How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 25.3
Chen Yushu stiffened for a moment, then looked up and gave her a reassuring smile.
All the unspoken emotions passed between them, quietly dissolving a bit of the gloom in Chen Yushu’s heart.
She picked up the bouquet from the table, removed the wrapping paper, and placed the flowers in a pen holder.
Without all the decorations, they didn’t look like much. Chen Yushu snorted, thinking stubbornly, just like Lu Wei’s sweet talk flashy but shallow.
And “jealousy”! Can that word be thrown around so carelessly?
Remembering something, she picked up the small notebook on the table and swiftly wrote down the second word, her strokes sharp and forceful.
flippant. Superficial, lacking seriousness.
The next day, after washing up, Chen Yushu went downstairs to wait for Lu Wei so they could check out the clubs together.
Soon, Lu Wei came out, followed by two others who seemed to be talking about something. The three of them then walked toward Chen Yushu.
The moment she saw the trio, Chen Yushu’s expression instantly darkened, and anger flared up inside her.
Last night before bed, Lu Wei had messaged her, telling her not to bring anyone else just the two of them. But now, Lu Wei had brought two others along.
If that was the case, why even invite her?
Chen Yushu lowered her head, her chest heaving slightly, but she suppressed the urge to turn and leave, hoping they had just happened to run into each other.
Soon, the three of them approached her.
Chen Yushu looked up, trying to remain calm as she met their gaze. Lu Wei introduced her, “Chen Yushu, my best friend. These are my other two roommates, Song Xin and An Nan.”
“Hey, we’ve heard so much about you from Lu Wei. Finally meeting you really are a beauty.”
“Haha, that’s right. No wonder our Wei-jie can’t stop thinking about you.”
Lu Wei seemed a little embarrassed and lightly hit them. “Stop talking nonsense.”
Chen Yushu suppressed all her emotions and responded with a detached tone.
“There aren’t many people around now, let’s hurry,” Lu Wei said, reaching out to pull her along. Chen Yushu subtly avoided her touch and turned away first. “Let’s go.”
Lu Wei quickly caught up, and the two walked side by side, while the other two trailed slightly behind.
“What are they here for?” Chen Yushu couldn’t help but ask, still hoping they might just be heading the same way.
“Oh, they’re also here to check out the clubs.”
Her newly grown nails dug into her palm, the sharp pain easing some of the anger and hurt in her chest. She struggled to keep her expression neutral and replied with a faint “Mm.”
They soon reached Wutong Road. The Sunday morning crowd was much sparser than the day before, making the lively chatter of the three behind her all the more noticeable. It pressed against her ears, impossible to ignore. Her heart tightened as if gripped by something, making it hard to breathe freely.
“Classmate, would you like to learn more about the Go club?”
Someone handed her a flyer. Chen Yushu snapped out of her daze and forced a smile as she took it. “Thank you, but I don’t really know how to play.”
“No worries, there are plenty of beginners in the club. You can learn gradually.”
Just then, Lu Wei leaned in close from behind. “What’s this?”
Chen Yushu ignored her, pretending to read the flyer intently. Smiling at the person handing it out, she said, “Alright, I’ll think about it.” With that, she walked ahead.
“Could I have one too, please? Thanks.” Lu Wei quickly grabbed a flyer and caught up to Chen Yushu in a few strides. “Why are you walking so fast?”
Chen Yushu shot her a cool glance. “I want to check out more clubs.”
“Okay, I’ll go with you.” Lu Wei immediately linked arms with her, grinning.
“No need.” Chen Yushu took another flyer and lowered her head to read it. “Go keep your roommates company.”
Lu Wei leaned in closer to read along with her. “Why would I keep them company? I came out to hang out with you. Wait, are you interested in track and field?”
Only then did Chen Yushu notice the content of the flyer and felt a flicker of annoyance. “None of your business!”
“Why so fierce? I was just asking.”
Chen Yushu glared at her, the anger in her chest easing slightly.
Just then, Song Xin’s voice came from a club booth diagonally across. “Lu Wei, come check this out! It looks so fun!”
“Okay!” Lu Wei called back, pulling Chen Yushu along with her.
“Look at this, the ‘Flower Hand Shaking Club’ and this one.” Song Xin held a flyer in one hand, propped herself on Lu Wei’s shoulder with the other, laughing so hard she trembled. “What on earth is this? An ‘Anti-Cult Club’? Hahahaha.”
Seeing this, Chen Yushu quietly withdrew her hand. Just then, Lu Wei also let go, taking their flyers one by one to look at them. “Hahaha, this ‘Pig Farming Club’ is perfect for you!”
“Lu Wei, what do you mean by that?”
“Eat, sleep, sleep, eat isn’t that just Ow, let go of my ear! Alright, alright, my lady, I was wrong. You, this beautiful, generous, kind, and brave woman, please don’t hold it against me.”
Unnoticed, the crowd gradually grew thicker.
Chen Yushu stood rooted to the spot, catching glimpses of Lu Wei’s face through the gaps in the crowd as she joked around. The words that reached her ears seemed to have been specially processed, ringing out especially clear and loud.
“Damn you, Lu Wei!” Anger flared up in Chen Yushu’s chest, and she couldn’t help but curse under her breath. Without another glance, she turned and walked away.
“Alright, alright,” Lu Wei was still pleading. “You guys go check out other places. I need to find Chen Yushu… Hey, where is Chen Yushu?”
Lu Wei lost all interest in fooling around. Pushing through the crowd, she searched frantically, but Chen Yushu was nowhere to be seen nearby. Suddenly, an inexplicable panic gripped her heart.
Song Xin, about to tease her again, noticed her troubled expression and quickly sobered up. “Call her and ask.”
“Yeah,” Lu Wei replied flatly. The call went through, but no one answered, and her face darkened further.
Lu Wei was usually all smiles and laughter around them, so seeing her like this for the first time left both of them stunned.
An Nan quickly said, “It’s too noisy here; she might not have heard. Let’s help you look.”
“No need. You two go have fun. I’ll look for her myself.” Lu Wei bit her lip, trying to sound as calm as possible.
Song Xin wanted to say more, but An Nan pulled her away.
Chen Yushu stormed all the way back to the dorm, pushed the door open, plopped into a chair, and let out a heavy sigh, enveloped in a cloud of gloom.
This startled her roommate. Ye Chiwan cautiously asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Sorry, I got scared by a dog,” Chen Yushu said, slowing her tone. “Still recovering.”
Ye Chiwan: “Are you afraid of dogs?”
Chen Yushu hesitated, then nodded. “A little. Mostly, I just hate them.”
Dishonest people are dogs!
Her anger unabated, Chen Yushu pulled out a small notebook and pen, scribbling furiously across several pages.
Double standard. Hypocritical.
Aseptic. Cold, indifferent.
Deceitful. Dishonest, deceptive.
With a snap, she closed the notebook, shut her eyes, and slowly calmed her breathing. When she opened them again, she found Jiang Yuran had come to her side at some point.
“Did Lu Wei make you angry?” Jiang Yuran half-knelt, whispering.
Chen Yushu blinked, confirming she was right, then took a big gulp of water to suppress the fury in her heart before recounting what had just happened.
“Tch, she got what she wanted and doesn’t appreciate it! Women are never as reliable as sisters! Come on, I’ll go with you to check out the clubs. I heard there are plenty of interesting ones! We can’t waste this precious time over one woman!”
Chen Yushu pondered for a moment and found it reasonable. “But weren’t you planning to find Senior Jiang today?”
“Senior Jiang isn’t going anywhere, but right now, my bestie is more important!” Jiang Yuran straightened up, hands on her hips, radiating energy.
Chen Yushu still hesitated, so Jiang Yuran simply took matters into her own hands, half-dragging and half-pulling her out of the dorm room.
Just as the two left the dorm building and turned a corner, Lu Wei appeared at another intersection the very next second.
Panting heavily, Lu Wei climbed to the fourth floor and knocked on the door. Before she could catch her breath, she asked, “Is Chen Yushu in the dorm?”
Ye Chiwan replied, “She just left. Didn’t you run into her downstairs?”
Lu Wei shook her head in frustration. “Do you know where she went?”
“No idea,” Ye Chiwan thought for a moment. “She seemed to be with Jiangjiang, so they probably went to Wutong Road.”
“Okay, thanks.” Lu Wei closed the door and leaned against the wall, feeling drained. Only one thought crossed her mind: This is bad, Chen Yushu must be angry with me.
