand, she gazed quietly at Chen Yushu, her eyes both dazed and bright.
Feeling the increasingly intense stare from across the table, even the simple act of eating became difficult. Chen Yushu bit her chopsticks, looked up, and was about to scold her.
But the moment her eyes met Lu Wei’s, she flinched as if burned, shrinking back slightly.
Taking a closer look, she noticed Lu Wei’s eyes were hazy and unfocused clearly drunk.
Chen Yushu steadied herself, held her breath, and hid in the dim light, trying to steal a glance at her as if nothing were amiss.
As if sensing her gaze, Lu Wei’s eyes curved into a smile.
Chen Yushu’s expression remained unchanged, though her grip on the chair tightened slightly. Seeing Lu Wei’s smile grow increasingly mischievous, she couldn’t help but snap, “What are you looking at?”
Hearing this, Lu Wei brushed the hair from her forehead in confusion, her round eyes full of bewilderment.
“Keep drinking, and I’ll leave you here while I go by myself!” Chen Yushu threatened, brandishing a fork.
The next moment, Lu Wei pushed herself up from the table, swaying unsteadily as she stood.
“What are you doing?” Chen Yushu panicked, rising to her feet and instinctively assuming a protective stance.
Seeing this, Lu Wei threw herself into Chen Yushu’s arms, mumbling that she needed to use the restroom.
“What a hassle,” Chen Yushu sighed, looking down at the person leaning against her chest before resignedly wrapping her arms around her and heading to the restroom.
After helping her inside, Chen Yushu waited outside the bathroom. A while later, there was a knock from inside, accompanied by a slurred call of her name.
“Shushu, where are you Shushu, Why did you disappear.”
“Stop calling,” Chen Yushu said firmly from outside the door. “Hurry up and open it.”
The noise inside ceased instantly. The next second, the door opened, and Lu Wei stumbled out. The moment she saw Chen Yushu, she immediately went limp and collapsed against her.
“You!” Chen Yushu shot her a glance, then turned her head away in disgust.
“Shushu, you’re so good to me,” Lu Wei murmured, nestling into the crook of her neck with a soft laugh. After a long pause, she suddenly leaned close to Chen Yushu’s ear and whispered mysteriously, “I have a secret to tell you.”
Chen Yushu took the bait. “What secret?”
“Shh.” Lu Wei lifted her head and glanced around. “Come closer. This can’t be told to Chen Yushu.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu perked up. “Oh? What is it? Does it have to do with her?”
“Yeah!” Lu Wei nodded emphatically.
Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow and asked softly, “What is it?”
