How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 26.2
Chen Yushu leaned over and took a sip, catching the damp, fragrant scent of someone fresh out of the shower. Only then did she notice that Lu Wei was wearing pajamas, her hair still wet and draped behind her. “Did you just take a shower?”
“Yeah, just finished showering.” Lu Wei’s voice was slightly hoarse. “So you came at the perfect time. If you’d been any earlier, I’d have had to open the door for you stark naked.”
“Always talking nonsense.”
“Well, I couldn’t just leave you locked outside, could I?” Lu Wei spoke with a tone of righteous indignation, then added, “Let me feed Bread first. Go wait on the bed I’ll be right there.”
Though the words weren’t wrong, Chen Yushu felt there was something odd about how they sounded.
Compared to her childhood, Lu Wei’s room was much tidier and cleaner now, but the doodles on the wall hadn’t been erased they were deliberately preserved as traces of memory.
After squatting by the wall for a while, Chen Yushu leaned back on the bed.
In the quiet space, the gloom in her heart slowly resurfaced, making her feel stifled and uneasy.
“I’ll set up a game, and we can play in a bit,” Lu Wei said as she walked in, sitting directly at the foot of the bed and fiddling with the game console.
Chen Yushu hummed in response and closed her eyes to rest.
After a rustling sound, Lu Wei’s voice came again, “Did your mom scold you again?”
Chen Yushu opened her eyes in surprise, pausing for a moment before asking, “How did you know?”
“Isn’t it always like this? Whenever something’s wrong, you come running to me.”
“Really?” Chen Yushu asked hesitantly, “Is it that obvious?”
“Mhm.” Lu Wei set down the game console, suddenly stood up, and walked over to Chen Yushu. “Come on, let me comfort you.”
Chen Yushu was puzzled and mumbled, “What are you doing?”
Just then, Lu Wei leaned in close, suddenly bending down and wrapping her arms around Chen Yushu in a tight embrace.
Caught off guard, Chen Yushu instinctively tried to pull away, but in the next moment, Lu Wei pressed her head into her chest.
The fragrance enveloped her, instantly flooding her senses. Chen Yushu couldn’t help but take a deep breath, and her restless emotions gradually began to settle.
Suddenly, she felt Lu Wei gently stroking her head, offering soothing, tender pats one after another.
A growing lump formed in her throat, and Chen Yushu’s eyes uncontrollably welled up with tears. She bit her lip, struggling to hold back the overwhelming surge of sorrow and grievance.
“There, there, hurry and forget all those words!”
“They’re just bullying our Shushu because she’s too well-behaved. If it were Sinan-jie, would they dare act so boldly? Not that I’m saying anything bad about your mom, but sometimes she really.”
Chen Yushu could no longer hold back. She wrapped her arms around Lu Wei in return, clutching the fabric of her clothes tightly, as if trying to merge completely into her embrace as if by doing so, she could hide forever in this tranquility.
In that very moment, she was gently enveloped in Lu Wei’s arms.
A drop of water from Lu Wei’s hair fell onto the back of Chen Yushu’s hand, and in return, tears fell onto Lu Wei’s chest.
The fabric over Lu Wei’s chest quickly grew damp. With one arm wrapped around Chen Yushu’s shoulder and the other gently patting her back, Lu Wei murmured, “Look how upset our child is. Don’t be sad, Shushu. If she doesn’t cherish you, I will.”
The tears she had tried to hold back burst forth once more. It was such a trivial matter, something she could usually let fade with time, and she didn’t know why she felt so heartbroken at that moment.
After what felt like a long time, Chen Yushu’s sobs gradually subsided, as if all her energy had been drained. She leaned limply against Lu Wei’s chest, listening to the steady rhythm of her heartbeat, and unconsciously closed her eyes, her heart filled with a serene softness.
Suddenly, something brushed against her face. Chen Yushu opened her eyes to see Lu Wei leaning down, gently wiping the tears from her cheeks.
Their gazes collided, an unintentional intrusion that stirred waves in their pupils. Lu Wei’s eyes were so bright they seemed capable of illuminating every subtle, sensitive thought in Chen Yushu’s mind. To hide this, Chen Yushu could only quickly lower her eyelids, not daring even to maintain physical closeness for fear of betraying the frantic beating of her heart at that moment.
“I’ll do it myself.” Chen Yushu snatched the tissue, her body stiffening slightly as she retreated under the covers, lowering her head to wipe away her tears.
“Feeling shy?” Lu Wei sat down, leaning in close as she gently brushed Chen Yushu’s hair aside with her fingertips. “Haven’t you cried in front of me plenty of times before?”
Chen Yushu’s eyes darted around, unable to find an escape, and she blurted out in a fluster, “None of your business!”
“So embarrassed, huh?” Lu Wei chuckled, bracing her hands on the bed before suddenly saying, “I don’t want to meddle either, but you always cry in a way that makes my heart ache.”
Thump!
Like a small stone dropped into the center of a lake, ripples spread silently, leaving an indelible mark.
Lu Wei was always like this bringing everything gently into her life, then brushing it off and walking away, yet leaving behind something unforgettable.
Just like now.
After speaking, Lu Wei left, her voice carrying from outside the door, “Raise a dog for a lifetime, use it for a moment. Bread, come out and go comfort your mom.”
Soon, both the human and the dog entered the bedroom one after the other. Bread trotted to the bedside, tongue lolling, and fixed his big eyes on Chen Yushu.
“Bread, come here, up.” Chen Yushu patted the edge of the bed. Bread’s short little legs gave a hop, landing steadily beside her. Chen Yushu immediately leaned over, nuzzling his furry head. “Bread is so good! What a sweet dog, how can you be this adorable?”
Lu Wei climbed onto the bed, stretching her foot toward Bread’s mouth to tease him while remarking with a hint of jealousy, “Sigh, if I’d known you wanted him, I wouldn’t have come. Would’ve saved my pajamas from getting wet.”
Chen Yushu couldn’t help glancing at her, the lingering palpitations in her chest not yet fully subsided. She quickly averted her eyes and swatted Lu Wei’s leg. “Get your stinky foot away.”
“What’s stinky about it? Bread, come sniff and tell her if it’s stinky or not.”
“You’re so annoying.” Chen Yushu pushed her away, unable to bear it any longer, and hugged Bread’s head again, nuzzling him. “Good dog, sweet dog.”
Lu Wei paid no mind. “This silly dog even eats poop, what right does he have to complain about my feet?”
“What did you say?” Chen Yushu’s eyes widened in shock. She glanced at Lu Wei, then looked at Bread in disbelief, exclaiming, “Bread, is that true?”
“Why would I lie?” Lu Wei stretched her foot out again to tease the dog. “A while back, when my dad was walking him at night, he kept sniffing around in the grass. When we got closer, we realized.”
“Woof”
Lu Wei: “Oh, so now you’re embarrassed?”
“Woof woof”
Lu Wei: “Tsk tsk, Bread, after raising you for so long, I never knew you had this kind of habit. Really…”
“Woof woof woof”
“Hahahaha, alright, stop it. Let’s save Bread some face.” Chen Yushu laughed until she was breathless, clutching her stomach as she collapsed to one side.
Lu Wei caught her and pulled her into an embrace. Her gaze drifted downward, and she suddenly froze. From crying earlier, the tip of Chen Yushu’s nose and the area under her eyes were still flushed, her eyelashes dotted with glistening teardrops. Now, as she laughed, her brows, eyes, and lips relaxed into a gentle curve, like half a crimson plum blossom in the cold snow aloof and elegant, yet undeniably beautiful.
Lu Wei’s heart skipped a beat.
The next moment, Chen Yushu sat up and soothingly patted Bread’s head. “It’s okay, Bread. Mom doesn’t mind.”
Bread rested its head on the edge of the bed, rolled its eyes, and let out a soft whimper.
Lu Wei leaned over as well, reaching past Chen Yushu from behind to pet the dog. The posture was very much like hugging her from the back and in reality, it was exactly that.
Chen Yushu’s upper body stiffened instantly, and her movements while petting the dog became noticeably unnatural.
Fortunately, Lu Wei withdrew her hand after a moment. “Bread, go out and sleep. We don’t need you here.”
Bread whimpered twice, then trotted out with its short legs, wiggling its behind.
Only when the dog was completely out of sight did Chen Yushu reluctantly pull her gaze back, only to meet Lu Wei’s eyes head-on.
“Feeling better now?” Lu Wei asked.
Chen Yushu suppressed the smile that was about to spill from her eyes and gave a very soft “Mm.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei ruffled her hair and said, “Then play a game with me.”
Chen Yushu couldn’t help but pout. “So you just want me to play games with you?”
“Don’t say it like that. Whether we play games or not, I’d still have to cheer you up, wouldn’t I?” Lu Wei nudged closer, bumping Chen Yushu with her elbow. “Keep me company, please?”
Chen Yushu dodged, pulled back the covers, and slipped inside. “No, go play by yourself.”
“But I downloaded a two-player game.” Lu Wei hurriedly tried to pull the covers back, but Chen Yushu held on tightly. Left with no choice, she crawled under the covers too and started tickling Chen Yushu.
“Lu Wei! Stop it! Get away from me! Hahahahaha.”
The two of them wrestled on the bed until they ran out of energy, collapsing side by side, panting. Finally, Lu Wei compromised, “Let’s meet halfway you play a mobile game with me, okay?”
“Where’s your half?” Chen Yushu lazily stretched out a foot and nudged her butt. “It’s still just playing games.”
“Shushu, do we have to keep such close accounts between us?”
“You’re so annoying. Fine, what do you want to play?”
Lu Wei thought for a moment. “Let’s play Honor of Kings. I’ll invite a few friends. You play support and just stick with me.”
“Okay.”
Leaning against the headboard, sharing a thin blanket, they both opened their phones. Lu Wei logged into her account, but after a while, Chen Yushu still hadn’t joined. She leaned over to take a look. “Why aren’t you in yet?”
“My name is on the list of people who haven’t completed this week’s Youth League study.” Chen Yushu spoke with a resentful tone. “The Youth League committee is pushing me I have to catch up.”
“Hahaha, serves you right for not doing it on time.” Seeing the murderous look in Chen Yushu’s eyes, Lu Wei abruptly stopped laughing. “Give me your account. I’ll do it for you.”
On an iPhone, you could just drag the progress bar to complete the study.
