How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 51
Just waking up, Chen Yushu still felt somewhat drowsy. Her eyelids felt as if they were glued shut, and she closed them again.
Seizing the opportunity, Lu Wei abruptly sat up straight and took several steps back, preemptively explaining as if to cover up her actions, “I was just about to cover you with the blanket.”
A moment later, Chen Yushu turned over, opened her eyes, and stared quietly at her without saying a word.
Lu Wei felt her heart leap into her throat, so nervous she kept swallowing. “Wh-what’s wrong?”
After another long pause, Chen Yushu frowned slightly, let out a vague sound, then closed her eyes, turned over, and seemed to fall back asleep.
Lu Wei’s taut nerves suddenly relaxed. As she breathed a sigh of relief, she couldn’t help but wonder did Chen Yushu notice anything just now?
Instantly, her heart tightened again.
She stood frozen in place for a long time, only turning stiffly around when she heard the sound of steady breathing. She thought to herself, she probably didn’t notice.
The sketch was almost finished, but Lu Wei, pencil in hand, stared blankly into the void, her mind completely empty. Waves of confusion and panic washed over her.
The overwhelming emotions had drained too much of her energy, and before long, Lu Wei leaned back exhaustedly in her chair. When she lifted her head slightly, her gaze met the person on the bed.
What in the world is going on?
A dense tangle of emotions enveloped her. Lu Wei could no longer hold it together and frantically ruffled her hair. What should she do now?
For the moment, she couldn’t face Chen Yushu at all. She tilted her head back, closed her eyes in agony, and sank into her own darkness as a jumble of thoughts flooded her mind.
I don’t like women at all.
I’m straight.
I can’t accept it after all, I’m not gay.
Thinking back to the confident declarations she’d made before, Lu Wei felt as if her face had been slapped hard. Her cheeks quickly heated up, and a pained expression flashed across her face. She curled her lips in self-mockery.
The “True Fragrance Law” had arrived, albeit a bit late.
You really shouldn’t speak in absolutes!
Who would have thought that not only would she fall for a woman, but she’d fall for her best friend?
This is just terrible! Who wouldn’t sigh at the twists of fate?
The pencil in her hand snapped. Lu Wei’s composure shattered again and again, and she had no mind to care. She gritted her teeth, wishing she could scream a couple of times to vent.
But now that things had come to this, what else could she do?
Lu Wei sighed. Fine, fine. Let it be for now.
However, she absolutely couldn’t let Chen Yushu find out otherwise, she’d become the second Wen Yan.
Thinking of this, Lu Wei couldn’t help but sigh. The wheel of fate turns, what goes around comes around!
Wait, how did she even fall for Chen Yushu? Lu Wei’s heart churned with countless thoughts. Just as she was about to ponder it, she felt a wave of heat wash over her. She quickly fanned herself with her hand, but the tips of her ears quietly flushed red.
Disgusted, Lu Wei covered her face and muttered a self-deprecating curse. The next second, as if struck by a thought, the corners of her mouth lifted involuntarily, and she bit her lip shyly.
In that brief moment, the heat in her face intensified, and her ears turned so red they seemed to drip blood.
Lu Wei sat up, brushed her hair back, and somewhat guiltily raised her phone to look at herself in the camera. After just one second, she quickly put it down.
A moment later, she lowered her head and stole another embarrassed glance at her reflection.
It’s over! Lu Wei thought, on the verge of tears. She really had fallen for Chen Yushu!
No way! I can’t let Chen Yushu see me like this!
Lu Wei nervously glanced inside and, seeing that Chen Yushu was still asleep, immediately breathed a sigh of relief. She quickly fanned her face, trying to cool down the heat on her cheeks.
But the more she did this, the more it backfired.
Ahhh, can’t I have a little more self-control?!
Screaming and wailing internally, Lu Wei anxiously thought of a solution. If she was already like this with Chen Yushu asleep, what would happen when he woke up?
Thinking this, she quietly got up and tiptoed toward the bathroom, planning to wash her face with cold water.
As she passed by Chen Yushu’s bed, she unconsciously held her breath, moving as lightly as possible in an awkward posture, like a thief sneaking into a house.
Just then, the person on the bed let out a muffled groan.
Instantly, Lu Wei froze, one foot suspended mid-air. After a long moment, when Chen Yushu showed no further movement, she slowly continued forward.
Finally making it into the bathroom, Lu Wei closed the door and went to the sink. Unavoidably, she caught sight of her face, red as a monkey’s bottom, and couldn’t help but click her tongue in annoyance. She hurriedly scooped up a handful of cold water and buried her face in it.
After a while, the heat on her face finally subsided. She opened the door, peeked outside, and seeing that Chen Yushu was still sound asleep, quickly returned to her original spot.
After mentally preparing herself for a while, Lu Wei sharpened her pencil again and focused on drawing.
Once finished, she removed the drawing paper and finally returned to her normal self. However, Chen Yushu was still asleep, showing no signs of waking.
Bored from sitting idly, Lu Wei twirled her pencil, placed another sheet of paper on the easel, and began sketching casually.
As the outline took shape, she was slightly startled. Glancing at the figure lying on the bed, her pencil paused on the paper for a second. Then, unable to resist, she continued and quickly completed the sketch.
She leaned back, made a few adjustments, and then took out her phone to snap a picture of the drawing.
As the sun gradually set, a chill set in. Lu Wei stood up, intending to go inside to grab a jacket.
Just as she reached the edge of the bed, Chen Yushu suddenly woke up. She stretched lazily, yawning, and asked in a hoarse voice, “What time is it?”
“It’s almost 4:30,” Lu Wei replied. At the sudden sight of Chen Yushu, she still felt a bit flustered. Using the excuse of checking the time, she quickly lowered her head.
“How did I sleep for so long?” Chen Yushu pulled the blanket over herself, rolled over in bed, and mumbled.
Lu Wei glanced up and couldn’t help thinking, So cute.
“Are you done with your drawing?” Chen Yushu sat up and asked, then shrank back under the covers from the cold. “Where are my clothes?”
Lu Wei froze for a second. “They’re probably in the bathroom. I’ll get them for you.”
“Wait, why do you look like that?” Chen Yushu called out to stop her.
Lu Wei’s heart tightened. She touched her face defensively and feigned calmness. “What? I’m fine.”
Chen Yushu found her behavior increasingly odd and guessed, “Did the drawing not go well?”
“Not at all,” Lu Wei sighed in relief. “I finished it a while ago. Just lie down, I’ll go get your clothes.”
By the time Lu Wei came out with the clothes, she saw Chen Yushu wearing her jacket, stretching in front of the balcony. “Let me see your drawing.”
Lu Wei was about to respond when she suddenly remembered the sketch she had just drawn hadn’t been put away. She hurriedly called out, “Wait!” and rushed over in a few large strides, blocking the easel.
Chen Yushu was startled by her defensive posture and asked after a moment’s pause, “What’s wrong?”
“Um, well.” Lu Wei pressed her back tightly against the painting, her mind racing. In her extreme nervousness, she broke out in a cold sweat. “It’s… it’s not finished yet.”
“Huh? Didn’t you just say it was done?”
“Haha, did I?” Lu Wei laughed awkwardly. Under Chen Yushu’s suspicious gaze, she grew even more flustered and quickly added, “Well, it is finished. This… this one is a failed attempt, so don’t look at it.”
Just then, Chen Yushu caught sight of the painting on the table. She turned sideways and leaned in closer. “Hmm, it’s actually quite nice.”
“Just average,” Lu Wei replied with a forced laugh, silently praying that Chen Yushu would finish looking and leave soon.
“What have you been up to?” Chen Yushu lifted her head and noticed Lu Wei still holding her earlier stance. She couldn’t help but scrutinize her more carefully. “Why do you look so guilty?”
Is it that obvious? Lu Wei’s eyes widened slightly, and she held her breath, denying it outright. “No, I don’t.”
Chen Yushu frowned, took a step forward, and tilted her head. “Did you do something bad behind my back?”
Lu Wei’s breath hitched. She struggled to maintain her composure while secretly tearing the edge of the painting. If Chen Yushu forced the issue, she would.
Chen Yushu rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Look at you, acting like a thief with a guilty conscience. Who knows what you’re hiding that’s so shameful?” With that, she turned and walked further inside.
Seeing this, Lu Wei suddenly relaxed, clutching her chest as she let out a long, relieved sigh.
Once Chen Yushu entered the bathroom, Lu Wei hurriedly tore off the painting, folded it, and stuffed it into her pocket, patting it a few times for good measure. Only then did she finally feel at ease.
“Are we heading back to school later?” Chen Yushu asked as she emerged from the bathroom after changing, tossing her jacket to Lu Wei.
Lu Wei replied, “No, we’ve already paid. Let’s just sleep here.”
Chen Yushu hummed in agreement and walked over to sit on the sofa next to Lu Wei. “Where should we eat?”
“Anywhere is fine,” Lu Wei said, glancing at her out of the corner of her eye. “How about ordering takeout?”
“Sure.” Chen Yushu took out her phone, resting her hand on her thigh. Her long hair slipped over her shoulder, brushing back and forth against the back of Lu Wei’s hand.
Lu Wei lowered her head, watching the strands of hair sway, and unconsciously tightened her grip on the fabric of her pants.
Just then, a hand reached over. Chen Yushu handed her the phone and said, “I’ve picked my order. Take a look and see what you want.”
Lu Wei lifted her eyelids, straightened up, and leaned back, creating some distance. “I’ll have the same as you.”
Chen Yushu, focused on her phone, didn’t notice her unease. “Alright. If I’d known we weren’t going out, I wouldn’t have bothered changing.”
“You can change again before bed,” Lu Wei said, then paused. Wait, was Chen Yushu planning to sleep here tonight?
She couldn’t help but glance back at the only bed in the room.
Could this really work? Lu Wei gritted her teeth inwardly. Things were different now, what was this even supposed to mean?
Half an hour later, the takeout arrived. After finishing their meal, the two curled up on the sofa, each absorbed in their phones.
Lu Wei stared at her screen, restless and unsure what to do. She kept switching between apps, occasionally looking up to steal a glance at Chen Yushu.
Sensing the increasingly frequent stares, Chen Yushu finished sending a message and finally looked up. The next second, Lu Wei was caught red-handed.
Chen Yushu: “Do you have anything you want to say?”
“Nope.” Lu Wei shook her head vigorously. “Not at all.”
“You seem a bit off today,” Chen Yushu remarked, puzzled.
Lu Wei’s breath hitched, and she froze for a moment before replying woodenly, “Do I? How so?”
Chen Yushu couldn’t quite put her finger on it and didn’t press further.
The air grew quiet again. Lu Wei didn’t dare sneak another glance and instead lowered her head, absentmindedly scrolling through short videos without actually watching any.
Just then, a provocative title caught her eye “Find Out in 30 Seconds: Do You Have the Potential to Be Gay?”
In the past, she would have swiped past it without a second thought, but at that moment, Lu Wei stared at the title for a long while before, as if possessed, she tapped on it.
The next second, a clear voice played through the speaker:
“A 30-second test to see if you have sapphic potential taken by two million people.”
