How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 49.2
Lu Wei opened and enlarged the photos, immediately noticing two corners of clothing in the background the other person was probably Jiang Yuran. A faint pang of jealousy tugged at her heart.
Whatever, they’re just friends. There’s no need to feel this way.
As the thought crossed her mind, Lu Wei paused, suddenly realizing something was off. Why was she thinking like this? After all, she and Chen Yushu. were also just friends.
She had no idea what Wang Zhizhi said, but it made the entire auditorium burst into laughter. Lu Wei lifted her eyelids, glanced at the stage, and curled her lips in boredom.
The lecture lasted nearly two hours. As soon as it ended, a few students from the front row hesitantly approached the stage with art collections in hand, asking Wang Zhizhi for autographs.
Wang Zhizhi smiled, took the pen, and signed swiftly. “There you go.”
Seeing this, other students swarmed forward as well.
“Ahhh, I want one too!” Annan gazed despairingly at the long queue, then turned to Lu Wei, his hope rekindled. “Please, be a dear.”
“Hand it over.” Lu Wei sighed softly; she was used to this sort of thing.
“And me, me too!” Song Xin quickly pulled a stack of picture books from her bag and handed them to Lu Wei. “I owe you big time. When you get back, I’ll treat you to a feast.”
Lu Wei took them, furrowing her brow as she counted. “Why did you bring so many?”
Song Xin replied, “You don’t get it these are my childhood. When I heard my goddess was coming, I specially asked my mom to.”
Just then, a few people standing off to the side in front of them hesitated, glancing at the picture books in Lu Wei’s hands. Noticing this, Lu Wei asked directly, “Do you all want Wang Zhizhi’s signature too?”
“Really?” one of them exclaimed joyfully. “Could you help us.”
Lu Wei nodded, placing the picture books on the table and gesturing for them to add theirs. Before long, the books had piled up into a small mountain.
Any more and she wouldn’t be able to carry them all. Reluctantly, Lu Wei had to turn down two guys who were holding nearly ten books each.
The two boys’ expressions immediately soured. They exchanged a look and tried to plead their case, but Lu Wei remained firm. Seeing this, they clicked their tongues in displeasure and couldn’t help muttering as they walked away:
“What’s the big deal?”
“Forget it. Who cares if her mom is Wang Zhizhi? Even if she hits rock bottom someday, she can always sell her mom’s signatures.”
“You’re so harsh. She’d never sink that low, but us.”
Their voices were just loud enough for Lu Wei to hear. Though she knew they were just venting, the words still stung.
“What are you talking about? Idiots!”
“Did you eat crap today? Your mouths are so foul! Morons!”
Song Xin and Annan cursed in unison and were about to charge forward.
“It’s fine.” Lu Wei stopped them. “Don’t bother with them.”
“Huh? But they.” Annan looked at Lu Wei, puzzled. “You can just let that slide? That’s not like you.”
Lu Wei expressionlessly straightened the pile of picture books on the table and said calmly, “They’re not from our department. They probably just wanted the signatures to sell online.”
“Tch, so they’re just sore losers throwing a fit.”
“Jealous fools, ignore them.”
Lu Wei hummed in agreement.
About twenty minutes later, the hall had mostly cleared out. Wang Zhizhi finished signing and waved her over. “Why did you end up all the way back there? Do you really not want to see your mom that much?”
“Who told you to be so popular? I couldn’t get through.” Lu Wei shook her head with an exaggerated sigh and walked over, carrying the stack of picture books. “Here, there’s still more.”
“We’ll talk about that later. Let’s go eat first.” Wang Zhizhi took half the books. “By the way, where’s Xiao Shu? Why isn’t she with you?”
Hearing this, Lu Wei’s already low spirits sank even further. Her face stiffened as she replied, “She went to a club activity with her roommate.”
“Hahaha, that’s just how college is. You can’t stick together every moment like you used to.”
“Nonsense. If you hadn’t come to give this lecture and forced us to attend, I’d be with Chen Yushu right now.” Lu Wei retorted immediately.
“Oh, so you’re blaming your mom now?” Wang Zhizhi teased. “How are things between you and Xiao Shu these days, anyway?”
Lu Wei’s keen ears caught the word “chu” and automatically associated it with dating. Her face warmed. “What kind of question is that? It’s the same as before, of course.”
“Hahaha, Weiwei, I’m just asking. Why are you so flustered?” Wang Zhizhi raised an eyebrow, her eyes full of teasing.
Lu Wei shot her a displeased look. “Who’s flustered? Your question was just weird.”
Wang Zhizhi: “Was it? How so?”
Lu Wei pouted, feeling inexplicably guilty. Then, she unconsciously recalled the question Wang Zhizhi had asked that night.
Are you sure Xiaoshu is just your friend?
Unlike her previous confusion, this time she suddenly sensed another meaning, as if the outermost layer of fog had cleared, leaving only a faint, elusive wisp of smoke before her.
But what did Wang Zhizhi mean by asking that? Could it be that she…
Impossible! Lu Wei clenched her palm, hastily denying the thought. She hadn’t even realized it herself, how could Wang Zhizhi possibly know? Besides, she wasn’t even sure if her feelings for Chen Yushu were of that kind!
Wang Zhizhi watched Lu Wei’s ever-changing expressions with amusement and deliberately asked, “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Huh?” Lu Wei swallowed nervously, unable to hide her panic. After a pause, she slowly changed the subject, “Let me see where Chen Yushu is.”
With that, she quickly took out her phone and lowered her head to message Chen Yushu. Feeling Wang Zhizhi’s gaze on her, she inexplicably felt as if she’d been stripped bare.
Could Wang Zhizhi have actually noticed something? There’s nothing even started yet, what nonsense is she talking about? The more Lu Wei thought about it, the more annoyed she became. Wang Zhizhi was an adult, why was she so nosy?
Just then, she heard Wang Zhizhi call out, “Xiaoshu, we’re over here.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu hurried over, carrying a bag of fresh fruit. Her smooth long hair cascaded down her back, and with Jiang Yuran’s encouragement, she had applied light makeup that softened her features, making her appear much gentler.
Lu Wei looked up, her gaze instantly captivated. However, the moment Chen Yushu glanced over, her eyes immediately wavered. She thought she was hiding it well, but her heart began to pound fiercely, betraying her pretense.
“Auntie, have you been waiting long?” Chen Yushu asked, slightly out of breath, handing her the fruit. “Picking these took a bit of time.”
“We just got here too,” Wang Zhizhi replied, taking the bag and smiling as she ruffled Chen Yushu’s hair. “Xiaoshu is getting more and more beautiful. With a little makeup, I almost didn’t recognize you.”
Listening to their conversation, Lu Wei stole a glance at Chen Yushu like the proverbial ostrich hiding its head in the sand wanting to look but not daring to.
What’s wrong with her? Chen Yushu naturally noticed Lu Wei’s odd behavior and couldn’t help studying her with confusion.
Lu Wei quickly lowered her head, fiddling with her phone, pretending to be busy but not knowing what she was busy with.
Strange, has she gone mute? Chen Yushu grew even more puzzled as she watched her, suddenly feeling that this scene was just like when they were kids Lu Wei appearing aloof and introverted but actually being quite annoying.
“Weiwei, why are you hiding behind your mom? What, don’t you recognize Xiaoshu anymore?”
“What are you talking about?” Lu Wei lifted her head, forcing herself to appear calm as she looked at Chen Yushu. “You two have been talking the whole time, when did I have a chance to say anything?”
“Alright, let’s not stand here anymore. Let’s find a place to eat.” Wang Zhizhi took a step back and pulled Lu Wei next to Chen Yushu. “You two lead the way, I’ll follow.”
A faint scent of perfume drifted into Lu Wei’s nostrils. She sniffed subtly, confirming it was coming from Chen Yushu.
She hadn’t smelled this before, where did Chen Yushu get perfume? Lu Wei tilted her head curiously and noticed Chen Yushu had curled her eyelashes, long and lifted, with blush swept across her cheeks that complemented her peachy-orange lipstick.
It didn’t seem like Chen Yushu’s handiwork it was easy to guess who had done it. Curling lashes, applying lipstick, how close must they have been!
Lu Wei pouted, her heart feeling as if it were crawling with countless ants, extremely uncomfortable.
Forget it, forget it. It’s just friends helping each other with makeup. Lu Wei furrowed her brows, let out a sigh, and comforted herself.
The next second, she couldn’t help but think, Wait, why did Chen Yushu dress up like this? To hang out with Jiang Yuran?
Wow! When she goes out with me, she just throws on anything and goes bare-faced, but when she goes out with someone else, What exactly is it about me that’s worse than that person?
For a moment, Lu Wei was so angry her head hurt, and she shot Chen Yushu a resentful, bitter glare.
Wait! There’s another possibility maybe Chen Yushu dressed up carefully because she was going to see Wang Zhizhi?
Thinking this, Lu Wei couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile. Yeah, that’s more likely. Yes, that must be it.
It seems Chen Yushu still cares about her a lot!
“What are you doing? Sighing one moment, muttering the next.” Chen Yushu had been watching her little movements out of the corner of her eye and couldn’t take it anymore. “Say something.”
Lu Wei leaned closer and tugged carefully at Chen Yushu’s sleeve. “My mom’s behind us, don’t be so harsh with me.”
“Oh, so what?”
“Wang Zhizhi will laugh at me,” Lu Wei grumbled quietly. “She’s so mean.”
Chen Yushu suppressed a laugh and leaned in to whisper, “What did she do?”
“She…” Lu Wei thought back to Wang Zhizhi’s teasing earlier and suddenly realized how intimate their current posture was. She couldn’t help but glance back, only to see Wang Zhizhi smiling unabashedly, her expression subtle.
Lu Wei stiffly forced a smile, quickly turned back, grabbed Chen Yushu’s hand, and quickened her pace.
“Hahaha, you’ve really grown up, haven’t you?” Wang Zhizhi shook her head with a laugh and slowly followed.
Chen Yushu asked, “What did your mom say?”
“Don’t mind her, she’s just like that sometimes,” Lu Wei mumbled vaguely, inwardly groaning. Chen Yushu alone was already hard enough to handle, and now with Wang Zhizhi here too, Lu Wei felt like crying. She was certain this meal was going to be unbearable.
They soon arrived at the restaurant and took their seats, with Wang Zhizhi in the middle and the two of them on either side.
Before the meal started, the three chatted casually in a relaxed atmosphere, and Lu Wei gradually found herself talking more.
When the dishes were served, Wang Zhizhi tasted each one with great appetite. “Nothing beats restaurants outside the school they’ve got flavor!”
“Then eat more,” Lu Wei said, hoping she’d eat more and talk less.
However, the next moment, she heard Wang Zhizhi ask casually, “By the way, now that you’ve been in school for a while, have you met anyone you like?””
Hearing this, the two of them simultaneously looked up and met each other’s eyes.
