How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 49.1
Lu Wei widened her eyes in disbelief, how could this be?
The shock and doubt in her heart, mingled with the irregular rhythm of her heartbeat, pulled at her from two opposing directions.
Lu Wei withdrew her hand, slowly turned her back to Chen Yushu, and lay down. She pulled the blanket up to her armpits, but the incessant buzzing in her ears couldn’t drown out the loud, unrelenting thumping of her heart.
She, liked Chen Yushu?
That short sentence broke into fragments in her mind. When her thoughts brushed against the word “liked,” it felt as if she had been burned or shocked once was enough; she didn’t dare touch it again.
Just posing the question to herself made Lu Wei afraid to revisit the thought, as if she had stepped into a dangerous forbidden zone, even if only half a step.
After the initial shock faded, an increasingly intense curiosity and desire to explore took its place.
Lu Wei couldn’t understand it. How could decades of friendship with Chen Yushu change overnight?
Impossible! Absolutely impossible!
How could she like ? The very thought was absurd. There must be some mistake!
They had already promised to be best friends for life!
So how could she possibly like Chen Yushu? Never mind that they were friends just the fact that she was her niece should have been enough to prevent any such feelings!
If she were going to like her, she would have done so long ago!
Yes! As if she had found a convincing reason, Lu Wei’s panic eased considerably. She nodded firmly in agreement, convinced: It must be this way!
Just then, the person sharing her pillow suddenly turned over, rubbing her face against the skin at the nape of Lu Wei’s neck like a cat, sending tingles through her.
Wait, wait, wait! Something seemed off here!
Lu Wei swallowed, not daring to move a muscle. Only when the person behind her stopped did she realize she had forgotten to breathe.
This was very wrong! But Lu Wei didn’t dare dwell on it, telling herself, In a few days, it’ll pass.
The next day.
Lu Wei was awakened by the sunlight streaming through the window. Having stayed up late into the night, she was so tired she didn’t even open her eyes, simply turned over, and fell back asleep in an instant.
“Still not awake? The sun’s already shining on your backside,” Chen Yushu muttered by the bedside, hands on her hips, watching her for a moment before closing the curtains.
Lu Wei slept until noon before sluggishly waking up. She sat up groggily and instinctively glanced beside her, only to find Chen Yushu gone and the room empty.
Frowning slightly, she got out of bed and searched around, finally spotting Chen Yushu on the balcony.
“Awake?” Chen Yushu was sitting in a chair, a book in her hands. She glanced back at the sound of the door opening.
Lu Wei walked over, still drowsy, and rubbed her eyes.
“Didn’t you go to bed pretty early last night?” Chen Yushu asked, puzzled. “Why are you still so tired?”
At this, Lu Wei froze. Memories of the previous night flooded back, and she suddenly felt awkward. After a moment’s thought, she mumbled vaguely, “I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Sleeping more than a pig,” Chen Yushu shook her head and looked away.
A small round wooden table stood between them. Lu Wei sat down and secretly glanced at Chen Yushu out of the corner of her eye. Just then, a blue butterfly suddenly fluttered into her line of sight.
Stunned for a second, Lu Wei abruptly stood up, pointing at the table. “H-how did this get here?”
Chen Yushu lifted her eyelids and looked at her. “I’d like to know that too.”
Lu Wei suddenly fell silent. Had she fallen asleep holding the butterfly hairpin last night? Could it have been picked up by Chen Yushu?
Damn it!
Chen Yushu took in her expression, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Explain. What’s going on?”
“Uh.” Lu Wei forced a laugh and mumbled vaguely, “Well it’s like this and then like that and that’s how it ended up.”
“Hmph.” Chen Yushu returned a fake smile and couldn’t resist rolling her eyes at her.
Feeling guilty, Lu Wei licked her lips and chuckled, “Well, you think it’s pretty too, don’t you?”
Chen Yushu gritted her teeth, snapped her book shut, and made a move as if to hit Lu Wei on the head with it.
“Ah! Domestic violence!” Lu Wei immediately covered her ears and yelled.
Seeing this, Chen Yushu couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Are you an idiot? You cover your ears instead of your head.”
“What do you know? It’s a strategy,” Lu Wei said, opening one eye. “Go ahead and hit me if you want. You’ll feel sorry for me afterward and won’t dare do anything to me again.”
“Feel sorry for you? Like hell I will!” Chen Yushu flicked her forehead. “Two hundred ninety-nine! What were you thinking? Are you crazy?”
“Alright, alright,” Lu Wei hissed in pain. “I was wrong.”
“Wrong, but you’d do it again, right?”
“Hehe.” Lu Wei flashed an innocent, harmless smile, hoping to soften Chen Yushu.
Chen Yushu couldn’t help but call her an idiot again. “If I hadn’t found it, how long were you planning to hide it?”
Lu Wei’s heart skipped a beat, afraid her little secret might be exposed. She quickly brushed it off with a laugh. “No personal attacks! Anyway, when the time comes, I’ll give it to you.”
“I don’t want it,” Chen Yushu snorted. “Give it to someone who cares, you spendthrift.”
“You don’t want it? Then I guess I’ll just throw it away.” Lu Wei picked up the hairpin, sighed with a hint of regret, and pretended to toss it out the window.
Chen Yushu sat calmly in her spot, completely unmoved.
“You… how can you be like this?” Lu Wei felt awkward and at a loss. “Don’t you feel any pity for it?”
Chen Yushu gave her a knowing look and sighed helplessly. “Fine, give it to me.”
Feeling she’d salvaged a bit of her pride, Lu Wei curved her lips into a smile and handed her the hairpin.
Chen Yushu didn’t take it. Instead, she tilted her head toward Lu Wei. “You put it on for me.”
“Ah?” Lu Wei’s heart tightened, suddenly feeling flustered. She fumbled with the butterfly hairpin for a while before clumsily clipping it in place, holding her breath the entire time. As soon as she finished, she stepped back, avoiding eye contact. “Done.”
Chen Yushu thanked her, stood up, and went into her room to examine herself closely in the mirror.
Lu Wei slowly followed, standing outside the mirror’s reflection, stealing glances at Chen Yushu like a thief. When she saw that Chen Yushu hadn’t noticed, her gaze grew bolder.
Just then, her phone rang it was Wang Zhizhi calling.
Startled, Lu Wei quickly moved out of Chen Yushu’s line of sight and answered the call.
“What did your mom say?” Chen Yushu asked after Lu Wei hung up.
Lu Wei pressed her lips together. “She said she’s giving a lecture at our school in a few days.”
Chen Yushu looked surprised. “So that’s why your mom came to Yuncheng? That’s perfect you two can meet up.”
“Yeah.” Lu Wei nodded thoughtfully.
On Wednesday afternoon, there were no classes university-wide, and many events were scheduled during that time.
Lu Wei had originally planned to attend a club activity with Chen Yushu, but the college suddenly issued a notice requiring the entire department to gather in the auditorium for a lecture. The speaker was none other than Wang Zhizhi.
Arriving right on time, Lu Wei found that all the front-row seats were already taken, and many unfamiliar faces students from other departments had also shown up. Puzzled, she took a seat in the back row and muttered to herself, “Is it really necessary to be this enthusiastic?”
Song Xin, sitting beside her, couldn’t help but interject, “Duh! Have you even seen who it is? Oh, I almost forgot she’s your mom.”
Their conversation caught the attention of the people in front. A girl turned around curiously, glanced at Lu Wei, and whispered to the girl next to her, “Wang Zhizhi is Lu Wei’s mom?”
“Are you living under a rock? How do you not know that?”
“Wait, seriously? Oh my god, I’m so jealous! With a mom like that, she could probably go to any school she wants.”
“Ugh, exactly. Some people are just born lucky they’re basically born in Rome.”
“Being in a family like that, it feels like she doesn’t have to worry about anything. Not like me I’m already stressing about finding a job in the future.”
The two continued whispering, but their conversation was still audible.
“I’m so jealous too!” An Nan gazed at Lu Wei with starry eyes. “Can I borrow your mom for a few days?”
“Hahaha, count me in! Weiwei, would you mind having another sister?” Song Xin affectionately linked arms with Lu Wei.
Lu Wei didn’t respond, forcing out a faint laugh as she subtly pulled her hand away.
Just then, a round of enthusiastic applause erupted in the auditorium.
The three looked up and saw Wang Zhizhi, dressed in a linen maxi dress, gracefully step onto the stage elegant and poised.
“Ahhh! I’m seeing her in person!”
“Lu Wei, your mom is so beautiful! And she looks so young and classy!”
While the two beside her were thrilled, Lu Wei found the noise overwhelming. She glanced briefly at the stage from afar before lowering her head again.
At that moment, she felt several pairs of eyes turning toward her. Her expression shifted slightly, and she frowned, burying her head even deeper. She pulled out her phone to text Chen Yushu, asking what she was up to.
However, after waiting for a while, Chen Yushu still hadn’t replied. Staring at her phone screen, Lu Wei scrolled up and down aimlessly.
Wang Zhizhi’s voice echoed throughout the auditorium, and discussions about her kept popping up around Lu Wei. Feeling increasingly irritated, she took out her earphones, put them on, turned the volume to the maximum, and played a random song.
Just then, Chen Yushu replied, saying she was at the Wine Club’s tasting event. She also sent two photos from the scene.
